of. of all the superman villains. mark could have chosen. to make. a cameo.
he. had. to choose. FERLIN NYXLY?!?
THE only superman villain i have a personal grudge against. my enemy. ferlin FUCKING nyxly. whose ‘villain’ ‘origin story’ is. literally that he HAD my DREAM JOB (head curator of musical instruments at metropolis museum) but was UNHAPPY about it because he wanted to be a concert pianist instead. and also he was BAD AT HIS JOB. which. again. is a ludicrously difficult field to find ANY work in let alone a full time position... like PLEASE resign and let me take over... i do not have qualifications but i would be better at it because i would WANT to be there
anyway the rest of the comic is good or something. more thoughts on that later i just got very distracted by ferlin nyxly

Just finished reading Morrison’s Action, and I’m a bit confused about the whole *SPOILERS* Nyxly hiding in the red of Superman’s crest thing… The sole purpose of that is to have the scene in which Clark uses the wish to get the unified field equation? Also, is the Legion’s role in the finale to get Mxy to tell Ferlin he’s part of Vyndktvx? What about “5-D words are like thunder”? Isn’t Ferlin the only one that needed to say his name backwards?
1. No, he put together the Unified Field Equation on his own back in #14 to save the scientists on Mars; the wish was to bring them back to life from Vyndktvx killing them at the end of that issue.
2. As I recall they initially head back to interrogate Mxyzptlk on how to save Superman; once they figure out Ferlin is part of Vyndktvx they rope him in into saying his name backwards and ram their time bubble into Superdoomsday as another layer of attack against him.
3. The 5-D words of everyone's names being spoken backwards hurts Vyndktvx enough - along with the other layers of attack going on - that he ultimately says his own name backwards just to retreat.

The Chronological Superman 1969-1971:
Some new foes for Superman in the turn of the decade: Aarbur-Z is a deadly galactic criminal whose malevolent mind inhabits a costume which sucks the energy from those who wear it (Action Comics 383). He’s defeated with help from another possessed costume, that of intergalactic peace officer Enforcer NS-II.
In Action Comics 380, Dorx and Krit of the Liquidators try out for the Superman Revenge Squad.
The Quarmer (aka The Superman of Quarrm, the Super-Sandman, etc) is rudely dragged from its own dimension to ours, taking Superman’s form as his own and leeching the Man of Steel’s powers. The intention was ultimately to reduce Superman’s powers by half, although other writers brought him back to full-power quickly and quietly.
Accomplished but unhappy musician Ferlin Nyxly wields The Devil’s Harp -- which grants all wishes -- and uses it to overshadow Superman as the mighty ... PAN! He gives Superman a hard time of it, tiny goat horns and baggy trousers notwithstanding.

The Kid Who Saved Superman!
Tumblr media
Superman #253. June, 1972.
By Dennis O’Neil, Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson.
Ferlin Nyxly acquires an alien suit of armor and a super-slingshot from a building which phases in and out of the desert, and uses it to fight Superman. The Man of Steel also meets Billy Anders, whose mind is inexplicably transferred into his pet lynx, and sees the Martian Manhunter within the phasing building.

From DC Wikia
“Inexplicably” is a good term. Although it is explained in the issue that it is the slingshot that caused the change, Superman throws it to the sun, dooming the poor kid to share his life with a lynx.

Funny enough, this is not the end of the story, and it doesn’t properly continue in the next issue.
The art is of course iconic, but the story should make sense.
I give the issue a score of 6.50.

Top 10 Superman characters you wish to God Curt Swan had stayed alive long enough to draw?
Off the top of my head: Jon Kent, Conner Kent, Kal Kent, Leo Quintum, Xa-Du, I suppose Doomsday just to see what that would look like, Vyndktvx (though he DID co-create Ferlin Nyxly, because drawing a 5D-splinter of character 40 years before their creation is just how Curt Swan rolls), Electric Blue Superman, Livewire, and Solaris.

Superman #235
Kent’s new boss, Morgan Edge, wanted Superman trashed and he ordered Kent to make that happen. Edge was working for Darkseid. Ferlin Nyxly was a musician who wanted revenge against Superman for making him look like a loser. He had a Devil’s Harp that made it possible for him to become powerful enough to fight Superman. He got help from the sand-creature to stop Ferlin.
