what are the best art books you own?
That is a very tough question to answer. I've got a lot of different types. Background/environment art, keyframe collections, storyboard collections, design material, setting material, and overall general art books.
I think one of the ones that I find the "best", is Information Destruction: Mass Media Crash by Jun Inagawa. The intersection of Rap music and culture with anime and Japanese style/culture as a form of expression to go outside of societal and cultural expectations just really clicks with me, especially given my investment and interest in both.
⚠️Warning: Sexual (but censored) Content Below⚠️
It's definitely integral to Ingawa's style, and he talks about at length about how people view stuff like Magical Girls and various other pieces of anime and Japanese culture, and uses those preconceptions to create an antithesis to them to break out from that sense of conformity. That for example, all magical girls must be pure and untouched, and if they aren't they are no longer viewed as "real" or "true" magical girls.
It's hard to really get that idea across through just a single example, but the art book has a huge amount of art that speaks to Inagawa's overall message and direction with his art. For anybody interested you can buy the art book from here. Unfortunately I've not found a scanned version of the art book online, but there is this YouTube video flipping through it.
Alongside that I'd definitely put my Dorohedoro: Mud and Sludge art book up there. It's so interesting to get a look into how Hayashida created the legendary series, and even just getting to see things as simple as how Hayashida created the collages for each volume cover/design was incredible. Certainly a foundational art book in terms of quality and that "One of One" nature that Hayashida has. I'd also recommend the Dorohedoro Sketch Books (there's 2) but they can be a little tough to find and are pretty expensive more often than not. Also, it's a really wonderfully crafted art book. Hardcover, but the covers are more like boards, if that makes sense. Very rigid and stiff and flat, it produces a very unique feel.
Additionally, you can find the entire art book online for free if you want to take a look before purchasing it.
In terms of impact for "best", I'd probably volunteer something like the Neon Genesis Evangelion Storyboard Collection. It was really my first "critical" anime, and has certainly left an impact that has been felt in my overall tastes and appreciation for anime and manga. Because of that, being able to see the background of the series, how it was framed, conceptualized, and executed upon just feels right. It's a golden ticket to something I've held very dear for a long while now. In similar fashion, I really do cherish my Garden of Sinners storyboard collection.
Unfortunately I can't find any scans of it that are readily available online, and given the age of the collection it can be hard to find them all for a reasonable price. I do know though that you can find the first 2 or so volumes for reasonable prices online in Japan.
I think the last that I'll put on this list is my FLCL Archives art book. It's a bit of a hodgepodge of art, key animation, some storyboards, design material, and so on and so forth. It's an all in one for fans of FLCL and definitely something I'd recommend to any fan of the series. I didn't watch FLCL when it first aired, because I wasn't old enough obviously, but I still get such an intense feeling of nostalgia from it. That the stars just sort of align and when I'm watching it the world melts away in that moment. I just get really absorbed in it when I experience it, and the art book is an extension of that. There's a lot to it so I'm always taking stuff in. One day I'd love to own more of the FLCL work, but the storyboard collection for it is insanely expensive, and the other materials aren't near as robust.
I can't find the FLCL Archives art book online, but predecessors that overlap with it such as FLCLism can be found here
There's a lot more I'd love to discuss and share, but over text and in a single post it'd be far too much to digest in reasonable fashion, so I'll save it for another time or post.

FLCL Retrospective: The Hero’s (Horny) Journey
FLCL Retrospective: The Hero’s Horny Journey
FLCL, oh gimme that foo-ri coo-ri. The early 2000’s found me sneaking into my mom’s tv room to catch Adult Swim’s broadcast of a bizarre six-episode… what I would call event, about yet another boy caught up in mecha-madness. Now, before I managed to write this off as some offbrand random wannabe EVA, I found myself utterly entranced and drunk on the stuff,
Whether you caught the madness of the…

FLCLick Noise - Archival Scan
We should be a go!
[Internet Archive Link]
FLCLick Noise is a book published in 2010 that is a deep dive into the production of and creative influences that went into the 2000 anime FLCL by Studio GAINAX. Framed as a conversation between FLCL director and series lead Kazuya Tsurumaki, and FLCL character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the two creatives watch the show together and record their thoughts episode-by-episode, alongside a prologue and a “bonus track”. It is in Japanese, with primarily text and screenshots from the show for use as conversational reference, though there is some art as well (almost all of which is available elsewhere).
FLCL is pretty infamous as a show for its free-wheeling compositional style and loose production process; everyone involved was able to throw in visual ideas, dialogue, plot concepts, and so on. Additionally, FLCL slots pretty clearly into GAINAX’s “Otaku commentary” oeuvre - it is very much anime, *extremely* anime, it would be ludicrous to suggest otherwise; but in addition to being anime it was also a vehicle for the creative team to put in ideas and influences that they believed the anime industry was not utilizing at the time, such as its rock-album concept soundtrack or its josei/seinen manga inspired-character designs.
It is this backdrop that makes a book like FLCLick Noise simultaneously more valuable for understanding FLCL than most other shows, and even possible to exist in the first place. Much of it is fun asides, many of the creative decisions are personal whims, but there is so much to those whims that it is worth reading a book about them. If you want to answer the question “why does FLCL exist the way that it does”, this book will answer that question in more detail than any other source will.
Alas this is a complex and large book - I will aim to translate it someday, but I cannot guarantee neither the timeline nor the quality of that translation as I am by no means a professional in that regard. If you want to get a sample of what the book contains, anime-youtuber-extraordinaire Hazel quasi-coincidentally just released a video essay on FLCL that has an entire section on this book and its contents (I learned of this book from her tweeting about it during research for the video, so the timeline is not pure kismet). If you want the highlights and so much more, it is an amazing video. Meanwhile, I do hope to post a “raw text” version of the different sections somewhat soon, to assist those who do want to read it themselves and would find that would help with the translation.
As always, I hope this is a valuable addition to the ‘akashic record’ of 90’s-era anime history, and gives something special to the FLCL-heads out there like me.
(I'll tag @flclarchives for the two-for-one this week, if they don't mind! And I apologize for the scan quality here - I wanted to do it non-destructively, as this is not a large print run book, which meant my typical flatbed was a no go and the new overhead setup I used was a comedy of errors. Fortunately this is a book about reading text, and despite the errors it's all perfectly readable.)

I might of asked this question awhile back on insta but what are some visual inspirations for each character in the Hellaween trio?? Like were there any characters you had in mind while designing them?? I just absolutely love how simplistic and charming you managed to make each of them, its all I ever wanted for my art, so it would be nice to see the inspiration of what inspires me haha (Can't wait for book 2 btw!)
None of them were inspired by specific existing characters, they're all cherry picked from stylistic influences, friends, fashion trends, music and culture I'm fond of. I was a teenager in the 2000's so mall goth/emo, california skate and ska is something I pulled a lot from. "What if MCR did the soundtrack to Scooby Doo?" and "What if there was a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater level set in a Spirit Halloween store?" are two questions I've posed a lot to describe the characters and world of Hellaween.
For art style I've pulled a lot from Invader ZIM, FLCL, Soul Eater, Jamie Hewlett, The Muppets, plus online artists I've looked up to for years.

