#fandoms are like an ecosystem

This is not a complaint, just an observation and a bit of envy. I follow a lot of people who post about their fandoms with no reference whatsoever, no tagging, nothing. Just.. 'I can't believe Kris just did that to Lesa. If I were Nim I'd be pulling out my chaos cards and honking at them!'

Then they follow up a few minutes later with 'OMG Nim flushed their chaos cards down the toilet instead and now the bananas are loose!'

And it's so fascinating because I have literally no idea who or what they're talking about, but they're so enthusiastic about it that I love it. I wish I had something I was that into, as well as the confidence to just assume that others would know who I'm even talking about. I second guess everything I do. I want to be more free!

For all I know these posts are trolls and there is no actual fandom but I'm still here for the imagination and enthusiasm in that case.

thinking about it, I think a big part of fanonisation is the flattening of genre?

voltron was mecha show. did fanon include the big robot battles? fanon batman isnt solving mysteries or fighting criminals. nobody was taking on supervillains in 'avengers tower' fics.

sci-fi works lose their tech, supernatural works lost their monsters, mystery works lose their mysteries; all replaced by a more easily replicable and transferable set of tropes and plots that settle over the original tone, genre, characters, like a thick layer of landlord-white paint.

Treating the expectancy of a story in general (show/movie/novel) by what the fandom is:

You got like a few fics out there? bro you dying as soon as they finish it or you are a fandom of 5 people reading a book about the 1800s.

Fics and fanart? hm you have a life expectancy of any normal fandom, give it a few years and some might still remember you fondly, please carry that one fanartist who has the same artsyle as the show, they are carrying god knows how much of the content.

You had rewrites, fanarts, fics, popular merchandise, youve witstood quite the test of time! Good for you good for you, you wll be a core memory in a generation's life.
