A-T-3 191 Africa Oyé - two disco tracks from South Africa
It's Africa Oyé weekend in Liverpool. The weather has been beautiful all week but today is overcast... gutted!
Picnicing by Starlight appeared on Soundway's Gumba Fire comp in 2018 and Startlight's only album was reissued earlier this year. Starlight were South African production duo of Emil Zoghby and John Galanakis
youtube
Manyane - Thabong (Frankie Francis Bubblegum Dub) - This was put out by the same label as the track above. This edit was put out by Soundway on the 12" EP Heads Records: South African Disco Dub Edits in 2018. The original instrumental pitch down to -8 had become a cosmic fave

A comprehensive list of Fusebox staff members and projects to support instead of Matchmaker or S4~
With S4 coming out on a seperate app and Fusebox continuing to insist their “””codevelopment””” model is just as good, I wanted to update this list with the people who made LITG the game that we love. People marked with asterisks are still looking for work/self employed, so if you can support their past and current projects it’s more important for them.
If you're looking for information on what happened, click my tag 'fusebox layoffs' on this post
Please let me know if I’m missing anyone/projects to link
This little project devolved into me playing demos, reading work, listening to multiple podcasts, and enjoying their indie content in earnest. It introduced me to so many new IF adjacent things, some of which I’m still enjoying playing. I highly recommend going down the rabbit hole.
Writers
Andrea D’Acunzo: twitter | website | working with Quantum Soup Studios who have a stealth/puzzle PC game out with this beautiful art style
**Anna Winterstein: twitter | website |  She has a ton of small game demos, but my favorite is her short story The Colors of Sand. Fantasy gaysssss. It looks like she’s currently working with 3ofCups and/or Electric Square, but she’s got a ton of small art projects to support on her website
Ben Kaestner-Frenchman: twitter | Just super fun to follow and his WIP novel looks super interesting, I’m not sure if there’s much to do to support it at this point but *eyes emoji*, He’s also currently working with Electric Square
**Ben Sabin: twitter | website | Again, another fun twitter follow (can’t convince me to get twitter lmfao)
Carles Salas: linkedin | he’s currently working with Neon Play, who have a bunch of idle games on the app store
**Chavonne Brown: twitter | website | One of the more active projects I found was the ttrpg game Daemonologie which I have not played but might pick up if I make friends lmfao | He’s also an editor at Fiyah Magazine and I haven’t purchases any of their editions yet but it’s sci fi and fantasy short stories so I definitely need to
**Courtney Byrne: twitter | website | The poetry fragments on their website were uh.... steamy
Daniel Nicholson-Coombes: twitter | website | He designs logos if anyone’s in the market, also he’s working with Dlala studios  who are working on an arcade/smash type xbox game
David Evans: linkedin | Working with Netspeak Games on Sunshine Days (my beloved)
Ed Sibley: twitter | He’s working with Netspeak games and they’ve released Sunshine Days which I downloaded from a tumblr ad before realizing he was involved lmao. It’s reminiscent of animal crossing/stardew/every mmo from the 2010s and I’m really enjoying it
**Eir Causey: twitter | website | Actively job searching!!
Elizabeth Smyth: twitter | website | her spooky games are free to play, super interesting, and well written as shit. It gives me TMA vibes. She’s got a bunch of short twines linked to her twitter and I’m kinda obsessed with her
Fiona Sangster: twitter | medium short stories | Here’s a link to her horror  game demos, not really my cup of tea but if you like first person survival games or undertale adjacent gameplay mechanics maybe you’ll dig them! She also has a bunch of short stories you can check out
Fred Francis: twitter
Frankie Wakefield-Harrey: twitter | looks like she’s freelancing and currently working with Terrible Posture Games, if I had a Nintendo Switch I would 100% buy their game 3 out of 10
Hannah Powell-Smith: twitter |  patreon | Buy!!! Their text based game Creme de la creme!! (or download it on the app store, the first three chapters are free) I bought it purely out of reparations for the money I’ve spent on gems for LITG and while I’ve only got through four chapters so far I’m enjoying it. Scratches my dark academia/royalcore itch. They also wrote one called Blood Money which is about half the length but not really my cup of tea because it’s a mafia AU but maybe you’re into that! It has really good reviews on the app store!
**Heidi McDonald: twitter | The best ongoing project I can find is the book chapters she’s written about video game development and a book about sexuality in gaming. If you’re interested in that, check her books out. Actively job searching!!
