Engineering updates
Noticed while skimming episodes the other day some changes in Main Engineering during the first couple of seasons that I hadn't noticed before (or just forgotten about).
Specifically, I'm going to focus on the back end of Engineering, where the Master Systems Display is located:
Tumblr media
Nice and busy
Now that area doesn't show up in Encounter at Farpoint, the couple of shots in engineering are centered around the warp core and the catwalk surrounding it (the open elevator connecting the two gets a lot of use in there).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hot elevator action!
The MSD appears in the next episode The Naked Now but it's all alone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nothing more than a repurposed wide corridor where we stuck a giant screen, and it's green (it will stay green for the first two seasons). There's also no isolinear stacks underneath the MSD, and the hallways panels are missing some LCARS. Oh and we don't have our pool table MSD table.
The next time we see engineering from this angle is The Last Outpost.
Tumblr media
A lot of progress for sure, but it's not right. The LCARS panels have been added to the bulkhead and the isolinear stacks are now underneath the display. The MSD Table, itself recycled from Star Trek 4, hasn't fully undergone the TNG conversion and looks out of place.
Here it is in The Voyage Home:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Lighting elements that are flush against the Display are the wrong shape, flanking it. for comparison:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now, a brief interlude to Where No One Has Gone Before:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They're GREEN. I had not...it had not clicked with me before (at least not consciously) that the lighting panels were green for the episode. I don't know if they were still tweaking the look or decided it should be green bc of Kosinski's so-called upgrades but in any case it's green and distracting now that I see it.
table's still wrong:
Tumblr media
I feel like they're going to show us some x-rays on here.
By the time we reach 11001001 the table looks right (hard to tell from this angle but looks like the entire surface is reflective now).
Tumblr media
the big lights are off, for some reason.
Another quick detour, this time to Home Soil, where the MSD also acts as a viewscreen:
Tumblr media
also when you put chairs there it really emphasizes how those controls look like navigation (you can control the ship from Engineering I guess you could set it up that way).
The rest of the season won't see any further changes. Season 2, starting with Where Silence Has Lease the lighting elements around the MSD will have been updated to the ones that will remain throughout the rest of the series
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The lighting might have changed between Where Silence Has Lease and Q-Who or just might be colour processing.
Finally, season 3 brings us the updated MSD with more detailed okudagrams on it
Tumblr media
There might be rubber duck in there.
It will remain mostly unchanged for the rest of the series, except at some point someone slapped a label on the bottom left.
Tumblr media
(this occured at some point between s3-4)
A final, minor, update was brought to the MSD where the label was removed and two lines were added to the pedestal for Star Trek: Generations.
Tumblr media
(similarly to how the runabouts had a bunch of random lines that looked like electrical tape to make the sets pop).

TNG Watchthrough: S1 E9 – Hide and Q
This one was fun. I didn't expect to see Q back so soon. I suppose they did leave it fairly open at the end of Farpoint with Q threatening to return, but i expected it to be a later seasons thing. Many more thoughts below the cut!
Having them run into Q's very distinctive force field before Q himself shows up is a nice touch.
Q in an Admiral uniform. It's funny because Q... kinda looks like a dork here. Like part of it is that the costume is maybe not great but i don't think i appreciated as a child the "just some guy" vibes that John De Lancie gives off. Yes he's dangerous and all powerful but there's an element of trying too hard that works well here against Picard's whole thing.
"Where are we?" You're on A Star Trek Planet™️!
I like the contrast of Will drinking the lemonade vs. Worf refusing. At first i was like "don't do it!" at Riker, but like, if Q wanted to kill you he wouldn't have to poison the lemonade. But I still like Worf pouring it out. I kinda wish they hadn't made it a Klingon Thing though. Like, just let Worf be petty on his own, it doesn't have to be a Cultural Difference.
"And where does she go?" "Into nothingness." This is sufficiently creepy, I wish they had done more with it. Might have been nice to have a moment where the planetside characters have to make a choice based on knowing that if they choose wrong they risk destroying Tasha.
" Damn it. I can't even make a log entry." Poor Picard! A fate worse than death!
Most of the TNG i saw when it aired is from later seasons, so as a result i don't have much of a preexisting connection with Tasha Yar. This is a nice scene with her and Picard, but like... I don't want to get attached.
