Also none of these pirates are right about Stede. From Mary and Anne — he’s not a fourteen year old boy, he’s bringing all his years to bear on the courage it takes to begin again and try to do it better. His earnestness isn’t funny and them not having sex yet doesn’t make it ridiculous for them to think they know something about love. They’ve been laying the foundation and it’s right there in that earnestness. They’re not doomed for mutual boredom and mind games — they want more from each other than excitement, they want to share a life. From Ned Lowe — he’s not Ed’s pet, Ed sees him as his equal. Ed doesn’t only like him as an amateur— he’s coaching him through his captaining and proud of his success. He just wants more of a life with Stede than piracy. From Zheng — Stede is not a mediocre man who thinks he’s extraordinary. He’s an extraordinary man who’s leaning hard into the least extraordinary things about him because they’re being celebrated, loudly, and he’s awfully lonely. But he didn’t defeat Ned Lowe by dumb luck or a bad duel, he defeated him by caring about his people and getting a perfect read on his weakness — his grandiosity, his inability to read his crew’s resentment as a real threat until Stede exploited it. Stede is more than any of them know. He’s just not had a chance to find out what kind of happiness that could create for him, beyond that ship.
