Well how’s this for a #FBF? While clearing out my desk, I found the offer letter that brought me here in the first place, 12 years and six months ago almost to the day. I’m leaving only to make a lateral jump to a new job, and everyone I work with in close proximity is going with me, but as I look at my empty corner it still feels monumental. It’s been a very pleasant 12.5 years, all things considered — one that gave me both the time and the resources to do more things than I can count that I’d once thought were beyond my means and possibilities. "Ever since I was young, I’ve heard songs. From family: mom, dad, brothers, cousins; uncles, who weren’t actually related; and alike. I would sit at the piano bench with my legs dangling straight downward, and I played until I heard something off. I would stop, re-situate, and continue from the beginning. I never liked to miss a note. Starting fresh always seemed a defeat - a reminder of why I had to wash the slate clean. Soon came slowly. Though, soon I was able to press the pedals. Three of them there were. I had no idea what the center one did, and no great use for the left. I enjoyed playing as loud as I felt like. Which, would mean leaving the left alone, unless for a special occasion that the day issued. No longer tippy toes on the pedal. Excited I sat, having to exert no more pressure than that of the brain. I took this to be the first day of womanhood. No longer a child, I thought. I still think back to that moment; fondly sometimes, and sorrowfully most. If I had known, I wouldn’t have stayed cooped up in the living room staring at the white and blacks. The white of the paint, and the black where it had chipped. The white of the keys that encompass the whole of the board, and the black of the keys that timidly refrain. The white of my pale hands, and the black of my eyelids when I was too tired, or too frustrated in my lack of creativity. I was taught by my family, but there’s only so much they could teach. After the disease took over, that is what was left. The white and blacks. Not all the time, but enough. Sometimes there is a fantastic showing of splayed colours and hues; however, I spent most of my time inside - only a handful of moments looking at the sunrise. This is when I’m awake, of course. Dreams are different. Something to look forward to, and in the same breath, dread.

Letters From the Heart. #writerprompts  I had found a letter once, laying on the ground in the street. Me, being the read everything person that I am, picked it up and read it. I couldn’t tell who it was written to or who was the writer so to me it was from and to a total stranger. I didn’t feel I was invading the privacy of someone I knew but rather reading a short story found in the universe.  Yeah, I read it.  I took it up to my loft. I made a fresh coffee and I sat down on the floor in the afternoon sunshine streaming in my eleven windows.  It was an I’m Sorry letter after a young lovers (obviously very young from the reading) quarrel. Maybe even a forever break up. Sample Letter to Tell People That you’ve Changed your Name

At first, the letter was stamped with ‘Return to Sender’ with a note that Felix was listed as missing. It would later be confirmed that he was deceased as the additional notation on the envelope indicates. 

This letter was a crusher to read and I haven’t looked much further into the rest of the story but I’ll share whatever I learn and in the interim I’m thinking we’d all do well to grab some blackberry jam and just dig on that as some grateful meditation appreciating that we’re still allowed to have moments like that.

UPDATE: A quick search returns plenty of info about Felix’s death. He was one of six sons in the family to wear the uniform of the United States in World War II and was one of three to lose their lives in the service.
