so, in hobbit fashion, i like to “give gifts” on my birthday, and because next week sucks for me irl, i’ve deciding to do it early in the form of my top ten favorite fiveya fics! my opinion isn’t much, but i wanna bring some attention to my favorite writers and i wanted to make a banner so there. 

disclaimer: this is me, personally, what i liked, what resonated. it’s not objective by any means, though i highly recommend all of these fics. to that end, some of these are dark, nsfw, thematically not for everyone. so make sure you read the tags before diving in fully. also! this is by no means exhaustive. i’m a weirdo who keeps a full list of the fics i love, so these are just some of the ones i can’t escape lol. 

without further ado!

The Family Jewels by @igpitn. c’mon. if you haven’t read this fic. I seriously don’t know what you’re doing. CEO!AU Five is incredibly compelling and dark and interesting and surprisingly, so is the timid little vanya that maddy literally makes come to life in this au. this fic had me on the edge of my seat until the very end, and there are lines of dialogue in this fic that I think of seriously all the time. god. she really Did That.

The Malice and Caprice of Time Series by CarpeDiemForLife. this series is straight up incredible. I literally think about it regularly. the descriptions are lovely and almost stark, and I can always picture exactly what is happening in the scene, which is rare for me as a reader. this author does not shy away from angst, and from real consequences for characters, which - added to their phenomenal writing - makes this series one of my rereads. 

inside your head the sound of glass by @fiveyavibecheck. if the richard siken title isn’t enough (for me it was) bri changed the game here. This fic pretty much invented dark fic for me. the writing is both poetic and shockingly dry - it’s one of those fics where you literally cannot think of a better way to say something that’s been said, where no beat is missed, and it’s just iconic. 

Foundations by lifeofsnark. this is just.. so good. look, I never read WIPs bc I hate waiting and that’s my problem, but casey’s insight into what a post s2 would look like for fiveya and the rest of the fam is just gratifying to read and so character-accurate you’re going to cry. I promise. 

Growing Pains by @igpitn. maddy truly snapped with this fic. Five “rescuing” Vanya after all the fun miscommunications is just perfect, and I think it’s a really realistic portrayal of what would happen to these two if Five couldn’t be artificially aged up. her Five is just genius, and I love every bit of this fic. 

treat me like a stranger by @rappaccini. my intellectual side wanted to choose el’s rewrite but I JUST LOVE THIS FIC SO MUCH. it’s funny and witty and dead clever, all marks of el’s writing. Five is the perfect combination of genius and an idiot in stealing Leonard’s identity, and the plot that unfolds is so much fun but it has a wonderful heart as well. 

I Call You Mine by TooYoungToFeelThisTired. God works hard, but this writer works harder!! This is my personal favorite. Five is wonderfully dark and possessive and definitely a psycho, but in the best way. Vanya’s own darkness shines through beautifully, and at this point, you guys can probably tell I love fics where we’re forced to deal with the messed up age problems these two have. It’s not always pretty, but this writer just handles it so well. 

the pull of you by @fiveyasapphics. The regency au!! I’m not over this fic - one of my favorite aus for sure. The ending (no spoilers) is one of the most gratifying things ever, and the plot is so well thought out. I love regency aus but the fiveya fandom seriously doesn’t even need another one when this one is so perfect! 

There’s Nothing to Be Afraid Of by @fiveyaaas. This is one of tori’s shorter fics, but it’s my absolute favorite and I reread it all the time. on the surface, it’s just fun smut, but there’s something about this five and vanya that they just captured perfectly - vanya is hesitant and quiet, five is in control but still loving, and the fam makes me laugh every time.

Forbidden Room by @repeatinglitanies. honestly I don’t know how to describe the plot of this fic without spoiling it, but it’s a must-read. This is Tasha’s brand of darkness, and it is glorious. My heart has never beat so fast for a character than it did for vanya in this fic - god I was so nervous. Any fic that can do that is a phenomenal fic in my book.

So I started shipping after rewatching season 1, and was already deep in by the time I started seeking out fics. That said, my first Fiveya fic was: 

(Please Don’t) Hesitate by @fiveyaaas​! Such a good place to start! She is one of the best Fiveya authors out there, and the most friggin’ prolific of writers too, so you’ll never be lacking in content. This one is such a solid angst piece, but she’s got the range--fluff, angst, smut, you name it. I’m super lucky she was my first stop in the fandom!

