can we talk about the katniss/lucy gray parallels (or lack thereof) for a sec?
they're superficially the same, because of the things we talk about all the time: they're both female victors from 12. there are things that come with that culture and background -- the mockingjay, the plants, the songs. those similarities aren't so much between them as people, as individuals -- they're born of coming from the same culture. the most significant thing they share is their resilience; their spirit of resistance and rebellion. their defiance.
but really, all those things they share, only serve to demonstrate just how different they are as individuals (because personality is different from upbringing or values).
we parallel their sarcastic bows, but they're so so different. lucy gray is a performer mockingly curtseying and saying "kiss my ass", where katniss is a hunter who doesn't have time for this society bullcrap.
they both sing the hanging tree, but as i've ranted about, their renditions show how different they are: lucy gray, again, a performer with a spirit unbroken, loud and charming and sassing right to the capitol's face, daring them to defy her, daring them to look away. katniss, again, a hunter, quiet but unyielding, sparking rebellion under the capitol's nose.
they both won their games, but in such different ways. lucy gray charmed the snakes (both literal and in the form of one coriolanus snow), while katniss threw down with weaponry.
lucy gray said look at me, care about me. katniss said fight for me, fight with me.
and so what we see is that they are not at all the same person, but that's what's so important. because it's not just one person or one type of person that puts their foot down and rebels. we don't need a specific kind of Chosen One to light the spark -- anyone can.
#seriously. why am i so invested.#I DON'T EVEN GO HERE#the hunger games#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#lucy gray baird#katniss everdeen#thg meta#anyways i do believe somewhere in the multiverse there's a timeline where lucy gray /does/ spark the rebellion#(in a deeper and more immediate way)#like. look at the way the capitol had to erase her. (and not just because snow was a salty scorned ex.)#there's a universe where she's too popular for the records to really be erased. where she becomes a celebrity and#gains a platform and a network and /access/. where she flexes those snake-charming skills on the capitol.#there's a universe where she sways coryo a little more thoroughly. where she's ripped from him by the capitol#and it radicalizes him. doesn't make him a good person or less of a ruthless player in the game. but one with different goals.#there's a universe where she doesn't have coryo there to cheat for her. in that one she can't hold the snakes off forever.#she dies in the arena. there is no victor and no hope. there is nothing but love for a girl who should've survived.#in this universe the people revolt because the capitol has grown to love her and the districts see nothing to lose.#there's a universe where she survives and gains the respect of all the academy students. children are the future.#this is how the capitol loses control.#there's a universe where lucy gray sticks around in 12 past the music ban. in this universe she'll write quiet songs of rebellion.#she'll run. not out of panem but within it. she will be a singing ghost starting fires throughout a country fractured.#ANYWAYS. I WILL STOP.

the way i think about learning and education changed sm compared to when I was younger
#like i cared so little about school when i was younger (altough maybe now i might do a little too much)#but not just that... i thought i'm just not that person who can do well at school#i can't memorise stuff well enough and i'm probably stupid anyway but who cares about that stuff and school#and i won't need it for life anyway other skills are important in the real world anyway that's all useless#i guess i also had that idea that one day i will just come up with some grand idea or business type thing to make money#i mean that's also that kind of stuff u see all over the internet and i def saw too much of that#and sure that's possible but how often and even then is it even so great having that type of job where ur never off#and like other jobs which are achieved though education have a lot of beauty too and there are many great routes which require education#at first i didn't even want to go to uni because i was so sick of school and i believed i wouldn't belong there anyway bc of those reasons#and because i thought i was too stupid in that way to make it#i also had this weird view of looking at some smart people as know it alls or being pretentious and i didn't wanna be all that??#still don't know why i thought that?? it honestly sounds sooo stupid and i also thought i wouldn't fit in with uni students anyway...#like i'm so different... couldn't have been more wrong#i never felt more belonging than at uni like this is where i'm supposed to be - the great people i met there and friends i made#and my awesome professors#i actually admire some of them so much 🥺#like i wanna be like them - whatever path i will end up in jobwise#might become a teacher too or even a professor (dare i dream lol) or sth with media could also be a great option 🤭#but what i mean why i admire them sm they're so intelligent but also many of them such great people#like empathetic helpful and idk i just love smart people#they're so well spoken and i highly value people who really know their stuff well by now and they certainly do#but not only that also having such great general knowledge u can have such interesting conversation with such people#and many professors actually have opened my eyes to many issues of our our world and made me rethink and change some of my views#or just things i wasn't even aware of bc we all live in our little bubble at time at least i certainly did#only obsessing over my little life and sometimes turning the head away from cruelities elsewhere#and i feel being an intelligent person is actually so cool now and i wanna know important stuff on many topics but especially...#about what i then can use for my future job or whatever i do in life and nothing i learn feels pointless now or almost nth#but even then useless stuff in school it wasn't all for nothing if u had approached it the right way#just learning by itself can teach you important skills and knowledge like how to learn - how to memorise stuff the best way...#or finding out what ur capable of and growing ur self esteem it's all valuable in some way

