HEADCANONS - B.OOTH.ILL'S BODY
Tumblr media
figured it was about time i put this into a proper post, bc it's come up during discussion several times now & i need a place to gather the scattered thoughts i have on his cyborg body, so... here we go-
COMPLEX CIRCUITRY
so i mostly want to talk about the fact that he isn't just bits of metal and wires, that there's actually a lot of complex (and expensive) mechanisms and systems that keep him running, because at the base of it all, this body still needs to keep him alive. he may not have physical organs below the neck, but his brain still needs oxygen, still needs blood to deliver the oxygen (or at the very least, something that mimics blood to serve the same purpose). it isn't a simple case of him being an organic head on a metal body.
encased within the outer plates and protected by a steel 'skeleton' are mechanical alternatives to living organs: he has a heart, he has lungs - he even has something akin to a digestive system, although it doesn't work in quite the same way. we know this man canonically consumes liquids, so he must have a way to process them without him sloshing about like a thermos flask. the mechanical heart & lungs, obviously, are to keep his brain alive and fed with the nutrients and oxygen it requires - he has an entire system within his torso to mimic the natural functions of the organs needed to clean, filter, and cycle the blood through where it needs to go.
obviously, he doesn't need quite as much blood as a full human, and there are several systems in place that can regularly monitor both the condition of the blood and the volume he carries with him. he will be alerted the moment any issue is detected and, should he suffer a wound above the neck and experience any blood loss, he does need to essentially "top up" the volume - not unlike when your car runs out of fuel. he usually carries a stash of the blue blood he requires in a special fridge on his ship for this purpose (this blood is almost identical to organic blood, functions the same way, etc).
as well as mechanical organs, he has a complex system of nerves attached to every metal plate on his body, made from wires as thin as - and as strong as - spider silk. whilst these wires cannot fully mimic the function of organic nerves, they allow him to feel sensations such as temperature and touch - and pain. he needs to know when parts of his body are damaged, after all, and you can't rely on sight alone with something this complicated. the sensations he feels are greatly dulled in comparison to a fully human body: a minor temperature shift won't register, for example, but going rapidly from hot to cold will be more obvious. the same is true of pain - he is more likely to react simply from impact rather than any actual feeling of pain, but he will feel a particularly damaging blow (pain above the neck is felt to the same degree as it would have prior to his transformation, as the nerves there remain intact).
circling back to the digestive system he possesses, because it leads on to another piece of the puzzle that i know already has some, uh... spicy headcanons knocking around out there, and i can't avoid the topic forever. BUT FIRST, let me remind us all again that this man canonically drinks liquids. whether it's actual fuel or alcohol, we know he enjoys consumption of fluids, and, well... it's gotta go somewhere, otherwise this man will be sloshing around like a watering can. so, whilst his "digestive system" doesn't actually function in the same way a regular human's would, it does filter the liquid through his body, soaking up anything that is beneficial to the remaining organic parts of his body, and dumping the rest (he does, in fact, have to consume special drinks containing nutrients he needs to feed his brain, among other things).
and... yes, he has to have a means of expelling the waste liquid. i'll get to that at the end.
we also know (or assume, at least, from in-game evidence) that he only eats bullets (and may or may not be able to produce them, if not store them to bring back up later, like the lil weirdo he is). i, personally, like to think he stores them inside of him, rather than makes them (this is something i'm still cooking on, however, so this may change).
UPGRADES
i want to move on to a couple of small things before i (reluctantly) address the spicy topic - namely, his eyes and his teeth. now, prior to 2.6, i had it down that his teeth were always sharp and pointed. even though there is evidence in-game that this may not be the case, i have made the decision to stick with this headcanon because... well, i like it, and you can't stop me. fuck canon in this instance. they were, however, coated with a substance to protect them - this man does drink fuel, after all, as well as chomp bullets. pretty sure neither of those things are good for teeth. so, whilst they are his own teeth, they have been altered to better fit the needs of his new body.
as for his eyes - first of all, yes, he absolutely still has both of them. until we have canon evidence that the covered one is missing, that's the hill i'm on. why is it covered? you'll have to ask him yourself (but he may not answer truthfully). they are, however, altered from their original state - obviously this man wasn't born with crosshairs (though this wouldn't necessarily be a stretch in this universe). his vision has been greatly enhanced to afford him greater accuracy at distance, and his right eye (the covered one) has an extra ability: by closing the left and focusing his vision, he essentially activates a kind of scope to even further improve accuracy and gain greater visibility at distance. boothill, what do your cyborg eyes see?
STOP STALLING, DARN IT
okay, okay... it's time to talk about what mr hill has in his pants. now i want to first stress incredibly loudly that this body of his is built solely to be a weapon, and that is definitely all he had on his mind when he underwent the transformation. people can hc however they wish, but i refuse to believe that boothill - or the people who gave him this body - went in there with any intentions to give him working parts. also have you seen how tight those pants are? where would it be?? that's just not something he would even consider, because it's not important to him. or, at least, it wouldn't have been at the time - nothing else mattered to him then except his revenge.
i mentioned earlier that he does, of course, need a means of expelling the waste liquid he consumes, and yes - he has something for this function. and whilst i hate that i've had to put considerate thought into this particular part of his body, i've come to the conclusion that whilst it somewhat resembles a natural organ (though not entirely, as it doesn't need to), it certainly isn't just sitting there all the time. it is, in fact, something he can release from a compartment between the legs for the purpose of expelling said waste liquid from his system. trust me, he's not keeping anything out all the time in pants that tight.
and that is the only function it serves. there's no particular sensation, there's no means of altering its state. whilst this might be a shame to anyone wishing to romance the cyborg, trust me - he has other means of delivering his end of the deal that don't require him to have a goddamn dick. could i see him considering getting some further upgrades if he was in a long-term relationship? perhaps. but, really - and i'm not knocking people who have differing opinions, to each their own - it's really just not necessary.

The Basis of the Environmental Crisis
There is a fundamental problem here: The dynamics of capitalism have an inherent tendency towards ecological devastation. To understand why this is so, we need to look at how firms are constantly searching for ways to minimize their expenses. This is how they ensure the firm can make the maximum in profits. Because capitalism is made up of relatively autonomous firms, they are in competition. If a firm doesn’t continuously seek ways to make profits, they won’t be able to expand their business, move into new markets, invest in new technology. Other firms will out-compete them. And minimizing expenses is central to the pursuit of profits. Thus minimizing expenses is central to survival for the capitalist firms. And to do this, firms do cost-shifting at the expense of both workers and the environment.
First, companies try to keep compensation to workers as low as they can get away with. They may look to cut taxes that support services working class people rely on. They try to find new forms of technology or new ways to organize the work that reduces the number of worker hours it takes to produce a unit of output. They might automate a production operation with robots, or they will seek ways to intensify work through “lean production” methods. For example, they’ll use computer tracking of a warehouse worker picking items for an order so that they have no rest time after finishing an order but are pushed to a new task through computer control. Work intensification and computer monitoring puts workers under more stress which can have damaging health effects over time. This means the employers are imposing a human cost on workers. If workers in a furniture factory are constantly breathing in finishes or paints being sprayed on furniture in the open, or electronics assemblers are breathing in solder fumes, these are also cases where capital is shifting costs onto workers. And these are cases where the costs could be avoided. For example, there are soldering tools that have a vacuum to suck off solder fumes so workers don’t breath it, but a firm may not want to pay the expense of installing that equipment. These are examples of how the capitalist mode of production tends to shift costs onto workers.