"Shall we wager on that, Captain? Your starship command against?" "Against your keeping out of humanity's path for ever. Done?" This is so rash of Picard. Like, he doesn't even know what Riker's up against, Q controls time and space, and like, while he does have one data point from farpoint that Q will keep the bargain i personally would not be as confident that that's a given. But this is why we love Picard.
I enjoy the Shakespearean sparring.
Data as Q is very creepy. Neat to see how much they're doing with the makeup and contacts and whatever.
"You're beginning to sound like your Captain." "Now that's a compliment, Q." Aww.
“You have my word” Yessss. Love this. Love that he feels sufficiently bound by it to not save the girl. Good stuff.
"The Q has muddled your mind." I want to know to what extent this is literal. I was excited to get a Riker focused episode and then disappointed that Will just served as an object lesson rather than resisting Q himself through his own strength of character. I assume Picard just means here that access to the power is corrupting Will's perspective, but i'm going to headcannon that Q actually messed with his mind too, and that's why he kinda sucked here.
"Wesley I may know best of all. Our friendship, our long talks." You've been having long talks with Wesley? Huh. Better not catch you calling him "the boy" going forward.
That's not what adult Wil Wheaton looks like!
Love the look of fear Data has when Will offers to turn him human. It really drives home how creepy this whole thing is.
"You're as beautiful as I imagined, and more." Is this based on anything? Am i supposed to think Geordi and Tasha have a thing going on? I realize we're early in the season, but between this and the will and wesley's "long talks" i'm feeling a little jerked around by the show trying to lean on relationships that there's been no evidence of on screen.
"Make me the way I was. Please!" Oof. The pleading.
He made Worf a girlfriend. Who is this chick? Did she get teleported from somewhere or did he make her up out of whole cloth?
"I feel like such an idiot." "Quite right. So you should." Ouch.
"Perhaps someday we will discover that space and time are simpler than the human equation." Again, i wish we could have some more emotional character resolution at the end of the episode in place of Picard proclaiming the moral of the story. But that's just me being greedy, lots of good stuff in this one.

Stage 9
Original Release: 2018
Developer: Messy Desk
Publisher: Messy Desk
Platform: PC
Tumblr media
Stage 9 was a very ambitious fan project: recreate the Enterprise D in its entirety to explore at your own leisure. The project was shut down by CBS before it was completed, so we only have a selection of areas to explore – although most major areas are covered, including some never seen in the show.
As this is a very early build, the optimisation isn’t great, so it will be sluggish on decent PCs. As it’s just exploring, it’s not an issue. NPCs look a bit freaky, but you can turn them off.
The Enterprise D interiors have been recreated in astounding detail, areas we never got to see – such as the stairs to the Observation lounge – are now something we can look at and inspect. Some consoles also have functionality, you can take control of the ship, play with cargo bay tractor beams and open shuttlebay doors.
Tumblr media
Speaking of shuttlebays, the most impressive location in this is the Enterprise D’s main shuttlebay, which we never got to see in the show. It’s absolutely colossal, like a full size airport, and you can see why they never had the budget to create a set for it (and CGI was too early when the show was on the air). It really helps to sell the scale of the ship.
Another treat is the holodeck, which has more bridges to explore. There’s the bridge of the Enterprise form The Original Series along with different variants of the Enterprise D bridge from: the Encounter at Farpoint, Yesterday’s Enterprise, All Good Things and Generations, giving you a nice idea of how much they were changed for these episodes.
It is easy to get lost, though, and it seems obvious that a map would have been implemented later in development. You can find some neat extras such as a phaser range and a shuttle you can pilot.
It’s a massive shame that this project was shut down. The developers behind this were hired to make an interactive experience for The Orville where you get to explore the whole ship, and some of them are working on The Roddenberry Archive.

Motion Controller - PS VR Aim Controller
The PSVR Aim controller is an unusual looking controller. It was released for the first person shooter Farpoint. In Farpoint, you are stranded on an alien planet and you have to shoot the enemies to survive and try to get home. The PS VR Aim controller works really well with a first person shooter game as the controller functions like a gun. Using the controller would make the game a lot more immersive to play.

