*Flicks her finger as her powers ignite.* Time to talk about Hibana, our resident flame flower slightly sadist in chief of the Science infused Special Fire Force Company 5. Ah yes, the infamous Princess of Company 5 and one of the more interesting characters to come out of series. Before I begin let’s point point out the obvious tropes, she’s a tan large breasted character with obvious se appeal. We have a few of these in anime, and it’s a thing. Okay done!
Hibana is my favorite character other than Maki and it has nothing to do with her bodacious good looks. She’s a character who like everyone else has experience the trauma of Human Fucking Combustion. Hiban is basically Iris’ adopted bi sister and she’s definitely hidden her own pain through a pretty fucked abuse of others. This is beyond inexcusable, but she does seem to slowly grow as a character after Iris speaks with her.
Now, her powers alone are just -cool-, and I could probably wax and wane for hours on it. But let’s just do it anyway! She creates fucking flame flowers! I mean, let’s just ignore the entirety of how you can make FLAME FLOWERS. Then her main power is a giant tree that releases burning fucking petals. Gods, she’s like a less pretentious Deidara! (Yes I mean this, fuck Deidara from Shippuden, and his fucking stupid need to do “art” murder). Plus the fact that she walks around with a fan she uses in combat is pretty great.
One of things that makes Firce Force so good is its a series about trauma and reclaiming your life. Some people do this by being complete assholes and believing an something which might be the devil (yes fucking those White-Clad assholes). Or, they work through it and start growing as people. What is also known as Characterization. This show is pretty fucking great at it and I hope it continues.

At the Special Firce Force Company 8′s headquarters.
Shinra: “Captain Hibana, can I return to my duties?”
Captain Hibana: “Just one hour more.”
Shinra: “Your thighs are comfortable, but I have paperwork to do.”
Captain Hibana: “I said one hour more!”

Warning SPOILERS AHEAD for Fire Force!
The flame is the soul’s breath…The black smoke is the soul’s release…Ashes as ashes…May thy soul…Return to the Great Flame!”
“ Látom.”
Sister Irish of the Holy Sol Temple
When I first watched the trailer for “Fire Force” I was completely unsure what to really make of it. I mean it was flashy and the animation looked fun, but it really seemed like another ridiculous anime concept. It’s like ecchi or pretty  bishounen or bishoujo, all dem bishis are just part of the pretty main character element of anime. So as I started to watch the series and I was slowly taking in the plot it was the prayer above from Sister iris which caught my attention.
Sister Iris like all members of the Special Fire Force Company 8 has a deep reason for why she wants to deal with the Infernal problem. Growinng up as an orphan in an convent alongside her childhood friend, Hibana. The two have an awkward sisterly relationship with Hibana often using her powers as a child to entertain Iris and the other sisters. After their all of their sisters were turned into Infernals by a member of the White-Clad. This inetiveable influenced both of them to eventually joining the different Special Firce Force Companies.
Iris until a later revelation of her status, is not a powered individual with any form of pyrokinetic ability. Her power is mostly in her ability to cheer people and get beyond the shields thye’ve created for themselves. When Company 8 invades the sanctum of Company 5 its Iris and Shinra who finally get Hibana on their side. And even up against a fairly unstable White-Clad fighter it’s her own hard clang that finishes it.
Sister Iris is a moral compass, but also the cute girl nerdy girl in the group that acts as a bit of joy. Her ability to bring calm and honest closure for her own team is perhaps her greatest strength. Imagine being someone whose task is to end the pain and suffering of another who violently has the power to control flame. The very existence of Infernals and the loss caused by them is so great the Empire of Tokyo has a bunch of fire Paladins running around doing their best to put them to rest.
To me as I like to do in these thought dumps Iris offers a lot of potential for different AU avenues. She could easily be the long lost sister of Hibana who has finally made a name for herself as an artist, a producer or more. The loving girl whose life in the convent has narrowed her world view of the world around her.
But that’s all I have to say for now.
