Okay so post-Seeing Red reread that comes with reading through Green Arrow 2001, I have 2 new things I've noticed and thought were interesting! This is the first, and the second will be here later on:
Ollie is kinda on his empathy A-game in this one? Like he's being a good dad, a good friend/colleague, it's impressive how much he isn't flying off the handle. I feel like all-in-all post-Mia-HIV-diagnosis, or maybe even post-City Walls, I can't pin down the shift exactly, he becomes much more self-aware in regards to his own temper and emotional shortcomings, and he doesn't like try to change that, but he does start avoiding situations that he knows he won't be able to handle with grace, (which feels like a much more natural progression for him and most characters in general than suddenly getting better and healing and no longer being flawed, but that's just my preference,) and he's doing his best with that in this one. All this to say, he:
keeps the conflict with Bruce to a minimum, except for when he's calling out his parenting style and rightfully upset by the possibility that Bruce only showed up in the first place to lure out Jason, and he and Mia were planned collateral. (It's worth noting that once he critiques Bruce's parenting, Bruce's knee-jerk response is to say pretty much "I know you're being mean and irrational because you're upset, but remember when Roy got addicted to heroin?" which, even disregarding the Roy part, he's kinda chalking any questioning of his parenting style up to Ollie just being upset, when like, that's a very valid critique of the situation. And I think context is added to his critique of Bruce's parenting style by acknowledging that a. that this comes after Bruce calling Jason "dirt in the gutter" and GA responding like "whatever you say," and b. Ollie is canonically aware that somehow, Jason ended up buried in rubble in his last fight with Bruce, meaning he has at least a rudimentary understanding of the Joker showdown (although I can't imagine he knows about the whole ultimatum part.) Several times throughout this run, Ollie alludes to Bruce being a difficult parent (mainly to Dick, via gossip from Roy,) but he doesn't know Jaybin well enough to even recognize him in Heaven, so I think it's entirely possible that when he says Bruce was a bad father to Jason, he's referring not only to Bruce's general closed-off and authoritarian approach to parenting, but specifically to recent, post-resurrection treatment of Jason, (maybe including the blowing up?) which would be VERY interesting.
sends Mia away when he wants to talk one-on-one with Bruce about Jason's turn towards evil! I don't know how I didn't notice this one in my first readthrough, but after she accidentally says something rude about Jason's death and the topic of drug dealing comes up, Ollie asks Mia to talk to one of her contacts about the weapons deal that's going on (and makes a point of praising her in front of Bruce for her network of sources and good information-gathering skills,) and then immediately goes in and tries to press Bruce on how hard it must be to see Jason doing the things he's doing (where Bruce doubles-down on having no residual care towards Jason.) This doesn't mean anything in the larger plot of things, but I think it's really sweet that once she gets embarrassed saying something insensitive, Ollie kinda gives her something to do off to the side so the adults can talk about something personal she'd be out of the loop on. I wonder if part of the reasoning behind sending her away is so she wouldn't be psyched out by the failed sidekick talk and the general idea of a sidekick dying, turning evil (relative to this way he was before,) and consequentially being abandoned (at a surface level,) by his hero parent, as opposed to Bruce's cautionary tale approach to the whole Jason debacle. It happens right when Bruce starts claiming that Jason is like, morally lost. The idea that she would see herself in Jason before the gym fight and Ollie could predict that upsetting her feels like a stretch typing it out, but a very interesting one imo. Either way, it's for the best that Mia wasn't around to hear the "another piece of dirt in the gutter" remark, and Ollie seemed to plan for this.
Gives Bruce run of the case, even before Jason comes into play, just in an effort to be cooperative, and because “he’s visiting." I'm also moderately obsessed with "Try and wear something nice tomorrow!" Like yeah Brucie public appearance, I understand what it actually means, but yelling "wear that dress I like ;)" out into the night is crazyyyy.
