Bears Defeat #21 Virginia Tech In Extras

Also Beat Illinois State, Continue Domination at Littlewood Classic

PHOENIX – The California softball team made it seven straight victories with a thrilling 6-5 extra innings win over No. 21 Virginia Tech and a 5-2 beat down of Illinois State on Saturday at the Littlewood Classic.

The Golden Bears (9-1) used a 4-hit day from Elon Butler and a 3-run homer from Kyndal Todd to record their best start to the season since winning the first 12 games in 2018.

Game 1: Cal 6, No. 21 Virginia Tech 5 (8) The Bears rallied with two down in the first to take the early lead. Tatum Anzaldo drew a leadoff walk and scored when Acacia Anders doubled to center with two strikes. Butler quickly made it 2-0 with a laser off the wall in left to plate Anders.

Virginia Tech rallied back in the third with four runs on two hits. Starter Haylei Archer battled through the first two Hokie innings, but a single and a walk put two on with one out as Cal went to Randi Roelling out of the bullpen. Another walk loaded the bases and Rachel Castine hit a grand slam to make it 4-2.

Cal quickly had an answer in the fourth to knot things right back up. Anders took a free pass to start the inning and Butler launched a 1-0 pitch off the netting in left field for her fourth homer of the season.

Roelling settled in after the home run, scattering a single and a pair of walks through the end of the fifth. Cal's offense fell silent after the Butler home run, drawing just a pair of walks and a hit by pitch off of starter Lyndsey Grein and reliever Emma Mazzarone through the top of the seventh.

Starting the eighth inning with the International Tiebreaker and Mika Lee on second base, the Bears manufactured a run. Kaylee Pond put down a sacrifice bunt to move Lee to third, and after a groundout Butler doubled down the right field line for her third hit of the game to score Lee. Cal added another run when Butler raced home on a dropped third strike.

Leading 6-4, Roelling got a groundout, RBI sacrifice fly and a pop out to end the game and secure her third win of the season. She went 5.2 innings while allowing just two earned runs.

Game 2: Cal 5, Illinois State 2 Scoreless until the fifth, Cal's bats finally broke out thanks to Tianna Bell. The sophomore crushed her first home run of the season, a blast to left field as Cal took a 1-0 lead.

Anna Reimers was effective for the Bears in the circle, allowing just one hit, a bloop single, until the sixth inning. The Redbirds got their own bats going in that frame using a pair of hits and a couple Cal errors to take a 2-1 advantage.

The lead was short-lived as Pond went opposite field to even the game right back up with a solo shot. Tied 2-2 heading to the seventh, Cal reliever Ashanti McDade set the Illinois State hitters down in order to give the Bears a chance to walk it off in the bottom half.   

The Bears did just that when Todd launched a 2-2 pitch way over the fence in center for her first-career home run.

So I'm thinking a lot about how Garen expresses himself, and I honestly feel like he's very repressed. He's a pillar of Demacia who is always looked upon as the perfect member of their society. Pile on the fact that he's a Crownguard and the expectations thrust upon him and I think that equals to him being stifled in how he feels and how he expresses himself.

With the above being said, I think it's super important that when he finally meets someone he just lets loose ( eventually ). It'll take some time for the walls to crumble down, but the moment he tastes a bit of freedom to be just himself as a man with another person it'll be eye opening. He'll smile more, he'll trace his own scars and tell the other person about them in a soft gentler tone than his commanding vocalization.

This doubles so if he finds romance with a man, because I'm sure his parents and Tianna have grilled into him about how important it is for him to produce a Crownguard heir. But even if he finds romance with a woman, I think he'd be very inclined to tell her straight out he has no plans for children in the near future. Perhaps someday, but it's a little act of rebellion, the only one he can have in his position.

Long story short, someone take Garen on a date in the wilderness and skinny dip because he'll probably explode at first before giving in and having the time of his life. Let him break free, because every step he takes away from being the perfect soldier is a good thing, and I'm sure it's something Lux tells him.

