My favourite moments from Funimation Con 2020 - day one
Finding out that Justin Briner has been smack talking all the others in the MHA OJ 2 esports tournament and constantly asking if they've been practicing
Caitlin Glass' story about being on Baccano with J Michael Tatum and both of them having to shake their hands really aggressively to make it sound like they were on a cobblestone road
Right Stuf making the preposterous claim that there's at least $3 worth of merch in their warehouse at one time (don't lie to us... we know it's 5)
The tour guide spending his time messing around on a forklift, squeaking rubber duckies and showing us the jar of the Ashes of Problem Customers, as well as yeeting a collector's set with a glass in it from the top of the warehouse to show how good their packaging is
"I'm so mad I just sizzled myself"
"If I don't make a sound when I'm blinking, am I really blinking"
A trailer for Chainsaw Man on the Shonen Jump panel that just said "chainsaw" over and over again for a minute or two
Christopher Sabat claiming that he got the part of All Might because the director gave him a piece of her hair in the corridor and told him to eat it
"She's brilliant at casting... because she cast me, pretty brilliant am I right"
Justin Briner's vigilante name being "The Big Bad Brian" (for God knows what reason)
Chris' answer to what other MHA character he'd voice if he had to choose a different one - "I'd like to be Bakugo but I don't really want to scrape blood off my vocal chords"
"I had a bad time at my own panel"
J: "I ask him what I want for lunch" C: "He's actually broadcasting from a shed in my back garden"
Justin's quirk apparently being that he can boost nearby Wi-Fi signals by 1000% but he has to make old modem dialup noises for it to work (which he demonstrated wonderfully)...
...And Chris' being that he can whistle at the right pitch to summon koalas and his breath smells like eucalyptus
Jad Saxton telling Tia Ballard, without laughing, that in this episode Nene was going to meet "a couple types of ghostypoos"
Tyson Rinehart introducing us to his home recording booth with "come along my children, let me tell thee a tale... a tale of anime"
"THIS IS- BLEHHHHH"
Ian Sinclair complaining that it's hard to record because "everyone loves to mow their lawn at 10am"
Emily Neves enjoying being the mirror version of Aoi because it let her be a Mean Girl for a bit
Apparently if Aoi found Akane on a dating app she would say "3 points" and swipe left
Aaron Dismuke describing Natsuhiko as a 'middle school wannabe chad' (accurate)
"Mitsuba's too pure for this world... it works out because he's not in it anymore... I shouldn't have said that-"
His summary of the story of the Wendigo being "Don't eat people. That's bad. And this will happen in case the 'that's bad' wasn't enough"
Tia's new nickname for Nene being "Nene Legs-Totally-Don't-Look-Like-Daikons Yashiro... periodt"
Finding out that Justin's scared of the deep sea too (I'm not alone!) and Megumi Ogata's yorishiro would be the smiles of her fans (I died of wholesomeness... her favourite characters are the Mokke too)
Megumi also thinking that all her roles (including Itona, Nagito and Naegi) would make good Mysteries
Luci Christian choosing Momo's quirk as most useful during quarantine because "I have two kids in the other room trying to be quiet, if I could pull a trampoline out of my body that would be great"
Christopher Wehkamp's favourite Aizawa line being "uuuuuuuugh"
One of FLOW's members having a greenscreen background and another saying "one of us has wandered off to the Amazon river"
Vibing to Colors before logging off for the night because it was nearly 11 by that point
Can't wait for day two to start later!!

General Franky from One Piece // Cosplayer : MaxedOutCosplay // Photo : a.q.photographs
Everyone that I interacted with was super hyped that someone made Franky Shogun. Apparently there weren’t many running around. I did make it to the Rave on Friday night and once I got in everyone started chanting “Franky ! Franky ! Franky !”
One awesome thing that happened outside of the con was that I got invited to a One Piece photo shoot at Anime NYC this November. A rep from the Funimation and Viz Media both reached out to me on Instagram and offered to fly my wife and I up to attend. So I’m pretty stoked about that.
Tumblr media
Honestly, I’ve been trying to complete Franky for the better part of three years and the only real inspiration to make him came from my love of the anime One Piece and my furious need to make huge cosplays. As for why I took him to Katsucon, it was purely because my wife and I are on staff each year and once I put two and two together I buckled down at the beginning of January 2020 and cranked him out in less than a month.
Franky was put together mostly with hot glue. My normal adhesive is barge contact cement but, I had limited funds after buying the eva foam so I had to make due with what i had on hand.
Tumblr media
The main soup can of Franky is constructed of 3 hula hoops with 8 sheets of EVA foam to make up the body. The frame inside is honestly a Jerry rigged harness made from a 2x4 and the remnance of a old tattered backpack. I didnt have a whole lot of time to make it comfortable so I settle on just making it functional, I have another con coming up soon and have plans to renovate the inside to make last devastating on my shoulders.
The shoulders I made out of papermashie using a one part water two parts wood glue mixture and bounty paper towels, I figured the absorbent nature of the paper towels would soak up the mixture better then paper and make for a rock hard exterior. The arms have a 2or base the connects at the elbow with a door hinge and the forearm is also made from EVA foam.
The hands were very tricky as I wanted them to be articulated, after watching a few dozen videos I realised there was no real inexpensive was to do it that had been uploaded so I ran to home depot and grabbed what I thought I could make work. I landed on springs, tiny hinges, string and tiny eyelets. It took a few hours but by the end I had two function hands that looked amazing.
I really wanted to work LEDs into him somehow so I put them in the center logo of the straw hat crew and hooked it up to a battery pack, then a simple LED strip behind the eyes. The head is detectable because of low doors and is just made from EVA foam and a styrofoam cone. Lastly the the back peice is simple made from EVA foam. All pieces were cut with a box knife and referenced by images I found on Google.
Tumblr media
Cosplay has really given me my dream job aspirations. After delving into cosplay my world of crafting has completely opened up and my love of prop making has flourished. I frequent Youtube videos like Evil Ted and Tested and have found that my dream job would be to make prop and costumes for Weta Workshop.
Weta Workshop has made the props and costumes for nearly every major blockbuster movie for the last two decades, movies ranging from the matrix to the lord of the rings and even all the marvel movies. If I was given a chance to work there it would be a dream come true and through cosplay i hope to one day achieve that goal.
I have truly learned to love myself through my craft. I never had many hobbies or talents growing up and that did a number on my self esteem. Now I have this wonderful hobby that let's me express my creativity and love for prop recreation and it helps me find like minded individuals that want to build each other up.
For a long time I was just going through life without a purpose or any any aspirations in life and now I have a life goal and a community full of excellent people that want to lift people up through their craft and that seems pretty life changing in my opinion

Funimation Con - Adventures in Translation with Industry Expert
11:30 AM - 12:30 AM (PDT) | Room 1 | Friday 3 July 2020
Panel Description: Ever wonder what it takes to translate anime? There’s a lot more to it than you’d think! Listen to a vivid experiential recollection of translating Japanese anime into English from one of the leading authorities in the field.
Host: Sarah Lindholm (Translator Funimation)
Usual questions: How does the process start? What does translation at Funimation look like?
First things first, it helps the translator to know the story in advance. If you can, type out the solution to the mystery or give a full summary it helps the translators get a feel for how they frame the translation. So before simulcasting an anime, our team talks to the Japanese team that worked on the anime or manga and sends the manga to the translator to start analyzing the text and get the story right before we start re-scripting an anime to English.
Things we’re looking for as we re-script/translate to English (or any other langauge):
Jokes, puns, wordplay
Cultural references (original culture)
Cultural references (referred culture) < ex. Animes set in france with french puns for the audience
Non-verbal cues)
Wordplay is the Devil’s Work:
Case Example: Black Butler
Where do we start? First, look at background and setting:
Where is it set? Set in Victorian England, 1888
Who are the main characters: Sebastian, a demon serving in the role of butler. Ciel, his young master. Claude, a rival demon butler in season 2. Alois, Claude’s young master.
Second, we look at important or recurring elements. In our case example (Black Butler) we have Sebastian’s catchphrase, “Akumade shitsuji desu kara,” which happens in nearly every episode. It features a double meaning to , ostensibly he’s saying “You see, I am but a mere butler.” But the exact same sentence pronounced or spelled slightly differently would mean “You see, I am a demon and a butler” because “akuma” means demon in Japanese.
Remember that:
Listeners may take the statement differently based on their knowledge that Sebastian’s a demon.
If you don’t know he’s a demon, you will take the line for its actual meaning of him being a “mere butler.” If you know he is a demon, you will enjoy the double meaning of the text.
Specific concepts to therefore be aware of is: demon, butler/servitude
Miscellaneous factor: smugness of the character.
Therefore: “Akumade shitsuji desu kara.”
Literal meaning: You see, I am but a mere butler.
Double meaning: “You see, I am a demon and a butler.”
How would you translate it?
Tumblr media
PUN BATTLE! Black Butler II
Claude’s (butler 2) catchphrase is “Danna-sama wo aku made musaboritai.” It is commonly addressed to Alios and it means “I want to gorge myself on you/devour you until I’m overfull.” But you can see it has the same “akumade” sound that Sebastian’s pun did, with “akuma” meaning “demon.”
What do we do about translating? We break out the scratchpad! Different potential translations include:
Tumblr media
Non-Verbal Cues:
Case Example: Kase no Stigma
Visual Mismatch:
Result of missing a cue or of translating from the script only.
Typically involves question & answer pairs
Breaks the story
When Up is Down and Right is Wrong
Context: Ren is grieving for a girl he couldn’t save. Ren’s older brother consoles him, “I think she was happy, in her way. [...] you made her into a living person.” Then he asks a question: “Sora ja fuman ka?” Ren shakes his head (the non-verbal cue).
Now “right” is wrong! How? In English culture, shaking your head means “No.” But in the context of the story and Japan’s culture, the shake of the head is not “no” but that you’ve given me some piece.
How do we mediate these right-wrongs? We like to do a watch-through to focus on the bigger picture. The questions we seek to answer are:
(Prewatch) What problems do you see coming up in the season that may need foreshadowing?
Does the video mess with the words you chose? Is there a lot of word play present in the current text?
Did you miss anything?
Is it too fast or to slow?
(We also do a general proofreading of the script!)
Tumblr media
Another note: Idioms don’t translate well so you need to rewrite some lines to give you as similar an experience as possible.
The Final Big Question: “What is Accuracy, really?”
Think of yourself as the characters and think of the experience the creator wanted. Where am I? Japan? France? Outerspace? What are the rules of those areas? How does the creator view the show (potentially)? What’s the genre?
A good tip is to watch a lot of movies and film criticism--it plays into your work a lot! Particularly in fitting the genre.
Another note: Google translation has played no effect in thus far in the profession of translating at Funimation simulcast department of translation. Google’s software still has many flaws in translating, and can’t describe the meaning of the sentence well enough to be useful. It is also particularly poor with idioms.
Terminology:
Case Example: Princess Jellyfish
Background:  THE AMA-ZU (the name of the group of geeky girls in Princess Jellyfish.) Ama with this kanji is “nun” and it is Japanese slang for a spinster (someone of marrying age but who’s never gonna to marry). It is also associated with the “b word.”
So, how do we translate this? Our answer: “The sisterhood”
Why?
Tumblr media
Finally: Some books on translation theory the host recommends: Theories of Translation (https://www.amazon.com/Theories-Translation-Anthology-Essays-Derrida/dp/0226048713/ref=pd_lpo_14_t_0/135-6117623-9673542?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=0226048713&pd_rd_r=d4b40cd7-4afa-413a-a77e-7dd625a6b90a&pd_rd_w=EIIcM&pd_rd_wg=VWV3n&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=4H7KDQDT33GNDC2YGNR6&psc=1&refRID=4H7KDQDT33GNDC2YGNR6) and The Craft of Translation (https://www.amazon.com/Translation-Chicago-Writing-Editing-Publishing/dp/0226048691)

Wellness check time friends, industry, attendees, merchants, panelists, volunteer staff, fellow convention runners/staffers. How are you doing today? How is everyone feeling mentally and emotionally? Sound off, the SaikouSquad wants to know and make sure you're all hanging in there through the Covid-19 quarantine. Sorry we've been quiet since posting the 5 month countdown graphic and reassuring everyone that SaikouCon 2020 is still happening (which is still 100% true if you were worried).
Check up out of the way, if you're down for some Attack on Titan this Saturday night, April 4, at 8 PM ET; we're going to set up a Netflix Party screening (sponsored by Funimation and Netflix) to help us all reconnect a little since it's not looking like we'll be seeing each other in person until the early summer. Taking inspiration from our friend DJ Awesomus Prime, who just did one a few days ago, I still have to figure out how to set one up, but the link to join will be posted here on FB, on Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr (anyone still on there? I forgot we have one most of the time TBH), and on the con website. Myself and the rest of the con staff hope you're all weathering the quarantine well all the way around (physically, mentally, emotionally, and of course staying virus free). Hang in there, we'll get through this and be stronger for it! - Mike

When I see this hashtag, all I see is someone proclaiming IStandWithVic[tim-blaming shitheads] This whole thing has a vibe of GamerGate 2.0; The same motivations, probably some of the same people (”Anime Avatars”, yo).  It’s just an excuse to vent hatred at women, especially courageous women who came forward to share their story of harassment, assault, etc. at the hands of this creep. The latest spasm on Twitter was aimed at the YouTube RWBY reactor community and when they largely refused to endorse #StandWith, they were vilified and harassed; at least the ones I know and love.  Of course, one of the worst offenders on their side is a RWBY reactor I used to like and respect but who must be angling for a future job as a GOP operative or a Fox News personality, I figure.  He’s certainly got the dishonest b.s. propagation down to a fine art. While any one story in isolation might be dubious, or a misunderstanding, etc.  But when you have multiple stories of a repeating, systematic pattern of behavior with a high degree of consistency between stories.....then it becomes increasingly probable many of these accounts are indeed true.  To be fair to some former “Standers”, some did review the available evidence and changed their minds.  I applaud those people, because that is a difficult thing to do.   On the other hand, I know of a person local to me who was initially supportive of us Kickers but joined the Standers because he disapproved of how certain female voice actors (who counted among his victims, btw) were expressing themselves on Twitter.  Asinine and stupid and cruel not to mention intellectually dishonest to flip one’s position for THAT.  His victims are justifiably angry and I cut them a lot of slack, even if some of their remarks are heated. One Stander wandered into my timeline to dunk on FUNimation and I blocked her immediately.  Ain’t nobody got time for that.  It’s mostly dudes but it’s disheartening to see some deplorable women defending the creep, too.  One of the good RWBY reactors pointed out it’s mostly dudes and was mobbed by deplorable women who also wanted to affirm loudly for themselves that IStandWithVic[tim-blaming shitheads] too, apparently.  Sheesh. Monica Rial is the new Anita Sarkeesian for these bottom-feeders and her timeline on Twitter inevitably attracts one or more toxic trolls now.  Monica took great personal and professional risk to come forward to share her story and I salute her bravery and lament and deplore the shit-storms she has to contend with now on social media from Vic’s cult.  I’m afraid it’s just going to get worse as November 2020 nears. I really hope things go smoothly at RTX this year but I worry about #Stand trolls being disruptive somehow.  I hope they get thrown out quickly if they try anything. I believe victims and I applaud the cons that had the courage to cancel Vic’s appearances.  I would not shed a tear if the man never works in anime voice-over again.  Don’t stand with victim-blaming shitheads.  Not now, not ever.

Medea Rambles - Vic Mignogna
Tumblr media
Fuck.
I know I’m going to regret writing this and WILL end up with backlash no matter what side I choose in the matter. So this post is the equivalency of shooting myself in the foot. No matter.
I just feel like saying something. Free speech and all that mess.
If you’re unaware of who this man is with the funny sounding last name, this man is named Vic Mignogna. For years he’s been well-known in the anime community as a very prominent voice actor. Many fans (myself included) was introduced to him when watching the English dub to Full Metal Alchemist where he plays pint-sized alchemist Edward Elric. And from then on, fell in love with his voice.
Well, I mean he was okay. Vic wasn’t really my favorite voice actor, but he was still very good. I always loved his voice in Full Metal Alchemist, Soul Eater, and Ouran High School Host Club. But others are absolute, can’t breathe without him, ride-or-die fans of Vic Mignogna and his work in anime, video games, and the Star Trek videos he does with his buddy Todd Haberkorn. In years past, he would always be seen as one of the best English voice actors of all time.
In the past ten years, I’ve seen Vic get some pretty harsh criticism from all across the board. First of all, he was seen as a homophobic. Then there were those who were SICK of hearing his voice everywhere in the anime world. Then they started attacking his Christianity. And other things like he’s mean to people around him, he’s an arrogant so-and-so, he won’t sign this thing I gave him so he’s a buttbag for life, he’s an Anti-Semite, he’s the devil, and so on and so forth. I truly felt sorry for him in some aspects. While I disagree with much of his stances on certain subjects and the homophobia thing was kind of a big driving point for me to dislike him, I wasn’t going to boycott animes that have his voice in it and call him Fuckface McFuck. But despite all that, his loyal fans would stand by his side.
But I think people started to warm up a little to him again a few years back when he attended an anime convention as a guest and got into a shouting match with some random bible-thumper. No matter what anime convention you go to, 9 times out of 10 there will always be some FuckCock holding a bible telling all of us we are going to Hell. And Vic stood up and said that is bullshit. Yeah, that was one moment where I was happy with Vic and proud that someone was ballsy enough to shutdown random Joe Jesus Jr. on the street.
I really wish I could have had the chance to meet him at a con. There was so much for him to sign for me. But alas, he never did make it to the Bay Area (excluding Sacramento, I refuse to travel all the way up there). Because after this next part, I don’t think we’ll ever be hearing from Vic again.
In January 2019, the anime community learned of several sexual harassment and assault charges filed against Vic Mignogna. Many of these claims go back to 2008 (maybe further).  More here. Yeah, the #MeToo movement has nailed a lot of sexual offenders. From Hollywood elites like Harvey Weinstein, to political figures like *too many to fucking count*, to people in the sports world like Larry Nassar. In the wake of this movement, many victims felt it was time to step out of the darkness and tell the world their story.
First of all, everyone is different. Not everyone who’s been assaulted is going to go straight to the police. Some hide this shame for years, decades, so on. When someone is sexually assaulted, a lot of things go through their minds. And the biggest thing is FEAR. Fear of what the assaulter will do if you speak up. Fear of the consequences of speaking out. Fear of what the assaulter will do next. Fear of someone else falling victim to the assaulter. Fear of losing your career. And so on. Many of us choose to stay quiet for fear of no one believing us. Many of us choose to stay quiet for fear of being labeled as a slut or being in the wrong and that we should know better.
But I feel like the wake of the #MeToo movement has encouraged victims to come forward. Especially if their assaulter is someone in a position of power and want to make sure that no one else suffers the way they did. And I’m sure Vic Mignogna’s victims felt the same way. Even though he’s a voice actor and goes to conventions. However with his popularity, it can be VERY intimidating coming out with anything of the sort.
From the looks of many of these accounts, they definitely feel ewwie due to the fact that many of them were underage. And from what I’ve seen so far is about the same level as what Al Franken did. Could there be other victims? Possibly. Could there be worse stories out there that go beyond the too-close-for-comfort kiss/hug? Possibly. And we probably will never know.
Many of Vic’s colleagues have had mixed feelings. Some have come to the defense of Vic and some have taken the side of the victims. And one even came out with her own experience with Vic. More here. As for the fans.
IT. IS. FUCKING. HELL.
I’ve seen it all in the last three weeks all over the internet. And quite frankly, it’s starting to remind me of the stupid crap that happened when R. Kelly was in trouble in the early 2000s (before what we know now). It’s either #KickVic or #IStandWithVic. If you stand with Vic, people see you as a rapist-enabling cunt and if you hate Vic, you’re seen as a lib-tard, SJW, crybaby, snowflake. I’m quite sick of seeing this getting to the magnitude it’s getting to.
The actions of Vic, again, to me they don’t seem that big. However, I’m looking at it through someone who is in her early 30′s. If I was a teenager meeting him for the first time and having him give me unwanted and unprovoked hugs and kisses, I might feel something different. Especially since this is a complete stranger. The story that was shared by Jamie Marchi however makes me think that, yeah Vic did some shady shit. But that’s just what I think.
But the fans are getting out of hand. Voice actors are being harassed for even talking about this. Victims are getting death threats. And that’s another thing I would like to go off on! Why would you do that to someone who’s clearly been through a lot? Why would you send someone who came out after years of suppressing an ugly moment in their lives a fucking death threat? What did they ever do to you personally? NOTHING. They just exposed someone who isn’t even related to you and have no connection to at all after something that felt uncomfortable to them. People like you are the reason Dr. Ford STILL TO THIS DAY can’t even go back home. So knock it off!
When other voice actors in the anime community wound up in extreme trouble, fans were not shy about dumping them like rotten potatoes. The names Scott Freeman and Illich Guardiola come to mind. Then again, both of these guys did stuff far worse than Vic, so I’ll leave it at that.
As of today (February 11th, 2019), FUNimation released a statement via Twitter stating that they have no plans to use Vic in future productions. Yeah, I’m sad on one fact. I’m sad that if any of the shows he was very prominent in, he won’t be there. Which makes me wonder what’s going to happen when Free! returns in 2020. I don’t know, maybe they can get Bryce Papenbrook to play Rin. But I digress. This was a man with a lot of talent and revered as one of the greatest voice actors of all time.
BUT THAT’S STILL NO EXCUSE! People like Vic think they can get away with anything or are invincible because of the status and power they carry. And people like that make me sick. And currently watching that in our political system and real life is just more nauseating. That’s why anime is my one outlet away from shit like this. And then Vic Mignogna reared his head in. While I am skeptical about some of the victim claims, I cannot in good conscience defend Vic.
I’m glad FUNimation isn’t shying away from this and taking the effort to cut ties from Vic. The company does have to consider the safety of the other employees that work there. I will always remember him for roles he’s done in the past (and God help the community if we ever get an Ouran sequel). And that one time fighting that one bible-thumper prick! But that’s it. I can’t support this man’s innocence. Nope. Not gonna happen.
That’s all I feel like saying.

"What the hell am I doing? I’ll tell you. I'm here, and in the moment I've lived for."
-          Joe, Megalo Box (ep. 13)
The Toonami Trending Rundown for March 23-24, 2019. Megalobox ends its run with a bang as Joe and Yuri have their highly anticipated rematch at the Megalonia finals. Meanwhile, the League of Villains begin their surprise assault at the UA’s hidden campsite, Asuna learns about the Soul Translator and the Underworld as Kirito recovers from his injuries, and Meruem wishes to spend his last moments with Komugi, among other great moments.
On Twitter, Boruto and every show from Sword Art Online to Shippuden on the schedule would successfully trend in the US. #MyHeroAcademia and #SwordArtOnlineAlicization would also trend alongside these shows, but not outright.
Several character trends were also spotted from JoJo’s, Black Clover, and Hunter x Hunter, with Josuke and Rohan (As Josuke somehow cheats his way into winning a dice game), Asta (as Ladros gets back up and proceeds to pummel everyone, forcing Asta to unlock a hidden power), and Meruem (as he spends his last moments with Komugi before both succumbing to the radiation).
On Tumblr, #Toonami would trend alongside #BNHA and #Hunter x Hunter. The full list including statistics and tweet counts from the twitter app and Amr Rahmy’s Fan Screening analytics app can be seen below.

This week's feature was an inspirational speech promo titled "Stay True To Yourself". You can check it out below.

Following the success of My Hero Academia: The Two Heroes in theaters, Studio Bones and Toho Animation have announced that a second film of the hit franchise is in the works, scheduled to premiere sometime in Winter 2020. Funimation has yet to reveal plans for a theatrical release this side of the Pacific at this time.
Netflix has announced that they will be putting up the original Evangelion series up on their streaming service on June 21. Unfortunately, it has been revealed that Netflix will be doing a completely new re-dub with a new cast as Amanda Win-Lee, the show’s original ADR Director and voice of Rei, has revealed that she and the original crew will not be invited back by Netflix to reprise their roles.
Toonami creators Jason DeMarco and Gill Austin recently talked with our friend and media partner Joshua Mathieu (@jmb70056) from Toonami Squad, including how Toonami will remain competitive in this golden age of streaming, its new partnership with Crunchyroll, and the 30th anniversary of DBZ, among other things. Check it out by clicking here.
Tumblr media
Sports anime has historically been a tough sell for the Western anime fandom. During the mid-2000’s, Toonami saw IGPX and the Prince of Tennis stumbling and Slam Dunk and Eyeshield 21 ended up pretty much DOA. While the sports genre of anime has seen a resurgence this decade thanks to the likes of Free, Yuri on Ice, and Haikyu, due to the previously mentioned shows’ focusing more on the slice of life aspects rather than the action, it perhaps came as no surprise that Toonami wasn’t really interested, and thus a sports anime joining the better cartoon show in the modern era remained elusive. That was, until Megalo Box came.
A show created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ashita no Joe, this futuristic reinvisioning of the classic manga and anime in Megalo Box was a notable hit and fan favorite among Crunchyroll viewers during the spring 2018 season with its acclaimed music, animation, and story among other things. The series would become one of the most requested anime to eventually air on Toonami, especially when Viz announced that they had licensed and were producing a dub at Anime Expo, and I think it’s safe to say the requests were heard loud and clear by Toonami and Viz. During New York Comic Con, Viz had announced that Megalo Box would make its debut on the better cartoon show on December 8, and the rest is history.
13 weeks of Joe’s quest to reach the top, and Megalo Box’s run is in the books. During the show’s run, the show successfully trended on Twitter in the US every single Saturday it had aired during its 13 week run, and included a character trend in Mikio during week 9. The show also showed up in the top 30 Amr Rahmy’s Fan Screening app during all 13 weeks.
Tumblr media
Whether we will see more of Joe’s story in the future is hard to say, but overall Megalo Box overall was an enjoyable ride and it was great to see Toonami commemorate the golden anniversary of this historic franchise. Thanks for the memories.

Due to the glitch that preempted SAO last week, and with the next acquisition apparently not ready to go just yet, SAO will premiere both Episodes 7 and 8 from 12:30 to 1:30am ET. In addition, we’ll also see the conclusion of Hunter x Hunter’s Chimera Ant arc, while Boruto begins the School Trip arc, and Naruto begins The Taming of Nine-Tails and Fateful Encounters arc, among other moments. Until then, see you again next week as always.

Leer noticia completa y comentarios » from ElOtroLado.net https://ift.tt/jAcLxfn via IFTTT

My favourite moments from Funimation Con 2020 - day two
"Todoroki could offset climate change if he was strong enough"
"I've got a whole buffet of hair to eat"
(ONS spoilers) Justin Briner finding out that Mika was coming back later despite having just died horribly and reacting like "WHAT HOW"
Brina Palencia admitting that "there have been many times I've smacked myself in the face, or hit my microphone, or knocked my headphones off, I get violent" in the booth
Her story that she got into voice acting because she asked how to audition while on a tour and a head popped up from a cubicle and said "I don't know" so they went round every cubicle until they found the right person to ask...
...and her one about watching Tokyo Ghoul to get into the role of Touka and her husband walking in, staring at the screen for a few seconds and saying "are you the one with purple hair" "yeah" "makes sense"
Clifford Chapin (Bakugo's VA) acting tough at the MHA Gameshow while his dog is asleep on the sofa behind him
The conversation suddenly veering into Animal Crossing.... Caitlin Glass "I have a 5 star island, thank you" Justin Briner "Woah, Caitlin!" C: "You can come and visit it sometime" J: "My animals have given up on me"
"Look at all this cheese you wasted, you could have just used a post-it note"
Some of the incredible guesses in the gameshow... "Heroes Rising and that other one" "Thug A" "Todoroki, Deku and Tatum" "Tokoyami on sax" "Wolverine, Superman, Ricco (Fajardo, VA of Mirio)" "Bread, soup machine, dragon lady"
"I misheard the questiooooooon.... UNACCEPTABLEEEEEE"
Attempting to play along at home but doing dreadfully because I've seen two episodes and read one manga (also I know nothing about instruments so I put guitar instead of bass and was like "they're pretty much the same right? Do I get that point?")
A summary of the Endeavour vs Nomu fight in One's Justice 2: 'Uh oh I'm stuck in a building"
"Once you got in close you just melted my face"
Watching a Q and A with Chris Wehkamp, Sonny Strait, Monica Rial and Kara Edwards (who I was especially excited to see as I know her for Sakura Nanamine but she wasn't at the TBHK panel)
"You have to do weird things to get those noises out of your face"
"I wonder if sound waves are vegetarian"
Matt Mercer telling us that the weirdest sound effect he's ever had to make was a 'slightly aroused cat hit sound'...
...And the story about giving a game's NPCs heavy Scottish accents so that this little moe cat girl at a café would say "HEY THERE WOULD YA LIKE SOME COFFEH" (no offence to Scottish people we literally live right next to each other- I just needed to write it like that to show how strong it was)
Trying to not dance too aggressively to Silhouette by Kanaboon (because I was on the couch with my parents) or cry because con was nearly over (because I was tired and emotional)
Alicia Marie in the Cosplay Showdown wearing leggings with troll faces all over them (I want some now-)
"These people are so cool and fun and sexy and I am none of these things"
"I'm busting out the toilet paper rolls, y'all are in trouble now"
The cosplay horror stories we were told... Phil "halfmooned an entire cafeteria" because his kilt got stuck in his pants, Riki's crotch seam split when she was squatting for a photo, Alicia had sharp horns on her shoulders and had to try not to stab people all day and Lauren's armour had to be safety-pinned to her because it kept falling off
Phil finishing two or three minutes early (they had an hour to make a jetpack) while everyone else was rushing "You're taking a water break? Now?" "Ah, delicious"
Proof that the internet is made for cats... Alicia sacrificed her fizzy drinks for the 4th of July for her jetpack... Lauren used some fabric rags to make flames, which was really clever... Riki did some awesome wings with LEDs in them... Phil made a Nyan Cat jetpack which he put on his cat and won (no offence to him, it was absolutely adorable and they all did amazingly)
"We've had 700 votes in" "Wow, 700 witnesses to this hot mess"
Thank you so much to everyone involved with the con, I had the time of my life and everything was incredible... and now we wait until the next con!

My Review (@peggyseditorial): OKAY--we all know I love this series, right? Because I posted about the manga of this, Kamitachi ni Hirowareta Otoko, about a month ago. I mean, it’s an isekai with virus fighting slimes! What’s not to love?
I got to watch the premier with Casea, our new contributor (@madamekrow) and she said that this isekai was the perfect example of the anime life she would live or want to exist in. I’d say same, except I’m a germaphobe... but then again, with disinfecting slimes and slimes that eat bugs, and slimes that do so many things that slime don’t normally do--I think I’d agree.
The series opening was leisurely and enjoyable! It was paced well, giving the feeling of being relaxed but not boring. I mean, it didn’t feel like 30 minutes and was easy to slip into audience immersion.
Animation wise, the premier was fantastic. Rather than static panels, we always see some sort of moving element, from wobble slimes, to slight hair movement creating the feel of a breeze passing by at certain moments. The first episode covers Chapters 1 and 2 in the manga.
The series is set to release sometime in October of 2020 and given the preview I just watched, I’m sure the series will be enjoyable! Essentially:
