#fine. Jason is a wolf in sheeps clothing

Caleb can think what he wants about Billy but that opinion of Jason was so fucking crazy to read about. The character held up Lucas at gunpoint and yelled at him to put his hands up and also said to him that he "thought he was one of the good ones." I don't want to tell him what to think but the racism coding was clear to me with that character. Not to mention one of Jason's friends also pushed down a whole child, being Erica, and told her he was gonna break her arms/legs. Like? This is a good person to y'all? I get that he misses chrissy and its fine to feel sorry for him in that regard. But let's not be delusional. Jeez louise. Even if you hate Billy, Jason's not any better when you put him up to the same standards, just because he was nice to Lucas at first doesn't mean anything. He was only nice to him when he was working for him. & did everything to please him and be on the team and fit in. That was kind of the whole point of the narrative. Lucas realized he didn't wanna be like him because the quality of his character was ass. Anyways, sorry for going on a rant in your ask box. I'm just shocked at the amount of people defending Jason whether it's because they hate that people ship Eddie with chrissy because it gets in the way of their "steddie" ship (a whole other issue I won't get into here, tldr; fandom misogyny). Or it's because they somehow need to make Billy look worse. Like, you can hate them both if you want no one is stopping you. Just because Jason's dumber than Billy doesn't mean he's a good person. I don't need to feel sorry for him just because he's stupid enough to fall for satanic panic brainwash, he still chose to be awful to people and witch hunt. Also, had Billy lived, narratively, he had way more potential for a redemption arc than Jason EVER could. Even though he started out as a bad person. Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. Stranger things fans are nuts and can't seem to watch anything with media literacy or nuance.
Jason being the one people decided to have sympathy for is…. Suspicious. Smells a little bit of classism to me tbh on top of the complete dismissal of billys entire personality being a trauma response that antis never give a shit about
Everyone in these past few years wanted to act so woke and condemn the upper middle class white boys who are always doing shit, but the second they’re presented with a fictional character who is the physical embodiment of white male privilege it’s “well his girlfriend died :/ no I get it” why? Because he’s better at hiding how rank his personality is? Because he fooled y’all thinking he was some straight laced safe guy?
Liiiiike HELLO???
If you wanna call billy racist and condemn his behavior then fine. That’s your prerogative. But the fact that billy doesn’t get a pass but JASON does ??? That does not sit right on any level

First of all, I would just like to know what you did in your past life for this fine-ass man to want to be the object of your affections.
It’s pretty much an open secret amongst both the Bat-family and the general public (to some extent) that he’s the black sheep in the sea of children Bruce had adopted. Even with the whispers of his broken past and nefarious deeds, he’s going to shock you with his quiet demeanor enhanced by his devilish looks.
You’d expect him to have armfuls of women at his beck and call, but his introverted bookworm personality DEFINITELY leaves you a lot more vulnerable and interested in his charms.
Yet, that does not remove how much this man still boasts a lot of red flags under plain sight.
A wolf in sheep's clothing through and through, his hot temperament and violent streak only cover up the hole in his heart to be desired and loved.
Your relationship with him is most likely going to be an amalgamation of Bruce’s and Dick’s towards their respective darlings but obviously with Jason’s strife and behavior to the situation.
For one, you both are in this push-and-pull relationship. It may seem like you are doing most of the work and being the most affected, but that notion couldn’t even be more wrong. Jason’s definitely struggling to make sense of his feelings. He's never felt this intense of emotions towards someone romantically and he just knows the unhealthy urges of keeping you safe are further heightened by his traumatic experiences.
But what makes him more shaken is how a possessive streak accompanies these selfish desires. He’s honestly impressed at how everything he comes across reminds him of you. No trinket or item is too outlandish enough to remember your face, your mannerisms, your personality. Everything.
And unlike most of his family members who slowly go through this process or are immediately immersed into this fucked up sense of thinking, his will power to resist these urges are definitely commendable. But not for long.
Because as soon as Jason buries his guilt and insecurities under his veil similar to how he handles most of his problems, you’re just going to wish he was a lot more hesitant and aloof towards you.
This man is the trigger-happy one in the family and it carries over to his love-life.
Expect every ex, past lover, rivals, and threats to be dealt with at some point or another. Jason would give a period of time or some leeway if they currently have lovers of the sort; but if they allude to or decide to pursue interest in you - they’re definitely disappearing before you could even notice.
Despite his supposedly meat-head personality, he’s still a bat through and through and remains to be calculated and controlling of the situation at all times. If he doesn’t beat the crap out of them, then he’ll make their demise or disappearance an accident or an unfortunate event. Think a villain coincidentally orchestrating their various crimes in the same vicinity as they are.
He thinks he’s real slick with it too, but I think Jason can’t completely cover up his oozing red flags during this period. He’s a lot more quiet and seemingly uncaring about what happens to you in the beginning but now there’s a lot of more tense silence and expressive body language.
You’re definitely caught in between the crossfire of this new development and you’re left bursting at the seams of what happens next.
But aside from the initial hesitance, Jason is a soft romantic.
He’s a reader, he’s seen the in’s-and-out’s as well as the epitomes of romance various couples share and with a solemn expression definitely wishes he would experience the same. The yearning doesn’t go unnoticed though, since he’s picking up the pace now mostly in touch with his feelings.
He’s like dark chocolate - bitter and unconventional, yet still sweet to the mouth whenever he does any type of gesture.
Sure, he still performs the traditional acts of romance - giving you flowers, trinkets that remind you of him, and such but there’s this signature touch of subtlety. While Dick and Bruce are very transparent with their advances (wanting to show you from the get-go how their affections translate when they are with you), Jason - the ever so cunning man that he is - wants to tease you and let the feeling linger. He wants to keep you guessing and on your toes, be it some biting joke that leaves you speechless once you understand the punchline or an experience that leaves you blushing.
