Hi! I saw your post about assuming all Westerns were racist, and as someone who is wayyy too into old movies I think I can shed some light on that. Honestly? It's a good assumption. The roots of typical Western movies (think J*hn W*yne) are very racist and almost never allow for nuance or treat the Wild West like a multifaceted complex region with multiple Indigenous tribes who had different experiences with settlers. They're about the "good guys" defeating the "bad guys." (1/?)

so i'm not surprised, but it would have been nice to be wrong about this one, you know? i don't think i've ever seen a genuine western - just parodies and references - but i get the sense that they tend to be about white colonizers fighting amongst themselves in a way that romanticizes their own problems while suppressing and ignoring the deep harm done to indigenous people and the land. also, the whole concept of "the west" is based in imperialist ideas, so.

what you've described with "good" vs "bad" guys really fits well with my understanding there. there may be bad cowboys in westerns but i'm assuming they're portrayed as "bad apples" rather than colonizers participating in a centuries-long and ongoing pattern of genocide.

sorry, side note: i taught my high school students a unit on genocide last year. they read through multiple definitions of genocide, and then we created a list of criteria for genocide as a class. then they had to read through six examples of actual genocides (with identifying names, locations, and dates removed) and decide if they qualified as genocide based on the criteria we came up with. you know how many defined the treatment of indigenous americans as genocide? every single fucking one. they're right, of course, but it was so unexpected in a rural majority-white community where most students had no idea that c*lumbus had done anything wrong.

i wonder how the prevalence of westerns affects the white american understanding of past-as-past. the belief that things happened a long time ago but it's all over now! i wonder if westerns (and historical fiction more broadly) feed that idea. i'll go out on a limb and guess that few westerns are doing flash-forwards to the present that examine how the protagonists' actions continue to harm indigenous people.

as far as the issue of racist representation vs full native erasure, i absolutely can't speak to that. it has given me a lot to think about though!

Honestly we should have expected this from a cursed grail, someone out there had to have wished for more child servants to adopt so the monkeys paw curled and now this is what we get. being homeschooled sucks for a whole lotta reasons but one of them is that ppl are always like “oh [insert book] is required reading for highschool students you aren’t special for liking it” my required reading was this book abt queen isabella (the c*lumbus one) and the two (middle-aged, female) writers fetishised her ‘purity’ to the extent of glossing over everything else so they could ramble on about how all the men in her life wanted to fuck her but she loved jesus too much.
