you and finney were best friends, it was common knowledge at this point. you hung out at almost all hours of the day and one was never seen without the other. with the few years you've been friends, finn might've caught feelings. he honestly couldn't help it, you were so kind and sweet it was almost too much sometimes. you always helped him with subjects he didn't understand well, you comforted both him AND gwen after fights with their dad, and you even patched him up after he got beat up again and again by moose and his friends.

you helped him gain confidence for things he wanted to do but was too scared and nervous to try, like for example you convinced him to sign up for baseball and you even helped him pick out a bat and glove. you were a nice addition to his life in a small town, he's been here his whole life, nothing new or interesting ever came, until you moved next door. you caught him staring at the moving truck and waved before walking back in, presumably to unpack your things. ever since you've been hanging every weekend, which turned into everyday.

basically, finn likes you a lot, you've helped him so much and he just wants to be with you, all the time.

you were on your way out of school and waited for finney outside the building. you waved to the people watching passed, a few girls giggling as you waved at them which caused you to chuckle nervously back. as the day passed finney didn't show up, not really thinking much about it you began walking home. as you rounded a fence you noticed finney getting chased by three bullies. you recognized them and ran after them.

the three dudes standing over finney eventually ran off noticing you speed-walking towards them. sitting down to finn's level, you looked at the bruises and small scrapes he got, probably from tripping.

"finney are you okay?" you asked, sitting right next to him.

he shook his head as he buried himself into his knees, shielding his head with his arms. you held his left arm and clasped his hand within yours. without thinking much you absentmindedly held his hand towards your cheek. he raised his head from his solemn pose and his arm went limp as you looked around for something more interesting to gaze upon. this gesture obviously didn't mean much to you, but it meant everything for him.

while lingering on the thought on his way home, his mind was interrupted by gwen running up behind him.

"hey! you didn't see me walking up to you?" she scoffed, now walking next to finney.

"no, i didn't, i was thinking of, stuff, y'know?"

"stuff? oh—, i know who it is."

"what? what do you mean?"

"it's (y/n) isn't it." she said in an "as a matter of fact" manner. "ooo, (y/n) yes i'll carry those books for you, i'll even jump off a cliff for you!" she teased finney, based on the fact that when you visited their home she found finney carrying your bag despite you saying he didn't have to.

"don't be too loud! what if he's around?" finney states nervously, looking around.

"finney please, he's not going to just jump out of anywhere, besides he wouldn't notice if you had a crush on him unless you confessed directly."

"i guess, but i don't know, let's just get inside."

"no, i'm going to susie's today, only for a little bit though, i'll see you later finney!"

"alright."

hours passed and it was now time for finney's baseball game. he felt extra nervous this time because he was going against bruce. now, before he realized he had a crush on you, he thought bruce was extremely attractive and now that he thinks about it, bruce was way out of his league. but the reason he was so nervous is that you were here, and so was bruce, which means you'll see bruce as well. finney doesn't think he'll be able to handle you having a crush on someone.

trying to ignore the disgusting anxiety he felt in his chest, he continued to play. he was doing pretty good until bruce hit a home run and the last ball he pitched. it was inevitable but he still felt like throwing his stomach on the floor and running away. he dejectedly walked outside the field and almost screamed when you hugged him from behind congratulating him on playing.

"finney!! you did so good!" you held him in your arms, putting your chin on his shoulder.

"oh, thanks (y/n)." he said, attempting to sound as happy as possible despite him losing.

"are you mad you lost? it's not a big deal, besides it's bruce he plays really good." you giggled, letting go of finney, now face to face with him.

"hey! you!" speaking of bruce; finn thought as he approached the two of you.

"man, your arm is mint. you almost had me there haha!" he said, slightly out of breath.

"oh yeah, thanks, you were good as well, because you know, you won."

"and, you're (y/n) right? i think we have the same science period." he recalled, now facing you instead of finney. finney was already annoyed about losing in front of you but now bruce is trying to—i don't know? ask you out? he doesn't really know but he knew he was jealous about it.

"mhm, you sit a few seats in front of me i think." you said before looking down to your hand to see finney holding it. you laughed to yourself and ended your conversation with bruce.

you and finney sat down upon the sidewalk in front of your house, not speaking, no one saying a thing. as you were staring at the ground, he was staring at you, deep in thought. while he was staring into space, his head was crowded. he liked you; a lot, he began to realize. he’s never liked someone so much before, i mean, there was donna who he had a crush on for a while, but while with her there was this thought in the back of his head; the thought being you, to do things with you. then there was bruce, however he’s pretty sure that was just admiration.

“finney? what’s with you lately? are you good?” you asked, fed up, but also concerned because of his behavior.

“i, i don’t know, i’m fine.”

“no, you’re not, now tell me what the hell’s the matter with you.”

:i, um.” now or never finney, “i like you, a lot. your hair, smile, personality, the way you help me when i don’t deserve it, the fact that you’ve never judged me, when you comfort gwen, when you comfort ME. i just, really like you.” his tone of voice contradicting his feelings.

“was—is that it?” you looked agape.

“um, i guess, yeah.”

“i like you too. i just didn’t know if you liked me back.” you laughed at the end of your sentence.

finney chuckled, “so, are we like, dating? i don’t really know how this works.”

you laughed at his dorky expression and leaned in to kiss him.

“I guess we are.”
