ep 3 rewatch
it’s been done to death but the fact that goodsir is the one who prevents silna from getting the charms she needed is so juicy. man despite your best intentions your hands are bloody from the start eh?
also hartnell & silna is a really good interaction because like, he’s really quite kind and respectful, be puts some supper in and gives condolences for her father but it doesn’t ultimately matter. i think it’s an example of how no matter how good their intentions are or how kind they may be the crew cannot do the right thing because they just have this insurmountable epistemological barrier by virtue of having been raised to buy into empire.
now that i’ve remembered who he is it’s possible de voeux is my most hated character in this show
also throwing silna’s father down the ice hole just. so cartoonishly evil.
obsessed with how consistently miserable meals on the erebus are shown to be. obviously this one is sad for good reason because gore isn’t there but it does paint a picture of a truly soul-sucking working environment. just deeply awkward for everybody involved.
also interesting to read the body language in franklin’s flashback to his officers chatting back in london. fitzjames is halfway out of the circle but leaning in pretty much how someone slightly left out of the school friendgroup would act (foreshadowing that he’s out of his depth and overcompensates socially?) and gore is the centre of attention (tallies with the impression that gore was pretty universally popular and does suggest to me that his early death really sent things downhill on erebus morale wise).
honestly jane franklin is so interesting to me. love that she’s a bit of a lady macbeth in some ways despite next episode pointing out that she also thinks her husband is a bit of an idiot.
mandatory religious service sir john u fucking square
the fact that franklin refuses crozier’s rescue plan right after we’re shown he had no rescue plan in the first place — motivated primarily by vanity. “i will not lose another man” is not his motivation surely. hilarious that he accuses crozier of vanity because of this as well. something deeply paternalistic about the whole speech too - franklin saying he takes some (but not all!) responsibility for crozier’s shortcomings as a captain. something about how everything crozier is is because of sir john, who is retroactively taking credit for moulding his whole personality, except for his flaws which are inherent to crozier, indelible failures. ALSO actually this is completely the imperial mindset like straight up. british imperial policy in africa (in contrast to french) focused very much on like, emphasising difference between indigenous people and the british administration. they would educate “able” colonised people in the british system but they would never be british (the french response, also evil, was just to say that everyone was now french what a gift). like, the attitude of, we will make you, as much as we can, a good imperial citizen, all of your achievements will be because we gave you that opportunity, but also you will never truly be one of us because you will always be Other and therefore wrong. very franklin & crozier in that scene.
the irony of course is that, the above said, in a limited sense franklin isn’t wrong — crozier’s tendency to isolate himself is actively detrimental.
also fitzjames’ obvious eavesdropping is really funny especially considering that it was not necessary. dundy was also listening in but managed to get away but fj just sort of freezes? very secondary mean girl behaviour of him
ok interesting that blanky & crozier assume little would refuse to disobey sir john and send off the search parties. also “there’s a spare captain on erebus”, fun thirty second foreshadowing. but also good example of how crozier is like…idk his self-sacrifical tendencies are obviously ultimately completely thwarted, and also not at all the best for his ship
DIGGLE WAS THE COOK??? ok craaaazy that he ended up in cannibalism kitchen then
IRVING WATERCOLOUR SPEECH. best moment of this whole fucking show. again really interesting that hickey has initially really misread the situation and it is worse than he thought it was BUT it’s also so funny how much he is clearly enjoying playing the repentant sinner. kind of into it methinks. also “you’re in the world’s best place for it” [“repairing” yourself] and “god sees you, mr hickey. here, more than anywhere” OKAYY.
DIVORCE!!!!! <3333
“to think you were such a good wife to me, all this months” hmmmmm
RAT SPEECH okay putting a pin in this speech because i am too tired to fully go through it but there’s a lot there about like. idk general human/animal stuff, also “rats devouring each other to make more rats” kind of a thesis statement maybe?
“just ask jopson” classic messy bitch jopson
“he sees something in me” / “he doesn’t see you at all” — “a man like me will do anything to be seen” / “that is not how i see you” yet another parallel between hickey & billy and crozier & fitzjames. which could mean anything
“educate this creature as to the dominion of the empire and the will of the lord behind it” well.
honestly goodsir trying to figure out how to arrange the leg will always be famous
little & dundy honestly looking straight up suicidal about fitzjames’ excessive grief. yet another erebus awkward workplace moment.

What’s this?? A pre-order???
Crack open a couple of cold boys and let them warm up by holding hands!!
This is a pre-order listing (ON MY BRAND NEW SHOP BTW GO LOOK AT IT) for Crozier and Fitzjames keychains from the Terror!
I have plans to do more of the crew later on, so please feel free to drop character recommendations for me! For now, though, it’s just these little guys. I’m going to run this for a month, so you have until March 10th to get your orders in!
They come with one magnetic half-heart attached, which is unclippable if you’d rather replace it with a charm of your own. They have hooks on both hands, so you can either attach more heart pieces, or other charms, whatever you like! The idea is that when I have more of the crew, you’ll be able to arrange them in whatever configuration you like, any combination, as many people together as you please.
They’re at a discounted price for the pre-order, so now’s a great time to snag them, and it helps me to gauge interest in more of these guys for the future!
You can find them right here:

i think the ultimate appeal of jopkey to me is the comedic potential. bc, yes, true, i love the whole mindgame jealousy dynamic and i am obsessed w the class (traitor) dynamic (cf. the whole reaction of hickey to jopsons promotion when he becomes one of Them when before he was one of Us & also the "everything we ate growing up started w a gun mr hickey" vs "i bet ur mum needed to use all parts of the meat" convos) but, really, the highest form of their dynamic is just
guy who thinks hes so smart and special and competent and good at their job but actually fucks up constantly bc hes too busy thinking abt that old man that he neglects crucial parts of his actual tasks x other guy who is exactly the same. and they both think the other is a total hack, but they themself are, obviously, actually good at what they do.
oldmanfucker69official x realoldmanfucker69, u know*
*the oldmanfucker69 canon url is obviously held by blanky, a cool old fucker who happens to be a man. fitzjames and peglar sometimes lie awake at night, haunted and taunted by the sheer waste of opportunity. blanky sleeps like a baby, fully aware of the extents of his crimes, looking forward to another beautiful day of playing oblivious in the face of misery :)

Hey, @asparklethatisblue, are you still looking for possible modern AU jobs for the Terror boys? I would like to submit for consideration:
A large museum!
This is purely based on my experience, but in terms of having lots of different possible jobs and specializations for the lads, with different levels of status associated with them, I think this could combine the best or the worst of the most popular Terror modern AU settings: corporate and academic. Please imagine with me:
Director John Franklin: more interested in sucking up to the board and/or bringing in large donations than he is the very real and present problems at the museum that are just threatening to get bigger.
Rival curators Crozier and Fitzjames: speaks for itself. Crozier's more of a traditionalist, Fitzjames wants big-budget, high-interaction, media-attention-grabbing new solutions. They fight about it in every weekly meeting.
Head of Admin Thomas Jopson: Secretly runs this place. If he ever took a sick day, the whole museum would fall apart.
Conservation lab technician Harry Goodsir: Loves his job, hates that he could do it EVEN BETTER if the higher-ups would only budget more for conservation. Type of dude who gets into the field because he genuinely loves it & is taken advantage of for the same reasons.
Visitor Services desk staff Gibson and Armitage: It takes two guys to do one half-assed job around here. They mostly sit around, gossip, make after-work plans, and judge tourists who don't know how to read a map.
Security guard Solomon Tozer: Do I have to explain this one? Might be gossiping with the guys at the Visitor Services desk.
Visiting scholar Cornelius Hickey: definitely faked his credentials and probably committed identity theft to get this grant money. Has no business being here. Visitor Services likes him.
Visiting scholar Silna: Doesn't respect any of these people. Just wants to get her research done in peace.
And that's not even all the jobs we can give the boys (and girls)! I haven't even touched on exhibition designers, archivists, social media coordinators, and more! I think Lady Jane would be an excellent advancement coordinator (a high-level fundraiser, basically), and Hodgson would be a very enthusiastic education coordinator.
The ship's boys, of course, are unpaid interns.

Tagged by @acrossthewavesoftime to list 5 topics I can talk on for an hour without preparing any material, thank you! (And my deepest apologies to everyone else who has tagged me in something that I have yet to do—I love being tagged, but don't have the greatest track record with following through).
The War of 1812. I have at LEAST an hour of off-the-cuff material. Do you want the naval war, the western frontier, the political machinations? Historic sites I want to visit? Participants I wish I could hug?
Frederick Marryat. I could easily talk for an hour about his life, his novels and their popular reception, and his travel writing. Just a fascinating guy who lived in a time of great transition and change! Would fight and/or hug him.
The Franklin Expedition. One of my oldest special interests, and there are always new discoveries to discuss! I would probably be talking about a lot of things adjacent to the Franklin Expedition that built the world that launched it: economic conditions in 1840s Britain, colonial wars, and scientific interest in things like surveying and terrestrial magnetism. Also which officers are the coolest. (Le Vesconte and Fitzjames, obviously).
Tumblr media
The American Indian Wars. I keep running into this in my War of 1812 studies (and it's the same cast of characters in the late 18th and early 19th century). Depressing!
Favourite staple recipes and traditional food. Lobscouse, pea soup, and other ways you can eat like a 19th century sailor. I am sad to not have all of my cooking equipment in my tiny apartment kitchen (so much for steamed puddings!)
Tagging @radiojamming (and not just because I shamelessly stole their Two Men meme), @sanguinarysanguinity, @maudeboggins, @daltongraham, @gentlyepigrams, @victoriansecret, and @pagansphinx if you want to do it!

good evening to you all and welcome to cockmojo where tonight we will be counting down my personal top ten terror cocks
those unaffiliated with footyblr may be unfamiliar with the term cock as it’s being used here: all will become clear in time
Tumblr media
special mention before we start to the netsilik hunter (sexy man, deserved a name and some screentime) james clark ross but only in the first episode when he’s all rugged and his beard’s grown out, and mr blanky, who, much like knife dad, fuccs like a broken train but he runs on time if you know what i mean
Tumblr media
in a very respectable tenth place finish, billy gibson. i didn’t see the vision until 1. it was pointed out to me that he looks a lot like pau torres, who is himself very cockable, and 2. i rewatched the scene where he breaks up with hickey. known shagger, massive hater, a very pointy nose, he’s scraped a place on this list.
Tumblr media
a surprise entry at ninth is john irving. inarguably cute in a sort of late 2000s british indie band bassist way, and while i’m not sure i could fix him (he probably needs a man for that) i do think i would have fun trying. ultimately he’s not higher because he’s kind of annoying and his eyebrows piss me off.
Tumblr media
representing the dilves at eighth is doctor macdonald. he’s entrancing to me he has this vibe of like gentle paternal indulgence... like even if you were annoying he’d be very fond of you. and i need that. when he said “i’d like to run that man through” and rubbed his eyes and looked so tired, i really felt something. the crow’s feet, the widow’s peak, the hair, yes!!
Tumblr media
doing it for the feminists, in seventh we have harry goodsir. the loveliest guy on the expedition until he goes nastymode, and i’m fully on board with both versions. this picture was chosen for a reason and it’s bc his long curly hair full beard miserable expression era was simply unbeatable. unfortunately, and this is maybe the most insane thing i’ve ever said about a man, or at least top ten, when his half eaten corpse was laid out face down, and it had noticeable back hair, i got the ick. just to add insult to injury :/
Tumblr media
i’m as surprised as you are that he’s not higher, number six, james fitzjames! he is my pretty pretty princess. nails, hair, hips, heels. high femme queen in his cunty little outfits ordering the men around. i want to brush his hair, one hundred strokes minimum. i think this is less sexual than some others on this list, it’s more appreciation. but my god do i appreciate him.
Tumblr media
stay alive, number five, it’s thomas jopson. most beautiful haunted doll in the arctic, but that pretty face is covering up a seriously compelling #WeirdGuy underneath. all the shiny hair in the world can’t hide an obsession with his boss that in the modern era would be getting him a very serious meeting with HR. what a character, servicetopson you rock my world. but at the end of the day he loses points because i hate the beard. garrigan looks great with a beard in other stuff, i really don’t know why the scurvybeard was so foul. terror hair and makeup department GET IT TOGETHER.
Tumblr media
number phwoar, henry collins is here! he’s big he’s sweet he’s deeply mentally unstable he needs a cuddle and we’ve all seen that gif of him in aliens. would love to make him a really nice cup of tea (seems like a two sugars man), pet his hair as he rests his head in my lap, then fuck up my hip flexors.
Tumblr media
and now... we enter our top three. who’s made it to the prestigious cock podium?
Tumblr media
first up, the winner of our bronze cock medal, which presumably he’ll be flogging for an unreasonable price to someone he’s assured it’s solid gold, “cornelius hickey”! people will bitch and moan about how he’s a violent lunatic who’s killed people like i’m not a cuti romero stan 🙄 i can see beyond that, my third eye is firmly open. the potential for a fun toxic relationship is absolutely off the charts bc that’s the only kind he has. and he’s very pretty when he cries. i can forgive a lot of crimes for a man whose nose entrances me.
Tumblr media
in second place, such a close runner up, i have to award this honour to edward little. a pedestrian choice, you might think, if you don’t know the lore. i couldn’t fully explain my feelings towards this secondary character who’s not especially exciting on first watch when i started the show until i googled his actor... although i lacked the words to express this at the time i was cocking this man when i was 13 and he first appeared in misfits with a stupid neck tattoo and a horrible suit, and i cock him again now. this is a cock that’s followed me all my life, even though i forgot he existed for about a decade in between. who else can truly say they’ve EARNED a spot on my list like he has? he’s sad, he’s sopping wet, i could make him cry extremely easily. mwah
and finally...
Tumblr media
number one. it had to be him, it was always going to be him. solomon tozer, take a bow and i’ll take ten cranberry pills. sol is thee top cock for so many reasons and chief among them is versatility. whatever you need he can be it. handsome soldier boy in a fancy red uniform that shows off his trim little waist? COCK! hostile violent mutineer throwing his life away in a rebellion? COCK! broken man inducted into a cult who cries about it? COCK!!! sexiest man in the damn arctic i know he was beating the boys off with a stick. there is a certain level of sexiness a man can reach where nothing he does is an ick, and i knew he’d reached that for me once i saw him in that insanely stupid hat at sir john’s funeral and didn’t give a fuck. call him tom jones the way he can leave his hat on. keep thotting it up in heaven/hell king i miss you every day. i know it was huge. my heart hurts.

i'm still having a lot of weirdly large feelings about finding james fitzjames. on the one hand, i can't imagine how exciting it must be from the perspective of the team! again, a big congrats on that, that has to have been years in the making.
but i'm also having just big feelings about like... the nature of all of this. that for 176 years, people kept looking. even when most people have forgotten about the expedition, or think of it as little more than a horror story or something confined to biographies. there's something here about the humanity of it all; the grief, the horrors of what those men went through, and also the persistent search for answers that, finally, concluded definitively who one of those men were. it's been almost 200 years, a mystery that should never be solved, but.... part of it just was. that's insane to me and i think it days something special about the people who never gave up.
idk. this is all very unstructured and off the top of my head. but this all feels very profound in a way i didn't expect.

Five ships in five fandoms
with thanks to @tallangrycockatiel for the tag
Well, there's the Enterprise, obviously, the Surprise, the Terror, the Indefatigable...
OK no, I will do this properly
1. Lin Chen/Mei Changsu/Xiao Jingyan (Nirvana in Fire)
Coming in first and surprising absolutely nobody! I am so very onboard with any and all permutations of the Greater Liang Polycule, but I have a special fondness for Guy Who Is Very Invested In Mei Changsu and Guy Who Is Very Invested In Lin Shu becoming jointly Guys Who Are Very Invested In Keeping This Idiot Alive In Spite Of Himself. Also I love angst and this ship offers the incredible buy one get one free deal of grief that your best friend now has someone else who knows more of his secrets and grief that your best friend is burning his life up in service of someone else, all turning on the fulcrum of a man who would probably just die on the spot if he let himself feel one tenth of the things he's been repressing for the last decade. Also, I love characters who won't say what they mean, so. You know.
2. Charley Pollard/Eighth Doctor (Doctor Who Big Finish Audios)
God, they're so weird about each other. It's not romantic but it's not not-romantic and also at one point they eat each other's corpse in an anti-time universe (I think? It's been a while since I listened to Scherzo) and I remember experiencing a lot of confusing and proto-aromantic feelings over them when I was seventeen, so they deserve a mention
3. Francis Crozier/James Fitzjames (The Terror)
YES I FEEL WEIRD ABOUT IT OK. Constantly I am playing this game with my brain where a fic can neither be too historically inaccurate nor too obviously Just Straight-Up RPF and let me tell you, this narrows my options considerably. BUT. Hhhh. The fact that they're doomed from the start. The way both of them, through sheer effort of will, put aside the selves they've been playing and better, truer people, in circumstances that really would have justified the opposite. They're doomed and they keep trying anyway. I'm going to go stare at a wall now and maybe bite something.
4. Kirk/Spock (Star Trek TOS)
I know, I know, I'm basic, but look, I didn't get an E in C4 maths because I was too busy writing k/s fic to revise to deny this truth of my heart now. What can I say, I love a man who is repressing a planet's worth of emotions at any given time. I love gentle bickering, I love putting your life in someone else's hands with absolute trust, I love this simple feeling. Ok, gonna go stare at a different wall for a bit now
5. Crowley/Aziraphale (Good Omens)
This one's dedicated to last summer, when I spent three months losing my goddamn mind, having been a casual Good Omens enjoyer for years at that point. I love all the permutations of these characters, but I do especially love watching Michael Sheen and David Tennant's faces do things. I think I mentioned before my love of characters who won't say what they mean, and I especially enjoy SIX THOUSAND YEARS OF IT AND COUNTING. Also, as someone who didn't so much break with the church as saunter vaguely away, GO fic sure does tap some long-buried part of my psyche.
~
I have all the object permanence of a concussed goldfish, so I'm almost certainly forgetting some personality-defining ship, but! I have done my best and no one should criticise me!
tagging @betweencrossedblades @trans-cuchulainn (you can count each tain recension as a separate fandom if you like), @cendiar , @bitterflames and anyone else who'd like to do it

SLEEPOVER SATURDAY YAYYYY I have 2.
1. Because I’m still stuck in fucking Texas, top 3 best US states
2. Top potential AU’s for The Terror
Oh noooooo wishing you a speedy departure tomorrow!
I've lived a lot of places and done a lot of road tripping and without further details on which to define "best" I'm going to go with the three states I feel the most personal connection to and say Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan. I love Lake Superior, I grew up in that area and sometimes I am very homesick for it. I've been trying to develop the same feeling of connection to the landscape in New England since transplanting and I'm not going to lie, it is rough going. I keep saying I am going to try to get into hiking and rock identification so I can see the mountains and maybe 2024 is the year I buckle down and do that.
First off: Star Trek AU obviously. I'm really bad at coming up with plots and writing long fics but I am beginning to take notes for a Star Trek AU in case the Terror SciFi Fest happens again this upcoming May.
Secondly: Ghosts/spiritualism/haunted house AU. While I do enjoy a good modern AU from time to time, to me part of the draw of The Terror is the time period it is set. I am fascinated by the Victorian era, the advances in medicine during the time period, the rise in popularity of ghosts and ghost stories, and I think I'd get a lot of enjoyment out of researching to write an AU that takes advantage of this somehow.
Also, I am obsessed with haunted houses as they are used to represent familial trauma, codependence, grief and loneliness, etc etc, and I think it would be fun to take Crozier out of The Horrors only to put him into a different flavor of The Horrors <3
Lastly: Musicians/orchestra AU. Gonna be honest, I do not have any of the requisite knowledge to write this and it does not interest me enough to do this research. I want somebody else to write this so I can read it. However, I saw a post once that was the show writer going through and saying what each character's job would be if they lived in the modern day and what he said about Fitzjames was that he'd be a surgeon or somebody else with very specialized knowledge, someone who is the best at something. And while yeah, a specialist surgeon is this, and specialist surgeons are, in my experience, divas with complexes, for reasons of personal taste (dislike of the medical field irl and preference for show contemporary AUs over modern ones) I think it would be more interesting to just skip over the medical layer and make Fitzjames a diva with a complex.
This man plays the violin and he is the best at it and he and Crozier cannot stand each other because Crozier has been playing longer, does not care about the limelight, and actively scorns Fitzjames for doing so. I just have this idea in my head of Fitzjames saying to someone else that Crozier plays a perfectly serviceable, workmanlike violin, but he obviously doesn't truly care for it, he doesn't play with any passion, and Fitzjames who has been doing this his whole life and made it his whole life, the only thing he's ever been good at that he's had to hang all his hopes on, finds that intolerable. Meanwhile Crozier cares about the violin very deeply but doesn't really show it to anybody and keeps to himself because loving music and loving your coworkers are two different things.
Additional inspiration for this idea is the fact that when Phantom of the Opera shut down on Broadway a couple months ago (last year? What is the passage of time...) I saw a news article about it which said some of the people in the orchestra had been playing the show together since it started running in 1986. The drama within that pit must have been insane and I desperately want to read about it.

Rereading The Terror
Chapter Nineteen: Crozier
We begin with a bang and with poor Mr Terry (of “Mr Terry! Open the Flag Box!” fame) decapitated by Tuunbaq and his head left on the railing for his pals to find. Nasty.
Also some needlessly nasty descriptions of Hickey - talking of him “flashing a once-winning smile that now showed only four of his remaining six teeth”. I truly hate how Simmons here falls into the trope of making a so-called “bad” character physically unattractive - apart from anything else, it’s just lazy.
He’s speaking to Crozier here on behalf of the entire crew who want a Divine Service from the Captains after all the recent unpleasantness. Very interesting that Hickey’s already going out of his way to speak for others and generally organise collective action. There’s a great wee paragraph further regarding his personality too that jumps out at me:  “Every ship had sea lawyers - like rats, they were a fact of Naval life - and Hickey, despite his bad grammar and total lack of formal education, struck Crozier as the kind of sea lawyer that, on a difficult voyage, soon began fomenting actual mutiny.”
Crozier also makes a point of denigrating Fitzjames’ heroics in this chapter - he thinks it’s not that special that Jamie Fitzjamie saved a man from drowning. “...although in Crozier’s experience, an officer rescuing a drowning man was an almost weekly occurrence since few sailors knew how to swim”. Take that as a sign to get going on your Terror/Baywatch cross-over fics I suppose, lads.
He also speaks ill of the dead, calling Sir John an aging windbag and mentioning that “despite his frequent laughter, [he] never seemed to understand anyone else’s jokes.”
On a lighter note, my heart soars and hurts a bit to see another mention of Crozier and Little being good bros and very much on the same wavelength:  “Crozier left behind a skeleton crew of six men commanded by First Lieutenant Edward Little - who, like Crozier, would rather have his kidney stones removed with a spoon than be forced to suffer sermons”.  I like that Little’s dour, curmudgeonly vibes stayed in the show but honestly, I wish again that we’d gotten to see more of that early harmony in their relationship like we do here.

Favourite Blorbo, The Terror related, and other fandom/niche?
well, James Fitzjames is my special afflicted child…
then there’s Dorian Pavus from dragon age, and Nori from the Hobbit. Generally if there’s a pointy man with a sharp nose you can find me sighing adoringly over them

hey Terror fans help a fella out!
I have a wedding to go to on Halloween. It is, of course, a costume party. My dumb ass has decided, in fucking Texas of all places, to dress as one of the cold boys (most likely Fitzjames or one of our lovely sideburn men).
I have a special request for the fandom, if they're up for it! I desperately need a place where I could get one of THESE bad boys:
Tumblr media
Or possibly a pattern to make one, as I have... kind of a big head.
Recommendations for a place to get a decent coat like that, even if it's just costume stuff, would be helpful as well. I don't imagine I'll have much luck in the thrift shops, considering the typical climate!
In return I will 100% doodle your favorite cold boy. Feel free to DM me, or even post any links or web pages in the replies! Thanks in advance, lads! 💙