Is just so cute with Mia, if there’s one thing Green Arrow 2001 makes Oliver it’s a girldad. That really shines in this storyline. His first reaction to Mia when she escapes/is let out of the gym is “are you hurt? Did he hurt you?” he’s hyping her up, he keeps talking about Bruce’s “wild child” taking “his girl,” he’s actually explaining things about Bruce's m.o. and disposition to her, just being a great father all in all. And not to cornplate, but he makes a little joke about hating pineapple on pizza to some goons and Mia agrees with him pretty close after the Winick issue where she says it’s her favorite to the Teen Titans (another point of contrast with Bruce in the Mia-Jason parallel this storyline centers on: Oliver takes Mia to join the titans specifically so she can have a support system, while Jason was established to interact with them only behind Bruce’s back, under the pretense that he’d be punished for working with them, and dies isolated from his peers) which reads like she’s lying just so she can keep agreeing with her dad?? Mia Dearden cutest of all time! They both eat the pizza anyways...
I'm biased, but I just think it's kinda sweet that he continuously refers to Jason as "kiddo," "this kid," "wild child," etc. Like even mid-fight. idk Ollie acknowledging his actual age just hits, king of actually understanding the parental relationship between a sidekick and the hero who adopts him while Bruce makes a point of referring to both Jason and Mia exclusively as partners, charges, etc. all comic. Like it's ROUGH his direct response to GA calling him a hell of a father is admitting he has failings as a "mentor," both emphasized in quotes and bolded. Jason's wrong in the Mia conversation specifically about their fathers being the same, not because they aren't genuinely disconnected from his and Mia's backgrounds, they are, but because Oliver is a genuinely active parent, unbeknownst to Jason. And it's a leap in logic to think Mia's in the same spot, but with his reference to go off of? It's just a really fucking tough example to work off of, that he's internalized as the standard. But in reality, Ollie's... kinda killing it?
#this shit is moe to me#i love him so much I wasn't kidding guys.#green arrow 2001#oliver queen#green arrow#seeing red#mia dearden#jason todd#dc comics#bruce wayne#I think it's fucked up that Ollie is permanently dubbed a bad dad specifically over a drug psa#(not to say he was a good dad there it was not his finest moment although leaving Roy behind in the first place is worse imo)#while Bruce gets the girldad label for showing Cass a whole new avenue of unhealthy parenting#Mia is THRIVING because Ollie quit being Mayor to be a full-time girldad#LITERALLY! he didn't run again in part so Mia wouldn't get harassed over being HIV-positive or a former SW by tabloids!#I just think he's neat#and for all his flaws one thing that guy is gonna do is try and relate to the youth#honestly his whole thing about child sidekicks is a parenting flex in and of itself#I just love green arrow 2001 in general bro#also I didn't realize that Ollie's whole thing about being guilty with Bruce in UtH was about erasing his memory in identity crisis?#which is understandable because I havent read it#but if you are also confused: that's what it is he erased his memory in order to erase Dr. Light's and feels bad about it#also dirt in the gutter is a fucking insane thing to say#i keep remembering it as trash in the gutter which also isn't good#but specifically the “unclean” connotation associated with the homelessness background both share? Bruce Wayne I have a complaint to raise#thank GOD Mia didn't have to hear that actually#city walls is one of my favorite storylines but I cannot unpack that anytime soon i have like homework and also noting profound to say

The proud look of a boy who finished updating his resume 🥳🥳🥳 that was a trip down memory lane…
Tumblr media
I love this picture bc A) it’s proof that there was a period of time when I did silly things like present seminars and B) it was like the last day of normalcy for a VERY long time. As I was gearing up to give this talk our department head runs in and announces that the first Covid patient had arrived at the hospital we were at. People immediately got up to leave and I tried not to take it personally. Our department head said that starting tomorrow we would be expected to remain home until further notice. To the remaining audience he said “This will be the last in person seminar until things cool down,” and turning to me he said “Let’s make sure it’s a good one!” “No pressure,” I replied.
This picture is from the end of my talk, so it’s the last slide the good people of my department saw before we all went into lockdown and damn if I’m not a little proud of that 🤭

Another fun story from hs German class
First day, the teacher was going over some general rules and stuff. It was popular in my school that to get a class to quiet down one student would raise their hand, then another and another until everyone was silently raising there hands.
