The “Frasier” reboot is an affront to marginalized people

It’s bad enough that Hollywood is taking away opportunities from new, young queer+POC creators in lieu of rehashing existing properties, but to revive the long-dead-and-never-very-funny Frasier is particularly egregrious. 

The show was already incredibly problematic during its original run, beyond the fact that “Frasier” was yet another of the patriarchy’s celebrations of men and their own mediocrity in mass media. 

It was the tale of two stuffy old cishet yt men and their racist, Republican cop father living in a disturbingly whitewashed bourgeious Seattle. Episodes often featuring them getting away with immoral and illegal behavior at the expense of others, often homeless, persons of color, and/or queer people. The show imposed heteronormative standards, often mocked Democrats and the left-leaning political movement, as well as the poor. It’s humor often relied on incredibly vulgar homophobia, misogyny, transphobia, sexism, racism, classism, and more. This is the sort of fodder that has made the show quite popular with older, conservative viewers long after the show’s cancellation. 

What’s worse is that the show’s lead star and producer, Kelsey Grammer is a far right extremist, who has been a vocal advocate for Donald Trump, pro-gun legislation, anti-LGBT movements, anti-abortion movements, and more. And in his personal life, he has been notorious in his abuse of ex-wife Camille Grammer and thanks to his privilege, was able to walk away scott free from a rape case involving a teenage girl in 1995. How he has not been blacklisted from the industry is beyond me. But to further support him at this point is intolerable.

Rebooting “Frasier” simply is an affront to the marginalized peoples of America. It is another victory for the patriarchy, bigotry, and yt supremacy, Have we all forgotten what happened with “Roseanne”? The new reboot of this show will not only double down on the original’s problematic content, but with Grammer at the helm, all sorts of his more extremist right wing views from the past 15 years will be lauded and normalized within the program. This sort of shit should not be given an open platform in 2018 for it will merely embolden the alt-right and similar practicers of hatred everywhere, by normalizing it in the form of TV entertainment.