Minors not allowed. Will be blocked. Sorry just how it is since I'll be posting lewd eventually
Feel free to DM me if you wish. Always happy to meet and talk to new people.
I'm a transwomen who was finally convinced to make a Tumblr. My main focus here is 1 part be a thirsty horny little gremlin, 1 part talking about mental health stuff, and 1 part talk about cool art.
I do take mental health stuff seriously and will be talking a lot about it as someone who's life has been fucked over by it more then once. I'll be talking a lot about life with depression, borderline personality disorder, and dysphoria. As well as topics I'll have to spoiler (is that even possible on Tumblr?) due to their sensitive nature. Steps one can take on how to deal with having them as well as how best to help friends you know who suffer from them. Add some good to the world and hopefully help people not make the same dumb mistakes I've made. Seriously BPD is awful to have.
When I'm not talking about more serious important things I will probably be thirsting over cute people and being a lewd horny KeyjklfjdklsSmashiing little sub :3
Kinks: Haha uuhhhh a lot. Honestly when I enter hyper horny mode I can be very open to many degenerate things. Growing up on Hentai really opened my mind to things and I have no shame. I tend to be more submissive, but ironically have dommed more transwomen despite that (seriously some of you are so fucking submissive like holy shit)
I like bondage, BDSM, edging, being pinned down, pain, petplay, watersports, handholding, and well honestly be easier to list things I'm not into. Also fun fact having my face sat on temporally cures all mental illnesses, bet you're therapist won't tell you that secret tip. Seriously that's like number 1 kink right there. So if you have a cute butt then get comfortable right here :3
Things I'm not into: I guess blood, scat, and things like drugs or fireplay. Anything illegal or non consensual. Beyond those though just ask, I'm probably into it or willing to try.
Other interest: I enjoy video games, typically more single player stuff as I'm shit at games. Big into manga and anime though I rarely watch/read new ones lately. Got back into reading a bit when I can. Dabbled in all kinds of art, but nothing stuck yet. Maybe I'll share past work? I think a lot about game design and mayyyy be working on something that may or may never exist. My musical interest range from things like Atarashii Gakko, Alt-J, Susumu Hirasawa, Clipping, and yes of course, Death Grips. That and whatever music I find through AMV's. In general I love media and like to seek out odd lesser known things when I can.
Favorites:
Films: Memories of Matsuko (haha like anyone knows what this is), Confessions, City of God, The Dirties
Anime Films: End of Eva, A Silent Voice, Made in Abyss Dawn of the Deep Soul, Redline
TV Shows: Sopranos, The Leftovers, Lost, Great Teacher Onizuka (1998 version)
Anime Shows: Hunter X Hunter, Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (God the Count can fuck me any day)
Video Games: Outer Wilds, Wind Waker, Shadow of the Colossus, Omori
Albums: Amarok by Mike Oldfield (Probably the most odd thing I have on here), Hawaii: Part 2, Splendor and Misery by Clipping, Pale Machine by Boen.
Books: House of Leaves, The First Law books (only read first 4 so far)
Manga: Oyasumi Punpun (favorite piece of media of all time btw. Banner pic is from there), Berserk, Ouran High School Host Club, Boys Run the Riot
I will be talking about cool media and recommending shit often.
Art, mental health, and a lotta lewd will be what's posted here so if that interest then stick around. :3
Oh and feel free to ask me questions. No topic is off the table with me.

would you happen to know the lore behind this drawing? ie where it was originally put, i'd assume an image book ie FLCL Archives and not the manga?
any info about it would be greatly appreciated (i'm asking on behalf of a friend)
Its caption in the Archives states it was drawn by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto as a bonus poster included with Vol. 2 of the VHS/DVD in Japan! I'm not too sure about the isolated art of Mamimi though, it could be a fan edit or from somewhere else I'm not familiar with.

For those who stumble upon my account... Hello and how are ya? This is my very first time using Tumblr! You can refer to me as Banana Cat, Yume, Dreamy, Floof or JJ. I'm a genuinely curious individual who sometimes gets obsessed with stuff that I eventually want to get engaged with or stuff that I have no intention of trying out, but I'm very fascinated by it. I'm also just a silly, creative Canadian who's trying to get the most out of life.

The Saga of Tanya The Evil: Complete Setting Material
Note: For Those That Want To Check Out The Art Book But Can't Afford It, Click Here For A Free Online Version
So this is a very cool art book, for a very cool series, from a very cool studio. I sorta wish there was a key animation or storyboard collection for the anime because it's so interesting and intense, but beggars can't really be choosers. Regardless, some initial history of the series might be cool for some, and provides even more reason to be impressed.
I think the most interesting thing is that the light novel for Tanya The Evil is completely different. It's not a super strong toddler out on the battlefield, but a child fighting for the ability to not have to put their life on the line every single day. It's far more tactical, far less showy, and incredible technical by comparison. Which is awesome. Two almost entirely different products, and both are amazing in their own right.
What's also amazing is the studio behind the anime, Nut (yes, that's their name). The Saga of Tanya The Evil was their first anime (not counting a FLCL movie they worked on with 2 other studios). It was the first series, all the way back in 2017 and they killed it. Not many studios can say that they nailed their first project as well as Nut did.
So at the end of the day, The Saga of Tanya The Evil is a crazy bold and brash anime adaptation that put Nut on the map, and gave us super cool art books like this Tanya The Evil setting material one, which has some really beautiful art underneath the dust jacket.
There's loads of extra details alongside the art in this book as well, just little extra pieces and drawings to help spice it up. Like this cover page for the character design section of the book, or the little Tanya illustration that acts as a cover page to the whole book.
Overall in the book, there's 6 "chapters", though effectively 4 or even 3. Character Design, Prop Design, Environment Line Art, Staff Interview, Environment Art, and Light Novel Illustrations. Other than the Staff Interview and LN Illustrations, the chapters of the book are pretty beefy and cover a really solid amount of information and insight. I mean, just look at the character design stuff for Tanya.
Tanya alone has 8 pages dedicated to her in the Character Design chapter, eight. Most will only have 2 or maybe 3, but because of that it covers a really nice breadth of characters that take you all over the place. It's really interesting to see just how much detail and effort is placed into how so many of these characters look, as they end up feeling somewhat simplified when in color and in motion.
Next up is the Prop Design chapter, and I found this section to be the most interesting of the batch. The detail and research put into a lot of the historical weapons and utilities of the era was really impressive, and the detail and thought process for some of the fictional pieces of equipment was super interesting to follow. In contrast to the Character Design chapter though, this one features a lot more full color and even CG work.
Following Prop Design is the Environment Line Art chapter, and man, line art just really gets me. It's something you really take for granted in a lot of shows and you don't really realize how much detail and design work is placed into stuff. Just page upon page upon page of sprawling environments, massive castles or buildings, and all manner of other thing.
Skipping over the Staff Interview (because it's in Japanese) we come to the fully completed environment work. Devoid of characters, motion, and misdirection, the scenery and detail absolutely sucks you in. It's crazy how detailed some of the art ends up.
And last but not least is the Light Novel Cover Illustrations. It's rather small detail overall, but I really appreciate that they went through the trouble of including them because they're so good, and basically the only way outside of the LNs to have Shinobu Shinotsuki's illustrations. Of course, I had to go with my favorite cover illustration, Volume 7, though 6 is a close second.
At the end of the day, for any Tanya The Evil fans, I'd say this art book is highly, highly recommended. I know there's a bit of an impediment due to the price of it, but overall you can grab it for a somewhat reasonable price. eBay has listings that are pretty pricy, but buying in Japan through a proxy service you can get much more reasonable prices and even deals on shipping.

Every single day, I try to draw, and every day since I met your blog, I've trying to learn what makes your art absolutely awesome!! You inspire a LOT. Thank you very much for your drawings <3
awww, thank you SO much for telling me! i was having an anxious day but this makes me so happy…. i hope your day is going well too :]
i’ve been drawing since i could pick up a pencil, but i clearly remember some of the things that inspired me to draw most, and made me consider my techniques from other angles.
some of my biggest inspirations are games like portal 2 and team fortress 2, and animated stuff like looney tunes, darkwing duck, and astro boy. if you enjoy something, be it a movie, book or anything else, let your imagination run wild and study the world and what makes it interesting and unique. the characters you love probably have distinct visual traits like a color theme, strong shape language, or interesting outfit.
i like to think about that kind of stuff all day and apply the things i like about other people’s art to my own characters and stories! see an inking style you love? try to copy it. i personally love the art style of things like sam & max, disco elysium, and grim fandango. these art styles are all strong, stylized, and happen to all take inspiration from the vintage. which i’m obsessed with lol.
i appreciate you saying that my art is awesome, and it makes me smile so big that you want to study it for inspiration 🥹💖 i encourage you to look for the cool art that you love, grab details and techniques from it, and see what you can make.
when i want to design a new robot for example, i think to myself things like “does this robot look like a radio or a dishwasher? how old is it? what color is it and how does it correlate with its personality?” and so on. maybe i see a neat transformer and want my robot to have similar ‘boot’ feet. maybe i see art from flcl and want my robot to have a television-like head. is my robot fast? what if it looked like a motorcycle?
you’ll hear tons of art advice over the years, and you’ll take something good away from all of it, even if sometimes that’s what not to do. the best advice i can give you is to try everything. indulge in what you love, practice what you obsess over, draw what makes you happy.
the worst thing you can do as an artist is think there is a particular way to do anything. go nuts! push poses, experiment with colors, speed up your sketches or jump straight to the painting! no technique is better than any other as long as you’re having fun and making something you like.
i hope you relish every second of your art journey and waste no time worrying about your art from two months ago that looks wonky or ‘bad’ now. remember, if your old art looks bad now, it means you’ve improved and you’re understanding your vision way better now. keep growing and take breaks when needed! just have fun and let’s smile at the canvas!
