This kildeer scared off Searocket and its semipalmated sandpiper friend. Kildeer are dicks!

Over the past summer (2023), Imani (the adult piping plover, offspring of original Montrose Beach pair Monty and Rose) sometimes chased them, instead of the three fledglings, around. I didn’t get to see this myself but the pictures are amazing, considering the size difference.

I did see a kildeer chase Monty in umm 2021? 2?, so Imani is avenging his father 🥲

Not to be a damaged Californian but it's wild to me that in other places you can just like. go to a river or a lake. and hang out there. and swim around. and that's just allowed and encouraged. What the fuck.

#i know we have the ocean but you gotta understand that you don't really go to the ocean in California. you go to the beach.#and when you are in the ocean it is usually a fight all the way. it's freezing and salty and will bowl you over.#to be clear i love that but also like. sometimes i just want a swimming pool experience but not at a fucking pool.#i have been in a california freshwater body twice in my whole life.#if you had lake access you were rich enough to own and haul a boat.#like that was so foreign that I told my dad at like 15 that I was gonna buy him a boat when i sold my first book. this was a PIPE DREAM.#(i do intend to deliver on that promise if i ever sell a fucking book btw. i will do it.#my dad is great and he deserves a boat on which to fish!!!)

Thank you very much!! Ahti II is very special to me :D

Funny story, he is a brackish water dweller! His home is the Baltic Sea, which on average has a salinity of about 7‰ or 0,7%. By contrast, oceans on average have 35‰ or 3,5%! The salt content of the water is even lower the further you go from the ocean, and Ahtola, Ahti II's home city (and the capital of his country) is located pretty deep in the Baltic, it's somewhere between Sweden and Finland and south of Åland. There isn't very much salt ^^'

As he is away from home a lot as a teen (learning to be like the average person and whatnot) he enjoys the joys of swimming in pure freshwater too, in Finnish Lakeland in the summer!

#merfolk's bodies are more flexible than fishes' when it comes to salinity changes. ahti II could even manage swimming in saltwater #of course theres a limit to how much salt the human body can handle but a real pike would probably dehydrate to death in saltwater you know #it takes some acclimating to get used to waters with salinity you arent accustomed to though!#jumping into saltwater cold turkey at the beach would leave a freshwater merm ill and vice versa #beaches often have small pools (well. big enough for a long tail) that let you get adjusted if youre not from around there #im going to write this down somewhere in a comprehensive little post eventually haha #asks #anon #anonymous #anonymous asks #merfolk #ahti II

saw a buuunch of swans and ducks n other birds at the beach

#like all of the left side of the beach was swarmed with birds lol #i thought swans/ducks prefered freshwater...do they also like a nice day out in the beach #the tide was out/low faraway or whatever #hope they had fun #catching and eating crabs or whatever