Really glad when the show gets even more self-aware. But also like. The first episode of GB IS amazing I think. I genuinely believe the Stamatis are so well-rounded immediately, you get the instant sense of who they are, so it gives you a great emotional starting point of where they'll GO.

The Next Generation. My favorite series. The truth is, it has a… not-so-great beginning. It took time for the actors and writers to find their footing. There aren’t a lot of stakes. But part of the appeal is how the show evolves and how you watch the camaraderie form among the crew. Yes, the actors seem like they barely know who they are at first. The characters are too isolated and barely interact. But then you watch them slowly settle into who they are, who they all really are. And they learn from each other. They sit, talk, grieve, drink, imagine, play poker. They become friends. They still try to figure things out, but they do it together. And it deepens into something… real and warm and lovely.

“Encounter at Farpoint.”
Isabelle
That’s the first episode. The pilot.
Charlotte
What’s it about?
[Pause.]
Isabelle
It’s about a man who tries to control this city. Except the city isn’t really his to control. The city is alive.
Charlotte
Huh.
Isabelle
Also, it’s about the history of humanity being put on trial.
Charlotte
Wow. Well. Thank you for these. I, uhh—

TNG: Encounter at Farpoint
Following Star Trek’s cancellation in 1969, fans demanded to be returned to their ship for nearly twenty years before The Next Generation hit the airwaves. With it, we got a new Enterprise, a new captain, and a whole new decade of fashion to space-ify.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard, in many ways the polar opposite of Kirk, shows off the uniform of a more civilized Starfleet: they’re stiffer and more tailored than their predecessors, neat and militaristic, with sharp lines and metallic accents. The first of which is, of course, the comm badge, now a functional (and highly futuristic) use of the Starfleet insignia. The other, metal pips at the collar to indicate rank.
Tumblr media
A 24th century captain: Distinguished. Educated. French.
The uniform’s pants are still black, which creates a nice slimming effect with the bottom of the shirt. As well, the pant legs are slit at the hem where they meet the boot, allowing a jauntier gait when crossing one’s luxury sized bridge.
Tumblr media
It’s strangely easy to imagine a musical number about to begin…
Hold on a minute, didn’t Command used to be gold?
Tumblr media
Pictured: The audience, demanding an explanation
Yes! But in the 24th century, we’ve moved beyond valuing material things like gold, so it has been demoted from Command to Operations. Or something. Anyway, captain red now. Not to worry – old school fans of the show are reassured that this is still the Star Trek they remember, and yes, we will still be sexualizing a selection of women serving on board the Enterprise-D.
Tumblr media
At least it’s not a skin-tight catsuit or anything.
I will say, though, I do like that Deanna gets to wear interesting (and definitely non-regulation) accessories with her uniforms, such as this headband of braided metallic fabric.
Tumblr media
It’s actually keeping the intrusive thoughts out.
Before the viewer has had time to digest the new uniforms and their lovely jewel tones, however, everyone’s favourite trickster god shows up to cause shenanigans in some serious medieval digs, complete with polished breastplate.
Tumblr media
Heed me, mortals, for I am shiny.
When that fails to impress the boy he’s flirting with, he tries a different tack, demonstrating his knowledge of Terran historical costuming.
Tumblr media
Hello, fellow humans. I, too, like to shoot gun and breathe poison.
But Starfleet captains are not so easy to provoke (anymore), and the unflappable Picard just wants this magic dingus off his bridge. We get one last costume from a time when, according to Q, “humans learned to control their military with drugs.”
Tumblr media
I always dress like this when taking drugs.
Tumblr media
With extra pockets (for more drugs).
One last accessory I need to mention before we leave the bridge is the lovely brass-coloured sash on Worf, which won’t survive to season 2. It has a neat little fringe and some kind of presumably-Klingon emblem, but looks a bit odd where it joins at the hip.
Tumblr media
Do not look at me from that angle.
Oh, there’s also a story happening, and emergency circumstances force most of the crew to evacuate to the saucer section, which detaches and flees to safety – a very useful maneuver I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty of times!
As everyone moves about the ship, we get to see quite a few interesting ideas of what civilian clothing might look like in the 24th century:
Tumblr media
Shortcut to futuristic clothing: angles.
