Watched The Time Machine (1960) with @celticarche courtesy of the new Fiberwire super fast internet at Sparkle House. Haven’t seen this in years. I was super obsessed with it as a teen. When I was about 8 or 9 I watched the Wishbone episode and I was inspired to read the book when I “grew up”...which I did. It remains my favorite book. Anyhow, watching this film (and the Wishbone episode) with Cindy last night reminds me that I want to write an essay on H. G. Wells original novella....something about the regulation of time and the establishment of modernism.

Tales of a Madman 120. (Hunger)

You take a bite and your teeth sink into rotten flesh, you savour this moment for you have not eaten is such a long time. You lick your lips, the turgid clotted blood still taste like sweet copper. With relish and delight you crack the bones, suckling the precious marrow within. You remember with distant fondness and regret, that you once vowed to never eat flesh but was when the world was alive. That was before the forests of the world died. When the cloud turned sickly green and the fields of corn wilted and the forest melted with it, all the creatures turning foul.

Mankind, in all it’s high technological grandeur did not know what caused this,some turned to faith and blamed the others, the sinners, the non-believers.That this was a punishment of their God, that this was the judgement for the wicked, the sick, the strange. They were the first ones to die as they stripped themselves and waited for the Rapture. All they was given were the sickness which burned their flesh by an invisible fire. Other turned to their machines, their fiberwires, their precious logic.These people survived for a time until, in a moment despair when they had the cure at hand, was betrayed by their own self serving greed.You were just, nobody. A fool, with big dreams of nothingness, a wannabe nihilist, you smiled and laughed at the others as they burned and withered away. You cried, because you became alone by dead people, dead everything else, walking and running with abandon and panic and you seemingly were forever changed.You roared, because the invisible fire didn’t kill you, it burned yes, but only in your mind. You met others, who didn’t die or so you thought, a knife seemed to kill them easily enough.The first time it was an accident, the second it was a mistake and the third was because of the hunger. But the unseen flame didn’t kill, no it just was and always were a constant reminder of pain.Now years, no more than that, surely it must have been? Yes. Decades after the Invisible Fire, you scavenge and murder, feast on rotten flesh, the flesh it was a blessing and curse, for the more you ate the pain dulled but you felt sick to your soul everytime you did. You felt unclean. But the hunger finally fades but you feel like monster. You are a monster now, nothing but a gaping void which hungers.You’ll eat everything, flesh, mold and fungus, anything that would grant sweet relief for this pain you feel, the disgust, this self-loathiness which wringles like fetid worms inside your mind, inside your skull, just behind the eyes. Nothing and all, that is the desire of your Hunger.
