Hey folks!
It has been a while! Well, we wanted to announce some big things coming your way!
WWC Askbox: Soft Re-Opening
Wednesday, Nov 1, 2023 to Thursday, Nov 30, 2023
In light of the recent attention WWC has received by the writeblr community, and the reception to our Guide to Academic Research—the mods have decided that we will temporarily reopen to your questions and test some important changes to the site! As you may have noticed, we've taken a much-needed break to catch up on our personal lives and restore our inspiration to answer the hundreds of Q&A that we receive.
Once the submission window is up on Nov 30, we will evaluate how our new system is going, tinker some more, and reopen once again once the construction dust clears.
New Rules and FAQ!
We are pleased to announce our new and improved Masterpost, which we hope will be a more centralized, more informative resource for those new and returning to WWC.
Brand-new FAQs, with new answers and content for further reading
Code of Conduct and other etiquette rules
The Ask Tutorial—a guide to writing a good ask that we’ll answer!
Moving forward, all followers are required to go through the masterpost to submit a question so they are aware of the new rules, terms & conditions.
Read the masterpost here and ask your question!
New Process
We're piloting out our own personal askbox via Google Forms. This will help us streamline the process and keep track of everyone’s questions.
We are also introducing the Deletion Log, a public, anonymous ledger that lets you know if your question (identified by a number code) has been deleted due to a rule violation, and what you can do to resubmit. Check out the Deletion Log here.
Want to submit an ask?
The below are topics of asks that we will get to right away, based on the mods who are currently active.
Black
Chinese
Colonialism
Iranian/Persian
Japanese (INCLUDING: Anime fanfic questions! Only Mod Rina will be answering anime questions, and only if she feels that the ask would make for an educational post.)
Jewish
Mixed race
South Asian: Hindu, Indian, Punjabi, Sikh (please remember that when asking about South Asia you must indicate region & time period)
Taiwanese
Writing/Publishing industry
Coming Soon: Writingwithcolor.org
We've made tremendous progress on writingwithcolor.org and are almost ready to show off the more permanent residence of WritingWithColor! However, it'll take a lot of time to fully transfer posts and links. To get the new look and all its benefits to you faster, we plan for a soft launch of the content. This will include back and forth linking between WritingWithColor.org and our home on Tumblr. We'll try to keep things seamless and your viewing experience on Tumblr shouldn't be too interrupted. Launch date is coming soon!
New Mod Applications
We still have some applications from our last call of mods and folks to respond to. So if you haven’t heard back, sorry for the delay, but no worries—we will get back to you as we start shaking the dust off our bones and getting back into Q&A. Once we are ready to invite more mods again, we'll continue our outreach.
A Special Thanks To You All
We want to thank you for your continued support, whether it’s been viewership, spreading the word about us, or sending us a tip that supports our domain and future projects for you all. The whole team really appreciates it. We will keep bringing you our best advice and guides on all things good writing with inclusivity.
Be well and keep writing!

the only way for this to have made any sense, if you will... is if Diego didn't do anything during s2 or s3. Like nothing! Like forget taking care of Stan for a minute or forgiving her. His belief in Lila, in his future fam, in their love, came with the promise when he gave her back the bracelet! Not to mention Lila, she grab his hand and walked away with him because she also believed in that promise. And I know promises can be broken! But tua spent actual years developing this ship... like the foundation and how it would work.
Diego also learned Punjabi for her and his in laws, he got a job he hated for her family... I hate to take side because that's not what this is but Lila also gave up. You want to pin this all on Diego it's whatever, but Lila was sneaking around for who knows how long... because she was sneaking around. Maybe she wasn't cheating in physical sense, but she was cheating in an emotional sense. I love Lila (one of my cat's is named after her!) but let us not pretend that she didn't also fail their marriage almost to a worse degree... she was emotionally distant.
Also, Lila and the other person being a better fit would have worked but it was developed so poorly (and the age gap in both canon and irl is so gross don't over think it) that by the time we got to the episode it was just a throw away plot.
In doing all this... he also destroyed whole Five was in the process...
So none of this makes sense, you fucking hack.

Last night was something that I'll remember forever, after years of heartbreak and tears India finally lifted an ICC trophy. It's been 11 years since we lifted an ICC trophy, 13 since we lifted a World Cup and 17 since we won a T20 World Cup and after several close brushes with victory and knockout defeats we are finally the World Champions again. There are many things that I wanted to say since yesterday but I just couldn't get the time to sit down and now when I finally have time in my hands I'd like to get all my feelings out and shut up for the greater good.
First of all Rohit, what a man, what a captain. If somebody deserved the the cup it was him and seeing him collapse to the floor and slapping the turf with all his might showed just how much it ment to him.
Also how he was crying again after a finals but this time they were tears of happiness that didn't seem to stop.
The belief Rohit (and Dravid) showed in Virat, constantly backing him and saying that it's his class that matters and he'll perform in the finals. Virat being the man he is and standing up when India needed him the most and proving Rohit right.
How Virat called Anushka and kids immediately after the win (making funny faces and shedding a few tears) showing that you're never too busy.
The tightest Rohirat hug with both of them crying and refusing to let go of each other just after the win. Matlab pura tournament we were crying for a RoKo moment and we got it at the best time possible.
Bumrah falling to his knees and showing that rare burst of emotions and then immediately running to Sanjana, hugging her so tight that he lifted her off the ground.
Hardik, the man who probably had the worst 7 to 8 months of his life with a smile on his face finally letting go and crying like a child. He turned all the boos into cheers.
Rohit consoling a crying Hardik and barging into his interview to give him a kiss on the cheek (and the way Hardik immediately melted) god how they bashed all the rumours.
Siraj not even being in the playing 11 but falling down to the ground sobbing and being speechless during the interviews.
Also streets will never forget Axar's contribution, Bapu served India again and man deserved every bit of credit.
Shivam Dube with his quickfire and crucial 21 run innings gutted all those who questioned his selection.
Arshdeep celebrating the win after being one of the best bowlers in the tournament in full Punjabi style. The tunak tunak bhangra with Virat will always be a part of numerous edits.
A teary Rohit hugging Virat again.
The Rohika hug omg how I love them.
Rahul Dravid showing more emotions than he did in the past 30 years and celebrating like a madman on his last day as the Indian coach. He truly had his Chak De moment and he bloody deserved it.
Surya taking the bloody catch of the tournament and giving us the chance to tell our future generations about the catch that helped us win the cup the same way our elder generation told us of the iconic Kapil Dev catch.
Virat giving the trophy to Dravid and the whole team lifting him as a tribute.
Rohit running into the ground with tricolour and plunging it into the ground, hoisting the flag in Barbados.
Kuldeep telling Rohit to do the Messi walk to lift the cup.
Rohit and Virat trashing all their rift rumours and posing with the trophy with the tricolour on their backs.
Rohit standing with Sammy on his shoulders, Virat by his side, trophy in his hands and the tricolour on his back.
Bumrah giving his medal to baby Angad and him giving Boom the softest smile.
Rahul Dravid being the Barbados ka Gunda
Sammy enjoying the lap of honour on his father's shoulder.
Rohit sitting down and eating some of the soil to relish the taste of victory. The whole world saw how important this was for him and how he cherished the very soil where they won instead of putting his legs on the trophy.
Virat making the day bittersweet by announcing his retirement from t20i after winning the POTM. The man who literally carried India in t20i's and t20 world cup said goodbye to the format leaving us all a little more teary.
Rohit letting Virat have his moment and instead casually announcing his retirement from t20i and making us cry even more. The man who scored 100s in t20 for fun left the stage with the trophy in his hand.
RoKo posing with the flag and the trophy being the last time they were seen together in t20s for India. Our childhood has really ended and so did an era. Extremely happy that they bid adieu with the trophy in their hands.
Jaddu following their steps and announcing his retirement from t20s also. All the seniors from the team are gone and passed the baton on, India will definitely miss it's best fielder in the t20 field.
All the Indians pouring out their love on social media not caring how big of a celebrity they are.
MS Dhoni making us realise that we need to win a world cup to make him remember his instagram password. Yer the fact that he never posted his pic with the trophy but posted India lifting the title under Rohit's captaincy at 1.30 am.
The entirety of India spilling onto the streets, screaming, crying, waving the tiranga and celebrating the win with raw emotions.
There are so many moments that I missed because yesterday was filled with raw emotions and beautiful moments so please don't hesitate to add you own. Our men in blue proved that for every 19th November there is a 29th June. I always complained (especially after 2023 wc) that how it was unfair that my grandfather got see India lifting the cup and so did my father but never me and last night all my complaints went out of the window. It was a night that I'll tell my kids about, a night that no Indian will ever forget, a night which was made even more special with the whole desiblr celebrating together. I read somewhere that "Indians have red blood running in their veins but they bleed blue" and this statement couldn't get any truer as our mental health really depended on these 11 men in blue. And finally after ages we closed our campaign with the cup in our hands and finally our legends had a deserving farewell. Bleed blue 💙

Desi LGBT Fest 2023 (hosted by @desi-lgbt-fest)
Day 7 : Faith/Rituals of Love
Definitely geared heavily towards the 'Faith' part of this prompt as soon as I read it!
If being Queer is defying conventions and if being a part of the Queer community means going against heteronormativity and gender conformity, is it not Queer to forego materialistic ties and the love of a human partner and embrace the love of a greater being you have only heard about in stories?
All four individuals featured here were integral part of the Bhakti Movement and/or Sufism in South Asia. None were married other than Meerabai.
(Panel order from top to bottom)
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486-1534) : A key name of the Bhakti Movement and the Gauriya Vaishnav tradition in 15th Century Bengal, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was believed to have been a vessel for both Radha and Krishna. Bengali doesn't use pronouns or gendered language and we may never know what they would have preferred to be identified as in a language they didn't know (English), I will simply resort to using They/Them for them. Their written teachings are few and far between but the verse mentioned here is the seventh verse of the only written record of their teachings, the Shikshastakam - a collection of 8 total verses. The translation here is my own and quite literal so that the interpretation is left to the reader.
Meerabai (1498-1597) : [CW : IMPLIED QUEERPHOBIA/APHOBIA] Meerabai was born into Rajput royalty and was married off, also to Rajput royalty, in likely an arranged marriage. While most of the stories surrounding her are folklore whose historicity is yet to be confirmed, her marital status can be confirmed, and so can her devotion and affection for Krishna and the divine, which she has herself penned in numerous poems and songs. Folklore does strongly imply that she was non-committal to her marriage and that her in-laws tried to poison her to death multiple times for it.
Kabir (1398–1448 or 1440–1518) : Found as an orphan by a Muslim weaver couple, Kabir's religion grew to become somewhat of an enigma for future generations. His stance, however, on the topic romance and marital relationships is quite clear - he looked down upon them and a huge chunk of his couplets strongly imply that romantic and sexual relations simply obstruct spiritual enlightenment.
Bulleh Shah (1680-1757) : Bulleh Shah, though an ardent proponent of loving the divine, was declared a Kafir, a non-believer/non-Muslim by a quite a few Muslim clerics of the time. He was known for speaking up against existing power hierarchies of the time and used vernacular speech for his writings (Punjabi, Sindhi) which not only served to popularize his works, but also let people connect to his words.
A personal note on my motivations under the cut.
A while back when I was actively going through the anxiety of finding out that I am ace and that I will never fit into the current South Asian society that the wedding industry has a chokehold on, I desperately wanted to see people from my own culture living happily without a partner. During one of my history rabbit hole escapedes, I restumbled upon the story of Meerabai, how she always insisted on loving and devoting herself towards Krishna, despite being married into a normative and wealthy household and despite her in-laws repeatedly attempting to poison her for not committing to her husband. Most of us from India grow up hearing about Meerabai, her spiritual connections to Krishna, and her struggles. The moral of those stories is always framed as 'believe in god, he will help you through tough times'. But this was the first time I was making a different connection, I was drawing different morals. And when I took Meerabai's non-conformity to her married life and started looking for more examples like hers, I was overwhelmed by how many more individuals existed without a partner, condemned being in a normative, married relationship, admitted to having lost human connections and faced resistance even, and yet stayed true to their orientation and sounded HAPPY! It was extremely hard to narrow it down to these four, but these do make my point! Labels are hard to transpose across cultures and history. But if being queer means being nonconforming of marital structures and being aspec/arospec implies neutrality, indifference, or aversion to romance and intercourse, then no one fits the label if they don't.

writeblr interview
thanks for the tag @illarian-rambling <3
No further ados! Let's get straight into it :)
╚══ஓ๑♡๑ஓ══╝✧༺♥༻∞╚══ஓ๑♡๑ஓ══╝
Short stories, novels, or poems?
