So apparently, Netflix just straight up dropped the full Nimona movie on YouTube where anyone can watch it for free…
Don’t get me wrong, I am in no way complaining about this but, huh? Netflix this is so off brand for you, are you sure you want to just let people watch this without paying instead of scrubbing it from your streaming service completely and still raising your prices by another $2.00?

"Nimona" fandom informational rundown
New to the fandom and a bit confused about things? Hopefully this will help!
Tumblr media
Nimona was a webcomic by Nate Diana Stevenson/ND Stevenson that was first shown on tumblr on December 14, 2011, and Nate later launched it as an official webcomic on its own website on June 19, 2012. It was contracted for publication post-completion as a graphic novel sometime before November 1, 2012. The webcomic finished online publication on September 30, 2014. Shortly afterward, most of the webcomic was taken down as part of the contractual agreement for publication as a physical graphic novel, leaving only a short bit of the opening as a preview. The website for the webcomic later went down entirely, and is no longer accessible.
The comic was published in entirety as a single graphic novel on May 12, 2015. The movie adaptation rights were sold to Fox in 2015, as well, and the project was given to Blue Sky Studios. The comic was later adapted into a full cast audiobook on October 4, 2016. The graphic novel is available for purchase in paperback, hardcover, and as an ebook, and the audiobook is also available for purchase. (The link has international seller links). The graphic novel has been translated into 16 languages. It is also available in a special edition English hardcover via Illumicrate. They only ship from the UK, but ship internationally, and you don't need a subscription to buy the book. As the standard graphic novel and audiobook are ~7+ years old now, if you have a local library, you can see if either of them are available that way.
Disney bought 20th Century Fox Animation (later 20th Century Animation, the purchase completed in 2019), but later shut down Blue Sky Studios in 2021, cancelling the still-in-production movie. Crew worked on shopping the movie around for a new home after talks with Disney. The movie was later picked up and completed by Annapurna, DNEG, and Netflix, premiered June 14, 2023 in France, showed in select theaters starting principally on June 23, 2023, and released to general audiences on Netflix for streaming on June 30, 2023. I have more info on this here.
Tumblr media
In English, Nimona is voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz, Ballister Boldheart is voiced by Riz Ahmed, and Ambrosius Goldenloin is voiced by Eugene Lee Yang.
If you're looking for official merch, the movie soundtrack is up on multiple platforms, including YouTube, iOS, Spotify, and Amazon, and a vinyl version of the soundtrack was sold by iam8bit. There is an official humanoid Nimona plushie, a whale Nimona plushie, and a shark Nimona plushie, available via Gee and Hot Topic, as well as a variety of official shirts available via Hot Topic and Amazon (just search Brand: Nimona). Nate also still sells "Nimona" comic art on his INPRNT store.
Netflix released a free-to-read digital-only multimedia 358-page artbook for the movie (but took it down in March 2024). (It's also been released at least for crew/friends of crew(?) in physical release, so maybe it'll get mass release as a hardcover). Outside of this, a lot of the crew for the movie from both Blue Sky and DNEG have been releasing a ton of concept art and development stuff, and the cast and crew have been doing a lot of promotional interviews and videos going back through like April 2023, so there's a lot of material to look through on YouTube, tiktok, tumblr, twitter, Instagram, Facebook/Meta, and Vimeo, as well as various news and media sites. Nate is active on tumblr, his personal blog, twitter, and Instagram. Annapurna, DNEG, and Netflix also have multiple accounts on many platforms, including their own websites, YouTube, Facebook/Meta, and Twitter, and have been sharing clips and behind the scenes stuff.
Nimona actually has been added to a video game: Nimona was included as an event companion in SharkBite 2, a Roblox game.
