Letting Nature Guide Me

Here I am, finally making a post. I am not sure what to open with here but I figured I would lead with explaining a part of my day that has turned into something that feeds my brain joy and hope. I am someone who struggles with control and letting go of it. I am a perfectionist. I would say I gained this quality from my service in the Army but I think part of why I had my shit together in the Army was because I am a perfectionist. I was never taught how to trust the process, and I used to think that wasn’t something any one could learn. The last few years I have had low energy and simply do not have enough spoons to enjoy what I once loved, gardening. I have a dead area of my yard that I have hated, and so this spring/summer I replanted it with wildflower seeds and cat mint bushes. With the lack of “spoons” I found that I was able to just water and care for my garden but there is zero planning in it. I am slowly converting my lawn to an alternative lawn, it is clover and self heal heavy! I found that going and caring for my little seeds and then sprouts and now flowers has become the best part of MY day. My days are truly great, but this is the one thing that is mine. The garden is chaotic and has zero order. I have found my time tending to it is spent appreciating what I once feared: the uncontrollable. The bachelor buttons were the first to blossom, but I now have allysum, California poppies, and forget-me-nots are all beginning to bloom. Though it is late in the season because of my lateness on sowing, I hope the weather will allow for proper seeding. I don’t want to hold my breath, and make huge plans than may overwhelm me; this Spring I want to expand, and make it a low energy chaotic garden with anything I can sow in my yard! I am on my own self-love, self discovery, self healing journey. I have many things I have to work through; balancing them felt impossible and overwhelming. With my chaotic garden to guide me, I will just have to trust the process to heal myself. I don’t know if I will heal, I don’t know how it will happen or when. I suppose I just have to trust the process.

From my hometown of Greenville, SC Last Sunday my head was still in the clouds from my promotion ceremony in the Army. Achieving the rank of NCO was something I had aspired for since re enlisting in 2021. Little did I know that another life changing moment would happen 24 hours later. Getting the phone call that I was officially being named Miss. South Carolina for America Strong 2022 was almost as surreal as being addressed as Sergeant for the first time. Was this real life? I thought, did they have the right number? I recently posted that my participation in this #pageant was never about winning. It was never about the gowns or hair and makeup. It was never about beating other women or coming in first place. It was and always has been about the platform of pageantry for me. Maximizing the opportunities and exposure the crown allows was where my focus and efforts lied as I prepped for competition. Of course the sparkly dress and perfect hair/makeup was a plus because who doesn't love to look and feel their best BUT I was mission focused on creating conversations about the staggering number of unemployed Veterans across the state of South Carolina and providing representation for single, #femaleveterans. It's no secret that I did not win the title of Miss SC for America Strong 2022 back in May. But it's also no secret that I have remained mission focused on #Veteran initiatives, Veteran employment opportunities, Veteran outreach efforts and continuing to share the importance of femininity in uniform through podcasts and my work with my personal platform Boots To Ballgowns. And I view this unforeseen and remarkable opportunity I've been given to carry out the 2022 reign just as much part of my story as getting 1st RU was. You see, I actually think this was Gods plan all along. And who am I to stand in the way of devine providence? How many competitors get a 2nd chance at fulfilling their dream of representing their State and leaving an impact only they could leave. So heres to the next 80 days.