Including the pleasant surprise that, on this Enterprise, men finally get to wear skants too!
Tumblr media
Those legs deserve no less!
Unsatisfied that the crew is trying to get on with the episode, Q makes his new friends play on his terms, zooping them to his courthouse. As the presiding judge, he wears an incredible ensemble: floor-length black and red robes, red leather gloves, a beautifully ornate necklace, and a very silly hat.
Tumblr media
His gathered audience, however, appears to be clad largely in scraps and bits of rope.
Tumblr media
Someone mentioned there would be craft services?
At least the court’s bailiffs are better dressed, in cool hats and robes with metallic details. There’s a lot going on with these costumes, and it’s a shame they don’t get more screentime.
Tumblr media
A six-foot staff goes with any outfit.
Elsewhere, oblivious and unbothered, some of the crew visit Farpoint Station, where things are suspiciously magically perfect, and everyone has good taste in fabric.
Tumblr media
A silk blend, at this price?!
Except for the sketchy guy in charge, whose flawlessly sci-fi name is Groppler Zorn. Zorn mostly just drapes himself in brown gauze, and doesn’t even do anything with his hair. He does accessorize with a tasteful necklace/chest piece, however, which appears to be made of nacre. Also, he is definitely up to something.
Tumblr media
Me? Nothing! …What was the question?
In a surprisingly touching passing of the torch, DeForest Kelley makes a cameo, reprising the role of Dr. Leonard McCoy to get one last Vulcan insult in before retirement. He wears a cozy grey sweater with interesting epaulets that probably have nothing to do with his rank over a black shirt and trousers. I love the detail of tucking the pants in over the boots in a poofy way like the TOS uniforms.
Tumblr media
Back in my day, boy, androids could only be plot devices.
Last but absolutely not least, the pilot episode gives us a peek of the REAL reason we’re all here: Wesley sweaters.
Tumblr media
Magnificent. Breathtaking. Exceptionally brown.
Tumblr media
It’s giving 2364 – and yet – solidly 1987.

Thirteen times Sisko would’ve handled things differently than Picard
(The Star Trek: Picard one has spoilers for Picard 2x02)
Measure of a Man
PHILLIPA: I have completed my research, based on the Acts of Cumberland passed in the early twenty first century. Data is the property of Starfleet. He cannot resign and he cannot refuse to cooperate with Commander Maddox.
SISKO: I see. Would you be so kind as to explain to me the historical context of Earth’s laws delineating people and property in the, oh, two centuries prior to the establishment of this law?
PHILLIPA: I’m…afraid I didn’t cover that as part of my research.
SISKO: Look again.
Redemption
WORF: Captain Sisko, I understand you wanted to see me.
SISKO: Mr. Worf, you have a personal history with Duras.
WORF: Yes, sir. He murdered K’Ehleyr, my mate.
SISKO: And I understand that gives you the right to vengeance under Klingon law.
WORF: Yes, sir. Her honor demands it. As the father of her child, I would dishonor her memory and myself by failing to avenge her.
SISKO: Of course. However, I’m afraid that as a Starfleet officer, your duty supersedes your personal need for vengeance.
WORF: I…understand, sir.
SISKO: Not yet. You see, Mr. Worf, Duras has become…a problem.
WORF: I’m not sure I understand, sir.
SISKO: Effective immediately, you are relieved of all of your Starfleet duties for the next forty-eight hours. I trust you will find an appropriate venue to vent your frustration.
WORF: Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.
Cause and Effect
WORF: Perhaps we should reverse course.
SISKO: Agreed.
Encounter at Farpoint
Q appears in a flash
Q: Thou are notified that thy kind hath infiltrated the galaxy too far already. Thou art-
SISKO: Punches Q in the face
DATA: Excellent form, sir.
SISKO: I don’t know what came over me. Lt. Yar, take the intruder to the brig.
Q: Don’t bother. I’m going to find someone more sporting.
Q disappears in a flash
Chain of Command
JELLICO: How many duty watches does the crew stand?
RIKER: We've a standard four shift rotation.
