This old place was most certainly not built with safety in mind!

You make your way back to the lounge above. Wind whistles under a doorway, making a tortured groaning sound as you walk past it. Danica is sitting at the low coffee table by the fireplace right where you left her, looking at something on her phone. In front of her are two clean glasses. She looks up as she sees you approaching and flashes you a smile.

“You were gone a while,” she says, reclining into the cracked leather of her chair. “I was starting to think I should call mountain rescue or something.”

You laugh as you sit back down in a similarly decrepit chair with worn brocade upholstery. Behind you, a crumbling sound as a piece of firewood falls apart and the flames dip slightly lower. “Do they rescue people from caves too? Because they’d need specialist gear down there.”

“I don’t think there are many options for emergency services out in a place like this,” she shrugs. “So let’s see then! What treasures did you dig up?”

You place the old bottle on the table, still thick with dust.

Danica replies by giving you a scathing look which you take to mean ‘obviously, fool.’ You walk over to the nearby bar and return with a bowl of water and some paper towels and the two of you swab the bottle down, removing as much of the encrusted grime as you can. Underneath, the bottle has a strange sheen, with a slightly purplish hue. As you look at it, you catch a brief opalescent shimmer cross the glass. The label is yellowed and its derelict condition was not helped by the swabbing, but it still appears legible. Or at least, it would be legible if you could read it.

“Do you know what language this even is?” you ask.

“No clue,” Danica scratches her brow.

You look at the label closely. The writing is made of bold glyphs with strangely graceful curves and sharp angles. It’s like no script you’ve ever seen before. You could almost imagine it carved into a clay tablet you might see in a museum.

“Should we really open this?” you ask, looking at it with the kind of reverence a palaeontologist might reserve for a freshly excavated dinosaur skull.

Danica shrugs and stares at the two empty glasses. “I finished my last drink half an hour ago.”

You break a wax seal off the top of the bottle, and work a corkscrew into an ancient cork, hoping it doesn’t break apart as you do so. At first it’s stuck fast, and takes a little coaxing to pull out. Carefully, you ease it up and out and with a loud pop, you finally free the cork. As you pull the cork from the bottle, your ears catch the sound of... whispering voices?

You frown. “Did you hear that?” you ask.

“Hear what?”

“I thought I heard something.”

“Wind in the chimney, maybe?” Danica glances over at the fire. Only a few flames remain on the dwindling firewood.

You nod. That must be it. Old buildings like this are full of strange sounds. You lift the bottle, which seems somehow even heavier now, and carefully pour some into the two glasses.

Danica lifts her glass and inspects it, raising an eyebrow. “Weird,” she says.

You look at yours. Is it just because of the dim firelight, or is it strangely dark? Lifting it, you catch the fragrance of raspberries and old oak barrels. You hold it up in front of the fireplace, but you can’t see a hint of light passing through it. It absorbs all the light, appearing almost blacker than black,

You look over to Danica. You meet her eyes and she grins. You raise your glass. “Cheers,” you say.

“Cheers,” she clinks her glass to yours. “Here’s to the strangest and most remote hotel I’ve ever stayed in!”

“And the creepy jagged mountains outside!” you laugh.

You take a sip from the glass. It certainly tastes like wine. A warm flavour, with flavours of roses, blackberries, and the feeling of being wrapped in a warm blanket on a cold winter evening after stepping inside out of the wind. Wait, how do you know what that tastes like? You look up at Danica.

She looks back at you, her mouth open in surprise. “This tastes like,” she fumbles for words, “like waking up refreshed on a Saturday morning and having no reason to get out of bed.”

You almost laugh, but the serious look on her face stops you from doing so. You look into your glass. You think you see a brief opalescent shimmer run across the surface of it. You tentatively take another sip and taste a relaxing walk through a rose garden, with a lover, on a warm summer evening. You blink, taken aback.

The two of you sit together quietly, sipping from your glasses, enjoying the flavours of warm, soothing feelings in the black wine. You barely exchange words with each other, but it almost feels like you don’t need to. Once or twice, you’re almost certain that the two of you must have tasted the same... experience? Memory? You’re not even sure.

As you finish your glass, you glance over your shoulder at the fireplace. The last flames have died away now, leaving only glowing red embers. “Do you think we should tend the fire?” you ask.

You look over to Danica. You meet her eyes and a brief opalescent shimmer crosses her irises. “Don’t worry,” she says. “I’ll take care of that.” She casts her gaze at the fireplace and it immediately erupts into flames, casting a soothing glow throughout the room.

You look at the fire, and then slowly, bemusedly, you look back over at Danica.

She gives you a warm smile. “Shall we have another glass?” she asks.

How to Make a Wax Tablet

For use in spellwork; curse tablets in particular. Note that a ready made set can be found online for roughly $20. However, beeswax can be found readily in most craft stores for $6-10 and have many, many uses.

Materials

A photo frame, ideally 8x11" to allow for more writing space

Beesewax, shaved, chopped, or in pellet form

Oil - linseed is more historically accurate but olive or coconut will do. The oil makes the wax soft enough to write on and scrape it to re-use.

Hot glue, epoxy pen, or any other precision sealant (more on this below)

Colorant (optional) such as food, candle, or soap dye

Method

Determine amount of beeswax and oil required. You could eyeball it but if you want to be more precise, determine the volume (length × width x depth) of the frame's resevoir. You can then plug it into this online calculator to determine how much beeswax by weight you'll need. Then measure out between 10-15% of that weight in oil.