Second, emissions into the air and water are another form of cost-shifting. A utility firm may burn coal to generate electricity. This creates emissions that damage the respiratory systems of people in the region and also contributes to global warming. But the power firm is not required to pay anything for these damages. These costs to others from emissions are “external” to the market transaction between the power firm and its customers who pay for electricity. This is an example of a “negative externality.” Externalities are a pervasive feature of the capitalist mode of production. The fossil fuel industry generates many “negative externalities.” Fracking operations insert chemicals underground which can pollute the underground water sources. A large gas field or leaky oil refinery will generate large amounts of volatile organic compounds — including carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. Studies of gas fields show effects in the surrounding area such as goat herds and barn cats losing the ability to have viable offspring, due to the endocrine disruptors. Gas fields also contribute to global warming by leaking large amounts of methane. Contrary to gas industry claims, gas power plants contribute as much as coal-fired power plants to global warming due to all the methane leaks.
You’ll notice here that I’m focusing on how environmental devastation is rooted in production — not consumption. Some environmentalists try to suggest that we should understand the global warming problem by looking at consumption practices, and they use ideas like a person’s “carbon footprint” to focus on personal consumption. But consumers of electric power don’t have control over the decisions of power firms on the methods of electricity generation, or what technology firms rely on to move cargo around in the global supply chains.
Another useful concept here is throughput. The throughput of production consists of two things: (1) All the material extracted from nature for the production process, and (2) all the damaging emissions (“negative externalities”) from the production process. In addition to the damaging emissions into the air and water, capitalism is an extractivist regime with a long history of land-grabbing to minimize expenses — as in the US government handing over mineral wealth to mining companies, lands for commercial ranching and extraction of logs and wood debris from forests for the lumber and paper industries. The search for short-term profits can lead to unsustainable practices such as clear-cutting of forests or use of huge nets to scarf up all the fish in a coastal region without regard to the future of that fishery.
With the concept of throughput, we can define a concept of ecological efficiency. If a production process is changed in ways that reduce the amount of damage from emissions (or amount of extracted resource) per unit of human benefit, then that change improves ecological efficiency. And here is a basic structural problem of capitalism: It has no inherent tendency towards ecological efficiency. If nature is treated as a free dumping ground for wastes, there will be no tendency to minimize damaging emissions per unit of human benefit from production. Also, there will be no tendency to minimize materials extracted from nature except to the extent firms have pay for these resources.
A production system that could generate increasing ecological efficiency would tend towards reductions in pollution and resource extraction. This would require a non-profit, non-market type of eco-socialist economy where production organizations are held socially accountable — required to systematically internalize their ecological costs. Capitalism’s tendency to ever greater environmental devastation happens because firms have an incentive to not internalize their costs, but dump them on others.
The devastation wrought by the cost-shifting dynamic of capitalism is not limited to global warming. Capitalism has favored the evolution of agricultural practices that aim at highest output at lowest financial cost to the firm. Intense competition has led to ever-greater concentration in ownership of farm land. The capitalist setup allows the growers to rely on labor contractors to pay laborers as little as possible and get rid of workers who try to organize. Growers often own lands in various locations and pursue different crops to minimize their risks. With encouragement from the chemical industry, growers have adopted industrial production of a single crop in a large field with increasing usage of pesticides and inorganic fertilizer over time. Inorganic fertilizers typically provide some mix of nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium. Over-use of these fertilizers has led to excessive runoff, polluting water courses and leading to ocean “dead spots” around the mouths of rivers. Destructive effects on fisheries is thus one of the negative externalities from capitalist agriculture.
Since World War 2 chemical pesticide production world-wide grew from 0.1 ton to 52 million tons in 1976 and 300 million tons in 2015. Pesticides produced by the chemical industry are damaging to the health of farm workers, and pollutes water courses, and leaves residues on food. Pesticide overuse also destroys the natural predators of insects and breeds pesticide-resistant pests. This leads a kind of agricultural arms race as more and more pesticide is needed. As Fred Magdoff and Chris Williams report in Creating an Ecological Society, pesticides also reduce “presence in the soil of organisms that stimulate plants to produce chemicals to defend themselves.”