“You CANNOT do that” he said. “I don’t want the Dean or someone walking in to A BUNCH OF KIDS RAISING THEIR HANDS WITH A GERMAN FLAG HANGING IN THE BACK OF THE ROOM”
He was my favorite teacher tbh. Hope he’s doing well after 15 years.
STOP HELLO??????? I WOULDVE LOST IT absolutely god speed to him 😭😭😭

Get in loser, we're going vessel shopping!
Tumblr media
Yuji and the gang were exhausted, having just finished exercising a group of curses. It was getting late so they then went to catch a ride back to Jujutsu Tech with Ijichi.
"Man, I'm beat! I had to hit those little fuckers harder than King Dedede's Jet Hammer!"
"Language Kugisaki."
"C'mon Fushiguro, I know you want to hit Gojo sensei as much as I do!"
Before they could continue their conversation, Yuji spoke.
"Is anyone else hearing music?"
Megumi and Nobara stopped. A faint jingle could be heard. Almost as if there was an ice cream truck nearby. But that was impossible. Before Yuji could speak, Kugisaki stopped him.
"No! Do you really think an ice cream truck would be here? In this time of year (fall)? At this time of day? In this part of Tokyo? Localised entirely within the woods?"
"Okay but when you put it like that it sounds bad!"
Suddenly a white van pulled up in the distance. Fushiguro gave a double take and then stated "There's no way I'm going near that thing."
Kugisaki then turned towards Itadori.
"Shouldn't you be going "jinkies!" or is this is the part where your spidey senses forget to activate? Yuji?"
The boy was no longer standing next to her for he had begun running faster than Todo at a Takada chan signing.
"What should we do?"
"I don't know but I'm calling sensei and telling him to bring a dog leash and some Jennifer Laurence magazines."
___________
"Lucky me, I can't believe you guys are open! Anyway I'll take one fudgicle please!"
After paying, an arm reached out and handed him the frozen treat.
"Thank you!"
Yuji was going to peel off the wrapper only to find that there wasn't one.
"That's odd. Oh well, down the hatch!"
It was dark so he couldn't see very well but something was off about his popsicle. After swallowing, he then began to wonder if there was a recall that he should know about because ice cream isn't supposed to be spiky right?
An extra set of eyes then peeled open.
"Fool."
What a moron of a vessel. Sukuna couldn't wait to be free of him. It was then that the window opened.
"I should have figured you had something to do with this."
Inside was totally not Geto, aka Kenjaku, wearing a milk man uniform.
"Hop in Sukuna, let's go to the mall."
"What is your game here?"
"Don't be like that! I figured you would want to join me for some shopping. You know as well as I do that we could use a change of vessels, hm?"
Sukuna grinned and then jumped through the passengers side like in Dukes of Hazard, only the window was rolled up so now he was coated in shards of glass."
Are you feeling alright?"
"Couldn't be better! After all, I'm not the one who's body will be paying for the damage."
Kenjaku then began to drive to the nearest mall. Unfortunately they were now stuck in traffic.
"The sidewalk is wide enough. Go."
"You really haven't changed after a thousand years, huh? All right, just let me put on my mixtape first."
Before Sukuna could ask what that was, he began to hear loud music. It was too loud to hear what the other was saying but he was giving a look that said "Want to watch a massacre unfold?" Sukuna gave a nod and then Kenjaku put the vehicle into to overdrive. Tokyo's poor citizens tried to run for their lives while all one could hear was "Gas, Gas, Gas" by Manuel. They both began to cackle maniacally.
___________
Eventually they made it to the parking lot after leading the police on a wild goose chase.
"So we'll go our separate ways and meet back here in a hour. Don't be late!"
"Fine with me! And it's not exactly like I have all the time in the world, this brats body is on a time limit!"
Sukuna then realized he didn't know where to start.
"Where am I supposed to find the strongest among a crowd of ants? This will prove to be more difficult than I initially thought!"