JELLICO: …Oh. I'd also like to examine the duty roster and the crew evaluations as soon as possible. I want readiness reports from each department head by fourteen hundred hours, and a meeting of the senior staff at fifteen hundred.
RIKER: Sir, I already have the readiness reports right here and the senior staff is ready to meet with you as soon as you’ve finished going over them. Captain Sisko felt you’d like to move fast.
JELLICO: Uh, thank you. I’ll also want a bypass installed between the main phaser array and the secondary generators. I also want to run the main deflector pathway through the warp power grid and the auxiliary conduits through the lateral relays. You may have to reconfigure the transfer interface.
RIKER: Sir, Captain Sisko already had us make those modifications two weeks ago. He said something about them coming in handy on the Hood.
JELLICO: Yes…Commander, who wrote this report on Cardassian psychology?
RIKER: Captain Sisko, sir. He had the whole senior staff read it. I thought it was especially interesting how he compared them to timber wolves.
JELLICO: Mmm.
RIKER: Sir? Would you like to meet with the senior staff now?
JELLICO: What? Oh, no, I don’t think that will be necessary. I’m going to need some time to go over these reports.
RIKER: Very good, sir. Captain Sisko said you’d already know where your quarters are, but would you like me to escort you to them?
JELLICO: No…no, that won’t be necessary…
RIKER: Yes, sir. In that case, I’d just say how much I and the rest of the crew are looking forward to working with you before I return to duty.
JELLICO: Yes…so am I…
Star Trek: First Contact
WORF: We have lost contact with deck sixteen. Communications, internal sensors, everything. I was about to send a security team to investigate.
SiSKO: No! Seal off deck sixteen. Mr. Worf, do we still have control of the transporters?
WORF: Yes, sir.
SISKO: Beam warp coolant directly into the ventilation system on deck sixteen.
DATA: Sir, warp coolant is highly corrosive to organic material. The order you have given is unlawful under the Geneva Protocol of 2155.
SISKO: 2155…and the current year is?
DATA: 2063, sir.
WORF: Transport now in progress. Internal sensors coming back online…detecting organic residue but no Borg lifesigns.
Star Trek: Generations
SORAN: Time is the fire in which we burn, Captain.
SISKO: You want to remind me of my wife’s death, fine. You’re not the first man who’s tried to rile me up. But listen to me closely, Dr. Soran, because I’ll only say this once. If you can’t take the heat, stay out of my kitchen.
Soran walks off
SISKO: Sisko to security. I want Dr. Soran’s research on the station investigated immediately and under no circumstances is he to be allowed to leave the ship.
WORF (O.S.): Understood, Captain.
Star Trek: Picard
Q: And all carried out by the same withering hand.
SISKO: And who might that be?
Q: Why, the greatest general the mighty Confederation of Earth has ever seen. The most bloodthirsty, merciless, ruthless human to ever set out to conquer the galaxy. You, of course.
SISKO: Are you telling me that in this reality I was responsible for countless war crimes? That I, the emissary of the Prophets, murdered Gul Dukat with my bare hands? That I’m expected to slaughter the last Borg Queen onstage like some kind of magic trick?
Q: That’s right! Horrifying, isn’t it?
SISKO: I think I can live with it.
Q: Wait, what?
Rascals
SISKO JR: Can't you just turn on the kid's computer in schoolroom eight? We just want to play a few games.
RIKER: I don't know if they'll let me do that, Benjamin, but I will ask.
SISKO JR: Thank you, Number One.
*Suspicious look from Ferengi*
SISKO JR: He's my number one Dad.
Ferengi looks back and forth between Riker and Sisko, confused and suspicious
RIKER: He’s adopted.
The Survivors
KEVIN: No, no, no, no. You don't understand the scope of my crime. I didn't kill just one Husnock, or a hundred, or a thousand. I killed them all. All Husnock everywhere. Are eleven thousand people worth fifty billion? Is the love of a woman worth the destruction of an entire species? This is the sin I tried so hard to keep you from learning now. Why I wanted to chase you from Rana.
SISKO: I understand precisely how you feel.
Sarek
RIKER: And the Ambassador?
SAREK: I am myself again. It has been a long time.
Cut to crew quarters
O’BRIEN: NOOOOOO!!! It is wrong. It is wrong!