Prepare the frame. Remove the glass (save for another craft) and seal the corners on the inside using tape, a tiny bit of hot glue, or an epoxy pen - whatever will work to prevent the wax from leaking out while it's in liquid form.

Ensure that the frame is level for pouring. Many frames have a fold out stand on the back that will prevent it from laying flat. Keep this in mind and try to prepare it now so the wax dries evenly, rather than fiddle with it later while juggling hot containers.

Melt the wax. I tend to scorch things in the microwave so I prefer the double boiler method. Place wax into a heat safe container, then insert the container into a pot of boiling water. Beeswax has a melting point of 144 to 147 °F (62 to 64 °C) - much higher than, say, coconut oil (76 °F/24 °C). So melt the beeswax nearly completely first then add oil. Stir to combine. Add any coloring if using.

Pour into the frame. IMPORTANT: do NOT let any water get into your wax. It will cause it to bubble and crack. Allow it to cool completely before using.

Bonus ideas:

Select a dye color that is significant to your intended task

Use oil infused with associated herbs or plants

Add essential oils for the same reason, and also for a pleasant scent (myrrh fragrance, perhaps, for attracting the attention of Hekate?)

Consider adding other ingredients that were also used for magical inks such as incense ash, powdered buckthorn or wormwood, etc.

Iron Oxides: Natural oxides of iron (iron combined with oxygen); pigments are used to enhance colors in cosmetics.

Cyclopentasiloxane: Lightweight silicone with a silky, slippery feel that functions as a skin/hair conditioning agent.

Acrylates Copolymer: A stabilizer mostly used in styling products to set the hair, add body, and protect it from humidity. It possesses a multitude of functions and can work as a film forming agent, hair fixative agent, suspending agent and antistatic agent. Phenoxyethanol: A glycol ether and bactericide (that functions as a disinfectant, antiseptic or antibiotic) that is primarily used as a preservative. It is also seen as a fragrance additive.

Aminomethyl Propanediol: Used to adjust pH in cosmetics.

Panthenol: Member of the B complex family of vitamins. A moisturizing humectant and emollient.

Polyvinyl Alcohol: A synthetic polymer of vinyl alcohol that functions in cosmetics as a gel-based thickener, film-forming, and binding agent. Used quite a bit in peel-off facial masks, this type of alcohol may pose a risk of aggravating skin unless combined with other ingredients that offset this potential, such as glycerin, emollients, or other skin-repairing ingredients.

VP/VA Copolymer: A film former. Has the ability to inhibit the hair (or lashes) from absorbing moisture; it dries and forms a thin barrier on hair, nails or skin. When used in hair care products, it allows hair to hold a style longer by preventing moisture from entering the hair shaft. VP/VA Copolymer is also used to hold together the ingredients of a compressed tablet or cake and helps to distribute or to suspend an insoluble solid in a liquid. Also used as viscosity builders of water-based and oil-based types of products.

Polyquaternium-10: Conditioning, moisturizing, anti-static agent. A water soluble, white granulated powder. It is also considered a film former, supplying a sheen and coating to hair strands by easily being absorbed by proteins. 

Ethylhexylglycerin: A synthetic skin-softening agent also used as a preservative, a carrier, or suspending agent for other preservatives such as phenoxyethanol.

Hydrogenated Olive Oil Stearyl Esters: Acts as an emulsion stabilizer and hair and skin conditioning agent. It considerably facilitates the application of a cosmetic product and at the same time provides the skin with outstanding emollience, softness and a fine silky touch at the time of application. It is also important to mention that it does not leave a greasy finish since it is present in the product in a very low proportion.

Acrylates/Ethylhexyl Acrylate Copolymer: Film Former

Copernicia Cerifera Wax: Natural, hard wax obtained from the leaves of palm trees. Used primarily as a thickening agent, but also has film-forming and absorbent properties.

Laureth-21: Surfactants, cleansing agents, emulsifiers and solubilizers.

My Thoughts: I received Sephora Collection LashCraft Length & Volume Mascara in my February 2017 Play! by Sephora box. I was really excited to try the mascara since it had a uniquely shaped brush. It best described as a paddle shape brush. I use the flat paddle side first basically to coat all my lashes with the formula which it also lengths it. I take the comb side to separate the lashes from root to tip. Than I use the comb on the tips to lift and curl the lash. The end results is long and lush lashes.

What really sucks is that Sephora Collection LashCraft Length & Volume Mascara formula goes bad very quickly once I opened the mascara. I was only able to use it twice in its prime before it went south. The formula tends to get very stringy and clumpy. Mostly likely due to the Nylon formula. It completely destroys the brush as well, but just the comb side, it tends to get clumped together. Which is bad for application because I can’t separate the lashes. I always end up with fallout during application and after, its a big mess and annoying. On the brighter side regardless of how old the formula is, its super easy and painless to remove. It can even be removed with just water, however I don’t use this method since not all my makeup can be removed with water. But the best part is I never wakeup with raccoon eyes the next morning thats how easy the removal process is.

Would I purchase Sephora Collection LashCraft Length & Volume Mascara? No the formula is terrible its gets old way too quickly even for the cheap price point.
