Frozen: The Musical
Let’s not pretend like I haven’t been listening to these songs every day since the day they’ve been released.  I know I don’t write about musicals on here, but this one has taken over my life and I haven’t even seen it yet, so I just had to share.

Bits and Bobs
Here are just a few music happenings that you may want to check out:
1. Jessie Litwin on The Poet’s Lounge Podcast with Manni Festo
Tumblr media
Last Monday, singer/songwriter Jessie Litwin was on an episode of The Poet’s Lounge called Lovey Dovey Stuff and World Travelling with Jessie Litwin.  In it, she discusses the inspiration behind her Stripped EP, her current music endeavors, and shares two brand new songs.  If you are a fan of Jessie Litwin (which, I mean, if you’re not already, what are you doing?), or just a fan of folk-pop/singer-songwriter music in general, I highly recommend giving this episode a listen.
2.  New Single from Sam Creighton
Tumblr media
For those of you who do not know, Sam Creighton and Jessie Litwin are both members of the all-femaie a cappella group, Musae.  They were also both part of The Nor’Easters.  It looks like Sam is also pursuing solo music with the release of her new single, “Adore”.  “Adore” is an excellent pop number that is sure to have you singing and grooving along.  Sam has an incredible range and a voice that was seemingly made for pop music.  She has already shown us she has what it takes with her solos on two Ariana Grande songs: “Honeymoon Avenue” and “Into You”.  You can check out her new single here.
3.  Rozzi is BACK!
Tumblr media
I featured Rozzi Crane on this blog way back in 2014.  The following year, she released two powerful soul-pop/r&b driven EPs, Space and Time.  Now, she’s back with more music under the name Rozzi.  Since the start of 2018, Rozzi has released two singles: “Uphill Battle” and “Never Over You”.  The singles offer the same beautiful soul feel that her previous EPs had, but these new songs take it up a notch.  You can take a listen here and be sure to keep an eye out for her upcoming debut full length album.

365 Songs to Wake Up to (or The Songs That Ear-wormed Their Way into My Head While I Was Sleeping)
For as long as I can remember, I have always woken up with a song stuck in my head.  This year, as a sort of New Year’s Resolution, I’ve decided to document them.  Below is the compiled playlist for October:
Some days saw multiple songs while some songs saw multiple days.  This playlist was a good mix of songs from my past, feel good go-to’s, and current radio hits.  The only song unavailable on Spotify was Snow Tha Product’s “Good Nights”.  I can’t wait to see what November’s playlist looks like!

Below is the compiled playlist for September:
Some days saw multiple songs while some songs saw multiple days.  For the first time (I believe) every song was available on Spotify.  This playlist is an interesting sprinkling of pop and rock mixed with the occasional theme song or musical number (of course).  There’s definitely a good mix of songs here and I hope October’s playlist proves to be the same.

Below is the compiled playlist for June:
Some days saw multiple songs while some songs saw multiple days.  “Hard Times”, “Bad Liar”, “Uh Huh”, “Want You Back”, “Malibu”, and “Sign of the Times” showed up at least two times each.  This playlist is a fun one combining current pop hits with some older throwbacks and some of my guilty pleasure show themes sprinkled in.  Not currently on Spotify, but very much part of June’s list are  Lilli Passero’s version of “Town Without Pity” and the Andi Mack theme song “Tomorrow Starts Today”.  I can’t wait to see what music July will bring!

Below is the compiled playlist for May:
Some days saw multiple songs and some songs saw multiple days.  This month was probably my favorite so far.  It was very current with recent hits by Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Lorde, and Charlie Puth sprinkled throughout.  This month also seemed to be taken over by Sabrina Carpenter with her name showing up six times on the list.  Unfortunately, all of those songs were covers so they aren’t on Spotify.  However, you can listen to her cover of “Attention” with Alex Aiono, her take on “Love on the Brain”, and her version of “That’s What I Like” all on YouTube.  Also on the list, but unavailable on Spotify are Linda Ronstadt’s “(Love is Like A) Heatwave”and Lilli Passero’s “A Love of My Own” and “Tears Dry on Their Own”.  Here’s hoping the songs getting stuck in my head in June are just as epic as the ones from this month!

Artist to Watch: Lilli Passero
I’ve been watching The Voice since day one and have enjoyed watching the show evolve over the years.  One of my favorite things about the show is its ability to cultivate a group of uniquely talented artists who are ALL able to engage the audience with each performance.  While I truly do love watching each season’s collective group of artists perform, it seems that just about every season, I find myself being almost magnetically drawn to one or two artists.  In seasons past, it was artists like Juliet Simms, Jacquie Lee, Amy Vachal, Madi Davis,  Taylor John Williams, Alisan Porter, and Hannah Huston just to name a few.  This season, one of the artists I have found myself really captivated by was unfortunately (and perhaps prematurely) eliminated this week and I just couldn’t let her go without sharing a few extra thoughts.  So, without further ado, here is why Lilli Passero is my current artist to watch.
I am a huge fan of vintage pop/jazz artists such as Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, and Amy Winehouse, so when I saw that an artist was going to be bringing a similar style to The Voice, I must admit I was pretty excited. In fact, Lilli had me hooked right from her blind audition!
youtube
Lilli beautifully and effortlessly navigated through Carla Thomas’ “A Love of My Own” and earned herself a three-chair turn and one incredibly unforgettable serenade by Alicia Keys.  During Lilli’s time on The Voice, she has also performed songs by Amy Winehouse, Carole King, and Nat King Cole.  While I’ve had all of those performances on repeat recently, one of my favorite performances of hers is her take on Gene Pitney’s “Town Without Pity”.
youtube
This performance had that old vinyl record vibe and was one of the most epic bounce backs of all time after a one-off week plagued with illness.  I felt like she was really in her element on this one with the right amount of composure and theatrics to truly sell the number.
There are lot of things to love about Lilli Passero that make her an artist you want to watch.  For one, she has this incredibly subtle and sultry stage presence that compels you to listen.  She really has a way with drawing you in  and making you hang on every word she sings.  She has the ability to truly grasp the meaning of what she is singing and expertly emote it to the audience.  Plus, of course, Lilli has all of those beautiful jazzy intricacies to her voice that prove she really fits the mold in a genre of music that requires and is defined by such an artistry.
I know jazz may not be the direction, Lilli necessarily wants to go in(though I’d be totally down with a Lilli Passero jazz album/ep or just like a really smooth collab with Postmodern Jukebox...just saying :) ), I have a feeling that those little elements to her voice will play a big role in allowing her to be the timeless, yet current artist she wants and 100% has the potential to be.  I look forward to whatever Lilli Passero music the future brings because with someone having as great a musical taste as Lilli, I just know that any music she puts out will be an epic blend of genres/musical styles that I also love deep down in my soul.
In the slight chance that Lilli Passero is reading this really long randomly rambling post:
Thank you for taking a chance on a competition show even though it may not have been the lane you necessarily expected or wanted to take.  Thank you for helping keep such a beautiful genre of music alive in a world driven by cookie-cutter pop hooks.  Thank you for sharing your talents with us and please never stop singing.  Never stop being creatively and authentically you!
You all can check out more on Lilli Passero here:
www.facebook.com/lillipasseromusic  www.twitter.com/lillipassero  www.instagram.com/lillipassero and of course purchase her Voice Catalog on iTunes
If you want to know more of my thoughts on Lilli Passero’s time on The Voice or any of Season 12′s other artists as the season continues, you can check out my Voice Recaps HERE

Below is the compiled playlist for April:
Some days saw multiple songs while some songs saw multiple days.  This month was pretty much taken over by musicals...or should I say musical.  I recently watched the full Heathers Musical and that one time was all it took.  Those songs are now permanently stuck in my head!  The playlist also includes Disney and oldies, among others.  Not listed above are “Prince Ali” from Disney’s Aladdin, the opening number to Heathers the Musical: “Beautiful”, the bonkers love song “Screw Loose” from the Cry Baby Musical, Felicia Ricci’s hilarious rendition of “Darryl is a Boy (and He Lives in My Closet)”, and Natalie Weiss’ take on “Alto’s Lament”.  I can’t wait to hear all of the music May has in store!

