the voyage home: a heist movie

okay i was watching the one with the whales again (because it SLAPS) and i realized that it’s basically a heist movie?? i mean, it has the premise of a time travel movie, but it’s a heist movie about STEALING WHALES and bringing them to the FUTURE.

so i’ve been assigning the crew oceans eleven-type heist roles. i would draw them but alas, ‘tis not in my skillset. if anyone wants to draw this, i would love to see it.

i mean, pretty self-explanatory, i think. kirk’s putting in the WORK to get those whales. he’d be better at it if spock didn’t keep calling him “admiral” and using colourful language improperly, but he’s not his husband’s boyfriend’s colleague’s keeper, is he?

i mean, the man gets to fly a helicopter! also, he’s in charge of yelling out what warp factor they’ve reached, so i think that counts.

listen, i didn’t say he was good at it. but he did help uhura with the nuclear wessels plan, and he was surprisingly cool under pressure, despite falling off a cliff during the ensuing chase.

Montgomery “Scotty” Scott: The Brains

i can’t give this to anyone else. scotty made a whale tank! and figured out how to recrystallize dilithium using ‘80s tech! and he used a keyboard! fucking superb, you funky little engineer!

i don’t know how to properly articulate my thoughts about this one, only that i know it in my heart to be true. spock swims with whales and nerve pinches a loud punk on the bus. yes, he does math, but the rest of the time he is exuding peak himbo behaviour. i love him.

Leonard “Bones” McCoy: The Conman/Master of Disguise

this is very similar to the face, except mccoy’s better at it. look at those costumes! fabulous. he gets into character SO well here, and at the plexiglass factory. we STAN a competent king.

1. Medic he's feral. Absolutely manic. Fucking superb. Radiates neurodivergency and probably uses that as an exscuse for the brutal murders he commits. I am beyond words.

2. Heavy, I cannot enough emphasize how much joy he brings me he's so smart and so, so dumb at the same time, he's a walking enigma that will Fuck You Up and I love him. Just your massive protective lad.

3. Spy, yes he ranks higher than the bushman at the moment and I genuinely wish he did not but he's just so pathetic. This fucking coward. Piece of shit I love him tho. Was Super fun and easy to write as well I love that for him.

Here's where it starts ro deteriorate and the difference in how much I love them is like super tiny.

4. Engie, idk what's with me and Engie right now something about his almost cuddly demeanor + his ruthless killing just sends me and I'll fight people for him

5. Pyro almost had their spot stolen by Sniper but I think rn they rank higher because SUPERB. The exact opposite of Engineer, super intimidating to everyone but really just a sweetheart. So gender, never change Pyro.

6. SNIPER I feel so bad ranking him so low because I do love this antisocial little weirdo a whole bunch. The only reason Hale hasn't killed him for hippie behaviour is he's good at his job. Probably has the same diagnosis as me fuck yeah you go you superb little professional.

7. SOLLY M'BOY cause like sure, everyone's funny but this guy is FUNNY. all the best humour is his or his wife's I can't take him seriously and I adore him.

8. Zhanna, Heavy's (almost) equally funny sister who is exactly the same brand of Fucking Stupid as Soldier. Just like him she also has All The Good Jokes. She loves you and she loves America.

And everyone else is kinda on the same plane. Demo sadly isn't very memorable but I still cherish him and include him as much as I can, Scout is absolutely batshit and that's good for him (so much adhd) but as with Spy I refuse to acknowledge the game version of him a good 60% of the time, Miss Pauling is very funky and is the third character on this list that Definitely Has Autism which is a bonus. She deserves a break and also the whole world. Love her. I can't remember any of the other characters – except Chevy and he's a c–

1) yuugi. game fiends. standing weekly appointments to play games. yuugi is always a sympathetic ear and kaiba is always challenging him to take his game design to inspired new heights

2) atem, especially as back from the dead and absolutely thriving with the new life he can make for himself, untethered to history and destiny, hand-crafted exactly how he wants, and kaiba is VERY curious to see what he comes up with, so atem knows he can always text kaiba and be like, “let’s go to burning man next year” and kaiba’s like, fucking superb, you funky little pharaoh

3) isis, as like, drinking buddies. they hit up domino’s fanciest wine bar and she laughs as he complains about mokuba hitting his rebellious teen phase. sometimes rishid comes too, and he tries to give more serious advice, but on two glasses of wine isis is a chatterbox and kaiba is moodily eating grissini

4) anzu, because she’s always giving him shit, but if he asked for a chance, she’d give that to him in a heartbeat. they don’t really “hang out” but he always makes a point of taking her out to dinner or catching a show whenever he’s in new york and it makes her feel bizarrely awkward sometimes, but she appreciates it

Hmmm I have been looking into the Boston & Maine Railroad for Reasons™ and reading about this is breaking my heart, like passenger rail service basically stopped being viable in the 1920s because of automobiles and most of the rail network is gone at this point, which makes me want to bite things, but also I’m looking at maps of what the lines used to be and yes I do get that this was the only form of transport but I would kill a man to get extensive rail service between Boston, Montreal, Halifax, and most of Vermont/New Hampshire/Western Mass the way that it was when these lines were in service. Like idk we talk a lot about how we want to make sure that rural areas are also served by public transit and that we want rail lines to more areas of the country and stuff and I’ve heard criticism about the disturbance/difficulty of creating those lines but the lines are literally there!!! There is infrastructure in place that you can build new lines over and it’ll serve the whole entire Northeast and it makes me so angry that we don’t get to have that because Cars™
