Introducing the Smartphone

Smartphones have transformed people’s lives in today’s society by allowing communication and education at our fingertips. I got my first phone in the sixth grade, it was purple, sparkly, had flowers on it, and slid to access a keyboard. Ever since then have used phones to communicate with people through messages, social media, and even games. I remember making a snapchat for the first time, and using all of the silly filters with my friends and family! I chose to use phones as my cultural and social object because I have seen how it has aided me and the people in my life from it growing up in our hands. My phone continues to be special to me because while I am over 800 miles away from my home in Houston, Texas, and I use my phone everyday to text my mom about school, to tell my grandparents I miss them, and to text my best friend pretty much everything I do. By using my phone, I am able to keep connections due to having this easy access to communications. Furthermore, I use my phone often to get assistance or even answers. In the mornings I check the weather without having to go outside, and then during class I am able to quickly look up the definitions of words I do not understand during lectures. From when I was eight, looking up how to do nail designs, to now finding a mathematical formula I forgot for my calculus homework, my phone is always there. Overall, I can always rely on my phone to make a fast call, or look up what book I have a quote from. Phones are extremely beneficial to society, and my goal is to show my audience this- how smartphones have aided in the communication and education in people’s lives.

Found this ancient thing while pottering around at Dad's house. This was my first ever phone, a hand-me down from my older brother that I got, I think, in 2004 when I was in Year 12 and used it up until 2007-8. It wasn't fancy but it got the job done. It could receive pics and videos, couldn't take them though, had no camera. It had a inbuilt radio. It could store some songs. The #firstphonevscurrentphone is quite famous hashtag right now, but i think rather than comparing my first phone with my current phone, i will show the evolution of my phone. My first cell phone is Nokia 1110 which my parents gave me when i was in 5th grade and my current phone is Vivo S1 Pro which not in the picture because the picture is dedicated to my former phone. The Xiaomi Mi Max in the picture to be honest is still in use but since it’s already replaced by the Vivo, so it’s joint my other former phone, but nevertheless it’s the longest running phone i ever use. Here is the timeline of my phone

Nokia 1110 : 2009-2011

Nokia N-70 : 2011-2012

HTC One-V : 2012-2013

Samsung Galaxy Tab : 2013-2015

LG Optimus L7II : 2015-2016

Xiaomi Mi Max : 2016-2020 (still in use but no longer my main phone)

Vivo S1 Pro : 2020-present

Challenge questions suck

You know that thing that companies do when you set up an online account, asking you to name your favorite food and your high-school mascot as a way to recover your password later, or verify your identity if something sus is going on?

They're called "challenge questions" and they don't work.

That's the conclusion a group of Google security researchers and my EFF colleague Joseph Bonneau reached through a set of careful - and devastating - experiments.

Not only are the answers to these questions pretty easy for attackers to guess or research (your mother's maiden name is a matter of public record and your favorite food is "pizza"), but actual users really struggle to remember their answers.

Topline findings:

* "37% admitted to providing fake answers in an attempt to make them 'harder to guess' although on aggregate this behavior had the opposite effect"

* "40% of users were unable to recall their answers when needed."

* "Questions that are potentially the most secure (e.g what is your firstphone number) are also the ones with the worst memorability."

* "It appears next to impossible to find secret questions that are both secure and memorable."

I treat these questions as secondary passwords and use password generators to come up with strong, long passwords for them, managing them in a password manager (so much for memorable). Even this has an unexpected failure mode!

My small credit union's site requires you to come up with several of these questions at signup time: favorite movie, high school mascot, etc. You can answer from a list, or you can fill in our own. I did the latter, giving answers like "OWX~kMy!'(T;DkLwmBjrDs."

What I didn't know was that the challenge questions are presented as MULTIPLE CHOICE! So here's how it looks:
