It has been one hell of a year full of highs and lows but one thing that hasn’t changed and that’s the pursuit of my goals. This final year of my doctorate has given me challenges that I could not prepare for. I’ve attended one too many funerals as well as the mental health challenges that come with taking losses. Losses are nothing but learning experiences to apply to life and keep moving forward!!! It takes a lot of reflection and work to get to a place of peace but you have to keep moving forward. I took a break from my research and writing my dissertation because I needed to get back to the right mental space. Now I am in such a great space mentally, and I have been hitting the gym faithfully to get my physical health in order. I’m excited about my research and looking forward to finishing up and officially becoming a Doctor. My research involves the intersection of education, entrepreneurship, and hip hop culture. There’s tremendous power in the 3 but very limited studies and programs intertwine them. I feel my research will impact the community because culture should be involved especially with the inner city youth and schools don’t represent our culture properly!!! I will finish and graduate this year and wish my mother could’ve been there with me but she will be there in spirit and I have dedicated my work in her memory. She always told me I had the mind to accomplish anything so that’s what I will continue to do!!! My Exam-Notes Binder

When I had my first hard class in college for my neuro major, I had no idea where to start with getting organized enough to do well. Over the past two years I have tried several study methods, but with so much material for my Neural Mechanisms of Disease class and my Nutrients, Enzymes and Metabolic Flux Biochem class, I had to come up with something new.

I used to take written notes, scan them into Evernote and annotate them (like in the video), then convert the content into Anki flashcards that I could study. I will do a post on this study method in the future.

For now, I will focus on my current strategy. I purchased an Apple iPad and pencil for less than $400 at the Apple store (I got the cheapest model and used my student discount).

In class, I upload my powerpoint slides to the Good Notes App (https://www.goodnotes.com/) and then when the professors are talking really fast in class, I take hand-written notes on top of the slides. I love how I can erase, highlight, and move around text in the app. After each class, I print out the notes full-size and put them double sided into my binder. 

When making my study guide 1-2 weeks before the exam (also in the GoodNotes app- this process will be in another post), I go through all the notes and highlights and focus on putting in the study guide:

1. things I wrote in class- usually things the instructor added (the professor definitely wants me to know these things)

2. definitions that I need to memorize

3. anything that I find challenging/ don’t know on the first pass

Overall, I found that this exam-binder method works great for “capturing” all the information in an easy way so that I know I have everything right in front of me when I go to study. Also, this is a visual reminder of how much material I need to study for the exam so I’m motivated to study. (This 4″ binder is full and it just contains the material for Exam 2 for both my hard classes). After each exam, I remove all the slides and put them in a “reference” binder so I have room for the material for the next exam in my Exam Notes Binder.

This is a great strategy for filing everything in a central location so exam prep is easy and convenient! I hope you find this as helpful as I did for your hard classes.

This past weekend I was able to go visit Barbados & Ross University School of Medicine! I got to meet some of my classmates, explore the island, see where we’re living & visit the campus! I knew I was excited to start back when I first got accepted, but now that I saw everything—IT BECAME SO REAL! Monday was also the first day of the pre-matriculation course! We had a mini assignment/module on understanding the benefits of scheduling your day, utilizing new study techniques, and taking advantage of the resources that the school has to offer. I also got to see some friends who are a couple semesters ahead of me who were able to give me really good study advice!!
