a new ghastling friend
word count: 498
also on ao3
Evil x angrily murmured to himself as he walked in the uncomfortably hot nether – usually he would proclaim to anyone present, usually Xisuma, that the nether was always much better than the stupid, bright overworld, but now? The hot weather and sticky soul sand wasn't helping his declining mood.
he was looking for another way to hijack into the hermitcraft server, using their nether system as a breach between worlds, but of course perfect-always-prepared Xisuma had reinforced the firewall around the location players usually traversed, so now Ex was walking all the way back to his portal, with the weight of another failed attempt on his shoulders
that is until he heard a sound, a ever so weak animalistic whine coming from his left
for a moment he thought it was a ghast, looking around for it but… nothing – then the sound again, a bit louder this time
“what in the…” Evil x murmured to himself, walking closer to a nearby pillar of bones where the sound was coming from
to his surprise, behind one of the pillars was a tiny, pale and fragile looking creature, its face scrunched into a throw, eyes closed and its small tentacles like arms dangling from its side
it took a moment for Ex to associate the similarities
“is that… a ghast?” Ex asked out loud, coming closer to inspect the creature, who upon hearing the commotion started to make more noises
“it sounds so… pathetic”
Evil x thought to himself, he really should just go about his day and let nature take its course, shouldn't he? – he had learned very early on that as majestic as this world has appeared when he and Xisuma first experience it, death was inevitable, it came to all beings in this world no matter how much they ran from it
so why get attached to any being if death will always be their destiny no matter what?
the tiny, dried and weak ghastling wiggled his little tentacles closer to Evil x's boot, letting out another pathetic little cry, and in that moment Ex felt… something
he didn't know what it was, it was a strange tickling feeling under his skin, something on his body telling him to bring the creature as close to him as possible
“Urgh! this is so stupid…! I have more important manners to attend to than to watch you die” Evil x angrily exclaimed to the creature, who didn't move but simply continued to exist, with its sad eyebrows and frown, looking very, very pathetic
Evil x looked at the ghastling, looked back where his portal was, and back at the ghastling again
and let out an angry growl
“You better not make me regret this!” exclaimed the villain, crouching down to slowly pick up the fragile pale body, who quickly wrapped itself up against the cold under the hot red armor
and with that, Evil x continued his path towards his portal, now with a new friend in his arms.
#evil xisuma#mojang dropped a new friendly ghast and I HAD to give it to Ex#wrote this on my phone as fast as I could lol#the devil works hard but I work faster

How are only baby ghasts dehydrated, surely the adult ones would need more water to survive. And if there's not enough water for babies, there's certainly not enough for adults
#bedposting#minecraft#i like the transportation options friendly ghasts bring. but the logic/lore associations? very shaky

During this Live we learned that ghasts:
Are biological creatures
that they have infant forms (that appear to have external gills like salamanders)
that they rely on water for their life cycle to complete
that, related to #3, they like chomping on snowballs
that they're neutral and even friendly when not dehydrated like a frog in summer
In addition to the points in the graphic:
Flat faces with the eyes at the front, like many amphibians
smooth skin
mouth that looks tiny until opened (have you seen an axolotl or caecilian with its mouth open?)
fireballs may be analogous to skin and saliva-based weapons in amphibians
has zero mercy
cannot aim at all
makes sounds quite like the axolotl when you think about it
operates on 1.5-2 brain cells at all times
... We may be able to conclude that ghasts are amphibians.
If we look at this phylogenetically, then we may be able to speculate that ghasts are highly derived (specialized) temnospondyls, which are huge prehistoric amphibians who were like 25% mouth.
#here take this because the minecraft subreddit keeps shadowing my post when I try to post it#I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FEEL ABOUT THIS I KIND OF LOVE IT#I love the ghastlings they're so smol#minecraft#minecraft live#mineblr#minecraft lore#minecraft ghast#happy ghast#ghastling#mcblr#dried ghast#minecraft lore theory

A Happy Ghast? Well Now I've Seen Everything.
For as long as I can remember, people have been asking for a rideable dragon to hatch from the Ender Dragon egg. But a good creator never does what the audience expects, because the audience's expectations are mostly informed by the past, and the creator must plan for the future.
So instead of a dragon, here's a rideable ghast. You know, like those mods that add "happy" versions of hostile mobs? It's like that. And instead of hatching a dragon egg, you have to soak a very thirsty hell squid. Enjoy!
It might seem like a random, quirky feature to some people, but I think the Happy Ghast is the first feature in a while to truly add to the game's progression. We've had new weapons, armor, and ore, but for the first time in a while, this is a new kind of asset that will help us navigate and build. The Happy Ghast will be on the same level as the Elytra as a late game feature everyone will want to have.
And arguably, the Happy Ghast outdoes the Elytra:
First, there's a very involved process to get it: you have to find it in the most dangerous nether biome, then bring it to the overworld to soak in water for a while, and then you raise it like any other pet. Once it grows up, you craft a harness, and then you're set. It's a fun journey just to get it.
It serves as a pet rather than just an item, adding a personal angle to it. The Ghastling is adorable, and the Happy Ghast is a novelty that just...makes veteran Minecraft players happy. You get your own Ghast. That's worth it even before you can fly on it.
The riding looks a lot more precise and smooth than the rapid thrill of the Elytra, and you can build while you're on it! That's arguably the best part - it's basically Creative Mode flying in survival. It's practically an accessibility feature, and it's a more liberating way to build tall structures in Survival Mode than putting up tons of scaffolding (or in my case, dirt that I'll remove later.)
Lastly, three other people can hitch a ride on your Happy Ghast. It's basically a flying minivan. Everyone will want a ride from the first person in the server to get a Happy Ghast. Your unsettling, pale cube of happy ectoplasm will be the envy of the server!
Who knows, maybe this game drop will actually come with an Elytra update to balance out the usefulness of our new friendly phantasm.
It's a really well designed feature, and I'm excited to try it out. I love it when Mojang really zeroes in on what aspects of the gameplay to update based on how we play the game. This is one of those new features that really shows off their creative team's strengths.