If you're looking for fanworks, the fandom is active on most platforms, and has been ever since Nate started posting early art of the characters. Nate's talked at length in multiple places about how big the fandom was during the webcomic's publication. Mostly back then folks were very active in the Disqus comments on pages, which are a bit harder to find these days. There's a lot of the older comic fanart still circulating in different places (particularly tumblr, where the fandom was most active), some of which Nate reblogged. There is crossover between the comic and movie fandoms, as many fans of the comic love the movie and vice versa, and both fandoms are quite active. There is at least one active subreddit and fanwiki (and many others on assorted fantasy, comic, movie, and non-English language sites), as well as TV Tropes pages for both the comic and movie adaptation and a number of Discord servers.
For fanfiction, there are a ton of fics on Archive of Our Own in the comic tag and in the movie adaptation tag. There are also a number of fics on tumblr, some fics on fanfiction.net, and some on Wattpad. There are fanvids on tiktok, Instagram, and YouTube. There is fanart on tumblr, twitter, deviantart, instagram, and pixiv. There are cosplayers, meta analysts, roleplayers, music makers, and many other fanworkers

Nimona OC - Charlotte Swiftheart/Corova: An AU Drawing
Taps mic
Hey Nimona fandom, what's good. Hello to the new members we've gained since the movie dropped on YouTube for free. I'm Christine/Lassie and I have a Nimona OC that's very long running.
Original Post About Her, Most Recent Sketch (Also for this AU), Last Full Drawing of Her
This motherfucker took me almost ten full hours just to color it, so I hope you like it. I'm very proud of it.
Tumblr media
The Knight Charlotte AU is essentially just an AU where instead of allowing the Director to blackmail Charlotte into leaving, Charlotte and Ambrosius decide to just tell the kingdom they're related and expose the Director (leading to her arrest), so Charlotte ends up being able to stay a cadet and complete her knight training! She's around 18 here. Also, there's her sword design! Close-ups below the cut!
Face Close-Up:
Tumblr media
I'm much happier with her features than I was with the previous drawing. I stared at Ambrosius's face for a really long time to get her features right (I think they're right).
Sword Close-Up:
Tumblr media
I really like this sword and it's also the sword that "canon" Charlotte carries! I drew it and I went "look at her gay little sword" because, if you didn't know, Charlotte is a giant lesbian.
A small detail...
Tumblr media
Nimona! Bird Nimona is watching through the window. I like to think that she doesn't really like knights very much, but she thinks that Charlotte and Ballister are cool because they're breaking the system.
Lovely tagged people:

Okay fine I’ll do one of these (because I like to talk about myself hehehe). Thanks @roboobin for tagging me B)
A very long ‘get to know me’ post below…
Last song: Apparently it was ‘Two Time’ - Jack Stauber, according to Spotify? I’ve also been relistening to a few tracks from Falsettos all day, for some reason. ‘I’m Breaking Down’ got stuck in my head somehow. I’m not super big on musical theater, but I LOOOOVE Falsettos and especially Trina :) You can probably tell I have a certain type of favorite characters/media lol.
Favorite color: Light greyish blue (or white, grey, silver, orrrr light greyish green?)
Last movie: I actually have no idea. Maybe Nimona with my IRLs a few months ago? I almost NEVER watch movies in full because I get bored of them easily. Sorry I know that’s so lame lololol
Currently watching: A commentary YouTube video to use as background noise while I do my writing assignments lol. Like I said, I don’t really watch a lot of movies or TV :/
Currently reading: Nothing, unfortunately! I haven’t read any books/stories in an embarrassingly long time :( I am so ridiculously busy and haven’t had the time/motivation to read and get invested in new characters. I have a bunch of series I want to reread for nostalgia purposes, though. I’m also strangely tempted to read the Animorphs series? LOL. I looked it up on AO3 for the first time a few months ago while in the kids’ section of the library with my IRLS and we were assessing the popularity of kids’ books based on the amount of AO3/Wattpad fics (btw, there are a shockingly low amount of Geronimo Stilton fics in the world). I wasn’t expecting there to be an Animorphs fandom, but there IS? And the fics are really GOOD even though I don’t know the source material? Anyway. Tempted to read it because I like putting teens in situations /lh. Also I want to read more short stories! Send me recommendations, if you have any.
Last thing I googled: This is so embarrassing. ‘Bathroom cruising’ LMAOOOO. I was just writing a funny bit, but I wanted to make sure it was accurate, okay? T_T Other recent searches include my voice lesson Lieder, various areas I’ve felt pain recently (because I’m a hypochondriac /lh), and a vlog I had to watch for my job… I was writing an article about it.
Sweet/spicy/savory: Savory. Every time. I love savory foods, and they’re basically the only types of food I ever crave. Then I would go with spicy, but only if it’s spicy in a flavorful way (and not just a painful way). I don’t like sweet foods except for chocolate—and, even then, I am infamous among my friends and acquaintances for only liking SUPER dark chocolate… like 70% cocoa or more. I would say my favorite flavor profile is bitter! :)
Current obsession: I think y’all already know :^) I am incapable of having more than one strong interest at once, soooo DnDads has quite literally been occupying my brain since liiiike October 2022… almost a year ago now! o_o Holy shit. I’ve been really busy with work and school in the past month or so, so I haven’t done basically anything else in my free time. I’d like to start cross stitching again because I have some projects to finish, and I got some of my late grandmother’s jewelry-making supplies recently, so I’ll toy around with that, too.
Currently working on: Like, right this second? Discussion post replies for my Writing in Digital Environments course :p In general? As far as hobbies go, the beginnings of my next longfic chapter! As far as work goes, I’m working on article about a mural. I have to drive like 30 mins to get a features image for it tomorrow ugh. At least I get to kill time on the clock :’)
I don’t want to tag anyone in particular, but, obviously, if you want to do this, you can just say I tagged you. Shhh I won’t tell ;) hehehe

NIMONA director Troy Quane has said that he's more than open to revisit the world of his and Nick Bruno's ND Stevenson adaptation.
Right now, NIMONA is free to watch on YouTube, ahead of its run for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and on the heels of two Annie Awards wins.
To the Cartoon Base twitter, Quane said:
"After spending so much time crafting these characters and building the world of the medieval future you can’t help falling in love with them. They go from being creative constructs to real individuals with real emotional connections to each other as well as us as creators! I’d gladly spend more time with these new friends we’ve made and discover what adventures lie ahead for them beyond the walls of the Kingdom. With someone like Nimona the possibilities are literally endless!"
While I think NIMONA works so well as a standalone film, another adventure with these two and a few others would make for a good time! More of that world, more things Nimona herself can shapeshift into, lots of possibilities that expand beyond the source material.
I think it could happen...
Netflix has been doing the animated feature thing for a little while, starting in full with Sergio Pablos' KLAUS. While they've made some blunders along the way (such as canning Pablos' next feature, EMBER, among many other potentially great projects), they did score some bangers. Luckily, NIMONA was first and foremost an Annapurna Animation production that was released by Netflix. Annapurna Animation is now basically Blue Sky 2.0, they have three features lined up, too. Who's to say they and Netflix can't do a NIMONA 2?
Also, Netflix is working on a sequel to the 2022 animated hit THE SEA BEAST... So again, that's doable.
The day a NIMONA sequel is announced, that would be so lovely. Here was a film that got cancelled by a major corporation (Disney) during production, but instead of being locked away or made into an unreleasable "tax write-off" that no one would ever see, former Disney CEO Bob Chapek still had the decency to offload the picture to somebody else. That's when Annapurna swooped in, and after some hard work, they got the feature back on the rails with Netflix. And then... A sequel! Talk about the movie that refused to die!
If only the same could've happened for SCOOB! HOLIDAY HAUNT and COYOTE VS. ACME, among others. Some movies are lucky to survive, let alone so sequels and continuations.
So yeah, if Quane is down, make it happen!

Do you have advice for someone who wants to make comics?
Yes! This is my advice!