Unlike his usual escapades, he’s a lot more soft and vulnerable than his family members give him credit for.  He never thought he was capable of doing the sappy things he would do in this period of his life. When he’s awake in the dead of night, he stares at the empty side of his bed and just imagines your warm figure damp on the mattress. He traces the letters of your name in comfort when he’s anxious, and his teammates tease him endlessly when they manage to catch him whispering your name in his sleep.
But those desires don’t cover up the trail of blood and guilt he’s left in his wake.
Surprisingly, he shares the same self-awareness / mindset as Dick - the only difference being he’s not wearing rose-tinted glasses about it.
Jason definitely wants to keep you unaware as much as possible of the eventual sins he’s done. As opposed to his family members who find it logical that their darlings should not want to find their activity for obvious reasons (i.e they don’t want their darlings to leave them), he’s much more upfront that he doesn’t want to taint or dirty you with his actions. Dick’s main shtick as a yandere is that his darling liking him is above all else; while Jason wants the same he also understands another much darker side to this which is if his darling finds out and understandably reacts negatively, it further proves he is a bad person.
But if he’s not having bouts of existential crises, then much like the other bats he’s a master stalker as well.
He definitely monitors you in person, walking from roof-top to roof-top to investigate your whereabouts. He’s also really fond of visiting your place of residence and learning more about you behind the scenes. I’d like to think he lounges a lot in your kitchen, he looks around your cupboards and takes note of all the different produce and snacks you consume. He’s an absolute domestic king and he likes learning about your different preferred brands and items.
Hell, sometimes you arrive from work and you could feel the couch or bed a bit too warm from where you last left it…
Other than that, Jason’s definitely an interesting case and a departure from both Bruce and Dick in his yandere escapades; as he still allows his guilty subconscious to seep into his love life.
Tumblr media
t. drake
A lot of people like to undermine or underestimate the darkness that is in Tim whether through a yandere perspective and in the general sense - and that definitely makes it all the more shocking when you come to the revelation that maybe he isn’t so innocent after all.
When this man gets attached, he gets ATTACHED. Like no semblance of logic or intellect would be able to deter him from his plans to keep you to himself or in a more positive life - have you love him. If he can somehow force Bruce into adapting him as his son, then he can have you in his arms at the end of whatever year he decides is best for you - trust.
With that in mind, an important part of his character that is repeatedly pointed out is his obsession and his stalker-ish tendencies. If he was not in love with you, the man would definitely be much more criticized by his family for his behavior.
He’s the typical yandere archetype; researching as much as he can about his beloved, trailing after them wherever they go, having the most basic and intricate information about you memorized, and most likely having a shrine on you in the bat-cave or any other safehouse he has. Tim would definitely be in the opening scene of some stalker film if you see him in this state, messy room, trash everywhere, eyes flickering to the screens and CCTVs of any information and current whereabouts, eyebags on full display - the whole seven yards.
He’s one of the most alarming yandere’s to have since there’s something about him that makes him so creepy - and that’s already considering the stalking, murking, and other fucked up habits the other Batfamily members possess.
When he watches you through the cameras, his brothers and even Bruce are even unnerved at how creepy he looks. Eyes fully blown, tongue licking his lips at random intervals, and heavy breathing at the exhaustion of his line of work. He looks dead on the inside yet somehow he remains a shell of himself whenever he gets into one of these moods. Definitely slouches at his chair and would be at the desk for hours if he was not pulled away by them or Alfred.
Tim has a suave persona he’s mastered to a T around the public eye and somehow even with practice that manages to quiver when he’s around you.
Jason definitely jokes at the fact that if he didn’t know any better, he would have thought it was his first time talking to another human being since his brother is so damn awkward. It’s definitely subtle enough that a normal person wouldn’t notice but his family members know damn well he’s dying on the inside out of shyness. Shifting eyes, always interrupting you but never meaning it in a malicious way, rubbing his neck, smiling forcibly, and the list goes on. He’s too excited and nervous at the same time, so forgive him for his actions.
If the previous excerpts didn’t solidify that this man is more of a watcher than a participator, then one attribute that he absolutely inherited from Bruce is the ability to become a shadow.
All of the Batfamily help each other in their yandere escapades of stalking and murdering, but in the former’s portion, there’s always some kind of preference or route they would like to take. Dick, Jason, and Damian all prefer stalking you personally - as in following you rooftop to rooftop, and having the feeling of eyes pinned on your figure at all times. For Bruce and Tim, its technology. Cameras, detectors, CCTVs, if they can commit to it, they’ll do it.
It’s also because he sometimes daydreams and gets lost in his head that he becomes too careless in stalking you. There’s been enough times that you notice him in the dark of night or even see a flash of him during his patrol.
He’ll definitely try sneaking mini-microphones and cameras in every crevice of your belongings and your home, since he acknowledges he becomes too socially inept much to his chagrin when he’s around you.
He’s also an avid writer about it too, think of diaries and journals written in your honor. While the others mostly prefer recording everything digitally and skimming them over whenever they want, Tim treats it like personal entries about the development of your relationship and the observation of your person.
His intellect likes deducing and picking apart your psyche since he finds legitimately learning about someone through scientific and education perspectives to be very interesting - it means it gives him the opportunity to understand you in all the forms you come in.
That’s one of his greatest strengths as a yandere, since he’s very understanding and perceptive of how not only you work but the circumstances that surround you - that being potential rivals or anomalies like friends or family members. While yanderes typically associate the latter as a burden or a means to hinder their route towards their darlings, he knows they are vital in keeping you sane as a functional human being and he knows that every other possibility and situation will allow different ideologies and sides of you to reveal - and that means no kidnapping if he can help it.
But that doesn’t mean he’s going to be a doormat and let you do whatever you want. Since he’s sandwiched between Jason and Damian - much more trigger-happy and brutal yandere’s - his well-renowned intellect finally makes a comeback when it comes to any threats - whether it's towards your safety or your availability in your love life.
This man’s a thinker and he’s definitely exploring all the most efficient possibilities that will allow the worst outcomes to happen to his victim. Everything and anything is on the table when it comes to you and that’s the more intimidating part, since anything that has his darling involved only makes him more manipulative, cut-throat, and intelligent to be able to achieve his objectives. He’d typically resort to a little blackmail and have that person moved somewhere with contacts severely tied.