Ian Michael Waddell: twitter | podcast | He has a huge backlog of work but my fave is the text based game and his podcast. I’ve started listening and am? Enjoying it more than I thought I would? They review a bunch of IF games that were made specifically for one IF competition and it’s been fun to get recs. They’ve got 8 episodes, and they’re all about an hour a piece which is *chefs kiss* I lowkey judged and played all the games submitted for 2021 and was really excited that this introduced me to it
Ines Robin: twitter | artstation She’s taking commissions for portraits through DMs, and seems to have a new project in the works
**Kaj Jensen: website
Leah Muwanga-Magoye: instagram | website
Leigh Alexander: twitter | website | She’s got a TON of really cool articles about sci fi concepts intermingled with activism and is a writer with Reigns and also an odd blog that seems like it’d be super well suited to be on tumblr
Lizzie Huxley-Jones: twitter | website | books | They have a rec list on their website of books with autistic representation, and I’ve read one of them already, added some others to my to-read list.
Luke Duffy: twitter | portfolio/website He’s working with Frontier Games now, and they make some really mainstream titles like Roller Coaster Tycoon and Jurassic World. Good for him.
M. Vittoria Patti: twitter | I can’t bring myself to download it, but she now works for Football Manager the game if you’re into sports game, consider playing!
**Maria Callas: twitter
Nathanael Yau: linkedin | if you have more media for him hmu
Rhea Newton: twitter | They’re working with Tributary games so keep an eye out for new content from them- it looks like it’s going to be narrative based and their art style is super cool
Sarah ‘SJ’ Longthorne: twitter | website | Now working with SumoDigital and their game Hood: Outlaws and Legends. If you’re into console or PC gaming, maybe try it out
Seema Iyer: twitter | website
Artists
Dan Fiddis: Art Portfolio
David Galopim: instagram | He’s working with the app Puzzle Heist now. If you like empire building games like Clash of Clans or Game of Sultans, you’ll love this. The characters do look DOPE af, but the story is a bit lacking and the Match 3/Best Fiends format burnt me out pretty fast. I did play for a couple months, so it’s good enough for that.
Katie Jackson: art portfolio
Leda Chung: twitter | She’s now working with Tripledot Studio. I played Word Hop for a couple of days and enjoyed it, a lot of their games are bubblepop/solitaire/brain teaser kind of thing, so if you like that support them. It looks like they might be working on a Match 3 ala Lily’s Garden or Homescape?
Paul Alexandrescu: art portfolio
Pedro Alves: twitter
Music
Lauren Middleton: Buisness Facebook | fiverr  | instagram | portfolio | soundcloud She’ll compose music for video game and adjacent projects through fiverr, and just has a lot of samples uploaded for listening
Engineers/Product Data
Alice Cheng: I can’t find any public facing social media for her, but it looks like she’s working with Marmalade Games now, and they do a lot of board gamey type apps in you’re interested in that.
Anita Ghoddoomi-Zadeh: Again no public networking (which makes sense), but she’s currently working with Space Ape Games, which chiefly seems to make an arcade/tapping music app.
Ariane Sivam: I can’t find any social media, but I did find a podcast episode (and have since listened to the entire podcast, highly rec!) where she talks about why LGBTQ+ stories are so important to tell through mobile games *eyeball emojis* It’s episode 6, not sure if the link worked correctly
Dave Lewis: twitter
Joshua Samuels: twitter
Robert Bateman: twitter
Customer Support (show them some love because some of yall were ANNOYING with that ‘Help’ button
Shelley Coates: twitter |
Teri Murkin: instagram | twitch | patreon | podcast (guest star) | not that it matters but the fact that yall were spamming her with frustration about S3′s LIs through the support feature, when she was this interesting and creative all along? a crime.

Hello! I would like to rec the amazing @juletheghoul!! Her fics have really gotten me through it the last year and here are my favs.
Oblivius: This fic lives rent free in my brain. I think about Francis and Spills on a regular basis. It’s just so good. Best friends since high school who are too scared to give into their feelings and then Frankie gets engaged to someone else and it’s top tier. Highly recommend.
Paradisum: This story is what introduced me to Jules. It’s Priest!Marcus Pike and it starts out just straight up smut but then evolves and it’s so satisfying. I love these two and how their relationship grows. I’ve also read this series an embarrassing amount of times, Father Marcus can get it.
Domum: Max Phillips and a witch!reader. This story is just so wonderful and really pulls you in, and my goodness, the smutty one shots are 🔥🔥🔥 Like 1000/10 do recommend.