Other fave fics (keeping in mind this fandom is blessed and I could not begin to list all the great fics I’ve read, much less the many waiting on my to-read list)...

inside your head the sound of glass by @fiveyavibecheck: Read the tags on this one before diving in, of course, but wow. Wow. WOW. This fic brutalized and excited me. Amazing dark fic that explores the Fiveya dynamic in such an incredible way. Such a talented writer, and still one of my fave Fiveya fics.

Alone Together by lofticries: This is one of a few ‘Vanya winds up in the Apocalypse with Five’ fics that I loved! Watching the two characters grow up and grow together was incredible. I just loved everything about it. The atmosphere. The tension. The character development. *chef kiss* Definitely a gateway fic for me, as it was also near the beginning of my involvement in Fiveya.

What’s up y’all! I’ve been seeing quite a few people doing weekly read lists or general rec lists lately, and thought it looked like fun! Here’s some of my favorite fics, old and new, from all different fandoms!

The Darkest of Times by IAM_Kneazle/writing_as_tracey - Riverdale, Bughead, M, 193k, 24/24 chapters

I’ve not been active in the Riverdale fandom for a bit, and honestly I could stand for a good reread of this one, so I may gush about it again later, but it is such a standout to me! This is basically the first season of Riverdale set in the Harry Potter universe. HP AUs are a weakness of mine, especially when they’re as well-written as this! Alice was honestly one of my favorite parts of this fic; she’s so well done, so Slytherin! 

family feud by @rappaccini - The Umbrella Academy, Fiveya/Alluther/Benkliego, T+, 11k, 1/1 chapter

Of the few TUA fics I’ve read, this one cracked me up the most, hands down. I can’t sum this up any better than rapp’s tags: yes incest, five hargreeves breaks the internet, the power of teenage hormones shuts down the academy. It is a glorious account of a very easily imagined interview with the Hargreeves siblings, in which a defiant Five and an oblivious Klaus start the snowball that becomes the avalanche of Harcest horrors coming to light. The dialogue is golden. The siblings are chaotic. The internet reactions are meta. You might need to lay down after this, but it’s very worth it.

The Newborn by fizzfics - Twilight, EdBella/canon Twilight couples, T, 218k, 62/? chapters

This is an AU where James turned Bella into a vampire while she lived in Phoenix, which prompts her to move to Forks with her father. Not only is the idea of this AU genius, it is also so in-depth in regards to the characters. Bella’s lack of experience as a vampire and the way she stumbles through discovering what she is until she meets the Cullens is amazing, and I can’t get over the adorable bonding scenes between Bella and Esme, or the amazing way the author writes Rosalie and her complicated story.

The Suit by @imlikat - Bleach, ChadIshi, E, 28k, 10/10 chapters

First of all, shout out to Kat for snaring me into this ship to begin with. Second, shout out to Kat for coming back into the fandom and bringing me new content that I didn’t have to write myself. All my love.

The Beating of Our Hearts (Is the Only Sound) by whiteduck6 - Bleach, IkkaYumi, M, 5k, 1/1 chapter

A sweet, slightly sad modern AU oneshot with Yumichika planning his and Ikkaku’s wedding. I’m a sucker for figure skater!Yumi, which is also included, and sewing master!Uryuu. The amount of thought put into this Yumichika is wonderful. He’s complex and his emotions about the wedding and Japan’s laws/views on homosexuality are beautifully written.

Rose Fangs and Wolf Thorns by @ouatlovr - ASOIAF/Game of Thrones, Sansaery, E, 1.4mil (yeah I’m fuckin’ serious), 514/514 chapters (sequel ongoing!)

On my AO3 bookmarks I’ve tagged this ambitious lesbians, and that’s pretty much it. The author takes Sansa, Margaery, and every other ASOIAF they write and explores every aspect of their characters, breaks them down and makes them expose their barest bones and hardest truths. Lots of crying came with reading this fic and it is one of my all time favorites. Heed the archive warnings!

The Moon Laughs

Summary: After attempting to transport all of his siblings back in time, Five wakes up to a familiar scene. Again. And again. And again. He doesn't know why he keeps being transported back to the day of his father's funeral, but he is determined to not waste it now that he has the foresight to prevent the apocalypse. He just wished he didn't feel so alone doing it all over again. 