Tim also gets very pouty and moody when he gets jealous which is relatively easy to do despite his belief surrounding you with other people is important. He would be a bit more sarcastic, brash, and even inconsiderate when you catch him in one of his moods - much to the annoyance and even concern of the others if pushed towards it. He becomes the mini-me of Bruce in that sense, brooding, silent, and illogical if it counts.
If that somehow didn’t creep you out, then he’s relatively a good lover if he pulls himself together.
Very sweet, yet has an aura of silent reliance. Super wise and comforting to the point that he is always most likely to get approached by you whenever you have any problem much to his glee.
But don’t think he’s an absolute saint in that department either, because he’s going to manipulate you into affording better choices and lessening any possible rivals he has to deal with. Unlike the others who have some emotional tick when faced with a rival, he can mostly maintain a facade of being helpful yet collected.
He underestimates how cool and heart-pounding these interactions can be too. Soft-spoken, finally making proper eye-contact and even brushing his hand against yours just to seal the deal.
He’s one to watch out for and never underestimate since he not only holds refinement but determination in making you love him in spite of all his mishaps.
After all, you didn’t think all those blouses and sweaters disappearing were mere coincidences, did you?

Bruce and Talia as both yandere’s and parents already have terrible nuances, but that doesn’t come close to the combination and result of that pairing in the form of Damian.
While Bruce is a silent protector, Talia is the overbearing type. She has a distinct habit of always hovering over her darling like some mother bear always waiting for her child to fuck up one way or another. She’s there to pick up those pieces and will baby you even through the small missteps.
At an early age, Talia will subtly ingrate these mindsets towards her son though it won’t be the main priority of her parenting. She still wants to train him to be the ultimate assassin but her behavior definitely lingers even when Bruce inevitably adopts him.
That being said, when he’s young, Damian is definitely the tsundere type. Meaning he doesn’t necessarily understand when both platonic and romantic feelings arise so he’s left brushing them off and acting off aloof, similar to his dad but even worse.
It’s definitely the Al Ghul pride and you’ll be wondering what you did wrong to provoke his temper. Expect lots of snarky remarks, harsh expressions, and downright downgrading encounters whenever you two meet up.
Whether you’re his classmate or team-mate in the Titans, you would be begging all your superiors or guardians to keep you away from him.
For a time, this strategy works and it also makes Damian realize his inner turmoil.
His brothers, who are all variations of softies in different spectrums, warn him against this behavior and make him realize his true intentions of behaving that way. Hell, maybe even Bruce or Talia confront him on his actions and it gives their son the wake-up call that he needs.
What follows after is the period of mortification and guilt. This time will definitely be exacerbated if you further separate yourself from him; whether you move away or you avoid him (a power move since he has all the resources at his disposal to hunt you down), Damian’s going to be repenting for his sins in a whole new light.
When you’re separated, he mimics Bruce’s love language of gift-giving and opportunity. You wanted to win that scholarship? Boom, even sealed with the Wayne Enterprises signature of approval. You wanted to go on that vacation trip but you lack the funds to do so? Here’s all the vouchers and tickets you would ever need for the rest of your life.
Whether you're smart enough to realize his tactics and even half the bravery to stop them, he’s never going to stop and he’s finally going to strike the moment in which he finally meets you once more.
Depending on the timing as well as a culmination of different circumstances, he’s most likely going to be an adult (probably mid 20s - 30s) or hitting his early 20s, he really wants to make it up to you.
He’s a thorn at your side, always wanting to persistently remedy his actions with his wealth and status. If you weren’t already annoyed by that, then will the savior complex suffice? This is where he inherits his mother’s behavior since the anger issues get replaced by the tendency to always baby you. When you eventually get together, the safehouse he takes you to is baby-proofed and no object can be turned into a weapon whether you like it or not.
Out of all of his brothers, he’s most likely to kidnap you as well; and that is only because he never got the affection and attention he got from his darling and rightfully so. The only one I could see competing with him is definitely Tim since the latter lacks charisma and is incredibly shy. When he finally inherits the League of Assassins or remains a Gotham vigilante, he’s still going to be drowning you with anything you desire. Except freedom, of course.
Since the man is an heiress and technically a prince at best, he’s the traditional lover you would see in fantasy novels or old maritime films. He channels his inner romantic by writing you letters, reserving items for some of the most niche interests or desires you might have, and he definitely paints your face in canvases and sketchbooks under his behalf. His room, much to the chagrin of his other family members, would definitely be filled with your face and similar memorabilia you like and enjoy. He shows his affections quietly yet through a sleek and private eye. He only inherited from the best of the best, am I right?
He’s also surprisingly clingy as well. Well, all of the other Bat-brothers are but he’s almost on the same level as Dick. Blame it on the distance or blame it on him finally being with the love of his life.
But this man is still not a saint after years of development without you in the picture. Since his jealousy and possessiveness also evolved alongside his new much more caring and nurturing demeanor.
Back then, since you were relatively targeted by his harsh criticisms and behavior, you would most likely turn to other people for comfort and guidance.
Suffice it to say, Damian obviously didn’t like that.
In contrast to his much more loud-mouthed and obnoxious facade around you, he’d get eerily silent around his rival - always giving them the nastiest looks or death glares whenever they’re around you or even all by themselves. If they would provoke him, he’d fall for it with a snap of a finger because of his poor temperament. No matter how it would end, you’d be at your companion’s heels defending them and even comforting them - which leaves Damian oddly somber and would even leave you alone after the whole ordeal.
Since he was in denial, he could only brush off those encounters and even his rivals as mere nuisances, similarly to how he treats every inconvenience or challenge standing in his way.
But now, that predator-esque behavior still remains but a little more refined. It’s all in his more subtle body language, from the dip in his eyebrows or the occasional twitch from his eyes.
Depending on which stage he is in in his life as a full-fledged Wayne or an Al-Ghul, these transactions could go one of two ways. Since Jason is one of the only actively trigger-happy members in the family, he tends to be begrudgingly lenient yet still on the look-out for any possible fuck-ups or advances committed. And by lenient, I mean 1 shot and you’re out. That means murder, blackmail, kidnapping, or any other atrcocity the League of Assassins can commit. Even if he is Robin or a heroic mantle, Ra’s and Talia would be happy to do any clean up under his name.
Speaking of League of Assassins, they’re going to trail your ass whether you like it or not. Same goes to the Bat-family and they’re very proactive about it too. Considering Damian started with a twisted view of love in general accompanied by the fact that he was not exactly known for having the most friends back in the day, they are going to do everything just so you both could end up together.
That’s what makes Damian one of the most formidable yanderes since not only does he have a plethora of connections from heroes and villains alike, but he tends to get babied because of his traumatic experiences.
 It’s undeniable he’s a brat but he somehow gets people to still care for him at best and be there for him at his worst through a mere beck and call.
 And with enough hard-work and perseverance, he needs you to do the same. Willingly.

Bat boys as things my siblings have said:
Dick: “Glitter is my life line.”
Jason: “Violence is a virtue”
Tim: “wolfs in sheep’s clothing, are sheepshifters”
Duke: “I am the only sane person in this house…unless it’s Tuesday, then we all crazy”

Do you think you could write an Au where Bruce Wayne is Marinette's bio!dad, but they don't learn that until she interns under Tony Stark, please?
@jumpingjoy82
Okay so disclaimer I mainly know marvel through fanfics and a couple of the MCU movies. Having said that this was a fun write hope you like it.
Oh and Marinette knows Tom isn’t her bio dad. Tony is Sabine’s cousin.
~~~~~~~~~~
Marinette was a lot of things. She was a dancer, a gymnast, a bio chem major, an engineer, an amateur detective, a superhero, and completely over her class at idiots who followed a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Marinette was actually done with high school. In fact she was two years into her first Masters degree along with skipping two years. Making her two years younger than the sheep in her class and at least four years younger than those in her university class.
Mari was sitting in the back of the class during her last period when she received an email and several texts, thank kwamii her phone and tablet were on silent.
She decided to open her email first.
You have been selected as one of the lucky seven applicants to study and intern at Stark Industries for two weeks this summer. Below is the date, location, and mentor you will report to. We hope to meet you then. -Sincerely Co-CEO Virginia Potts
She would have answered her text had the projector not began to glitch and calling her name. "Mari bug answer your phone!"
'Ugh' she sighed running her hands down her face. "I would have Uncle T if you hadn't started yelling from the projector!"
"But Peps just told me and..."
"Wait," her head snapped up. "How many screens are you projecting on." She started to look around, her uncle, who never not used the camera unless... Then she saw the Iron Man suit.
"I dunno maybe the whole school, the city, the country I don't know."
"Ya I'm not dealing with this at least not here." She walked down the stairs her bag packed hung from her shoulders. "Oh and Uncle T, fe...male 4 o'clock." He began to sputter but she didn’t stay in the classroom and walked out without looking back.
Thank kwamii that her uncle was only projected in her class. It did have the unfortunate side effect of her class sending confused and curious looks at her. Even Lila seemed to stop her tirade for a while. But all good things must come to an end.
"Alright do I have all the permission slips for the summer graduation trip." Miss Bustier started counting the slips. “Marinette your permission slip is missing."
"I'm aware."
"If you want to go you need it in by the end of the day."
"Seriously Mari, if you want us to beg you to come save it. We don't want a bully on this trip wit us." Alya huffed before Marinette could speak.
"One only my friends call me Mari, you are not one of them so it's Marinette to you Cesaire. Two you save it I don't want to hear any of you beg me for anything. Finally three, I already had plans for this summer. So this trip I’ll be a no show so have fun."
“Y...Yes but this is a class trip,” Miss Bustier stammered.
“I understand that but it would still be a class trip even if I don’t go.” Was Marinette’s retort.
Miss Bustier would have continued had her Uncle not burst into the room. Her head was now banging against the desk. To his credit he was not in a suit, Iron Man suit included. He was in more ‘Civilian wear' with a baseball cap and shades.
"Ready to go Bug! I already signed you off."
"How mad is Auntie Pepper going to be when she finds out you came to Paris." She was now next to him at the door still in the classroom.
"Pete's here!" He shouted.
"Fine our secret." She smiled leaving the class behind without a wave or goodbye.
---
Interning with her Uncle Tony was great. Especially because she could get his input on her projects and learn from him directly.
It also helped that she stayed in Avenger's Tower and that ment leaving for akuma's was easy and was expected. Every summer she would spend with her uncle for the past five years. Meaning that they knew when she became Ladybug since it's kind of hard to keep a secret identity from FRIDAY, who is constantly monitoring the tower.
On the plus side that meant she had adult guidance and mentors.
"Mari bag mind going to pick up the Bats and Hood?”
"Suit?"
"Suit."
she left and was swinging between the sky scrapers, until she landed at the meet up point. She didn't have to wait long.
"Who are you?" Red helmet, so Red Hood, asked.
"I'm Ladybug. My guess is he just sent that bug was going to meet you guys."
"That's night how did you know?"
"There's three bugs at the tower right now Black Widow, Spider Man, and me so it's understand able, come on."
They made their way to the tower and she dropped her transformation. "If you guys want to change FRIDAY will guide you." she faced them, smiled, and walked off.
---
Something had been bothering him since he first saw the girl, Ladybug. Two days had passed and that feeling was not going away.
"Don't even think about it Bruce." Tony glared at him. "You are not adopting her she already has loving parents."
"I wasn't... why would you think that."
"We told you you have a problem B!" Jason yelled from across the room. "So what is your name anyway everyone just calls you either Maribug, Buginette, or just bug."
"Those all sound more like nicknames," Bruce now added having made his way across the room with Tony.