Silk: Mob Boss Din Djarin, like my god. This man. I LOVE HIM. The way he protects his family?? How intense he is?? It’s so good, and also another story where there’s an evolving relationship that’s just so fucking good.
Honestly, all of Jules fics are incredible. She has a way of pulling you in, and keeping you immersed, and it’s just a good time. She just started a fic called The Huntsman that’s like epic fairytale vibes but reader is a badass witch, and I’m already hooked. 1,000,000/10 recommend checking out her masterlist!

101 things immortals do: laundry
Things have been pretty busy this week and I haven't had time to sit down and edit the thing I wrote on Friday's Writers Club session till today.
The prompts were: ghost, vampire, full moon
And the additional challenge was to write a story without using the prompt words above.
This piece was written to: Maniac — Phoebe Green Chamber of Reflection — Mac DeMarco
Tumblr media
Photo by Oli Woodman on Unsplash
Francis sits staring at the hypnotic spin cycle on the laundromat's washing machine.
The soothing synths and Mac DeMarco's crooning voice blesses his ears, drowning out the whirring of the spin cycle. His eyes watch the choppy soap water as his clothes are tumbled about in the washing machine.
Outside the streets are quiet save for the occasional passing car under the moonlight, a night traveller like Francis himself probably.
His phone vibrates and Francis pulls it out of his pocket.
'Blood run tonight, yes?'
It's Mavis. The young excitable one that he has somehow managed to pick up over the years. They were the worst kinds always demanding for some sort of attention. They think this is all a game.
But Mavis is, thankfully, different from the rest. Francis admires her for her wide-eyed wonder towards this secret night life, that's the only reason he lets Mavis hang around him and the old house on the corner of the street.
Mavis, unlike most younglings, doesn't kill for sport. She has a bit of finesse choosing instead to treat the task of procuring dinner like a heist for some precious jewels. Most times it's like she's pretending to be double-o-seven, if the latter were immortal, sported deathly sharp incisors as their only weapon and moves in the blink of an eye.
The wonder of all those fascinating changes and abilities have long since worn out for Francis.
He is old. Older than most in the coven this side of town.
Yet Francis looks not a day over thirty with his long blond hair still luscious as it was when he attended one of the Sun King's balls and was commended for not wearing a wig.
A perfect portrait of eternal youth, many would die for that.
'Francis u there?'
'Are we going or not?'
'Not.'
'Not tonight for me anyway.'
There's a sad emoji from Mavis and it sparks in Francis the need to apologise.
'Sorry,' he replies.
'It's cool!'
'Shall i bring some back fr u then?'
'Sure.'
Mavis sends a smiley and that's that.
Francis leans his head back against the wall. His mood changing along with the melancholic tune of the song that follows after.
It feels as though he is drowning in the rhythmic sea of drumbeats and electric guitars.
Lately he's been wondering if there is more to eternity than just living the routine life while learning how to use all the latest gadgets. He'd gone from flintlock pistols to sniper rifles. From candlelight to electric bulbs. Hand delivered messages to these instant text messages.
He feels he’s already seen it all.
What more can there be?
Does he want to wait until space travel is normalised and teleporting to work becomes a thing?
It doesn't sound too bad really. Francis has always been curious about the workings of technology. But it's always the waiting that hurts, the endless waiting and watching as the years pass him by.
This city has gotten boring for him now and perhaps it's time for him to move on before Mavis or any of the others get more attached than they already are.
Just then the lights in the laundromat flicker and the room feels colder now than it was before.
Francis cracks a smirk.
It would seem the laundromat's resident ghost warrior has returned.
"Evenin’ Frankie."
"Garrick," Francis greets as he puts his song on pause and takes out his AirPods dropping them into his pocket without even returning them to the case. "You’re later than usual. What’ve you been up to?"
The translucent figure of Garrick — a warrior from a bygone age from the looks of his tunic, hose pants and fur-lined mantle — shrugs a shoulder, his translucent image shimmering with the movement.
"Oh this and that, haunting the graveyard and spooking out the young ones that go there to fornicate over graves and what not," Garrick replies sarcasm heavy in his voice.
"Uh huh, so what did you really do?"
"I sat in on a late night movie about a haunted house, if you must know. I find it quite offensive that they portray ghosts as malevolent things who are unwilling to leave the home they're in," Garrick complains, "Just because someone's in the house it doesn’t mean that they don't want to leave. I certainly didn’t ask to be here way past when my body’s turned to dust," Garrick scoffs, "It’s no fun at all."