It was a long day at work, having to blow up a HYDRA base. You groaned in exhaustion as you pulled your car into the driveway of your large-ish house. Flinging your mission bag over your shoulder as you closed the boot (Trunk for you americans) of the car. Walking up to the front door, you hoped that the 3 eldest kids you have were able to handle looking after the little ones. Keys jangling in your hand, you opened the door.

"Guess who's back!" You yelled into the hallway. Running could be heard throughout the house, making you smile.

A loud barrage of "Mummy!"s and "Mum!"s filled your ears as you were nearly knocked to the ground with the hugs from all 11 children.

"Were you guys good for Jaden, Alex and Tianna?" You asked the little ones.

They all nodded their heads sweetly, and you looked up at the 3 eldest children with a questioning look. Jaden, Alex and Tianna nodded with a small smile.

"That's good!" You said happily, "and guess what! All of your Uncles and Aunts are coming for dinner, so who wants to help me cook?"

The littlest ones nodded their heads enthusiastically, "Me, Me!"

You chuckled, "Okay, let's get started!"

Heading towards the kitchen, you made sure that all the children had jobs. The eldest had to clean, the middle children (Kari, Paul, Joanna and Keith) had to set the table and the youngest ones (George, Annie, Karl and Willma) had to help you cook.

As you were cooking, you heard the doorbell ring. "Jaden, can you get the door please?" You asked, stirring two pots at once.

"No problem Mum." He called back, pausing on cleaning up the toys in the hallway to open the door. Steve, Nat, Clint and Bruce were waiting in front of the door.

"Hey Jay!" Clint said with a broad smile

The teenage boy simple waved and let the four in, closing the door behind them.

"Where's your Mum?" Nat asked, looking around.

"Kitchen!" You yelled out to her, shooing the little ones out of the kitchen.

"Auntie Nat!" Annie said happily, leaping into her arms.

"Hey little Angle." Natasha said, picking the small child up.

You smiled as you watched, jumping when you heard a kitchen timer go off, "I'll be right with you guys, feel free to make yourself at home!"

Smiling, the avengers who were there sat on the couch.

Setting the last dish on the table, you sighed tiredly, "Well, eat up guys!"

You went to help a few of the little ones get their food as the whole (now present) Avengers team began eating.

Demacian Nobility and the Holy Blood

The Mageseeker comes out in less than 2 weeks and I thought it was the perfect moment to talk about a theory I had for years before it totally gets disproven in the game.

In Runeterra there are a few bloodlines which seem to be something special. Sivir’s blood was able to resuscitate Azir from the dead and while it is not sure how much it is still canon, in Sion’s Reborn Story it was mentioned that Jarvan IV blood was used to restore Sion to his current state. 

So we assume for now that the Lightshield bloodline is still special. 

I also assume that the Crownguards are also fit the bill. First of all, Lux is a powerful mage. While this doesn’t have to mean anything, in the Lux comic it is mentioned that magical abilities seem to be hereditary. So what about the rest of the Crownguards?

Whether Garen is also a magic user or not, it seems to change from story to story. In the Lux comic he was able to defeat Sylas without his sword, which seems to be blessed with magic while in the upcoming Mageseeker game he still summons a big sword of light to smite his enemies. If that is not magic, I don’t know.

Tianna Crownguard is also an interesting case. While we don’t see her use any kind of magic and is established as an important person of the military, she was able to wake up Garen while nobody else was able to. Again, it could be something else but the framing is suspicious for sure.

The thing is: there has to be a reason why these bloodlines are so special to begin with. And I do have a theory in that regard.

Magical bloodlines are usually connected to the divine, to the celestial. And while Demacia still was a young nation, it was also the time where Kayle and Morgana walked freely there.

In Kayle’s bio it is openly stated that she “imbuing the weapons of the worthy with her own sanctified fire” and had a protege named Ronas. My take is that Ronas was a Crownguard and he was blessed by Kayle, carrying a spark of celestial magic in it. Light and justice are indeed motives we find a lot with the Crownguards - Lux being a light mage and Garen serving and upholding the law of Demacia.