"That's because they are," she gave them a bored and a 'duh' look. "My name is Marinette Dupain-Cheng."
A memory flashed in his mind from 16 years ago.
"You wouldn't happen to know a Sabine Cheng?" Bruce asked.
Now both Marinette and Tony turned on him and the glare Marinette was giving him. Well he would recognize it anywhere, he trademarked it after all.
"Why would you ask that?" Tony was the first to answer, but not soon after Marinette spoke.
"Yes. She's my mother." Then she looked at him as if she were analyzing him. "Oh fuck" she groaned.
"Language!"
"Oh not now or kwamii help me I will beat you to a pulp later during sparing Uncle Steve."
"I'll bring the popcorn." Natasha piped.
“You’re not helping.” Steve argued.
“We both know she can take you. She added as they left the room.
"Mari Sweetie, what's up."
"Eyes, hair, build, complexion"
"Glare," he added.
"Not helping but yes. Ya know apparently being a hero is genetic," She had began to laugh.
"No don't tell me, that my sweet smart niece is related to..." Tony Just motioned at him not finding the right words.
"Ya well it looks that way uncle Tony."
"B. Demon spawn is not going to be happy." Jason scolded once he seemed to grasp the concept. "Hey at least you have a kid who already knows your a vigilante and a hero to boot.” Jason grinned.
Of all the ways Mari had thought she would meet her biological father, this was not one of them. Who would have thought interning with her uncle would lead to meeting her father. This is by far better than a class trip with those sheep she calls classmates.
Title: The Jason Project
Summary: Jason had just wanted to see his autopsy report, he had only wanted to know what information Bruce had about his death. And when Bruce hadn't given it to him, he had stolen it. He hadn’t meant to stumble upon the bucket list of a dead child and the footage of a grieving father crossing one item after another off the list.
AN: Because I stayed up until 2am and then had to spend the entire day writing the best Jason & Bruce angst I’ll write this year. Yes, I wrote nearly 5.000 words in one day. Warnings for Bruce’s suicidal tendencies after Jason’s death.
The anger was still burning in Jason’s stomach when he was already halfway across the city, far away from the manor and Bruce’s self-righteous, arrogant, condescending fuck-all damning attitude. Green had taken over his vision, and Jason had only started to get back some resemblance of conscious control when Crime Alley had greeted him. He wasn’t clear on what exactly he had said to Bruce once the screaming had started, but Jason also didn’t care. None of his so-called-siblings ever stood up to Bruce’s authority, but Jason wasn’t like them. He didn’t just back down and roll over like a good little soldier when Daddy said ‘no.’
Fuck them.
And fuck Bruce in particular.
Jason had been playing by the rules for months now. He hadn’t killed, hadn’t used excessive force – he hadn’t even antagonized the other kids. And for what? Only to be denied over and over again.
No, Jason, you’re not taking that patrol route. No, you can’t work on that case. No, don’t take your guns. No, you can’t look at the files I collected of your death.
No, I don’t fucking trust you with anything, no matter how hard you try.
The USB drive in his pocket was just another proof that Jason would always be the black sheep – no, he wasn’t even the black sheep. That was probably Steph. In Bruce’s mind, Jason was the wolf in sheep’s clothing, just another threat, a ticking time bomb, for this city.
After all, he was the only one who hadn’t been granted access to the files Bruce had on him. Dick could take a look at what Bruce thought of his golden boy, the Replacement could and even the Demon brat were allowed to see the bi-monthly – or even more often? It wasn’t like Jason had access and could see them – evaluations Bruce wrote on each of them.
The best part of this whole affair was that Jason hadn’t even wanted to see those. He didn’t need a physical reminder of how much of a disappointment he was in Bruce’s eyes.
He had only wanted to see his own autopsy report because Jason needed to know. Talia hadn’t been able to tell him which scars were the Joker’s fault, which ones Jason had earned in his time as Robin and which ones he had already had when Bruce had adopted him.
Jason couldn’t recall those memories himself. Or rather, he couldn’t trust those memories. Often enough Willis Todd’s face morphed into the laughing grimace of the Joker beating down on him again and again, and Jason just wanted to know so his head could stop spinning and his body would start feeling like his own once more.
He got uncomfortable in his body sometimes. Bruce probably had notes on that too. Had seen Jason twitch one too many times too often and written down PTSD, anxiety, dysphoria and a whole lot of other diagnoses.
Fuck him, Jason thought again when he finally arrived at his safe house. Jason had wanted to see only one thing, but now he had gotten every file, every single thought and he’d throw them all in Bruce’s face the next time he saw him. He’d do it right in front of the others too. Who knew, maybe Replacement had some unmentioned thoughts about being replaced himself?
Jason locked the door behind himself and activated his security system. The last thing he needed was anyone barging in when he was in the middle of another existential crisis. The safe house he had chosen to hide away in was his most secure one. State of the art defense and comfortable on the inside, prepped to keep someone on death’s door alive for ages.
Carefully, Jason took the USB out of his pocket and laid it on the table. Then he got out of his uniform and headed for the shower. The water was almost scalding, but Jason preferred it this way. There were days on which temperatures meant nothing to him. He could walk out in shorts in the middle of winter or be wearing four layers in summer. He just didn’t feel the difference. Today wasn’t one of these days, but it was close enough.
When he was done, he got dressed in sweat pants and a hoodie. Soft, warm, and kind on his aching bones.
He skipped dinner.
He hadn’t prepared anything because he’d thought he would be eating at the manor tonight and he was too lazy and too nervous to make himself something now. He was sure he wouldn’t be able to stomach it either.
All that was left to do now was put the damn stick into his laptop.
The USB was cold in his hand, freezing really, and Jason had to force his hand to stay steady. The laptop screen lit up and the files loaded. He hadn’t really expected this many GB to be on him, but Bruce had never been anything but thoroughly.
Jason Peter Todd, the first line read. His birth record was in there, the old one and the original one. His adoption papers, ID and passport and a bunch of other things. Jason wanted to get to the file he was actually here for first. The rest he could still read later on. He had all the time in the world now.