If we're talking about writing them-- novels more often than the others, but i dabble into all of them ngl. I tried writing poetry once upon a time, and while it's not all bad, it's not all good either (i shared some of the bad ones here, buried deeply in the archives. i might share the good ones sometime who knows). and short stories i used to do all the time with my irl writer friends, where we'd give each other 3-word prompts and an hour to bust one out. 10/10 recommend lol in terms of reading, all of them :)))
What genre do you prefer reading?
high fantasy and classics. give me wuthering heights and the iliad. but also, things you'd find on a high school english class reading list. i love those types of inquisitive stories
What genre do you prefer writing?
high fantasy, political fantasies or political conspiracy fictional stories. give me the complicated lore and old history, and all the strategy and war tactics and yadayada. i LIVE FOR IT
Are you a planner or a write-as-I-go kind of person?
extreme planner. i have planned every single potential wip i have in the drafts and for the future in my notion. chapter per chapter outline. scene per scene. entire oc wiki pages. lore pages. even a dictionary for their languages and different dialects, AND the scriptures they refer to/believe in. extreme planner.
What music do you listen to while writing?
whichever playlist i'm in the mood for, but typically it's my writing, august 8, or the (un)official tov soundtrack. the genres on those are so mixed, i can't even say: oh its classical, oh its r&b. no. its just vibes. anyhow, on the discord server, you can actually see what music i listen to while i write LOL because i linked it. but yes, i'll link my spotify here too because why not?
Fave books/movies?
favourite books are the iliad, the giver, wuthering heights, the last dragon, a thousand splendid suns, and the remains of the day. i've gone on a tangent about them before here!
Any current WIPs?
i'm in the editing phases of Throne of Vengeance, which I plan on publishing very soon (👀) and the writing stages of Court of Sins!
If someone were to make a cartoon out of you, what would your standard outfit be?
Hair half up in a bun and half down. Biker shorts or men's oversized lounge shorts. oversized (men's, probably) t-shirt or hoodie, or if it's with the biker shorts, a muscle-tee or a cropped tank top. layered gold necklaces, rings on every finger, multiple gold piercings and cuffs on both ears, my classic gold chain, gold bracelet, and iron cuff on my left wrist. sneakers/running shoes/vintage mint nike tennis court shoes. i have the whole outfit DOWN lmao
Create a character description for yourself
typical brown girl who can't escape the overenthusiastic punjabi girl stereotype because of her loud and eccentric personality. has strong "youngest sibling" energy with a strong level of independence and yet an immediately willingness to let someone else take care of things. flip flops between dressing extremely well and being a fashion icon with impeccable style, to dressing like she ran out of all her clothes and can only wear knitted dishrags. has been canonically told by her father she is "the son [he] never had". she doesn't know what to do with this information. incredibly studious and a huge academic. if she didn't have the extroverted personality she did, people would be more inclined to calling her a nerd. instead, they call her intelligent and call it a day. slightly a teacher's pet. can convince anyone and everyone around her to do her a favour because she's mysteriously persuasive. doesn't know how to do romantic love, but is 1000% invested in showering people in platonic love. has 10k different hobbies, none of which are remotely related. every week, she finds a new topic to obsessively research about and ramble to her voice memos to. as her sisters and friends like to say, "her life is like a series of side quests" i think that about does it., lest i wished to keep rambling LOL
Do you like incorporating people you actually know into your writing?
yes and no. i like taking a singular piece of lore from people i know, typically with their permission. so, some of the ocs in my books are named after people i know in real life whom i asked if i could name my character after. it doesn't really go beyond oc naming, tbh. i feel like stealing people's real life lore is kinda... invasive? idk.
Are you kill-happy with characters?
1000% and my best friend hates me for it. i feel like a toxic partner, only capable of showing my ocs affection by making them suffer
Coffee or tea while writing?
both, plus other substances. cold water. diet soda. hot water. milk. hot cocoa. literally everything.
Slow or fast writer?
fast, but it depends on a) if i'm in school or not (pre-med babyyyyy); b) if i have a deadline of not (i once finished a full draft in 3 months because i put the finish date on my document and felt the need to meet that deadline)
Where/who/what do you find inspiration from?
my childhood and my childhood stories. disclaimer: i DID have a happy childhood, before anyone makes any wild assumptions LOL
If you were put into a fantasy world, what would you be?
a bookkeeper, a scholar, or a soldier. or an adventurer. not just because they're cool, but because that's what i currently do irl, so why not in a fantasy setting too?
Most fave book cliche?
friends to lovers trope for romances. jealousy arcs. misunderstandings that are DONE RIGHT. angst. ANGST. found family. the old mentor. things like that, i eat it right up like we're in an all-inclusive buffet
Least fave book cliche?
toxic male leads who everyone forgives because they're hot. i honestly can't think of much. if it's executed right, everything is fun and freegame
Fave scenes to write?
i genuinely have no clue. i love writing in general. maybe the dialogue fluff scenes that never make it to the final draft because they're so absolutely filler but they butter my croissant in ways only a boulangerie would be able to serve?
Most productive time of day for writing?
night time with the cityscape if i'm in my uni town! daytime in my mancave if i'm in my hometown!
Reason for writing?
i've always been a storyteller, and i can't exist with this world in my mind without opening the gates for everyone to pay a visit. i enjoy sharing what i love. they say the universe is expanding, and that is an undeniable fact, for all the proof i need is in the way the worlds in my head keep growing.
╚══ஓ๑♡๑ஓ══╝✧༺♥༻∞╚══ஓ๑♡๑ஓ══╝
thanks again for the tag, my love <3
i'll tag @writingismydrugs @drchenquill @wyked-ao3 @willtheweaver @satohqbanana and @pexchys

Would it be problematic for me to have a black girl convert to sikhi over the course of the story with the assistance of her Sikh friend & the friend’s family and then get married to said friend in the future? I don’t want it to seem like she did it simply to be with her friend so I thought that maybe if I showed how she enjoys hearing things about the religion (for example how sikhi emphasizes treating everyone equally and also the protection of those facing injustice) from her friend that it could seem more natural but could that be seen as fetishizing? The black girl has been friends with the family for 10+ years (aka since she was 8) and also wasn’t raised following any religion (but not as an atheist either) so I feel the conversion would be somewhat easy for her but if any of what I’ve wrote is problematic I’ll change it! I’m still doing research so if I messed anything up I’m extremely sorry. Thank you in advance!
Black woman converts to become Sikh - Is this problematic?
If SK thinks these circumstances are okay from the Sikhism standpoint, then absolutely it is fine. Black people are all individual and different people throughout the diaspora. We are not some collective monolith with a build-in set of interests, beliefs and rules on what we can and cannot do! The real question to me is if someone can convert to Sikhism and if so, how being Black factors into the lifestyle.
On that note, I will hand the mic to SK and also welcome Black Sikh followers to chime in.
-Colette
Sikhi accept converts
Short answer: No, it is not problematic. Sikhi accepts converts. There’s nothing wrong with being drawn to a faith because of certain aspects and then looking deeper and choosing to convert.
Longer answer: Conversion into a completely new faith is rarely easy. I would say Sikhi is a harder faith to convert to because there are few resources in other languages and many Sikhs are unaccustomed to converts. As in most, if not all, religions, there is a gap between what is said and how it’s practiced.
Despite the messages about fighting injustice and treating others equally, many Sikh converts, especially Black Sikhs, deal with prejudice. This is not even unique to converts - Afghan & Kashmiri Sikhs have also faced ignorant comments from Punjabi Sikhs who aren’t aware of Sikh communities outside Punjab. The 1980’s-1990’s Sikh genocide disconnected many Sikhs in Punjab from the revolutionary messages of justice and equality laid out in Sikh holy texts.
A challenge unique to Black Sikhs is that the way kesdhari Sikhs take care of their hair and tie it in turbans can be a challenge for someone with Black hair. I would recommend Gurpreet Kaur’s writing.

I would also suggest checking out The Black Sikh Collective on Tumblr, Instagram & Facebook for more perspectives of Black Sikhs.

I’ve been reading these anons… and I feel so seen. I am objectively Punjabi. My parents are ethnically Punjabi, I’ve been to banquet halls and celebrate rakhli and stuff. But my paleness and racial ambiguity and (current) poor ability to speak Punjabi makes me feel like a fraud. And growing up, I genuinely liked England too, in the most innocent way possible. My mom’s side of the family lives there. I’ve visited twice.
I had no knowledge of the British empire’s effect on India for a long time. And it hurts so much to understand what happened. And I know it’s horrific; the theft of the Koh-I-Noor is just one atrocity. I understand what happened to the komagata maru when it reached Canada. But I still really like both places. And I don’t think I could ever untangle my opinions of both countries.