___________
The first thing Kenjaku did was buy a new set of clothes.
"That last guy had no fashion sense! I'll need to choose more wisely this time."
He looked around until he saw a familiar face.
"No way! Tengen's here too? Alright, change of plans. I'm going to steal her intended vessel before she can make the switch!"
___________
Sukuna was approaching a fitness store when he felt two arms place themselves snuggly around his stomach. He then prayed to Gege and hoped that it better not be who he thought it was. The king of curses then turned his head around to find the culprit. Shit. Why did he always have the worst luck?
"Yorozu... I see the restraining order failed to keep you away..."
"Oh Sukuna, we both know a piece of paper could never get in between the way of our love!"
It took all his willpower to not kill her on the spot.
"...So what are you doing here?""Kenjaku texted me and told me you would be here! It's almost like we're on a date!"
Before he could tell her that no, it was not like a date, she took his arm and began to drag him.
"Unhand me! What are you doing!?"
"What does it look like silly? I'm taking you to Build-a-Bear! It's what all the cute couples are doing!"
"Stop. One, if you were the last woman on earth, I would rather split myself into fingers then and two, I already have plans and I don't need you interfering with them!"
"Aww! Can't I come with you?"
"No! I'm shopping for a new vessel and I don't have time to-"
Yorozu then cut him off
"Wow! Like, you're going to be renting a new body? Let me help! I can help find the perfect choice for you!"
The king of curses scoffed.
"Yeah right! You can't even get your poetry right. How am I supposed to trust you when it comes to good taste?"
"Because if you let me help than I'll stop taking pictures of you when you're not looking."
Yorozu had a massive shrine dedicated to her love with so many creeper shots that her collection put other stalkers to shame.
"Fine. But you're also going to be burning the ones you already took."
"Sure!"
What Sukuna didn't know was that the girl had figured out how to navigate technology far quicker than him, already having stored her files on a two terribyte hard drive.
___________
Kenjaku watched his targets from behind a small potted tree. Once the two had met and started arangments, he knew he had to put his plan into action. Suddenly the speakers could be heard.
"Would Tengen please arrive to the head office - Your powers are being requested by management and there is an emergency - Thank you for your consideration -"
"I'm sorry but you'll need to wait a little longer before assimilating. Just know that your sacrifice won't be in vain."
Kenjaku watched her walk off and then nonchalantly came up beside them.
"Nothing personal kid."
He then twisted their neck causing instant death. Kenny began to drag the corpse with him to the bathroom stall so no one would interrupt him.
"Time to get to work."
___________
Yorozu had taken Sukuna to the food court and was now arguing with the staff.
"Whadda mean you don't serve monkey brains! I'm calling corporate to file a complaint! Let's go dear!"
Sukuna and the worker then shot each other a look of pity. Yorozu was angrily babbling when she bumped into someone.
"Oh, hey Kenjaku. I see you're already finished."
He took off his hat, revealing fresh stitches on his forehead.
"KENJAKU, YOU BASTARD!"
"Gross, what is that! A thumb thumb!?"
"Yo, granny!"
It turns out that it wasn't grandmother willow but Tengen. Or at least it used to be.
"Don't you "hey granny" me! Do you realize what you have done!?"
"Don't look at me like that, can't you just get a new one?"
"You know damn well that that's not how it works! I'm now stuck as this creature for all of eternity!"
Kenjaku waived his hand dismissively.
"Being immortal sounds pretty cool to me. Besides, do you know how irritating it is to constantly hop from one body to another?"
"Didn't ask, plus I don't care!"
Tengen then pulled a glock from underneath her robe and shot Kenjaku at point blank range. He was still alive so she would have to move fast. Tengen then began to unscrew the heads top lid and revealed a brain with teeth. It was hissing and citizens started to take notice. Panic ensued and while the crowd was screaming, Tengen pulled out a jar and plopped the brain into it.
Kenjaku's rabbit teeth tried to chomp through the glass but she quickly sealed it up in a layer of talismans, followed up by flex tape. Tengen was now leaving and Sukuna looked towards his side to find a missing Yorozu.
"Where did she go?! I mean, I'm glad she's gone but what can she be plotting."
He didn't know it but she leapt outside and was laying face first in the grass to study the bugs.
"Well there goes my ride."
Suddenly sirens began to blare."
Shit, it's the cops!"
Sukuna took the chance to switch places with Itadori. When Yuji woke up, he was at the police station and locked in handcuffs.
"Not again! I guess I'll have to use my one phone call on Gojo sensei and ask him to bail me out."
Panic began to set in.
"What was his number again?"
Yuji tried to ask Sukuna but he refused to answer, too amused in the boys misery."
Looks like I'm never eating ice cream again!"

In Other Words: Hold My Hand - Chapter 1
Weee look at me, starting another story when I have so many others left to finish 🙃 To be fair, I started this one a while ago and fully intended to get it off the ground sooner. But, you know, life. So after a sudden burst of creativity and motivation (while caught in throes of my Hux BS), here we are, chapter one ready to be released into the world. Just don't ask me when chapter two will come...
Part One: Hold My Hand
Chapter One
Hux x fem!reader | 2.4k words
Content warnings: Mention of torture/interrogation, mention of childhood abuse
Tumblr media
It was a mystery how you'd ended up in this exact spot you currently found yourself in. The sequence of events themselves were fairly straightforward. There'd been an unexpected skirmish between some First Order troopers and your band of Resistance fighters; you and your best friend Nat had jumped foolishly into the fray despite only just having started your combat training; the Order had unsurprisingly cornered the two of you... and then, in what she probably thought to be a brilliant move, your friend had convinced the troopers you wanted to defect and join the Order. Then there was a week of nasty interrogation to ensure your stories matched up and held true. Somehow you'd both been cleared, and now here you were, standing outside the office of who would be your supervisor aboard The Finalizer, waiting to be summoned in.
What had happened was clear enough. The mystery was understanding why it had all happened. How could there possibly be good in the galaxy when it had devised such a series of unfortunate events to set you down right here, in the thick of all you despised? How could you possibly hope to improve that galaxy from here, or at the least simply benefit your own life? There was a reason espionage and spies weren't used against the First Order - a reason you'd tried repeatedly to explain to your stubborn friend to no avail.
Damn her, you grumbled to yourself, though you knew you didn't fully mean it. Sure, she'd had the idea, but you'd gone along with it. You couldn't make her shoulder all of the blame.
A swooshing sound accompanied the sudden opening of the door in front of you. You stood at attention, coming face to face with a young officer in a smart-looking hat. He clutched a datapad in the crook of his arm as if he were keeping it there on a time-out.
He didn't seem to notice your presence until he had already stepped out of the room and made to follow the hallway to the right. He paused in a second of surprise, and then made a little scoffing noise.
"He's in quite a mood," he said and gave you a knowing look, though you weren't sure what you were supposed to know by it. "Good luck."
He swiftly stalked off, leaving the doorway in front of you open to the office beyond. Fluorescent lights glowed from the ceilings inside, giving you a chance to scope out what you were walking into. Most of the room was bare up here by the door; too bare, like there was supposed to be more furniture but it had disappeared somehow. The back half of the room was more naturally filled. A large bookcase stood tall and proud along the back wall, boasting of thick tomes and unique trinkets. To the side was a low counter with a few liquor bottles and mixers. There was also a small box of some kind in the corner, with a carpeted top and a hole in the side. You weren't sure what it was for.
And placed before all of it, directly in the center, just before the threshold you now found yourself crossing, as if dividing the room between emptiness and warmth, was a large desk made of dark wood and brass furnishings. A lone chair sat in front of it for guests, while the office's owner sat in his own chair on the other side.
Hunched in his chair, was more like it. The position almost could have obscured his identity from you as you tried to get your nerves under control. But alas, the ginger hair still gave him away.
You choked.
"What," he drawled with annoyance, not bothering to look up from the work that occupied him on his desk.