As with pesticides the chemical industry has also vastly pumped up the production of petroleum-based plastics which do not biodegrade but end up as vast scourge of pollution in the oceans. Plastic bags have grown in use because they take a lot less energy to produce than paper bags, and thus cost less. Production has increased from less than 5 tons in 1950 to over 340 million tons by 2014, according to the Plastics Europe trade association. At least a third of all plastic produced is not recaptured, but mostly ends up in the ocean where it is destructive to living organisms. The plastics industry does not have to pay for the negative effects on living things in the oceans.
If we bring in our definition of throughput, pollution and dumping of wastes are one aspect, but we need to also look at the destructive extractivist tendencies in capitalism, such as clear-cutting of forests or over-fishing. According to a 2003 study, “90 percent of all large fishes have disappeared from the world’s oceans in the past half century,” since the onset of industrial fishing with huge nets in the 1950s. “”Whether it is yellowfin tuna in the tropics, bluefin in cold waters, or albacore tuna in between, the pattern is always the same. There is a rapid decline of fish numbers,” according to Ransom Myers, a fisheries biologist at Dalhousie University in Halifax. To address the problem, many countries have banned long drift nets and untended longlines, and have instituted elaborate systems of licensing, and have instituted quotas and third party observers working on boats. Nonetheless, capitalist fishing outfits frequently ignore or evade these rules.

"Building the Future: How 15-Minute Cities Can Transform India’s Urban Landscape"
India is fast emerging as a new land of opportunity, with many suggesting that the 21st century will witness a shift in the global order, placing India at the forefront. The government’s focus on infrastructure is a testament to this, as seen in the capital investment outlay of ₹11,11,111 crore in the 2024-25 budget—an impressive 11.1% increase from the previous year, making up 3.4% of the GDP. This substantial boost reflects the nation’s commitment to building a stronger, more resilient future.
However, it’s hard to ignore the strain on our cities, which feel like they are bursting at the seams, inching closer to an infrastructural tipping point. Many of these cities, built during colonial times, lack the fundamental urban planning or modern mapping needed for today’s demands. While there is no magical solution to these deeply rooted issues, and India—being a land of unique needs and adaptations—will never find a one-size-fits-all answer, it is a country that embraces innovation and customizes it to its own needs. But I digress.
The purpose of this piece is not to assign blame but to highlight potential solutions. One solution that shines through is the concept of 15-minute cities. A 15-minute city is designed so that all essential services—schools, healthcare, parks, financial institutions—are no more than a 15-minute commute by road.
Imagine a world where your daily commute takes no longer than 15 minutes. It’s a vision that not only promises work-life balance but also offers a much-needed environmental reprieve, with reduced fuel consumption and fewer emissions. The benefits of such a model are numerous:
Reduced Traffic Congestion: With less reliance on cars, traffic eases, resulting in shorter commute times, improved well-being, and a healthier work-life balance.
Cleaner Environment: Fewer cars on the road mean lower air pollution, contributing significantly to combating climate change.
Health and Social Bonds: Walking and cycling are encouraged, boosting physical health and strengthening social ties within the community.
Thriving Local Businesses: As people stay closer to home, local businesses flourish with increased foot traffic, creating a vibrant neighborhood atmosphere. Economic activity spreads evenly across the city, breathing new life into shops and services beyond central hubs.
Easier Access to Services: Essential services like schools, healthcare, and groceries become easily accessible, fostering inclusivity and easing the strain on public transportation.
Fostering Inclusion: This model ensures that no matter where someone lives, they have access to the same opportunities, creating a more inclusive and equitable city.
Resilience in Crises: A decentralized structure, with services spread throughout, helps cities adapt more effectively to challenges like pandemics or natural disasters.
GIS (Geographic Information Systems) plays a pivotal role in bringing the 15-minute city concept to life. By mapping out urban areas and analyzing spatial data, GIS helps planners identify where essential services are lacking and where improvements can be made. It enables efficient zoning, optimal placement of resources, and real-time monitoring of traffic patterns or environmental impacts. In a country like India, where cities are complex and densely populated, GIS offers a smart, data-driven approach to designing walkable neighborhoods, ensuring that every community has access to the amenities they need.
Admittedly, there are challenges. Implementing this in densely populated areas can be complex, potentially leading to gentrification and rising property values, which could displace lower-income residents. Additionally, some might resist the shift from car-dependent lifestyles. There is also the concern of limited job diversity within such a localized area. Yet, with the rise of remote work, job opportunities are increasingly flexible and accessible, allowing this issue to be overcome.
In India, where close-knit families and social networks often span across neighborhoods, this connectivity remains intact even as local living is prioritized. By creating more livable, walkable spaces, the 15-minute city model champions sustainability and inclusivity while addressing the ever-evolving demands of urban life.
In conclusion, while no solution is without its challenges, the 15-minute city offers a pathway toward more balanced, resilient, and harmonious urban living. As India continues to rise, this model could be a blueprint for a future where well-being, community, and sustainability take center stage in our cities.

Sustainable Farming Practices: A Pathway to Future Food Security
Tumblr media
In the face of growing global challenges such as climate change, population growth, and depleting natural resources, the need for sustainable farming practices has never been more critical. Agriculture remains the backbone of many economies, but traditional farming methods often contribute to environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, and soil erosion. To secure the future of food production, sustainable farming offers a transformative solution that balances productivity with environmental stewardship.
1. The Importance of Soil Health
Healthy soil is the foundation of sustainable farming. Through techniques such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and reduced tillage, farmers can improve soil structure, enhance its ability to retain water, and reduce erosion. The integration of organic matter into the soil also promotes the growth of beneficial microorganisms, contributing to long-term soil fertility.
2. Water Management: Reducing Waste and Preserving Resources
Effective water management is crucial for sustainable agriculture. Traditional irrigation methods often lead to water waste, but sustainable practices like drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and the use of drought-resistant crops can significantly reduce water usage. Precision agriculture technologies, such as soil moisture sensors, allow farmers to optimize water application, ensuring crops receive only what they need, when they need it.
3. Biodiversity: Enhancing Ecosystem Resilience
Biodiversity plays a key role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and improving the resilience of farming systems. By incorporating diverse crops and livestock, farmers can reduce the risk of pest outbreaks and diseases. Agroforestry, which integrates trees into farming systems, enhances biodiversity while providing additional income streams, such as timber and fruit production.
4. Reducing Chemical Dependency
Sustainable farming promotes the reduction of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, which can harm the environment and human health. Alternatives like integrated pest management (IPM) use biological control methods, such as beneficial insects, to manage pests. Additionally, organic farming methods focus on natural soil amendments and composting to enrich the land without harmful chemicals.
5. Renewable Energy in Agriculture
The shift to renewable energy sources is becoming an essential aspect of sustainable farming. Solar panels, wind turbines, and bioenergy can power farming operations, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Many farms are now integrating renewable energy technologies to achieve self-sufficiency while also contributing to environmental conservation.
6. The Role of Technology in Sustainable Farming
Advances in agricultural technology are playing a transformative role in sustainability efforts. Precision farming tools, such as GPS-guided tractors, drones for crop monitoring, and automated irrigation systems, help farmers optimize inputs and maximize efficiency. These innovations not only increase productivity but also minimize waste and environmental impact.
7. Promoting Local and Organic Markets
Sustainable farming goes hand in hand with the promotion of local and organic food markets. Supporting local farmers reduces the carbon footprint associated with food transportation and encourages the consumption of fresh, seasonal produce. Additionally, organic farming practices prioritize animal welfare, soil health, and chemical-free food production, contributing to a healthier food system.
Conclusion
Sustainable farming practices offer a viable solution to the challenges facing modern agriculture. By prioritizing soil health, efficient water use, biodiversity, and renewable energy, farmers can produce food in a way that safeguards the environment for future generations. The integration of technology further enhances the potential for sustainable farming to meet global food demands while reducing the ecological footprint of agriculture. The adoption of these practices is not just a necessity for the future of farming—it is a pathway to long-term food security and environmental sustainability.

I don't understand Laterano's exile policy for the Infected
While there are some issues on which I'll defend Laterano, or at least argue that people should consider their perspective, I can't defend them on this one.
Laterano has no apparent reason to be ignorant to how hard it is for the Infected to infect others.
The only knowledge their government seems to suppress is anything related to the nature of The Law as a machine (which no one but the pope seems to know anyway), and anything related to their origins as Sarkaz (which I can't remember if even the pope suspected), and possibly the full details of what a Fallen Sankta is.
With freedom of information exceeded only by the Durin, with internal security and societal trust matched only by the Durin, with a lack of monetary corruption, with all the wealth they have, and with a survival-based incentive to stay ahead of the academic curve on Terra, Laterano MUST have one of the best primary and secondary education systems on Terra.
And Terra's medical science has already determined there is little to no risk for the Infected spreading Oripathy until their corpses disintegrate.
Additionally, building and maintaining public facilities and services to accommodate for the death and impending explosions of the Infected should be extremely easy for the well-oiled bureaucratic machine of the Lateran state.
[Guiding Ahead] actually showed us how efficient they are at handling the untimely death of a total social recluse. Handling the corpse of a monitored Infected should be simple in comparison, especially given the level of cooperation Lateran citizens show with their civil servants.
The moral absurdity of the exile is only slightly mitigated by the fact that the exiles remain full legal citizens, with the government checking in on them to make sure they're not being oppressed wherever they've made their home away from home. But paying to monitor and protect citizens in exile should be just as expensive as accommodating them at home; probably more so.
Laws
There are three kinds of laws in Laterano:
"The Law" itself. The secret machine that enforces its own unspoken, unwritten dictates.
The law chosen by the state, which the majority of the people accept without revolt.
And the law that the people demand the government enforce.
The Sarkaz ban could easily be either the second or the third. The highest levels of the original state wanted to keep any Sarkaz from accidentally revealing the true origins of the Sankta, but the modern people also hate and fear the Sarkaz.
But I don't see why the Infected ban would be either.
The People
The Sankta do not fear feeling the emotions of other Sankta suffering from injury and disease; they maintain public hospitals. They have funeral homes and mourning practices.
Also, Laterans show no discomfort at all with authorized, scheduled explosions. They regularly blow up public property with Originium for fun. Controlling for the explosions of the dead Infected would be far less fun, but no less safe.
The continued existence of their civilization depends on the mining, refining, and consumption of Originium. Everything from maintaining Laterano's mobility as a nomadic city, to fueling their factories, to serving as the accelerant for their explosives and the ammunition of their precious Guardian Guns.
Even with the world's best safety practices and protections for miners and gunsmiths, accidents happen. That's how Arene became Infected and exiled -- his parents either made a lapse in their safety practices or something completely unexpected happened in the course of an experiment.
The Secret
We have at least two Infected Sankta at Rhodes Island -- Adnachiel and Arene.
Neither one of them show any sign of Sarkaz heritage because of their Oripathy. They haven't Fallen, they retain full halo-empathy, they could use Guardian Guns if they asked Executor to conduct the test for them, they haven't grown horns or tails...
And on top of that, Ambriel shows absolutely no signs of discomfort in their presence. But then, she joined Rhodes Island in the first place, and no Sankta would do that if they were afraid of Oripathy.
The Law
The Pope suggests that if the Law has a goal or agenda, it is to ensure the survival of the Sankta.
Could the Law be the reason that the government exiles the Infected? Perhaps it sees their proximity as too much of a threat?
But the Law apparently does nothing to punish or discourage the Sankta from accepting Liberi as fellow citizens.
(I doubt the Law is actively refusing to transform Liberi into Sankta. Because if the Law truly wanted to ensure the survival of the Sankta, there would be few better ways to do that than to transform as many willing converts as possible into Sankta, or at least to allow non-Sankta to have Sankta children.)
We know that Sankta can become Infected in Laterano without an immediate response from the Law. Arene did not Fall. Though it is possible that the earliest generations of Sankta noticed that Infected Sankta who remained too close to the Law would eventually Fall.