For the Lightshield, we can see that they try to be kind and just rulers. In What Once Sailed Free we can see that Jarvan the Third offered all prisoners the chance to begin a new life. It would make sense that someone like Morgana, who represents justice as a form of reformation could find liking in a leader like that and would offer her own blessing to them.

After Kayle’s and Morgana’s fallout, both disappeared from the public and they became myths. It could be that the Crownguards and Lightshields don’t know about it. An origin myth that you tell the others to explain why these families still have so much power. It could also be that this knowledge was carefully hidden since Demacia has become more and more magephobic in the time. 

However, what is your blood even worth if you are not even willing to fight for the ideals your own nation has built on? Only time will tell.

London: Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, to The Motive Trials! Last week, things got steamed up as our competitors battled it out in a test of sauna endurance, which saw Bernard Harper become our 3rd ghost to haunt The Arena.

This week, we're pitting sim against machine in a snacktacular challenge! Our competitors will need to continuously purchase snacks from their vending machines. If a snack gets stuck, they will need to shake the machine until it gives up the goods. If their machine breaks, they'll need to repair it and then continue. Will our competitors fall flat? Or will this challenge have a shocking conclusion?

Alright, Grim, are you ready for another exciting round?

Grim: Absolutely, London. It looks like Aubree is already getting her first snack.

London: Oh no! Did her machine jam on her first try?

Grim: She seems to be going for a straightforward shake method to get that snack.

London: Aubree was able to shake it loose. Here's Chen making another snack selection.

Grim: Lavender is making her purchases without incident so far.

London: Uh-oh! Sixam, we have a problem. It looks like Tianna's snack is stuck this time.

Grim: Looks like she's opting for the ol' hip-slam technique.

Just as Tianna was able to free that snack it seems that Carter's machine has turned stingy.

London: Aubree's machine is jammed again as well!

Grim: Carter was able to retrieve his snack and is looking pretty pleased with himself.

London: Aubree is giving the machine some tough love and it seems it was enough to free the snack.

But Tianna's machine has jammed again! What method will she try this time?

Grim: While she's figuring it out, Lavender seems to be having the same problem.

London: There it goes! Tianna was able to get that snack to drop and continue on.

Grim: Lavender is going for the popular hip-check move.

London: Oh! That didn't seem to work! That snack is still stuck in the machine, Grim!

Grim: Seems like she'll try the traditional top shake this time.

London: Still nothing! Seems she's getting frustrated enough to give the machine a big shove. That did it!

Grim: But Tianna is back at war with her vending machine.

He literally is with a woman he don’t want but why stay around, what is wrong with him, I just don’t know but Oakley is very devastated about it and he’s now gone to whatever” Wadz walked in “oh where is he?” he said, Tianna moved to the side “he’s walked off on the phone, just swearing” he closed the door “oh right, I will wait here” nodding my head “were you with him?” Wadz just looked at me “erm yeah” so he knows “what happened? Did he find him?” I asked “we was erm, we went back to the house. Oakley was going to drop Aziel off, his dad said to him I want to spend some time with him, bring him to the house. I will take him school; Oakley is like fine. Whatever he will be able to have studio time, so he erm, well he came to get me but then we got caught up. It was like ten, it’s late so Oakley called his dad and was like fuck it, why have him there. It’s late, he is falling asleep, his dad wasn’t picking up. Rachel that day went to Ireland so she ain’t there to call. So he said let’s just check on him, best thing to do and explain he can’t stay, it’s late no point, Aziel needs to sleep. It’s ten so I get it, we went there. The house was dead silent, no sound or anything, lights were all off, Oakley is like ok what the fuck, and erm. Went to the garage because that light was on, the door open. I don’t even want to mention a thing, I don’t want to ask what he saw but Aziel fell asleep in my arms, so he slept which is good, he needs to rest “you took your time” I said to Oakley “Juke was on the phone, and I was speaking to the doctors or whatever” he sat down “ok, is everything going well or not?” he shook his head “he isn’t breathing on his own, he ain’t lasting. I knew that when I came with him here. They assumed he was trying he isn’t, but I told Juke and he goes you told that bitch, meaning you and that is why I walked off and just you know cussed him out, I told you because I needed you that is why” smiling at him “I will accept he is upset for him to say that but I will break his neck if he does that again” I made that clear, Oakley is looking at Aziel “you think it’s my fault, he asked for Aziel. I was late, maybe he was lonely, maybe I took too long” shaking my head “stop it, it’s not your fault, none of this is. Please don’t blame yourself, your dad has been this way too long when he could have broke free” Oakley sighed out “I told him something and after that he went weird on me, and I hate it. my dad has been pathetic his whole life, I made them who they are, and he still didn’t change, and I wanted the best for him. Maybe he will be at peace now” holding my hand out to him, Oakley held my hand “does your mom know?” I asked “yeah, she took it really bad” I suppose she will “you know when you be with someone that long, no matter what the relationship is. They become part of your life, so I get it. I am sorry, I pray he pulls through” Oakley shook his head “if he does, he will be bed bound. I don’t know what to do, he has no next of kin, so it’s me. They all in Guyana looking at me to get them here, I can’t do that so it’s me. I don’t know Rylee; he won’t be the same guy” this is a hard decision.

Oakley has been staring off and holding my hand for so long, he is in a daze “I am hurt, I am upset but at the same time he really did nothing for me, so in a sense what use was he. I just don’t know; I love him because he is my dad and that is it. he has no back bone, he allowed shit to happen every time, I am just so confused” I know Oakley is fighting his demons, there is a lot going on in his mind “I need to make a decision before anyone comes, he lived a miserable life and then just to keep him alive to live a more miserable one then what? What you think?” Oakley looked to me “don’t do that to me” I said “look, Oakley” my sister said “you already know what to do in your heart. Ok he wasn’t the best dad; he wasn’t there as he should have been, but you care, and you know what to do. Your mom will probably keep him bed bound, she had him like that anyways” Tianna is harsh “free him” looking at Ti “I don’t know this man, but I am sad for him, and he deserves to be free, he became complacent in life, that is his own fault, but he wants to be free now, it’s time. And I don’t think you should be sad about it” Tianna said what I couldn’t, I feel so bad “you right” he sighed out “we never know a person, but your dad was a kind man when I saw him, but you wouldn’t seek a father figure if he was good too” Oakley got up, I just went mute and I don’t know why “Rachel seems weird, she would keep him bed bound. He’s been bed bound all his fucking life, his father has no fucking life” Tianna said to me in a whisper, the door closed “you right” Wadz said “your sister is right, I think Oakley will be ok because he lived without him but it’s just the initial hurt” Wadz got a point, I just hope he will be ok.

Oakley asked me to go home, I didn’t want to say no and then refuse but I think he didn’t want me to be around when his family comes. He didn’t want me to be around that, I mean he’s protecting me, and I don’t want to add to his stress so I obeyed and came home. I didn’t want to go but what can I do so I am home for now just waiting on Oakley to say what he wants and all that, I am worried about him mostly. I answered the call from my dad “hello” I thought he would be calling soon, my body clock right now is a mess, I’ve just not slept “I heard you know; I am so upset for him. I just spoke to him” oh I know my dad would have “Neil is selfish you know; I can’t even lie. I am mad with that guy; he’s stressing out Oakley for what. Nobody asked him to be unhappy, he chose to be. I want to be there for Oakley, but I can’t” my dad is mad “I know dad, I don’t know what to say to him. Did he tell you what he done or not? He just wanted me to go home, that family of his came” my dad sighed out “he told the doctors to not save him” I cringed “Tianna said a lot, I didn’t know what to say” I mumbled “he mentioned but she is right, take care of Oakley. He needs it, you know he plays dad and husband to that side, Neil was nothing to that family, but a sperm donor so be there for Oakley Rylee, you be the woman he needs I’m saying this is the moments he needs you, I’ll do a flying visit soon but yeah, I’m sorry to hear. I mean he’s still a human, he’s still his dad but why, even YB is mad. Just yeah, how you holding up?” My dad asked “trying to sleep, I’m just zoned out. Tianna came with me, she is a big help with Aziel and I’m glad she did” my dad cooed out “good, you girls stick by. But yeah just hold tight, that family is like the Barbados lot” I sniggered “dad” he is silly “did I lie” shaking my head sighing out “I’m just saying, but love you daughter” walking over to the bedroom window “oh Oakley is here” Tianna just opened the gate I am guessing “he wants you looks like” my dad said “I’ll leave you to it” I sighed out “yeah, love you too dad, speak soon” disconnecting the call, he is driving with no sleep so I am not happy with that at all really, making my way out of the bedroom. I wonder if I can get him to sleep really, I haven’t slept but neither has he either. Making my way down “I was about to tell you, he shouldn’t be driving either” nodding my head slowly “I know, thanks. I can’t sleep really, just the daylight and everything, I am out of sync” opening the door “I’ll leave you to it” my sister went upstairs, Oakley just came to me without even a word he just hugged me. Wrapping my arms around his neck “are you ok?” He placed his face in the crook of my neck, kicking the door shut. He didn’t even speak a word but just hugged me, he is crying again I can hear his light sobs, so I remained silent and just hugged him, clearly he wanted me and my heart right now, I love him.

He moved back from the hug, and wiped his face with his free hand because in the other he has an envelope which I didn’t notice until now “why did you drive? You haven’t slept, anything could have happened to you” he just shrugged “I just needed a hug, I just needed you” my heart skipped a beat hearing that “I am here, but please don’t drive. I need you too, you want to sleep?” I rather he did, he shook his head “the family is there, I just escaped” his phone started ringing, he got his phone out of his pocket and declined the call, then he proceeded to turn his phone off “I need space” he said “that is fine, but I need you to rest” Oakley just shook his head “they mad with me just because I made the decision you know, like it’s my fault that I did it but he would have no life? Like no, he can barely breathe on his own, I am not doing it” he shook his head “Oakley, you made the right decision, he would be just here. That is it, does she want to just take care of him?” I am confused with that woman “she loves him now, I don’t know. I just walked out, but erm. There was this, said my name on it. It was on the side, just my name and it’s my dad handwriting, you mind if you look in it for me please?” nodding my head “I can’t do it” he asked “I can, that is fine. You want to go upstairs, come. Let’s go upstairs” I asked, he passed me the envelope though, I think he wanted it out of his hands but it’s just horrible to know that this may potentially be his dad writing it for him, I don’t want too but I would do it for him, I love Oakley so much and I do it for him. I wonder why, what made him do this because I know my dad is mad but like people can be undercover depressed too, just because they don’t express it, he was literally just there. Neil has no purpose, and it was crazy to see, he didn’t even raise his kids, neither of them did. Oakley raised himself plus Juke, but he got blamed for his shit too.

I sighed out, I mean this is fucking crazy. Looking inside the envelope, there is a picture in here too. Taking the picture out, seeing it’s a picture of Oakley and Juke, Oakley looked about ten here “what is it?” he asked, “it’s a picture of you and Juke” passing it him “oh yeah” he looked at it “when I thought life was ok” he said, opening the paper and I shuddered, I hate this shit “what is on there?” he asked “erm, it’s a letter” I just said, “are you ok for me to read it?” I asked before I did, he nodded his head “Oakley Neil, I originally wanted to call you Neil, but your mother thought otherwise but I like Oakley Neil, I remember when you came to me as a teenager and asked me why your name was so formal, it still makes me laugh to this day but son the name makes you different. My greatest pride in life is that I leave behind my two son’s that I know will go on in life, if you’re reading this then it was time. I have never been happy, but I got by, when you had a son it just stopped the moment for a second, you need to keep on with the gardening we did Oakley, he loves it. My happiness was never mine, I lived through others to be happy and that was never a life to live. Oakley all I ever wanted was to see you settle, and I have seen it and I” I paused, oh this is hard “I see the love you hold for Rylee, and I know you will be in safe hands, I know she will take care of you Oakley you will be ok son. I have one request is please take care of that broken youngest, Juke needs you. You was more of a father figure to him then I was, but he was your mother favourite he got away with most things, I know Juke loves a lot so please take care of him Oakley. All your life you have taken care of us, we never believed in you, and you did it. Son I want you to know I did love you, and you were right I never had a backbone and please bury me in Guyana so I can be with my family. But Oakley, it’s time you gave your love, life, and soul to your own family that you have, stop with the feeding of others, Rylee and Aziel and many more to come is the reason. All I ask is you never leave Juke behind, I always loved you boys, and I always kept that picture in my wallet, my biggest pride and joy, love dad” I wiped my tear that fell, and Oakley just broke down crying, leaning over to him and hugged him “I am sorry” I apologised, I feel so hurt for him.

I feel so sad Oakley like I wish he slept; he isn’t sleeping so neither am I really. Just here with him consoling him “why did he have to do it? Like was it that serious, I could have helped him” Oakley mumbled, he is not happy, and I get it “Oakley sometimes people are too far gone, there is nothing we can do when that happens, he was already preparing for this moment. And really, we don’t know a person, do we really? Look I am talking shit aren’t I, I am tired. But I rather you sleep too, I won’t sleep without you” Oakley shook his head “I just, fuck. I am so upset, why did he have to do that” looking at my phone as it started ringing “it’s Juke, you speak to him” I passed him the phone “what” he answered it and put it on speakerphone “Oakley what the fuck bro, she fucking left me, how dare she fucking leave me that is my fucking dad!” Juke barked “aye, calm it ok. I wanted Rylee here, I wanted her to come here. I asked for it got it? I didn’t know you ran to LA for what!? Who told you to go there, you piece of fucking shit. Do not fucking come at me about Rylee, ever got it” the line is so silent “whatever, capping for that side. He’s my dad too!! I lost my dad” he half shouted “I know, I’m sorry but I assumed you was here” he apologised “she fucking knew!” He barked “she is who? I told you Juke, correct yourself” he is correcting him “Rylee” he mumbled “nobody told you to go there. So where do we go from here, Juke I have no time for this shit, I am so fucking drained. I had to see that shit with dad engraved in my fucking mind! I close my eyes and I see that shit!” Oakley disconnected the call “I don’t want to hear it” he just said passing me the phone.

Teen Night: “Art of Imagination”

Let your imagination flow in our first Teen Night of 2023! Join us on Friday, January 27th from 5–7:30 pm for Teen Night: “Art of Imagination.”

What to Know

Brought to you by BkM Teens and inspired by Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech, this evening is focused on the Art of Imagination.

Virgil Abloh was a visionary, who believed in creatively and constantly looking to add to his work, as well as his motif to “Question Everything.” These unique traits of Abloh’s work allowed him to be a visionary in the arts, spreading his work from fFashion, to mMusic, to aArchitecture.

This Teen Night will be an opportunity for expression and said imagination, using different fields of art, and highlighting underrepresented figures in art.      

What to Expect

Our first Teen Night is packed with fun activities and performances.

First, we’ll have a “Polymath of Colors” panel discussion with up-and-coming photographer Cierra Spooner, fashion designer Tianna Osbourne, and hairstylist and model Monique Mundy. The discussion will highlight their creative process, their inspirations, and what they do when they hit a creative block. We also have a scavenger hunt in the “Figures of Speech” Exhibition, and then throughout the night art making activities including creating your collage self portraits, designing your own hat making, and lastly responding to our Talk Back Walls.

And don’t forget about the performances! We have Brooklyn Tech’s very own Lady Dragons, a step team, New York rapper Geevee, and dance group Soul Fusion Dance Company. To end the night, we have DJ Bianca Perez, who will be keeping up the great vibes of the night.
