Mother complex ? more like a child missing his mom so badly he got traumatized, and the mother being the most important being in someone's life, no wonder it broke Arvis
Iirc Arvis honor killed anyone who trashtalked his mom and it was heavily implied he married Deedee bcs she looks like Cigyun ?
Obviously Kaga Era characters don't pour their psyche to the player in 4 convos, but imo Arvis's trauma isn't only about him "missing his mom".

amomg folks with canonical partners (including arvis x aida), who likely can be murdered by his wife and what for 😈
Iirc I believe she’s engaged to him but I can see Linoan murdering Arion since they’re on opposite sides of the war and Linoan could stay with Leif’s army to join Seliph’s invasion of South Thracia in order to liberate Tahra. It’s an interesting idea for a fic with these two and it would be interesting seeing her reaction to Arion’s stubbornness in Chp 9 of Fe4.
Now I would call this a murder because Arion is woefully weak to magic and Linoan is a Sage which in both Fe4 & 5 is pretty busted.

i'm fine with the course genealogy took with julius' possession, but the thought of it being just really gradual is for some reason funny to me, mostly because arvis didn't raise saias and the dude probably thinks that's just 'kids will be kids'
[arvis voice] well, he's at that age where he's demanding 'blood sacrifices'... you know how kids are! haha

The name of my blog
Written adaptations of FE games! They exist! And whilst many, many people have heard of the Oosawa manga, that’s far from the only adaptation of FE4. There’s the Nats manga, a comedic romp through gen 1 that conveniently ends just before Belhalla. There’s the Fuyuki manga, which I have not read but apparently it’s focused on gen 2. There’s the 4-komas… they’re 4-komas…
Then there’s the Suzuki novelisation, a very canon-compliant retelling of the entire game with a surprising amount of love for the game mechanics.
Now, there’s one very important game mechanic that any FE4 lover knows about: inheritance. The passing down of items from mother to daughter, father to son (unless you’re Brigid or Ethlyn). Radical. But in reality, how would that even work? Sigurd’s still holding on to his silver sword, right to the bitter end at Belhalla. But baby Seliph rode off 2 castles ago. How would the sword get from here to there? Did Arvis send it in the mail? Unlikely.
This is where the Suzuki short stories come in. My interest today lies in the 6th chapter of the first collection: A Thief’s Vow. I recommend giving it a read, but here’s a short summary regardless:
3 years after the battle of Belhalla, Dew visits Edain at the abbey in Tirnanog. They’re glad to see each other are safe, but Edain has taken a vow to never speak to an outsider, so their reunion is short. As he can no longer help Edain, Dew takes it upon himself to help her children, and the children of others. He spends the next 2 years recovering weapons and returning them to the gen 2 characters. He later dies whilst trying to recover Balmung from the Yied Shrine.
I like this story, and it’s one of the main basis for my interpretation of Dew. My Dew hasn’t gotten as far as gen 2, but it’s been a few years since Belhalla. He’s spent his time mourning, he’s built up his connections in Jugdral, he’s found the survivors and returned what he could… and he survived the Yied Shrine.
He’s still trying to keep up his playful demeanour, but he’s grown a lot from that childish thief locked up in Marpha.
Anyway, read the Suzuki novelisations if you haven’t already (especially gen 1)
As for the other short stories:
The Last of the Earth Dragon Tribe: Forsetti’s perspective on the miracle of Darna. Interesting stuff.
The Spirit Forest: Deidre’s childhood. A bit depressing.
General Aida: It’s about Aida. A personal favourite, but you can tell it was written pre-Thracia.
The Three Witches: Macbeth but it’s a dream the characters involved don’t remember. Good to know there are creatures in the FE universe that exist outside space and time.
Their Sealed Pasts: About Arvis and Deirdre’s relationship between their first meeting and the birth of their twins. Rika Suzuki draws Arvis very prettily, but the story itself is pretty squicky. (specifically in regards to Aida, this also has pre-Thracia vibes)
A Thief’s Vow: You are here!
The Killing Blow: After Belhalla, Brigid was put under house arrest by her previously unmentioned brother: Jale (fitting, because I want him to go to jail!). The biggest pre-Thracia vibes of them all.
The Phantom Horse: The ghost of Sigurd’s horse inspires a member of Sigurd’s army to join Seliph’s army. All things considered, pretty uplifting in the end.
My Child, Loptous: Julius slowly gets possessed. Fun if you’re interested in such things.
Vampire: Loptyr!Julius had a lover called Camilla to who he fed his blood. She then becomes immortal, kills a man, and marries for wealth. Also gives the information that even generations later, Eldigan’s descendants always keep the same hairstyle. It’s very out there, but it’s a personal favourite.
The Forested Land of the Lake: Jamke’s son Lester goes to sort out Verdane, a country that’s fallen to ruin. Genuinely, this is the story I recommend the most.

Note
At this point, given the edit wars and stuff, it's not the Fire Emblem wiki at least for Fodlan related material. It's the Edelgard wiki.
Not only for Fodlan, anon.
Arvis was also heavily edited, we have this :
Tumblr media
Jury's out on what Arvis was doing to "atone", rescuing the children being hunted with Ishtar? Maybe, because child hunts BaD, but what about torching innocent peons? Like how did he atone for Lex's funeral, did he do something for Lex's children? Ditto for Brigid (who totes died guys) - she will forever be remembered a traitor ?
I also hope Jugdral Echoes, if it is ever released, will explain more why the fuck Arvis couldn't fry Manfroy when he caught Julia under his nose, no amount of "I'm powerless" can work when we meet him later - is it psychological manipulation or something? And yet he gives her Deedee's circlet, but let's be real, if Manfroy didn't went bananas for plot reasons, Julia would be dead, and Jugdral fucked (because Seliph, lore-wise, cannot defeat Loptyr-Julius, only Julia can!).
There's also no mention that in the ideal world he built before Julius read a book, Isaach was a giant brothel, Silesse was embittered in War and people are starving (revealed in FE5) and Reptor was sending his armies to slaughter a child (revealed again in FE5). Not the "Tru Piss" - I mean, ideal world free from prejudice we could expect.
There's also this tidbit I love :
Tumblr media
Arvis loved Azelle so much in FE4 that he, uh, respected his decision to join Siggy's army, and torched him.
At least the manga tries to have him "convince" his brother to switch sides!
(and of course, this page doesn't mention Saias nor Aida at all because eff FE5 I guess)
I love Arvis, as the red Emperor he is without any uwufest and who becomes Oldvis when he realises how fucked Jugdral is with his actions (and how he had been manipulated by Manfroy), and I really like his end, how it is revealed he and Ishtar saved all children (somehow) and how he ultimately helps Seliph...
But there is a lot of fuckery regarding the Julia plot point (seriously he accepts to die for Seliph but doesn't put his life on the line for Julia???) and ultimately, Saias's existence reveals a lot about his dad.

Then why don't the endings reference fe4 then?
Because the references are almost never that explicit, and when they are (ex. Owain referencing the subtitles of past games) it’s in a goofy comedic context. To use a straightforward example from Three Houses, all of the paid DLC classes are taken from Awakening, even up to most of their visual design elements. Anyone who’s played FE13 would recognize this instantly, but the game never calls attention to it and in fact draws no connection between Awakening and Abyss, Cindered Shadows, or the Ashen Wolves at all. The most overt it ever gets is Anna having an alternate trickster costume and portrait, but there’s nothing outright saying that that’s a reference to her appearance as a playable character in Awakening.
Similarly, Edelgard’s alter ego shares a title with Arvis, but you’d have to be familiar with FE4 (or his Heroes incarnation maybe?) to know that he is the original Flame Emperor. Hubert has visual design similarities the series’s numerous evil sorcerers from Gharnef and Manfroy up to Validar, Iago, and Jedah, and he fulfills the same role as many of them in being the #2 of the main villain possibly with plans of his own. The Death Knight is a (poor) riff on Tellius’s Black Knight, another co-conspirator of a main villain. The Agarthans as a whole are part of FE’s line of evil cults with Jugdral’s Loptous sect as the most obvious point of reference in how they’ve wormed their way into positions of influence across the continent and have set themselves up as major backers of Arvis’s empire.
CF also includes some subtle callbacks to Chapter 5 of Genealogy. Claude and Hilda make a visual parallel with the similarly-colored Quan and Ethlyn who die in the Yied Massacre, and there’s some irony at work involving the wyverns in that battle as well. The feint toward Fhirdiad to kill Cornelia instead mirrors Arvis killing off his own allies, especially when his lieutenant Aida openly turns on Reptor and aids your army in killing him. The last chapter could also be read as a version of Arvis’s infamous execution of Sigurd. Everything is on fire, Rhea’s loved one (Byleth/Sothis) opposes her and doesn’t seem to be aware that anything is wrong, and this treachery ends in triumph for Edelgard and dominion over the continent. It’s pretty subtle compared to some of the other classic villain protagonist/villain route imagery associated with Edelgard and CF - the red and black coloring, the ram horns, the darkness of the final cutscene in contrast to those of the other three all using sunlight in different capacities, Edelgard’s boss theme playing rather than Rhea’s implying that you’re fighting with the final boss - but it is there. Plus, as @fantasyinvader pointed out in a reblog CF’s ending cards and its looming postgame war against the Agarthans indicate that it’s far from a happy and stable ending, which also tracks with what we know of Jugdral’s interbellum period.
Except the devs clearly wanted her to have her happy ending
Some of the developers did, hence why CF exists. The others were apparently fine with leaving her as the sympathetic main antagonist and having her killed off in the tradition of Hardin, Zephiel, Rudolf, etc. It’s just that even with that in mind CF can’t fully commit to the heroic revolutionary waifu fantasy when it’s incorporating all of these more sinister elements that make it more suggestive of a villain route. In trying to be both it mostly fails at both.