Didn't add a generative AI statement to my syllabus because I thought "none of my assignments play to those tools' strengths, using AI wouldn't work and would be really obvious" but lo and behold the students are using it anyway. It's not working and it's really obvious.
#writing feedback to a student like hey. you submitted a list of citations published in the future. how did that happen#like guys. you are PAYING for this class. all I want is to help you practice the skills#I would not even assign grades if I didn't have to#posting an announcement going I'm not going to punish you for these tools bc I didn't forbid it#but I WILL take points off if you keep submitting sources that don't exist#at least check your work

it's impossible to have a cogent theory of academic dishonesty (even on a small scale, let alone a chatgpt scale) without the signaling theory of education
#if we take even a small part of the chatgpt panic seriously#then it's obvious that students are operating as if their degree is primarily about signaling their worth to a future employer#rather than as an opportunity to learn concrete and specific skills#see also: this panic is primarily about essay writing#and essays have been a vastly over-used assessment tool#if your assessment is broken....get a new assessment#I did enjoy how in that article the shamelessly-cheating student they interviewed#was extremely clear and open about how he believed the value of college was SOLELY social sorting theory#lol#gotta appreciate that level of self-awareness#anyway this has been JR's obnoxious opinions about the economics of education#posts#education#economics

I'm not afraid to admit I cried a little bit when I was laying on the sidewalk temporarily stunned. and I kept crying while speed walking to the bus stop a few blocks away. that shit hurt so bad, on top of an already miserable morning.
#woke up on time. got dressed + ate and was ready to go with a solid half hour until I had to leave#so I decided to set an alarm for 20 minutes and be warm and cozy in bed instead of risking flashbacks by sitting on the couch#however sleep me (asshole. I suspect its the same part that has caused issues like this before) turned off the alarm when it rang#and fell asleep again#I woke up with barely enough time to make it to the bus stop#and then I fucking fell! everything hurts!#I was late for class and couldn't log in because my instructor shares her screen which can't be moved from the login screen.#which was completely covered#and she straight up said that I could “just watch” and to suck it up (the latter was said differently but that was the gist)#just watching a practical skill demo is useless! I couldn't even take notes because those are all in a document I needed to log in to access#so. yeah. its sucked today. it's sucked so badly#one of my friends felt so bad for me that she bought me lunch because she wanted to do something nice for me ;-;#it was. by the way. incredible. the cafeteria + kitchen staff make some really tasty shit#today it was. a rose sauce over risotto + arugula + roast beef#easily the fanciest thing I've eaten in recent memory. the portioning was generous as well and it was just. holy shit#I forget that I do actually enjoy “real food” when it's not prepared by my mother with an undiagnosed ED who kind of forced her ED onto us#the longer I am free of her the more willing to try “healthy” food I am becoming. healthy food doesn't inherently taste bad.#it's a lesson that's taking time but I'm getting braver#anyways. that was a highlight for the day. it's not even 1 PM yet.#I also got praise from an instructor for answering a theory question in a way she hadn't heard from a student before and was impressed with#so that was also nice.#I'm home now and I'm gonna try to loosen the muscles around my left tm joint so it'll eventually go back in#if my jaw is still out like this tomorrow.. I'll have to get medical attention. this happening after so many years of my jaw behaving#bodes ill for the frequency of future subluxations#🥴🔫

Top 5 High-Paying Skills You Need in 2025 without a Degree! 💸
Let's be real. The job market of 2025 isn't what it was even five years ago. AI tools are now writing articles, designing graphics, coding basic websites, and even analyzing complex data. Roles that involve repetitive tasks or information processing are increasingly being automated. This isn't a sci-fi movie plot; it's the reality unfolding right now.
Many are worried, "Will AI take my job?" And that's a valid concern if you’re clinging to outdated skills. Think of it like this: once upon a time, being a switchboard operator was a solid job. Then technology evolved. The same is happening now, but at lightning speed. If your skills are the equivalent of a rotary phone in a smartphone world, then yes, you need to be concerned.
But here’s the flip side: AI is also creating new demands, new roles, and new avenues for those who are willing to learn and pivot. It’s not about humans vs. AI; it’s about humans with AI vs. humans without. The key is to become indispensable by acquiring skills that leverage AI, manage AI, or cater to human needs that AI can't (yet) fully replicate, like deep strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and complex creative problem-solving. The future belongs to those who can dance with the machines, not those who try to outrun them in a race they can't win.

University should be compulsory for all
Education is one of the important weapons in the overall development of a child. All students must be educated to know the basic etiquette of right and wrong. With high-quality education, children are informed about their rights and duties to utilize them when required. It basically helps students in serving the purpose that can build their future.
To achieve career goals, students should know their perspectives and interests. Many educators help children choose the right streams according to their interests in school. With the helpful suggestions of teachers, they can easily select a stream of their interest. Moreover, it depends on whether students want to attend university based on their interests and stream after completing their school education.
Everybody has their own choices. Some want to go to university, whereas others never wish to go to university. Making University Education compulsory or not becomes a big part of the debate. If colleges become compulsory, many students will be forced to go to a university without the desire to pursue their education. Besides, many high school students who desire to go to university would be happy if university education became compulsory.
Making it compulsory means it's a must that might burden students. Learners who are not interested in going to university will not be able to show their potential and skills at a higher level. In this blog post, we will discuss whether university education should be compulsory or whether children should feel free from that.
Cons and Pros of University Education
As everything has positive and negative impacts, university education has some cons and pros. Let's overview whether a college degree is worth it or not.
Pros:
Higher Education is something every individual strives for at least at one stage in his/her life. Everyone dreams of going to college and getting a high-paying job. Those interested in attending college are fond of college culture, libraries, environment, etc. University Education helps people in multiple ways, from raising their living standards to achieving their goals. Some of the Pros of making university Education compulsory are as follows:
1. Better Education
University is a tool for students to use to further their education. They can learn more about what they love and what they don't. University means more access to class learning, enhancing information for their brain to soak up.
2. More Job Opportunities
Several jobs require a minimum qualification of a college degree. Employers usually don't get a good response with their resumes unless they have a college education. Additionally, students with a diploma qualification get more opportunities for high-paying and interesting jobs.
To get new job opportunities, study24hr.com provides you with ample options. It is a great online education portal that allows you to show your skills and talent. Study24hr.com bestows various job opportunities such as educator, instructor, content writer, etc. The platform helps students enhance their learning capabilities with a systemic and effective virtual environment. Moreover, it offers an ever-growing range of informative and high-quality online courses.
3. New Experiences
There are countless people and places that you meet and explore. As an adult at a university campus, you have full freedom. You can meet different people from different religions, cultures, and faiths. Also, you can check out new coffee shops or wander around your campus. Trying new things and meeting new individuals gives you exposure to new experiences.
4. Chance to get yourself out of your comfort zone
When you go to university, you are expected to be self-independent. You don't need your parents or guardians to hold your hand and drop you at the college gate. Instead, you can do your things on your own. While doing everything independently, you'll sometimes become stressed, but you'll find that you can do much more than you expected.

Cons:
Most people think spending on a college degree is just a waste of time as it has few negative effects, such as student debts, stress, missing family, friends, etc. They say many successful people never completed their graduation, and many jobs don't require college degrees. Let's check out why people think a university education is useless.
1. Stress and Anxiety
Schools are stressful, but universities are even more stressful. It's up to you to get to the session to figure out how to graduate. Even though you have counselors as resources, things will still stress you out and make you anxious.
2. Student loans
As college fee structure is increasing rapidly, student loans are also rising fast. Families with poor financial conditions can't afford to send their children to universities. And that's why parents take loans from financial institutions. But once children have graduated, they become worried about clearing their debts.
3. Rich people without a university Education
Famous Businessmen like Steve Jobs, Ellen DeGeneres, and Bill Gates have one thing in common- a lack of college degrees. Besides, many reputed entrepreneurs and celebrities started a semester but eventually dropped out between graduation.
4. Jobs don't require graduation
Successful careers such as opticians, dental hygienists, and veterinary dieticians don't require their employees to have a college education. These jobs pay well and offer steady income and a way to have a comfortable life.
The Last Word
University Education should be provided to those passionate and interested in getting a college degree. High profession-seeking students would be unhappy if it became mandatory for all. There are several options besides universities for getting an education in good-paying jobs.
The learners who are more interested in some professional courses would not be able to focus on their career-objective goals. As a result, a major part of the resources would be wasted.
In the end, it is concluded that college Education depends on students' ambition. If they want to be a successful car salesman, a college degree won't be compulsory for them. But if any child wants to become a scientist, a degree in pure science is essential. Hence, a college degree should be optional so students can give their best and make their future bright.

when teachers complain about students being passed on to the next grade when they’re obviously behind on grade level by two+ years/grades, why do parents automatically point their fingers at their teachers lmao?? yes students missed up to 1.5-2 years in face-to-face learning due to the pandemic and the remote learning policies depending on their location so now that they’re back for in-person learning like we’re just doing our job and teaching them to the best of our abilities, but due to the curriculum and the policies in place (depending on where you live obvs), we have no choice but to pass them on. teachers make attempts to bring attention to a student’s attendance and grades to their parents but if the parents can’t follow up on the emails we send, the phone calls we make, the voicemails we leave and the parent-teacher conferences requests we send, then that sends a clear message that you don’t care about your kids education beyond the bare fucking minimum.
we get it, parents are busy and have jobs and other priorities and every parent and student has a different story. but if your kid is 12 y/o and is in the 7th grade and is reading/writing at a 4th grade level, is incapable of reading a 200 page novel and goes straight to tiktok or to their ps5 immediately after school, then we are not the problem!!!
#now i understand why my k-8 school said we should read at least 30 minutes a day.#they have no comprehension skills. no decoding skills. no vocabulary skills.#when i was a sub last year and i assigned this 5th grade class (regular and not advanced) to write a paragraph about an important woman in-#their life for womens history month and they literally did not know what a paragraph was.#you can go to any school rn and ask any kid if they like to read and 9 times out of 10 they will say no#and if any of you idiots say reading isn’t important these KIDS are our FUTURE. future doctors nurses police etc etc#not all them of are going to be influencers so yes they need to learn how to critically analyze text and write about it#my mom had a p/t conference a few months ago for her 7th grd student bc he was underperforming and she asked the parent if he had a bedtime#bc the student was always sleeping in class and the parent said no and that he goes straight to playing video games after school#like i hate to break it to some of you but education is a 50-50 process that has to be met halfway at HOME#respectability politics and caring abt trivial shit like lgbt ‘propaganda’ in schools will be the death of education#bc the processes and the curriculum doesn’t allow for lengthy remediation we have to move on to the next topic and yes pass all the student#education#important

