Bruce Conner (McPherson, Kansas, 1933–San Francisco, 2008) is legendary as much for his critical view of the art world as for his reputation as the father of the video clip. He is one of the outstanding artists of the second half of the twentieth century and has even been hailed as an ‘artist‘s artist’. His work is political and subversive and is expressed through various media, which makes him a transversal artist who travels through assembly, drawing, painting, collage, photography and cinema.

La Fundació Dalí col·labora en el projecte titulat Museus i Liceu: una història compartida que el Gran Teatre del Liceu presenta avui dia 15 de març. La iniciativa té per objectiu estrènyer els vincles del Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona amb museus, col·leccions, biblioteques, arxius i centres…

Anna Maria Maiolino is a Brazilian artist, working with a wide range of disciplines and media, including drawing, printmaking, poetry, film, performance, installation, and sculpture.

In 1942 in the midst of World War II, Maiolino was born in Scalea in southern Italy to an Italian father and Ecuadorian mother. She and her family emigrated to Venezuela in 1954, and then to Brazil in 1960. She lived briefly in New York City between 1968 to 1971, but since then, Brazil has been her home. Her work often reflects her journey on both political and linguistic passages from Italian to Spanish, and then to Portuguese.

Maiolino’s work is sensuous and playful, as evidenced in her clay pieces with each fold and crease made by the artist’s hand.

“My first contact with clay in 1989 provoked a storm inside me. Plunging the hand into the wet mass of the earth – clay matter –, immediately an entire worldview was present. The clay, as we know, is the prototype matter, an archetype par excellence in our culture. A film in which the artist is shown trying to write while the rain constantly washes away the ink.

Text:

I hate movements that displace the lines. If I make a film, for a genre still defined as the discipline of movement, I have to repeat Baudelaire’s verse, unless…

1. … I don’t make the film and at the same time accept the value of the unused film, the filmmaker’s blank page, and pray that someone else makes it.

2. … I make the film at the expense of hate. A love film for instance. This is highly enticing but involves the risk of serving as a banner for a wide range of merchandise —advertising and propaganda films, pornography, prohibited films…

3. … I set aside the problems of film-specific language and consider the film as a simple reference to a type of abstraction.

Thus, in certain aspects of conceptual art the film is often a banal intermediary in which the idea plays the role of the main subject matter. But doesn’t the subject seem shrunken by that conventionalism of transmission style, if not absorbed and relegated to a rarely original documentary of hackneyed ideas?

… The new image techniques rather than those of film (laser) enable us to find a solution — fleeting I fear — which is indeed interesting.

But you have to be immersed in the world of technology to use this type of medium with any success. And here I find myself cruelly split between something immobile which has already been written and the comic movement that animates at 24 images per second.