Or at least a week until Alfred talked some sense into Bruce.
Robin, skipped, school reports, skipped, vacation – what the hell was that doing here, skipped.
Ethiopia.
The cursor hovered above the file and Jason wanted to open it, he really did, but then the name of the folder below that caught his interest.
The Jason Project.
What the hell was that?
A 30 step plan to rehabilitate him and make him a good Robin again?
Jason scoffed. He double-clicked on the Ethiopia file. The documents in it were sorted by date, very neatly and labeled to the heavens.
Autopsy report. April 28th. 2am.
It was just one click away. He’d finally know if Bruce had been able to tell how often the Joker had taken the crowbar to Jason’s head, how much it had hurt, how much he had hoped that his Dad would come and save him like he had all the times before?
Jason returned to the overview and opened the file beneath Ethiopia.
He was such a fucking coward. He finally had what he’d wanted to see, and then he couldn’t open it because his heart sped up and his breathing got a little uneven like it always did right before Jason fell into a panic attack?
Well, it had been almost three full weeks since his last one. It was time for a new one.
“Shit,” Jason cursed and closed his eyes.
He could see the flames dancing in front of him, hear that deranged laughter, high pitched and mad.
Okay, alright. He got this.
All the time in the world left for him.
He’d just start with something else first. Losing a few laughs about Bruce’s dumb rehabilitation plan was a good, no, a great idea. He could write one for Bruce right after and mail it to every member of their little family. It was petty, yes, but Jason could do a lot worse, and it was only because this city needed a functioning Batman that he didn’t.
Thus he opened The Jason Project and clicked on the first document. He expected something like a diagram measuring the Red Hood’s aggression to the number of times he messed up, but instead, he came face to face with a video of Bruce.
He looked so young and exhausted.
Bruce looking tired was nothing new, it was sort of his permanent state of mind, though Jason thought he used to be less dead on his feet before Jason had died.
Bruce’s age, however, caught Jason off guard. This video was at least what? Five years old? Maybe even a little more. What was this? Against his better judgment, Jason hit play.
X
“I don’t know what I’m doing,” Bruce said. “It was fine. Everything was fine, and then your English teacher called about a project you handed in before- and I just- I don’t know. I don’t even recall what happened after, except hours had passed and I can’t recall a fucking thing-“
X
Jason hit stop. This wasn’t what he had expected. The Bruce on the screen looked like he was going to cry and Jason didn’t have any memories of Bruce ever actually crying in front of him. Though this wasn’t in front of him at all, was it?
So Bruce had recorded himself talking to Jason. Maybe. Was this a video diary? Jason looked over the other files and no, they seemed to be pretty mixed from writing to photos and audios.
He bit his lip until he could taste blood. Should he keep watching?
Hell, why shouldn’t he? These files were in Jason’s folder, he damn straight deserved to watch them.
He clicked on play again and started watching.
X
“Your project was supposed to be about things you looked forward to doing in summer. And you wrote about The List. Our list. All the things you wanted to do someday because I’m ‘stupidly rich and stupidly rich people spoil their children.’“ Bruce swallowed. “I forgot about the list. It was still there where you left it. Pinned against the corkboard above your desk.”
Bruce took a piece of paper out of his pockets.
X
Jason remembered writing that list. It had been days before his first birthday at the manor and he hadn’t expected anything whatsoever. But then Bruce had asked what Jason wanted and he had written a list of the dumbest rich kids gifts he could think of and handed it to Bruce.
And Bruce had taken it seriously. He had seen nothing wrong with taking Jason on vacation to the freaking Caribbean for two weeks. His only concern had been getting someone competent enough to cover his night shifts, and Kate and Babs had gladly volunteered.
It had been the two best weeks of Jason’s life.
On Jason’s birthday, midnight, they had sat on the beach and talked about all the things they really should do someday and as soon as Jason had come home, he had sat down and written it all down.
That had been the birth of The List. And every once in a while Jason and Bruce had picked something from the list and done it.
Those had been the good times. Jason could feel the dread rise in his stomach, but he refused to stop the video. He had decided that he’d go through all of this tonight and he would.
X
“I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I told Dinah and she said it might help me to do something with it. So I will. I’ll do everything on this list, all the things you wanted to see and- I’ll tell you all about. When the time comes-“
X
When.
When as if it was something sure, something soon, something planned-
X
“-I’ll tell you all about the things you wanted to do so you won’t feel like you missed out. I’m so sorry, Jaylad. I’m sorry, my son. I should have been there. I should have been there for you-“
X
The video cut off.
Jason was frozen in his seat. Something wet rolled over his cheeks and he immediately reached up to wipe the tear away. This wasn’t fair. He hadn’t thought about this, about all the things he had missed out when he was dead and later on when he’d been training.
He hadn’t spent a second thinking about catching up with the rest of the world.
Jason stared at the receipt, unsure what to think of it. He remembered that cat café. He and Bruce had passed it as Batman and Robin on patrol one night after chasing after Catwoman. Jason had joked about going there with Selina someday instead of running after her when it was freezing and raining. Bruce had rolled his eyes at him and said something about going there just with Jason as well, and no begging about taking a cat home.
So was this Bruce collecting proof he’d actually gone out and done something from the List? The rest of these documents would be full with little things like this. Jason’s missed opportunities, Jason’s lost childhood.
He needed something strong if he wanted to make it through the rest of these. Why didn’t he have any drinkable alcohol in this safe house? Or cigarettes. Anything to make this easier.
He continued on, this time greeted by an audio file.
X
“I’m in Hollywood and let me tell you, it’s not as shiny or impressive as everyone makes it out to be. And the food isn’t even nearly as good as Alfred’s. I think the salmon they served at the buffet was closer to its due date than it should be. And the biscuits are super dry. You would have hated it. But breakfast in Hollywood can be crossed off the list I guess.”
X
A postcard from Disneyland, accompanied by a photo of Bruce in Mickey Mouse ears.
X
Another photo of a couple fries and burgers with Gotham harbor in the background.
X
“Do you- do you remember that documentary about the most spectacular libraries? I’d injured my leg and we didn’t go on patrol, but I couldn’t fall asleep so you sat with me. We turned on the TV and they were talking about all these libraries. Your eyes were shining, you looked so stunned like you didn’t believe the manor’s library could be bested still. And then they started talking about the Biblioteca Joanina in Portugal and you- you started jumping up and down on the sofa when they said that bats lived in the library. You wanted to rush down to the Cave and collect some bats for the manor. And- it’s so pretty, Jason. It’s so beautiful and you would have loved it. I can almost see you here right next to me and god- why didn’t I take you here? Why didn’t I take off a week and just took you here?”
X
A postcard from Kyoto and a photo of Bruce dressed in a yukata. Next to him stood Katana, holding an umbrella over them both.
X
Another photo, this one of Bruce dressed as Superman standing in front of a building Jason recognized as one of the orphanages funded by the Wayne foundation. And next to him was Clark Kent in a Batman costume. Jason couldn’t believe he was seeing that correctly. They both seemed to be handing out candy to children.
“It’s Halloween,” the audio file repeated. It was Clark speaking. “He’s doing better, but I wasn’t sure whether going out with children was a good idea, especially since what happened with the-“Clark stopped speaking, and Jason could hear him struggling to find the right words. “What happened. I thought Bruce was going to quit the League after I stopped him, but he hasn’t. Diana and Hal are keeping track of Arkham right now and I’m checking in on Bruce. I don’t know- I don’t know how you usually do these recordings, Bruce. Or if you’ll ever listen to this one here. But we’re here for you.”
X
The next video was of a room Jason would recognize everywhere: the halls of the Globe Theatre. He had begged Alfred and Bruce to take him there when they’d been in London for a weekend once, but they hadn’t had the time.
The room was packed full and the play seemed to only just begin.
“Thank you for coming tonight, Ladies and Gentlemen! This performance is sponsored by an anonymous donator, who only asked us to perform in honor of one Jason Todd…”
X
Jason pushed the laptop off his legs and stumbled into the kitchen. He needed air. He grabbed a water bottle from the fridge and marched into the direction of the balcony when he stumbled over his discard uniform.
In his attempt to catch his balance, he dropped the glass bottle, which broke as soon as it hit the ground.
“Damn it,” Jason cursed and took a step back only to hiss and jump up.
Blood dripped to the ground.
“Shit, shit, shit.”
Jason maneuvered himself away from the glass shards and hobbled to his first aid station. He took out alcohol and bandages and began cleaning the cut on his foot. First, he pulled out all the shards, then he used the alcohol to disinfect the wound. It wouldn’t stop throbbing even after Jason had bandaged it. He took one look at the mess he had made and decided he could clean up another time. Silently counting to ten, Jason leaned back and closed his eyes.
The boy who had died in that warehouse would have loved to know that this was how he had been remembered.
Jason didn’t want to be that child.
He mourned him anyway.
X
Another video, this time no Bruce in sight but a lot of injured animals. Wildlife rehabilitation center could be read on one of the signs in the recording.
X
The sound of classic instruments playing various movie themes. Harry Potter, Titanic, Star Wars – Jason recognized most of them.
X
A stack of DVDs.
X
The camera was focused on Bruce and his desk. A stack of documents was waiting to be signed on the right. A colorful collection of pens and pencils in an ugly handmade ceramic mug. A photo in an overly fancy frame of Bruce, Barbara, Dick and Jason sitting at the living room table playing Monopoly.
“You always complained about the fact that we don’t take photos in uniform, so I collected some. Or rather, picked them up from someone who collected them.”
Bruce smiled a little pained. Then he held up a photo album, pages upon pages filled with photos of Batman and Jason’s Robin. Some of them were blurry, others stunningly clear and pretty.
“Did you ever notice a kid following us, Jay? I didn’t. I didn’t notice a child following us into Gotham’s darkest parts. He could have gotten hurt, and I wouldn’t even have known. His name is Tim by the way. He’s the exact sort of boy you would have befriended instantly. Smart kid, figured out our identities years ago from a simple flip. And- hell, you’d hate his parents. Jack and Janet Drake, our neighbors actually. They leave Tim alone for most of the year, they weren’t even there for his birthday. They have a kid waiting on them, and they don’t appreciate it one bit. I’m sure you’d have a couple more words to say about them that Alfred wouldn’t approve of. Anyway. Do you know you’re his hero? Yesterday- Tim saved me yesterday. I was going to die. I was almost okay with that as well. You’d be so disappointed in me, but I’m so tired, son. Tim took one of your old uniforms and saved me. He did well given that he doesn’t have training. He said Batman needs a Robin and maybe- maybe he is right. But what if I- what if he dies? I can’t let another child die, and this one isn’t even mine. I wish he were, but- Just, please promise me you’re watching over him, Jay. He loves you, and he needs someone and I don’t know if I can be that person.”
X
“This one wasn’t on the list.” The video was shaky. People could be heard and seen rushing around Bruce, most of them speaking Italian. “But I saw them on my way to the meeting and there was this boy- I could have sworn he was you, Jason. He was wearing a hoodie, just as red as your favorite and his hair was black too, if a little longer than you kept yours. Only his eyes were green. I can’t even tell you how glad I am that his eyes were green, because for a moment I thought the new pain killers were also interfering with my other meds. But the point is, I saw these and thought you’d like them.”
The camera moved to show a couple Venetian masks lying on the table. One was black and reminiscent of Batman’s cowl and besides it laid a smaller green one decorated with fake and cheap gemstones. Another mask was shaped like a W, then there was a blue, red and yellow one.
“Justice League masks,” Bruce said. “They are cheap and look ridiculous, but you would have loved them. I think I’ll keep them as a New Years gift for the League.”
X
Jason was woken up by the sound of his doorbell ringing. He had made it through all the documents, fifty they must have been. It had taken all night and Jason felt hollow. Those things had been for a boy that would never get to see them and Jason was painfully aware that they hadn’t been meant for him.