ok so, new block and mob:
dried ghast, which is found near fossils in soul sand valleys
you take it and put it in water (overworld) and it rehydrates and becomes a live ghastling (baby ghast)
which then wanders around and follows mobs temporarily (similar to parrots maybe?) and is friendly
it can then be fed snowballs to grow up and when fully grown it is now a happy ghast, which can be ridden and flown by up to 4 players

saw @athina-blaine's ask abt a labru gamer AU so let me present my split second dunmeshi minecraft server thoughts
• thistle: created the server. Refuses to budge on the rules he put in place on day one, except for like 2 notable exceptions. Barely plays but always memorable when he does, builds the weirdest shit and then logs off for months at a time
• delgal: notable exception #1, he asked thistle to make it normal survival mode instead of hardcore bc it was too high stress. used to play very frequently until he got a new PC and moved on to other games. thistle has forbidden the other players from destroying the castle he made
• senshi: has taken it upon himself to do all of the farming and cooking in the game, has figured out the best ways to make the most efficient farms, is wildly talented w redstone but only in terms of making it easier to grow crops and breed friendly mobs. eagerly awaits new food recipes with each update
• laios: has made it his personal goal to capture each of the hostile mobs and keep it in his base as a personal monster showcase. Goes on hour-long mining excursions to fortify his base because the blazes and ghasts keep destroying their enclosures. Wants to find an ender portal but just to get shulker boxes, determined to figure out how to defeat the ender dragon without killing it
• falin: notable exception #2, she asked thistle to turn on keep inventory because she kept exploring and getting too lost but she didn't want to die and lose all of her stuff. has heard stories about the limits of the world borders and the farlands and is determined to find them. Good at avoiding hostile mobs but not at keeping herself alive so she tends to die from starvation or falls, senshi's most frequent visitor when she stocks up for her next excursion
chilchuck: started playing to understand the game better when his daughters got into it, now it's developed into a guilty pleasure. The one who supplies the rest of the gang with materials as needed, loves the grind of collecting a billion stacks of cobblestone and dirt. Goes to the end w laios just to collect endstone, same w the nether. Also responsible for keeping the chests meticulously organized, he gives everyone hell if they mess up his system
• marcille: not usually one for survival games but got hooked when falin showed her the redstone systems and potion making. Has made a machine for everything she possibly could, is currently figuring out a fast travel system in the nether so falin can go further than she normally can in the overworld. Relies on chilchuck to fund all of her projects bc she's deathly afraid of mining and getting blown up by creepers. Goes to the end w laios to see if she can expand on the teleportation mechanics of ender pearls (is very disappointed when she can't)
• kabru: joined at laios's request, secretly hated minecraft and preferred the sims but still plays because he found out that you can make your own collection of villagers to trade with and consequently became obsessed. Didn't know about the pillagers and almost rage quit when they killed his villagers and destroyed his progress while laios just tried to catch the ravager to add to his monster zoo. Now recruits laios whenever pillagers show up bc he doesn't want to deal with the raids
• izutsumi: banned for griefing when she lured a creeper into a wing of delgal's castle where she'd put a bunch of tnt
#chattering#dunmeshi#dungeon meshi#delicious in dungeon#laios touden#falin touden#thistle dungeon meshi#delgal#senshi of izganda#marcille donato#izustumi#kabru of utaya#sorry for the tag i just had a brain blast upon seeing that post LMAO#feel free to add more btw the post was too long for my brain so i stopped after izutsumi

ok but like, he would be a sweet big brother (and a minecraft veteran).
(reblogs are greatly appreciated, it helps get my content out there! if you guys like what you see, please reblog it too <:D)
he has a soft spot for the little fella — miles 42 x reader
you had to do the laundry and cook some dinner like your parents asked you to, and miles was down to help, but you insisted he could just sit back and watch over your little sibling. he didn't wanna make it known to you he had zero knowledge on babysitting so he just awkwardly sat down next to them. after a few minutes of silence, miles kept looking at your sibling from the corner of his eye, watching them play on their ipad, making sure they wouldn't fall over or do something stupid.
he decided to sit there in silence and look at his phone and wait for you to finish your chores, when all of a sudden, your younger sibling tapped his shoulder. he looked over at them and they moved closer to him, showing him the game on their screen. "oh, minecraft?" he asked the kid, and they nodded. "do you know how to make a fishing rod?" they asked him, their big doe eyes looking up into his own chestnut brown ones.
miles began to teach the kid how to craft the necessary items they needed, but the kid didn't stop there. they showed miles around their minecraft home, their horses and cows, and their dog. miles chuckled because the kid was so imaginative, so creative with their little minecraft home. "ey, invite me over sometime, will ya? i can play with you on your server when i get home." he offered the kid with a smile.
your little sibling beamed up at him. "you would?" they asked him, and he nodded, grinning all the while. "of course." your little sibling was overjoyed, they had never played with anyone else before, not until miles asked to play with them. they reached in to hug miles and thanked him happily for wanting to play with them. "i'll make you a big house! i'll put it by the lakes, oh! and i'll make an army of iron golems to protect you!" they exclaimed as miles ruffled their hair and chuckled lightly. "thanks little fella, i'll take you to the nether and we'll explore there, whaddya say?" he offered as your sibling smiled widely. "i've never gone there i'm so scared of the ghasts... please keep me safe, big bro!" they pleaded miles.
he had never been called that before, 'big bro'–it felt... gratifying, in a way. it felt rewarding, warm, and just overall good. he liked your little sibling, they were so sweet and they liked him too; he was worried your sibling might find him weird or too quiet, but not at all! he smiled and pinched your sibling's cheek playfully, with them giggling at the touch. "oh, you bet i will. those ghasts aren't ready for your big brother miles." he said with an air of confidence as your sibling was building a nether portal in creative mode for miles to play right now.
maybe he was a natural at this, maybe he just got lucky your sibling was so friendly and amicable–or maybe... he just happened to end up being a really good older brother figure for them, even if he had doubts in the beginning.

Alright so apparently there's a new update coming out for minecraft and it's about friendly ghasts. That's great and cute and adorable and all but it raises some questions because of how exactly it works.
so there've been some hints at there being more to Ghasts than we know, from the vestigial gills on their sides, to their constant misery, to the "uneasy alliance" achievement talking about "rescuing them" from the nether and bringing them "home" to the overworld.
This update reveals some crazy stuff about ghasts. Like, you can find these dried out baby ghasts husks near fossils, which come back to life if you soak them in water. Like a tardigrade. They grow over time, and grow faster if you feed them snowballs. Which is weird.
Ghasts grown up in this manner are vulnerable to fire and are unable to shoot fireballs.
What is weirder is that you can craft the little buggers in a crafting table. Out of bone blocks and ghast tears.
Why the hell are these flying ghost balloons made out of bones? Bones that aren't theirs? What the hell are ghast "tears" if they are used to reproduce? If ghasts need water and snow to grow up, how do they keep spreading in the nether?
Are they mechanical? Some consider the Mobeastiary to imply that they are. If so, then what the hell is a ghast tear? If it were artificial, we'd assume that it'd be something one could acquire elsewhere and then use to build a ghast. But no, ghasts are the main if not only source of ghast tears in Minecraft, and it takes more tears to make a baby ghast than you can harvest from a grown-up ghast.
Are they undead? The wither doesn't attack them, so, maybe! I mean apparently they're made of bones so this seems entirely reasonable to me! But no! If they were undead, then healing potions would kill them!
Are they alive? You can make them on a goddamned crafting table. Out of bones. YOU tell ME if it's alive.
The ghast tears are used to make potions of regeneration. Which seems out of place. But you wanna know something about happy, healthy ghasts that get raised with water? When they fly to Y195, they just get the regeneration status effect! What the fresh hell is this!
They need water to function! There is no water in the nether! What is bringing the ghasts to life?
My going theory is that they're some kind of colony coral-like creature that nests in and dissolves bones into a stretchy gelatinous mass that they then inflate with some buoyant gaseous byproduct of the reaction, and that they usually need to be submerged in water for this. The "tears" are actually the living organism, and the ghast we know is just a puppet. Like a tardigrade or one of those frozen arctic worms, a ghast "tear" colony can remain dormant for decades or even centuries before being revived. Somehow, something in the nether is co-opting this process. Maybe if they wind up "infesting" wither skeleton bones by accident their husk winds up animating on its own, consumed by infernal malevolence? It'd explain the explosive breath and the indifference of withers, but if that were the case, I'd expect it to inflict the wither effect instead of just fire. Maybe they wind up using lava or volcanic fumes or nether rack or soul sand instead of water to catalyze the process, which would explain the flammability and irritability, but not anything else.
The "ghast warn" sound name might imply that the ghasts don't want to kill you at all and are giving you a heads up to dodge their body's attacks, potentially adding credence to the wither possession theory, or perhaps they're just making a threat display.
Anyway. These freaking things. Freaking weird.
