it’s been a week now. technically, william couldn’t have been happier. he’s started up a restaurant with his best friend and business partner, henry emily, and he’s got a family -- as does henry -- business is successful and booming, and he’s living his dream.

he should be happy.

but he ... isn’t. and he can’t place why, at first. 

he’s never been in touch with his emotions, but throughout the years, psychiatrists and psychologists ( was there a difference? they were all stuck-up pricks, in his opinion ) had told him to use a process of elimination. figure out why you’re upset by eliminating things you know bring you joy. 

... he’d, of course, neglected to say that joy was a fleeting, indescribable and usually unattainable feat. 

but he knows that he likes working. being at the diner, performing; that brought him joy -- or what he assumes is or could be joy, anyways, they never really seemed to be able to tell him what joy was, only that he should definitely have it and he was never explicitly sure that he did -- so did spending time with henry. so did being the center of attention. 

all of those things come from work. but at home? he can hardly find a thing that makes him joyful there. his wife’s a nag, in his eyes -- she expects too much from him. he’s already running a business, what else is there to do? -- and his children? well, they’re...

mediocre.

none of them have the same levels of self-discipline and hard-working attributes that he does, and it bothers him more than he cares to admit. none of them had a sense of passion or drive; without it, they’ll be nothing. nobodies. his children? nobodies?

it irks him. he doesn’t like being home. he doesn’t like being around his nag of a wife and his painfully average children.

but henry? henry emily? his business partner?

he was something beyond mediocre. he was beautiful. practically perfect in every way; henry was talented, hard-working with the drive and skill to back it; yet he was weak. quiet. shy. a pushover. someone who looked to william to do things he couldn’t do alone -- all of these things william liked most in a person, was the very personification of henry. and knowing that man felt like a gift. his greatest treasure.

his greatest joy.

henry was his greatest joy. 

and in realizing that, he’s drawn his own conclusions as to why he feels unfulfilled. because he needs henry. and he doesn’t have him; not wholly. william wants to have every single part of him, and let his brilliant mind, gentle hands and loving smile be shared with nobody but him.

he knows it now, and it’s clear.