365 Songs to Wake Up to (or The Songs That Ear-wormed Their Way into My Head While I Was Sleeping): March
For as long as I can remember, I have always woken up with a song stuck in my head.  This year, as a sort of New Year’s Resolution, I’ve decided to document them.  Below is the compiled playlist for March:
Some days, there were multiple songs in my head.  Some songs saw multiple days. The song that was in my head the most this past month was “I Choose You” by Sara Bareilles.  “Something There” from Beauty and the Beast, The Nor’easters’ version of “Jaywalk”, Selena Gomez’s “Magic”, and Jessie Litwin’s “Safe and Secret” all were really close seconds with each of them showing up on the list twice.  One song on the list was unfortunately unavailable on Spotify, but I will be posting a link to Micah Tryba’s version of “I’m Every Woman” right HERE.  While there were some repeat songs from previous months, my favorite part about March’s list is that it was full of decades old throwbacks.  I hope you enjoy this month’s playlist as much as I do.  I can’t wait to see what songs sneak their way into my brain in April.

365 Songs to Wake Up to (or The Songs That Ear-wormed Their Way into My Head While I Was Sleeping): February
For as long as I can remember, I have always woken up with a song stuck in my head.  This year, as a sort of New Year’s Resolution, I’ve decided to document them.  Below is the compiled playlist for February:
Some days, there were multiple songs in my head.  Some songs saw multiple days. "Surrender” and “Honeymoon Avenue” each showed up twice while “Shape of You” found its way onto the list three times.  “River” was stuck in my head the most at four times. One song, due to not being available on Spotify, is unfortunately not listed in the playlist above.  That song is “Hangin” by Bastille This month while it had some carry over from last month’s A Cappella focused list,  the list of songs seemed to be a bit more eclectic.  There are quite a few random songs on that list that I haven’t heard in years.  Perhaps my favorite song to show up on the list for this month is the Buffy Theme.  I can’t wait to see what songs make their way into March’s list.

Ten Songs to Put on Repeat (Part One)
As the summer sees many new music releases, this list is bound to change multiple times.  BUT, here are the ten songs (in no particular order) that I have had on repeat for the past few weeks:
1.  BAD LIAR- SELENA GOMEZ
youtube
Whether you are a Selena Gomez fan or not, there is no denying that this song is a total jam!  The beat is simple, but will have you groovin’ in no time.  The verses are seductive and the bridge and chorus are super catchy.  It is near impossible not to sing along!
2.  SIGN OF THE TIMES- HARRY STYLES
youtube
I’m going to be honest, I never thought I’d have a song from a One Direction member on a list like this.  That’s not to say that I don’t think any of them are talented because they are.  It’s just that boy bands are more a thing of my past (BSB and N’Sync were everything to my eight year old self), so I don’t actively seek out their music.  BUT, I’ve got to say this song is incredible!  I grew up listening to classic rock and I’ve always had a love for varying forms of pop music, so this ballad really resonated with me.  It is a welcome departure from a cutesy boy band sound and a great way to kick off a more mature sounding solo career.
3.  ISSUES- JULIA MICHAELS
youtube
Let’s be real, who hasn’t had this song on repeat?  Julia Michaels is no stranger to pop music.  She’s had her hand in creating hits like Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” and Fifth Harmony’s “Miss Movin’ On” as well as a handful of Selena Gomez songs including “Bad Liar”.  She is now taking her songwriting skills and using them to cultivate what seems to be a pretty promising solo career starting with this popular single.
4.  MALIBU- MILEY CYRUS
youtube
From Hannah Montana to Bangerz, we have seen many layers and a lot of growth from Miley Cyrus.  “Malibu” is perhaps her most mature and vulnerable track yet.  She really put her heart out there with this beautifully penned love song.
5.  LIABILITY- LORDE
youtube
I’ve loved Lorde since The Love Club EP.  She has talent beyond her years and creates music that is unique and authentic.  “Liability” comes from her second album, Melodrama, set to release June 16, 2017.  This song really spoke to me and I feel like it is one of those songs that just evokes emotions that many can relate to.