Hux. The General Hux. The face of the First Order and all its terrifying advancements. He was to be your supervisor? What a cruel joke the universe was playing on you.
You stood in shocked silence, which seemed to annoy him further as he huffed and finally looked up. Whatever reproach he was prepared to give vanished as he took in your appearance.
"Who are you?"
You swallowed hard under his gaze. Never in your life did you think you'd come face to face with this man, and now here you were, mere feet away, donning the uniform of his people and completely under his authority.
Oh you were going to kill your friend for this.
"I..." Your throat felt like it was constricting. Panic would soon overtake you if you didn't shake free of its grasp now. As you'd learned in your interrogation, it would not do to show any sign of weakness in this place, not even a bit of hesitancy. And you would need that strategy even more with General Hux watching you.
You cleared your throat quickly and straightened up further. "I believe I am to be your new assistant, sir. They sent me here to report for duty."
Hux regarded you for a moment and then leaned back in his chair with a quirked eyebrow. He didn't seem annoyed anymore, but there was a sort of sneering curiosity that took its place, and you weren't sure which you'd rather be dealing with in this moment.
"Ah, yes. Deserters from the Resistance. I was so surprised by the news, I had to see one of you for myself."
He paused to gauge your reaction, though you didn't have one. You were too preoccupied with keeping yourself standing upright in his presence.
"We don't get many rebels willing to join our ranks. Though when it does happen, it's always right at the moment they have a blaster to their heads. Curious, isn't it?"
You cleared your throat. "I suppose it is, sir."
"You will call me General," he said cooly.
"Yes, General," you obeyed promptly.
He studied you for a moment, no expression on his face to indicate anything he could be thinking. Surely he was suspicious of you; he'd be foolish not to be. And you suspected that's why you were to be his assistant. In case you were a spy of some sort. You'd be in proximity to a tempting amount of good intel, but wouldn't be able to do anything with it under the General's watchful gaze. He was clever one, you'd give him that.
Though what he was considering about you now was beyond you. Maybe he was changing his mind, saw the nerves you were so desperately trying to hide, deciding playing such a game with you wouldn't be worth the trouble.
"I expect an itinerary of the next day's events on my desk each evening by 8," he finally said. He quickly moved through his words as if he'd had to recite them numerous times, and you briefly wondered how many assistants this man had gone through before you finally realized you should probably be paying closer attention. "You will also maintain reports on the health of each department I oversee, filter any feedback or escalated concerns from the department heads, and share only the most important for my attention. You will accompany me to all non-confidential meetings and take down notes...."
He trailed off and sported a small smirk.
"Do you wish to take some down now?"
You quickly nodded, hating how he was already finding ways to subtly undercut your competency.
He opened a drawer and fished out a data pad, handing it over to you and gesturing to the opposite chair, all the while maintaining that smirk. You fiddled with the device and tried to quickly note down what he'd said so far. You could feel him watching you. Your fingers shook from the anxiety of it all.
When you finally looked up at him, his face was back into something more neutral.
"Ready?" he asked softly. You realized he was being patient, an incredible relief to your nerves, so you tried for a smile with your response.
"Yes, General."
He nodded and continued, speaking almost a mile an hour as if through a well-rehearsed speech, and you did your best to keep pace. Your notes were a jumbled mess of various times and tasks, preferences and expectations. You hoped you'd be able to make sense of them later. One missed detail, and you suspected you'd be booted off the ship faster than you could say dank farrick.
"And finally," he said at last, and you couldn't help but let out the breath you'd been holding the past ten minutes, "this may go without saying but I shall state it anyway so we are perfectly clear. You will not be allowed access to outside communications."
He leveled a hard look at you, one that spoke volumes louder than his words.
"I have also waived your right to any leaves of absence. Until you have gained my full and complete trust."
You nodded, suspecting as much.
"And in all transparency, there is not a single soul in this galaxy who has managed to earn my full and complete trust. Do I make myself clear?"