"Hey you get to walk through walls and get things for free all the time. Don't complain about that," Francis retorts, "I still have to pay for things all the time. Which means having to work or sell off my antique collections, something which I'm very reluctant to do."
"And that is bad?" Garrick asks with a frown, "The mere sight of me makes people run, and I'd rather they didn't."
"I only wish people would run away from me," Francis replies, "then I wouldn’t have to worry."
"Is your fangclub bothering you again?" Garrick asks as he floats over to take a seat beside Francis.
It gets considerably colder to his left now and Francis scowls at the spectral figure, "You know I hate when you say that."
"Say what, fangclub?" Garrick asks with a laugh.
"It’s a coven," Francis corrects, "And if you like people so much why don’t you join a ghost club or something?"
"There's no such thing as a ghost club. One that supports the convening of ghosts instead of the hunting of them anyway."
"Perhaps you haven't looked hard enough."
"Perhaps," Garrick replies.
The washing machine whirs loudly now as it moves onto the spin cycle, draining the water from the clothes.
Francis watches once more, hypnotised by the sopping wet clothes being spun dry.
"And what have you, been up to, Frankie?"
"Living," Francis replies. The word sounds funny on his lips, "Though I wouldn't really call it living if you've been dead for several centuries now, would you?"
"You think you've got it bad?" Garrick asks, "At least you can feel things, touch things...meanwhile..."
Garrick floats over to stand in the middle of the whirring spin cycle machine to demonstrate.
"Imagine this, for more centuries than you, I might add."
The machine seemed to spin faster whirring extremely loudly as if possessed, which it probably was, seeing as Garrick was standing quite literally inside it with his translucent torso visible through the door of the front-load washing machine.
"You've proven your point now get out of my machine, Garrick," Francis scolds as he gets to his feet half ready to pull the spectral figure out of the rattling washing machine.
"Don't worry you won't get any of my spectral dust on your clothes," Garrick laughs as he floats away from the washing machine. Almost immediately, the machine quietens down, returning to normal on the spin cycle.
"Try that again and I'll take my clothes elsewhere to wash," Francis says as he settles back down in the chair opposite his machine.
"Where will you go? There isn't another laundromat for miles."
"Another country maybe," Francis replies, "You see...I've...lost interest in living here," he finds himself admitting.
"What will you tell your...coven..." Garrick asks when Francis fixes him with a narrow-eyed glare as if daring him to use the word 'fangclub' again.
Francis shrugs, "That I'm bored. That I want to move away from here. I'm not sure yet."
"And if any of them ask to join you?"
"I'd tell them not to."
"You are not a people person are you, Frankie?"
"I've never been and I probably never will be," Francis replies as he pushes to his feet once the machine begins to beep.
"Where will you go?" Garrick asks as he watches Francis transfer the clothes from the washer to one of the empty tumble driers down the line.
"Somewhere sunny and bright where it doesn't rain every day?" Francis replies, as he digs around in his pocket for spare change and comes up with a five dollar note instead.
"That sounds nice," Garrick replies as he follows Francis to the coin machine, "New country, clean slate. You can start over where no one knows you."
"That's the idea," Francis says as he collects the coins and goes back over to the tumble dryer, slotting in the coins. Francis Bellmonde, professor in history, specialising in the 18th century.
Garrick chuckles “yeah I like the sound of that”
I know me too my only worry is if they start asking me how I knew the sun king and what not. Or what if I let slip that I fought in the revolution. Then the secrets out of the bag.
After a pause Garrick asks, "You sure you won't miss anyone once you're all alone in a foreign city?"
The idea of missing someone is foreign to Francis. He's never stayed in a place long enough to find people to miss. Yet, now he has Mavis and the other younglings to look after and Garrick the ghost at the laundromat that he meets every other night. They were beings like him, in a way. Though they didn't share his spiralling dark thoughts and edgy melancholia. They were immortal, unending, undying like him.
"I don't know," Francis replies as he shifts into the new seat in front of the tumble dryer. "Mavis is old enough to survive on her own. Old enough to lead the fangclub if she wants to," he says using Garrick's term. "And you, well, you'll find another person who can see you, I'm sure."
"That's where you're wrong because the humans scare easily. They'll be running for the hills before they even decide to strike up a conversation," Garrick replies, "You on the other hand were different. I remember how completely unfazed you were when met with a terrifying spectre."
"You're not as terrifying as you think," Francis admits, "Then again, I suppose this lack of fear comes with age and my morbid curiosity of the afterlife."
"Maybe if you let me join you in your travels, I might enlighten you," Garrick offers.
"You're kidding," Francis replies as he stares at the spectral figure floating in front of the tumble dryer.
"I am being very serious," Garrick replies, "I think travelling away from here would be very nice. I don't think I've ever left this country to begin with."
"Can you do that?" Francis asks, "Leave the country that is?," he continues, "Aren't all ghosts tied to things in their surroundings?"
"I suppose we'll find out," Garrick replies, "That is, if you will let me join you."
"I'm not a people person, remember?" Francis reminds the spectre.
And Garrick grins, "Good thing for you, I'm not a person then, at least not anymore."
"Then you pass the test. We'll leave as soon as my clothes are done," Francis replies as he nods to the tumble dryer.

Book of the month / 2020 / 05 May
I love books. Even though I hardly read any. Because my library is more like a collection of tomes, coffee-table books, limited editions... in short: books in which not "only" the content counts, but also the editorial performance, the presentation, the curating of the topic - the book as a total work of art itself.
Frank Sinatra has a cold
Gay Talese (with photographs from Phil Stern)
Reportage / 1966 - 2015 / Taschen Publishing house
Frank (Francis Albert) Sinatra determined show business in his day. His hits like the location promotion trilogy "New York, New York", "My kind of town Chicago is" and "LA is my Lady" as well as "Strangers in the Night", "Get a kick out of you", "Fly me to the Moon", "That's Life", and especially "My Way" are unforgettable evergreens. He was also unmissable on screen, for example as the original Danny Ocean (Oh yes, Mr. Clooney!) or in "Damned forever" (Oscar for best male supporting role). But "Ol' Blue Eyes" was more than a thoroughbred entertainer: as Don of the Rat Pack with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Junior etc., with his countless women's stories (among others Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Lauren Bacall, Mia Farrow, Grace Kelly) and his influence of the show-metropolis Las Vegas, which was just about to take off, he was not only a superstar, but among his colleagues he was called "Chairman of the Board" - half admired, half feared.
Gay Talese had been writing for years, especially for the New York Times, where he started out as an errand boy in 1952, and was in the process of transforming himself into a more literary journalist. He was commissioned by Esquire magazine in winter 1965 to write a classic celebrity portrait of Frankie Boy. Who was approaching the age of 50, already had to wear a toupee and was just losing his status as a superstar - to the "British Invasion" with the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Kinks, of all things. He was in a bad mood and bad terms. And then came this annoying reporter, with whom he absolutely did not want to talk. So he blamed it on his cold - because "The Voice" without a voice doesn't work. But Talese didn't take no for an answer, stayed in the wake of Sinatra and his gang - and wrote a story about it that would go down in history.
"Frank Sinatra has a cold" was published in Esquire in April 1966 and hit the wire like a bomb. This "journey into the innermost part of Sinatra's psyche and environment, showing the whole person behind the star; a mafioso and bully, a tyrant, a patron and weakling, a caricature of himself and a charismatic person who will win in the end." (WamS) has since been considered the ultimate showpiece of a celebrity reportage - and Talese, along with Tom Wolfe, Truman Capote, James Baldwin and Norman Mailer, is considered the icon of "New Journalism". Philip Cassier writes in Die Welt: "The text is one of those that makes any writer who is still halfway there realise that he is just a bungler."
Almost 50 years after its first publication, the story was reissued as a book in 2015. And this book is simply wow! Once again Taschen (it is already known that this is my favourite publisher) has succeeded in creating a more than worthy setting for an extraordinary content: Collector's edition signed by Talese himself, hardcover in a slipcase, letterpress-printed text, two different paper stocks, plus tip-ins and a fold-out, alongside notes and correspondence from the author’s archives - and pictures from Phil Stern, the only photographer granted access to Sinatra over an extraordinary four decades. Yeah, that Phil Stern who was already well-known for capturing all megastars of that time on film, including James Dean and Marylin Monroe.
“Exquisite… a tome tailor-made for journalism junkies… with its never-before-seen photos of Sinatra, Talese-penned introduction, and marked-up manuscripts from the archive printed on old-fashioned letterpress and accented in the swoony blue of Sinatra’s eyes, the TASCHEN book is the glossiest journalism textbook imaginable.” (Vanity Fair)
Fyi, here's that marvelous piece of journalism available for free:
