Modern AU where Aleksander is a former child prodigy, now accomplished doctor, very committed to finding the cure for a disease purposefully manufactured by some government. Ambitious, driven, focused, proud, intense, 'wanting makes us weak'. Hates the hold the government has on the medicine sector and their various corrupt and greedy actions.
Baghra: retired doctor, a former child prodigy even more gifted than Aleksander initially but not as driven, has given up on the politics side of medicine, is now a professor.
After a good while of trying and failing and losing people, he resorts to means like unethical human experimentation for his research (children are not exempt). His other crimes include purposefully targeting the responsible government officials and their families (sometimes by targeting the whole neighborhood in the process) and infecting them with said disease. Both as revenge and to pressurize them to disclose information about the virus and its creation to him.
Alina Starkov: a child prodigy who has potential but hasn't achieved anything peculiar as her main dreams involve her doing well enough for herself to have a good, happy, fulfilled life. She has impostor syndrome due to a past abusive and not emotionally available foster mother, is not particularly ambitious, is insecure, constantly feels not good enough. Due to her capabilities and perfect scores, she is hired by the said government to work on their own cure. She is told all that they know about the virus now but she also figures out their evil agenda to monopolize the cure of this disease they created making them endlessly rich and powerful.
She is then approached by Aleksander, enigma in the field of medicine, as he wants to use her knowledge of the virus and her position for finding his own cure. She later finds that his goals also include keeping the cure from the said government and controlling its supply to them to get them under his control, he is willing to resort to infecting a town's water supply where most of the officials live and not offering them the cure until they comply with his demands and loosen their hold on the medicine sector and of the various medicines they have already monopolized.
Alina wants to release the cure without a patent and has no political drive. She disagrees with his means and doesn't think that giving him such control over the government and thereby over the country is a good idea even though she herself wants to get rid of the government. She learns about another resistance secret agency led by Nikolai Lantsov, the son of the government head, also in politics, who claims to want to better the country, and is asked to join.
Aleksander felt jealous that she was handed the information he has been so desperately trying for on a silver plate even though he considers himself a lot more capable than her. He feels both understood and misunderstood by her. His opinion changes from 'Alina doesn't deserve all that she has yet, this is a cruel joke by the fates and he would mould her to be capable while keeping her under his control' to 'she is in fact capable and a worthy opponent (more worthy at least than anyone else in this world)'.
He also somewhere wants to be remembered as the person who spent almost every waking moment of his life working for his people and gave up all of life's joys for the same. He doesn't regret his actions. He thinks his end motives justify his means.

“You shouldn’t self-ID as ADHD/autistic, you’re turning a very real mental condition into a trend” Ok then stop saying delulu. Stop speculating on which cluster C personality disorder the criminals you hear about on the news have. Stop saying “schizoposting” and “acoustic” and “is it restarted?” Stop using “psycopath” and “sociopath” as catch-all ways of calling someone a bad person. Stop saying “the intrusive thoughts won” when you bleach your hair and then turn your nose up at people who suffer from very real, very scary urges of physical/sexual violence. Stop saying “I’m so OCD” as a way of calling yourself neat. Stop treating BPD/ASPD/Bipolar as inherently abusive. Stop saying “OP I am living in your walls” without tagging for unreality. Stop diagnosing complete strangers you’ve never met on r/AITA with NPD.
You first. If you don’t want our disabilities to be treated like trends then stop belittling and minimising them. I’ll NEVER judge a person for trying find labels for their symptoms when an apathetic, racist, sexist, ableist healthcare system refuses to. But I will absolutely judge a hypocrite. Which a lot of you are

it's such a bummer that losing control of your emotions only makes the entire situation worse in really embarrassing personal ways. losing control of my emotions should give me pyrokinesis.