Emergency: Help Evacuate My Family From GAZA WAR
Dear Humanity,
I'm Haya from Gaza , from a family of 8 people: my parents, two sons, and four daughters (two of them suffer from allergies).
I've witnessed the evidence of the tragedy that has struck our lives in Gaza, where my family and I have survived amidst numerous previous wars. But today, we face the most dangerous and fierce battle in the current war. The urgent need intensifies for us, as we have nothing left and are unable to secure our basic needs such as food, water, and safe shelter.
Here is our story - On October 7th, our lives changed forever, my family and I evacuated from northern Gaza to southern Gaza, hoping to return soon, but it wasn't meant to be. Our home was surrounded, burned, and then completely destroyed, Our home, once a fortress of hope, now lay in ruins, a stark reminder of our shattered dreams.
The night before we left from the north to the south was terrifying. Shelling sounds were everywhere, making a loud noise that felt like it went through our souls. Every explosions shook the ground like earthquakes, sending shockwaves of fear through our trembling bodies. filling us with fear. The air smelled of destruction and blood, making it hard to breathe. When dawn came, we saw the devastation around us, realizing our home was now a symbol of loss and despair.
We ran into the streets and with each step we took into the unknown streets, we felt as if we were plunging deeper into the abyss of our shattered existence, leaving behind everything we own in our home: Clothes, important official documents, the car, and literally it's almost everything - the enormity of our loss weighed heavily upon us.
Our home it was where we found hope, safety, and made precious memories. Losing it felt like losing years of our lives, leaving us adrift amidst the wreckage of our shattered existence.

A brief video depicting the devastation that struck our home and our entire neighborhood in Gaza.
Desperate Plea: Escaping Gaza's Allergy Nightmare
I, Haya, suffer from severe allergy to penicillin-derived medications, and my sister, Amal, also suffers from severe allergies to medications from my family such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen.
These allergies create a deep sense of fear and anxiety for us, as we live in a constant state of tension and fear of anything that may require a visit to the hospital. We fear being given inappropriate medications due to the unavailability of suitable treatments in Gaza because of war or lack of awareness and not informing the doctor of our allergies, which could lead to serious consequences threatening our lives.
MY Father Income

Our dreams are heading towards oblivion in the labyrinth of an uncertain future
My story, along with my siblings, represents a united team of four individuals, three of whom are skilled programmers and one graphic designer. We work as freelancers in the world of freelancing.
As for my younger sister, she is a student studying at the College of Architecture. She has always carried a big dream in her heart, a dream of being part of changing Gaza, of making it more beautiful and better. She looked forward to the day when she would receive her degree and start building this dream. But the beginning of the war changed everything. The destruction of infrastructure and universities cast shadows of despair over her dreams.

When I think of my brother in Belgium, I can't help but feel deep sadness. He has been suffering from unbearable anxiety and insomnia since the outbreak of the war. Sleep eludes him at night, and his physical and mental health collapses under the weight of these heavy burdens, negatively affecting his performance at work. Problems and challenges pile up in front of him without the slightest opportunity for rest.
We all feel psychological pressure and extreme anxiety. The war hasn't been limited to external attacks but has deeply infiltrated our daily lives. We search among the rubble for a little safety and the basic resources for survival. Every day comes with a new challenge that we must overcome.
As we sway amidst the rubble of shattered dreams, our souls wrestle and our hearts beat strongly challenging the ravages of war.
Our parents earnestly seek a way to rescue us from this hell, feeling the heavy responsibility for every moment we spend under the shadows of fear and destruction. They dream of a safe place where they can build for us a better future, filled with security and hope, for we deserve life in all its meanings of comfort and peace.
Perhaps this fundraising campaign represents a light in the midst of darkness, it is indeed the only hope we cling to firmly.
I appeal to the world as a whole to hear my cry and the mournful cry of my family in Gaza. We need the helping hand that reaches out to wipe our tears and build a bridge to safety.
Your donation is not just a donation; it's an opportunity to rebuild life and brighten a better tomorrow. Be part of our hopeful story, for we need your hand to start anew.
The purpose of the fundraising campaign
The goal of this fundraising campaign is to rescue my family - my parents, my siblings, and me - through the Rafah Crossing to Egypt, which currently requires $5000 per person. This campaign is our only chance to stay alive, and I humbly request your assistance at this critical time. I will provide you with a comprehensive breakdown of the expenses, committing to transparency and clarity.