You nodded again, unable to keep his gaze. A part of you was sinking at the thought. You were trapped aboard this ship. No sky, no sea, no trees. Just sterile walls and shiny floors and an endless expanse of empty space behind a viewport. You could very well die here and never feel sand beneath your toes again.
General Hux stood, and you quickly rose to match.
"That said, it will be to our mutual benefit for you to take this position seriously. I run a very tight ship so I expect nothing less than professional excellence from you."
"Yes, sir. General. Sorry. Yes, General."
He gave an almost imperceptible sigh through your flustering. You certainly weren't inspiring any confidence in your ability to do this job, not when you kept remembering how dangerously thin a line you walked here. And though you didn't exactly want to be here, you'd be damned if you were ever thought of as less than good enough.
"You are dismissed." He waved a hand as he sat back down again, his attention already returned to the stack of papers he'd been pouring over before your arrival. You were more than grateful to finally be allowed out of this situation. The emotions you'd been bottling in needed to be let out. You wasted no time in turning on your heel and scurrying away.
"Oh, one more thing," he said just before you could open the door to your freedom. "You'll be given the rank of Second Lieutenant. It means nothing other than to ensure you have proper security clearance to accompany me when needed. You can pick up your badge and insignia at the security office."
This information, as well as all you'd noted down, weighed on you as you finally made it out the door. You walked down the hall in a daze, not knowing where you were going, entirely too fixated on this bizarre situation you found yourself in. You were a Second Lieutenant aboard a First Order ship, serving directly under General Hux, and banned from even so much as glimpsing a life outside of this one. You'd never be able to see your friends or family again. In fact, you'd be helping fight against them now. Whatever service you performed for the General would be in service to the war he waged against your people.
You paused in your wandering to lean against the nearest wall, grateful that whatever part of the ship you were in didn't have much foot traffic. The side of your head rested against the cool steel walls and your eyes closed in a fight against the tears that threatened to burst forth. You focused on your breathing. In and out. In and out. No thinking, no feeling. Just breathe.
You stayed like this an undeterminable amount of time before slowly reopening your eyes and coming back to the present moment. How long the calming effects of your meditation would last, who knew, but at least you were now numb enough to get back to the tasks at hand. You'd need to find the security office. And your room, or bunks, or wherever they intended to have you sleep around here. And perhaps most importantly, you'd need to find your friend.
If not to ensure she was alright, than at least to give her a piece of your mind.

Hux watched as discreetly as he could the disappearing form of the woman who was to be his new assistant. Even after the door slid shut behind her, his gaze still lingered on the spot she had last been.
He'd come to expect timidness from all who found themselves in his presence these days. His reputation had grown quickly and held fast, much to his relief. He still felt like he'd came into this position, this war even, much too quickly to have any real sense of confidence about it. Not that he'd let anyone see, of course, which was why he was grateful he at least had the skill of being able to put on a good show, to mask the insecurities he privately fought. Years of abuse and neglect were to thank for that.
But this woman, this rebel-turned-deserter, was throwing him off. She had been timid, yes, but had also shown all the other telltale signs of someone wanting his approval. Compliance, politeness, even a bit of pride. As if she had been raised in an old Imperial household and came here to work her way up the ladder of power with the rest of them, but still viewing him with a sort of fearful reverence.
It perplexed him. To what end was she here? An honest wish to change sides seemed unlikely, which only left the option of her being a spy. But that didn't fit the facts well, either. As a spy, she'd either be a good actor and show no signs of fear, or she'd be terrible at keeping on a game face and have no tact at all. She displayed both. He didn't know what to make of her.
He sighed, realizing he'd been endlessly ruminating again, and as a result could feel that familiar tension of an oncoming headache in his forehead. He shook himself, as if that would dispel the strain, and tried to focus back on his work.
He'd made her his assistant for a reason, to keep an eye on her, and to an extent her friend. He'd figure out their intentions soon enough, he'd just need to interact with her more.

Medieval music isn’t my favorite to listen to, but it is fascinating to study it and see music notation evolve from nondescript mnemonic devices to an early form of present-day notation