SISKO: Maybe I should have taken his place.
CRUSHER: With your temper? We’d need Worf and half of security just to keep you in your own quarters.
O’BRIEN: Bedlam! Bedlam!
The Wounded
SISKO: One more thing. Maxwell was right. Those ships weren’t carrying scientific equipment, were they? A research station within arm's reach of three Federation sectors? Cargo ships running with high energy subspace fields that jam sensors?
MACET: If you believed the transport ship was carrying weapons, Captain, why didn't you board it as Maxwell requested?
SISKO: Take this message to your leaders. We'll be watching…Gul Dukat.
The Drumhead
SATIE: I understand you’re the ship’s tailor, Mister…
GARAK: Garak will do fine.
SATIE: Captain Sisko was most insistent that I speak with you. I wonder why that might be?
GARAK: How odd. Why, he’s one of my best customers of course, but you certainly don’t seem to be the sort of person who would be interested in the services I provide.
SATIE: And what services might those be?
GARAK: Oh, I’ve been known to tie up a few loose ends every now and then.
SATIE: You’re a Cardassian. It’s quite unusual to find one of you on a Starfleet ship.
GARAK: Yes. I do hope that’s not a problem for you. We all have our prejudices, but, regrettably, some more than others.
SATIE: It’s not your species which concerns me, but your past. Your personnel file is almost completely devoid of any detail.
GARAK: Yes. Tragically lost in a computer accident, I’m afraid, and the Cardassian government isn’t exactly forthcoming on behalf of a nobody like myself. However, I can assure you it’s an almost entirely bland and unremarkable story compared to any of the storied officers on the ship.
SATIE: Really. Perhaps you’d like to enlighten me.
GARAK: Oh, I have a terrible memory, and it’s quite boring. I wouldn’t dream of wasting a Starfleet Admiral’s time with the story of my poor life choices.
SATIE: I must insist.
Two hours later
SATIE: He’s a spy! Damn you, he’s a spy and they’re all in on it! They’re all traitors to the Federation! Everything he says is a lie!
HENRY: Has she always been like this?
SISKO: It happened suddenly, I’m afraid.

Let’s talk transporters!
Like the Bridge, the Transporter Room in  Star Trek: The Next Generation was always evolving. It started, in part, with the The Original Series’ transporter room:
Tumblr media
As I recall, the bottom disks had been either been salvaged or kept in storage and incorporated in the design of TNG’s transporters, flipped upside down so they were now at the top. The bottom had a glossy lightable circle with a smaller blue circle. The alcove panels were also meant to echo the frosted glass TOS transporter and they always looked a lil cloudy. As seen in Encounter at Farpoint:
Tumblr media
Problem was, no one knew where to stand on the pad when the cameras were rolling!  So after keeping the clean configuration for the entire first season, the first redesign came in season 2:
Tumblr media
Now we have basic lines delineating each individual pad. it’s not bad but it’s still missing something. It will remain that way throughout the 2nd and 3rd seasons as well as Star Trek V (we’ll get back to that).
The next major redesign came during the 4th season episode Remember Me:
Tumblr media
Now people are sure to know where to stand! Each individual pad space has been shrunk, including the central blue one, while also making it pop more visually. When in doubt, add lines (The interior design of the runabout would also follow that rule). This configuration would stay on for the remainder of the 4th and 5th season (and Star Trek VI, we’ll get back to that too). until one more change would be brought for the season 6 premiere:
Tumblr media
Speaking of making things pop, the backlit wall panels have been replaced.Gone is the frosted glass aspect, now the lines are cleaner. However, a small accident during Star Trek Generations’ production would damage those same panels, and a replacement was needed.
Tumblr media
Nearly identical, but lit differently. And only there for about 7 seconds on screen. The TNG transporter room doesn’t stop there. The top and bottom elements would be recycled for Voyager’s otherwise brand new transporter rooms:
Tumblr media
Voyager’s transporters would remain unchanged for the entire 7 year run. the top roundels that started in the 1960s would last until Voyager end in 2001.
Finally, the TNG transporter room sets also saw some use for the last two original series films. For Star Trek V:
Tumblr media
Filmed during TNG’s second season, includes a barely seen transporter control blast shield and some blue neon strips in the transporter bay. The isolinear stack that’s usually off to the side has also been removed.