Nevertheless, he had to choke down those feelings for now and deal with whoever had decided to disturb him.
He managed to make his way over to the display screens showing who stood in his entrance without too much hissing. He was ready to shout at whoever wanted something from him to go away, only for the words to get stuck in his throat when he realized who was standing there.
Bruce.
Civilian clothes and all.
Oh no.
No, no, no, nonono.
Jason couldn’t deal with that now. He didn’t want to stare into the eyes of the man he’d seen cry. He couldn’t. Not now.
The doorbell rang again.
And again and again and Jason couldn’t move.
He didn’t know how much time had passed when Bruce’s shoulders sank in defeat and he turned around. He was leaving.
He was leaving Jason behind once more.
Suddenly, it seemed like Jason couldn’t get to the door fast enough. His foot screamed in protest when Jason rushed forward and threw the door open.
Bruce turned around and stared at Jason with wide blue eyes, and Jason didn’t know what to say.
“I still haven’t seen Romeo + Juliet,” Jason blurted out the first thing that came to his mind.
Bruce stared at him like he couldn’t understand what was going on in Jason’s head, which was fair because Jason had no idea either, so he just kept on rambling.
“The Leonardo di Caprio movie. We only ever watched these super old black and white Shakespeare movies, but I think we should give this one a shot, right?”
Bruce was still staring and it freaked Jason out. Bruce knew. Of course he knew that Jason had stolen all the files and watched them and bawled like a baby because even death couldn’t teach him that the world was a vicious monster that enjoyed breaking people into pieces until they didn’t know who they used to be.
“Jason-“
“I saw the stupid files,” Jason interrupted him. Better to get this out of the way now before they started shouting again. “The videos about the List and all the things you did, and it’s not fair that I didn’t get to do any of that and that these were the end of me. I- I don’t know. I’m tired, Bruce. I’m really tired of you not listening to me and that everything has to be a fight. We used to be better than this.”
Silence followed Jason’s statement and for a moment he thought he’d finally done it and ruined everything. Not the killing, not the disobedience, this talk would be what finally crossed the line. Jason could see it in Bruce’s face.
“I know,” Bruce replied slowly. “I know and I’m sorry, Jaylad.”
Jason’s brain short-circuited. What?
Bruce didn’t notice Jason zoning out, still stuck on that first sentence and kept talking.
“But I can’t shake off the feeling that every time I take my eyes off you, you’re going to disappear again. Back to Crime Alley or to another country or just somewhere I can’t reach you. So tell me what to do, Jay, because I don’t know.”
This used to be easy. He’d been able to ask everything and get a reply. He hadn’t had to worry about what topics they talked about or what he demanded. Sometimes he hadn’t even needed to voice it. Bruce had already known.
“You could start with trusting me for once,” Jason said. “That’s all I ever wanted. Just getting the same amount of trust as Dick. Nothing more, nothing less.”
Silence followed in which they both mustered the other. Bruce looked older than he was, more exhausted than yesterday as well and he was wearing comfortable clothes, those he only put on at home or if he didn’t want to be recognized outside.
Bruce’s eyes darted away from Jason, taking in the sight behind him. It wasn’t a pretty one. Jason had fallen asleep without cleaning up.
“Are you injured?” Bruce asked.
That must have been the most unsubtle topic change of history.
“There’s glass and blood on the ground,” Bruce continued, diving head-first into detective mode.
Jason took a deep breath and bit on his tongue so that he wouldn’t go right back to where they had started.
“Already bandaged.”
“Oh, okay then.”
Bruce’s words made Jason’s sight flash green for a split-second.
“What? No more inquiries? No interrogation about what I was doing?”
Bruce hesitated, then shook his head. “No, I- I’m supposed to trust you on that.”
Jason could nearly hear the unspoken question mark tagged onto the end of that sentence. This was bound to be the worst conversation on the planet.
“Great. Thanks. So, if that was everything, can you-“
Jason didn’t get to finish as two arms suddenly wrapped around Jason. His first reaction was to fight and get out of that grip, until he realized that it was supposed to be a hug. Alright. Okay. They were hugging now.
“This isn’t going to fix us,” Jason mumbled into the crook of Bruce’s neck.
He didn’t know what hugging Bruce was like. It used to be like holding onto a mountain, or a big tree trunk. Nothing could move Bruce and Jason used to be so small, he had been able to climb on top of him and get carried around the whole house.
He wasn’t that child anymore. That child had died years ago.
“I know,” Bruce said. “But can we stay like this a little longer regardless?”
Jason’s foot hurt from standing so long already, but he didn’t mind. This way he had a little more time to hide his tear track, even though Bruce must be able to tell he was crying from the shaking of his shoulder and the wet spot on his jacket.
Just a bit longer.
I hope you’re doing amazing despite the Coronavirus and the social distancing that’s taken over all of our lives. I know it sucks, but I hope you are safe and healthy.
On the bright side, there were a LOT of opportunities to hear Celtic music over the past couple o’weeks despite St Patrick’s Day being effectively closed. And I keep hearing about more musicians going live. So make sure you check the news of your favorite bands. See who’s playing and watch one of their shows.
And if you’re able, help them out. Buy some music or merch, send them a tip. Tell them thanks for all of the music they create.
THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!
CELTIC PODCAST NEWS
We’re getting closer to 1000 ratings on Apple Podcasts. Yeah. I said ratings. Looks like I messed up when I said reviews. But that’s still brilliant. Just 17 left. Go give your review.
A quick additional note about St Patrick’s Day. I know it sucked that it was effectively shut down. I think we need to make Halfway to St Patrick’s Day as big St Paddy’s Day should’ve been this year. So go talk to your local pub or Celtic organizations. We have just over 5 months to plan. Let’s make it happen on September 17th!
Oh! And I want send out a huge thanks to Lady Susan of Thunder on the Plains. She organized an impromptu St Patrick’s Day virtual festival on Facebook and Instagram. Some of these concerts are still available to watch online.