Opinion: Wow. Fuck me up why don’t you. This fic is ridiculously well written. I recommend everyone read. I got teary-eyed and everything. This fic is also the reason I ship Klive. I don’t think that the writer intended that since while they haven’t said anything anti they also seem to be mostly ignoring the canon Alluther subplot. But the way they wrote these two and the way they play off each other and this one moment that resulted in a “Fuck I Ship It”™ epiphany.  Well, it did me in. Also got some Fiveya feels. With dashes of Horrance and Five x Ben all of which I ship even if the fic is very non-shippy in how the relationships are presented. It comes off as good friends rather than family but everyone is a disaster and they are trying. It’s still a must-read for the TUA Fandom in my opinion and I think everyone should give it a shot.

I have spent days reading Five fics since season 2 aired, so I decided that I might as well start jotting them all down for anyone’s interested. It’s a long list, here we go xD

Completed

1.  Blood and Steel by @e-vasong, T, 6900 words

Diego gets shot. Five is evasive. There is a bit of an emotional reckoning, and neither of them are even vaguely equipped for it.

2.  Carry Him by ClaraCivry (Kat_Of_Dresden), not rated, 2422 words

`Five times Five's siblings carried him, took his weight.

Some hurt Five, some fluff, but mostly Hargreeves being worried and looking after him.

3.  Small Changes by calypso42, T, 3509 words

“I need to ask you something.” He set down the large stack of books he was carrying beside him. Klaus glanced at a few of the titles - Consciousness in the Brain - Memory & the Role of the Hippocampus - Soul vs. Matter: A Comprehensive Look at the Origins of Sentience - and grimaced.

“Are you… having an existential crisis, or something? Because I am possibly the worst person you could go to for that.”

When Five goes to Klaus to ask him something about his powers, Klaus doesn’t think much of it. At least, until he realizes that what he thought was simple curiosity was actually deeper than that, leading to a revelation about Five himself.

Number Five is cornered once again by commission agents, but this time with his family.

After dealing with the second apocalypse, Five takes time to think about everything that’s happened. Klaus seizes the opportunity for some quality sibling bonding.

8.  With Two Arms by karcheri, T, 3345 words

What it comes down to, really, is that Five had been too eager for results. Once it became clear to him that there was a connection between his powers and his energy level the obvious course of action, as he saw it, was to test this information. The hypothesis was this: higher energy levels = stronger powers and the easiest way to get more energy is to eat more. Pretty simple stuff. Too simple.

or Five times that Five starves himself and one time that he gets called out on it.

9.  Number Five The Monster Under The Bed by Kraeyola, T, 5460 words

It's easy to forget sometimes when you look at Five; small lanky body, little boy-scout shorts, and a perfectly pristine uniform. A smooth youthful face that's always wearing a too-serious expression for someone (supposedly) so young. Not that the siblings don't respect Five as an equal, it's just... well. It's hard to take him so seriously. Especially when he gets mad and makes such an adorable pouty face.

It's why they find it so difficult to deal with reconciling Five to the boy they (thought they) knew, to the boy they're seeing standing right in front of them. But you can't really blame them, can you?

After all, it's hard to believe things without witnessing them first hand.

There is a monster under the bed and it's in the shape of a thirteen-year-old boy.

10.  Nonlinear theory for dummies by Inkjade, Gen, 4786 words

After forty-five years of fighting, it's kind of hard to know how to stop.

11.  Vital Signs by aye_of_newt, M, 3524 words

Sometimes, it's difficult for Klaus to tell if someone is alive or dead.

When Five shows up, covered in blood after killing the Board, Klaus panics.

12.  Not with me by Claracivry (Kat_Of_Dresden) Gen, 5681 words

They never asked if any of that blood was his.

Five is bleeding, and he is also giving up.

AU to 2X07, with hurt Five because after all that boy has been through...

13.  Nothing’s Going on (and that’s the problem) by briegretful, T, 5231 words

(Directly after the season 2 ending, except everything's normal and everyone's still around) He did it. Five saved his family. They landed in 2019 and everything, somehow, worked out.

He's not sure how to deal with that.

14.  A New Life by BirdInTheCave, T, 3884 words

Allison had convinced Ray to come back to 2019 with her and her family and after a month of being cooped up in the house with the other Hargreeves plus their own unconventional guests, Ray suggests they spend some time alone. He's still struggling to fully comprehend the new world he's stepped into but he's determined that with Allison at his side he can get used to anything. Allison can't find a reason to say no. She should have said no.