Tumblr media
okay real advice
1. JUST DO IT
MAKE A COMIC!!! It doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t have to be technically good! It can be some stick figures and some word bubbles all that matters is you make it!! All you need is some paper, a pencil, and a story and your set! The only way to start doin something is to do it so make your first comic!! and then make more!!
2. Read Scott McClouds Books
If you are interested in comic theory and history and technical stuff, check out Scott McClouds books, Making Comics and Understanding Comics. I’ve been in school for comics and tbh, most of the stuff I was taught in school was stuff I already knew either from experience or from these books.
3. Study Film and cinematography
comics are just a really slow movie, when you design pages, think about them like a film. Most shots in comics match up with film, you got ur long shots, ur mid shots, ur close ups, ur super close ups, ur dutch angles, all that jazz. Once you have an idea of cinematic theory, then you’ll start to get a better understanding of storytelling through sequential images. And even some film techniques that might seem like you can’t do them in a non moving medium are feasible in a comic, like a long take, You can mimic the feel of a long take by having a single wide panel that your characters traverse through with out any edges or gutters. Or if you want to linger on something and really dial in on the emotion, you can do a short sequence where you focus on the minute changes in a characters expression or the environment. Like, a lot of film transfers over to comics and vice versa, there’s lots of videos about it on youtube analyzing different directors and how they do shots, but also videos about what NOT to do and what makes for a bad film.
4. Think about text.
Comics don’t need text, there are plenty of silent comics, but many comics involve the implimentation of text. IT’S SUPER IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT HOW UR GONNA IMPLEMENT UR TEXT! when you’re planning think about where the text is going to go, what font/hand lettering style you plan to use, all that jazz. Cause it’s easy to get caught up in the art and forget about the words, I’ve made like, 150+ pages and I still do this sometimes.
6. Read comics!
A lot of what I do comes from stealing panel layouts and shots from other people, wether that be from film or from other comics. If you want to check out one of the most well done and polished comics ever made, check out Matt Fractions Hawkeye, specifically the David Aja issues. The way Aja illustrates a page is masterful and even outside of comic nerds, is absolutly worth the read even if you aren’t into super heroes (hawkeye was already my favourite before I read these and I will never forgive the MCU for what they’ve done to him) but there are lots of other comics and graphic novels out there! Here’s just a few I really love and regularly steal from, Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me, Bloom, Maus, Saga, Full Meta Alchemist, Nimona, Fun Home, and My Lesbian Experience with Lonliness. When you read them really pay attention to the way the artist/author formulates the pages, everyone has their own system for layouts, some people have formulaic grids that they do for every page (MLEwL has an exclusive 3 wide panel layout that rareley, if ever, change, where as LDKBUwM have more fluid panel lay outs with floating panels and variations in gutter width to express time and mood, Aja uses a more grid layout and almost never breaks edges which give his a more rigid feel that goes well with his ink block art style) For TWSHLB, I have a p strict 6 block grid rule set i follow for  layouts, which i do mostly for time because I don’t thumbnail it, I just go. But yeah, read comics, think about comics, really really look at what you like in a comic and what you don’t and figure out why. and then steal like a fiend.
7. Turn ur fav fics into comics
If you want to start making comics but don’t know what to write about, pic your favourite scene from your favourite fic and turn it into a comic (also show the author, they love that) It’s good practice, it’s super fun, AND it makes authors real happy! Another thing you can do to practice is taking scenes from movies and turning them into comics, paying attention to the shots that are used and when.
okay, TLDR:
If you want to make a comic, then make one. the hardest part of doing comics is starting. It’s scary and kind of daunting, it’s hard! A lot of people don’t start making comics cause they’re scared they’ll make a bad one, and here’s the thing. Your first comic is gonna be wonky, it’s not gonna be technically perfect. But you made it! You made a comic! And that’s a lot farther than most people ever get!
I hope this helps If anyone has any other questions about comics feel free to shoot em my way, I am always ready to talk about comics! And if you want to show me a comic you made send it my way!! I want to see!! Continue makin em my dudes!