Star Trek VI would dispense with the blue neon strips:
Tumblr media
Filmed between TNG’s 4th and 5th season, The transporter room is again a re-use of the TNG set. The blast shielded transporter controls are trotted back out, signage on the door is changed and, because it’s Nick Meyer, a fire extinguisher next to the door. The lighting elements to the right and left of the pad have also been swapped.

S1 E2 The Naked Now
Riker seems taken aback by the invitation for a wild party. At the very least it could be said the context is a bit unprofessional.
Every time Riker puts together an away team it's like he takes half the bridge staff
Looks like they had more of the frost stuff left over from Tasha in the first episode.
It's weird that Dr. Crusher's office seems to have vinyl vertical blinds.
Riker just sits on the console....
Wesley is a dork. How old is he supposed to be? He's put together audio clips to pretend he's on the bridge... If he were seven years old that would be understandable.
Deanna has a very different look this episode: she's out of the short skirt uniform, into a catsuit, and has her hair pulled up into a bun instead of the big curly halo.
I wonder if the creators chose to reuse a narrative base from the OST because it was safe and had worked before, or was it a desire to directly connect TNG with the OST to help ease the fans into it. Deforest Kelly's appearance in "Farpoint" serves to align TNG as a successor to OST for in-universe chronology; perhaps this was simply to reenforce that relative relationship.
I'm not sure how to interpret the characterisation that Tasha's loss of impulse control leaves her wanting to present as more traditionally feminine.
Wait ...the ship has stores? (Is there where Riker gets his blue shirts?) What about the replicators?
What's with the assistant chief engineer's jumpsuit?
I find Tasha's seduction of Data to be a little odd. Little has been revealed of Data's capabilities so far and this is a chance to establish some of what he is, but if he lacks emotions he shouldn't be attracted to Tasha, and since when is Tasha attracted to him? If in some respect she has lost her inhibitions, and is effectively intoxicated, can she really give consent? At the very least Data might treat this as a learning experience, but if he is unimpaired isn't it his moral duty to deny her request?
One of those weird and rare moment when Riker gets called "Bill". (Why does anyone ever call him that?)
When Geordi says "I've never seen a rainbow" I heard in my head 🎶reading rainbooooow 🎶 🌈 In fairness I knew LeVar for his show before I ever saw Star Trek
I enjoy seeing Riker carry Deanna. We still don't know what their past relationship was (I don't think we find out until Second Chances; I might be wrong.) If I remember right their overt affection sort of wanes as the show goes. However, the fact that Troi goes to Riker is a sort of emotionally driven parallel to Conundrum (I have issues with that episode I'll address when I get there.) That is all to say, when she has no self control she goes in search of Riker.
The dramatic music is a bit obtrusive. Is the whole series this way and I just don't remember it?
We don't know Riker very well yet but him just giving up is fairly out of character. What happened to the man who last episode wanted to beam aboard the alien jelly fish ship? He's just sitting there lamenting their situation.
And then they push off the ship and not the big rock....
And really mentioning Wesley in a log entry should be about the fact that he TOOK OVER THE SHIP. Saving the Enterprise was the least of his contribution.
This episode was one of many bonding experiences, and the first of many that should leave everyone in need of at least one therapy session.

it’s true love when you and your so have a long midnight conversation about the implications of a potential throwaway joke about Q knowing humans like to go to beaches for time off, but not really understanding why so he sends the discovery crew to pre-historic and pre-weather control Risa (a la ‘get those humans a beach, humans love beaches’) with no swimsuits or even a couple of pool noodles and suddenly finding yourself down a rabbit hole of
1. would a pre-TNG Q even know Risa is a thing??? (assuming he didn’t really give a shit prior to being assigned to evaluate humanity at Farpoint. therefore any interactions in the Discovery era would be purely for S&Gs)
2. would it even make sense for during or post-TNG Q to travel back in time to mess with any captain not named Picard (no)
3. would throwing in this joke accidentally imply that Q experience their personal history non-linearly like bajoran prophets? (i hope not because no)
fortunately this was all rendered irrelevant the next morning because apparently archer went to risa like once