Luckily for her, Five will always be there for his family, now that he's back.

15. Side Effects May Vary by CivilBores, T, 6565 words

Allison crosses her arms. “Five,” she says firmly, “when was the last time you slept?”

“I don’t know,” Five says honestly. At Allison’s expression, he quickly adds, “But it doesn’t matter. I don’t know what it’ll take for all of you pea-brained idiots to realize that.”

“We may not be as intelligent as you, Five,” Allison says, “but at least all of us are smart enough to know how to take care of ourselves.”

OR

A week after the world is saved, Five convinces himself that he is still experiencing lingering side effects of paradox psychosis. His family has something to say about that.

The timeline is still messed up, obviously. There is still so much work to do, still so much to fix. His siblings have questions and concerns, and they want answers.

i must say that by the time i started reading fics i had already been a fiveya enthusiast for a bit BUT these are some of the firsts that i read and they definitely sparked more of my love towards the ship

a storm you can weather by rappaccini

i remember this being my introduction to fiveya fics and i couldnt have picked something better bcs it left such an impact on me that i have to read it again every now and then. the atmosphere is perfect, i could see everything described so clearly in my head and i adored this “grittier” take on vanya. the ending always makes me smile after all that angst. what i mean to say is you absolutely cant miss this one (or any of the other works by the author for that matter). “He goes to Griddys, and takes a butter knife to a gunfight.” [chefs kiss] outstanding line. its also a character study that is incredibly well thought-out. 

the pull of you by sweetheartbitterheart

AHHHH so many feelings about this one, a whole classic imo. regency au, served the whole p&p vibes and more. super talented author once again. i was holding my breath or giggling like a dumbass at ALL of their interactions throughout this, the prose, dialogues and subtleties are delicious. side-characters on point too!!!!! 

Nothing Will Ever Be Enough by fiveyaaas

well, it wouldnt be a fiveya fic rec without tori who is always blessing the fandom w/ their works. this was the first fic that i read by them and some time later i can say without a doubt that their smuts and fics as a whole never fail to deliver, this is def an uhhhhh intense and angsty one for sure. god tier, the jealousy was delightful. 👀👀👀👀 sparrow!five/vanya/five, enough said.

nearly didn't notice the gentlest feeling by sweetheartbitterheart

another one that i cherish a lot... actually, let me just go ahead and pretend this is canon instead of s2. it captures the vibe that five and vanya have in the show so well, their tenderness makes my heart combust. “So you still love me?" she tries to play it off as teasing but there's a hint of insecurity in her voice, some shyness in her smile. Five can't allow that. "Of course I do.” YUPPP the tears are falling forever after that. also the hargreeves dynamics here are portrayed wonderfully, vanya remebering what she did to allison for example was heartbreaking and a cathartic moment we deserved. also ben knowing all along is too real lmao.

klaus at the end was the cherry on top obviously, big same.

just a reminder that no entire genre of fanfic is the "problem". dark fic is not a problem. want more fluff? write more fluff. want more angst? write more angst.

or boost the fics you DO like. boost the authors you enjoy. make rec lists. run fluff centric events, Valentine's day is coming up. that's a perfect time to do a fluff event.

you can support and make fan content you prefer without shitting on the stuff you don't necessarily like. that usually works a lot better lol just in my experience. drama and in-fighting tends to kill a fandom. if all you do is hate on and demonize the stuff you don't care for (which literally no one is forcing you to read/like/interact with btw) all it's gonna do is make ppl not like you lol.

fiveya is truthfully a pretty small crew. the tua fandom is relatively small and fiveya is even smaller. and BECAUSE we're small, we try to be respectful and kind to one another. we don't all like the same shit and for a looooong time, there WASN'T any dark fic in fiveya. there isn't a lot rn lol. but yeah, there have been more fic lately with darker/angstier themes. there's been more smut. but there has also been fluff. there's been fix it, there's been gen.

getting angry cuz ppl are making content they enjoy and are having a good time is a dick move and sounds like you gotta work on you......

You ship Allison and Luther right? Me too. Just wondering if you have any fic recs for them?

i do, but i actually haven’t read much tua fanfic--only a couple fiveya fics and one of them had aluther as a background couple but not worth reading if they are what you are looking for specifically. (it was called “little talks” if you’re interested though.)

honestly i should probably read more tua fics so i can rec them (and i should start writing them more too and hopefully i’ll post some aluther soon!)
