I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but It's really funny how Horikoshi writes characters that seemingly only exist to be cheerleaders/mouthpieces to his favored ones. What's even funnier is how divisive these favored characters are.
Izuku - He's the main character and he does have a personality, but he's never allowed to grow beyond his "Kacchan is the best" mentality, despite it literally being painful for Bakugou to actually call him by his name instead of 'useless'.
Present Mic - Pretty much only exists to show that Aizawa supposedly isn't a bad person, despite Aizawa canonically not treating him that good.
Aizawa - Exists to show that "Bakugou's totally a good guy!" despite him having expelled students for much less. It's REALLY not a good look for Aizawa as a person that he wants BAKUGOU to be the No. 1 Hero.
Hawks - Is ride or die for Endeavor, despite him being a domestic abuser and an all-around douche.
Rei and Fuyumi - Minimize the negativity Endeavor has brought into the family's lives and violate the boundaries and feelings set in place by those not favorable to Endeavor (though this last one is soley on Fuyumi)
The frustrating thing about these characters is that there are the building blocks for more nuanced characters there.
Izuku could gradually come to the realization that the way Bakugou treats him was never okay and leave him behind for the sake of his own healing.
It's all but stated Hawks latched onto Endeavor as a replacement for his own abusive father - have him see and fully realize that Endeavor was no different from his dad.
Hori brushes over the parentification Fuyumi underwent as a result of Rei's hospitalization and Endeavor's neglect - just fucking give her SOMEONE to take care of her, as well as someone calling her out on pushing her feelings onto her younger brothers.
I don't really know with Rei, but I guess just have multiple people reminding her that not only was the abuse she suffered never okay, but Endeavor leaving her favorite flower is the bare minimum of apologizing.

Call this a nitpick (and it very may well be), but the MHA wiki states that not only did Fuyumi become a teacher because she felt guilty about Shoto's abuse, but that there are moments where she also fears/resents Endeavor.
WHY ARE WE NOT SEEING THIS IN CANON?!
All we see is Fuyumi trying to be peacemaker, her disrespecting Shoto's boundaries by giving Endeavor his contact information, and her putting some of the blame of Touya becoming Dabi on herself.
No. No. No. No. Stop that this instant, Fuyumi. You were a KID. What in the actual FUCK were you, Natsuo, and Shoto supposed to do about that?
Hi @nutzgunray-lvt 👋,
I think Hori fumbled with this, there should be more moments where her resentment is obvious but we rarely see inside her head and Hori doesn't show that when he is.
The becoming a teacher part of Fuyumi, to me read more like her trying to reclaim her lost childhood and be a positive influence on other kids rather than because she felt misplaced guilt about Shoto's abuse (although she definitely did.)
But I do think actually Hori does show the fear stuff well;
Giving out Shoto's contact information despite how Shoto would feel about it. - This is what many fans are rightfully annoyed at her for. Although, I see this as an act of fear on Fuyumi's end, she was afraid of defying her dad when he asked her for that information and the possible rage/shouting/etc.. that could come from that defiance. (This is where Hori could have benefited from putting in a scene of Fuyumi apologising to Shoto for that and explaining that she felt too scared to defy even an 'redeemed' Endeav. Fear of an abuser doesn't just go away because they decided they are good now - Hori.)
Putting some of the blame on herself for Touya. - That reads as (not only misplaced guilt) but also softening the blow for Endeavor because she is fearful of him and how he could blow up / revert if she said "Yeah actually it is all you."
Side note 1 - there is also Rei to think of in regard to that second point. Fuyumi clearly is influenced by her mum and takes after her more than her father so Rei saying that "it is not just on you, it is on all of us," to Endeavour regarding Touya could have influenced Fuyumi's thinking too despite how warped that is.
Side note 2 - when seeing the extreme fallout of abusive behaviour committed by an abuser, victims often think "what could I have done to prevent this?" or "I should have done this differently," Especially when they are caught up in the aftermath like the Todoroki's (bar Endeav) are here. This is an understandable but misplaced thinking here. Neither she nor her brothers or mother could have prevented this outcome.
Endeavor could have.
Endeavor is at fault.
He chose to do this. He made Dabi and no one else is at fault (especially not the Todosibs who were also children in an abusive environment.)

Ah fuck it Changes I would make to mha if god came down, pt 2
Fuyumi Todoroki should have been a hero and the more I think about this the more I will die on this hill. A) there's a severe lack of important female heroes and while Fuyumi is a side character I would have her take Endeavwhore's place in almost ALL of the times they fight Touya, both to give her more presence and because Touya being 'taken down' in any capacity by his abuser kind of sickens me. B) I want Enji a lot less present in the Todoroki plot than he currently is, even if he still gets some kind of a redemption. Fuyumi being a hero could both take his role physically and ALSO would give Shouto an actual reason for wanting to be a hero. C) I've always wondered like... why exactly Shouto would continue wanting to be a hero as he distanced himself from his father. His admiration for All Might doesn't seem like a good enough reason if his entire life has just been so isolated to only a few people and the major presence in his life his is abusive father who he's only ever seen misuse the power he has as a hero for his own gain. Fuyumi being a hero would actually give Shouto another hero role model to look up to, another reason to only use his ice, and give him a CONTINUED reason to want to be a hero. D) Also, Fuyumi's supposed to represent the 'fawn' response to abuse, and so her actively trying to do exactly what her dad wants and make a hero of herself and STILL be overlooked and discarded by him could really hammer in how Endeavwhore doesn't actually give a shit about any of his kids, even if they do what he wants; unless they're strong enough to beat All Might *with fire* like he wants he doesn't care.
I'm changing the entire entrance exam. It emphasizes entirely the wrong thing - killing things - above what heroes are actually supposed to focus on: saving people. If your hero school and society puts such an emphasis on 'taking down the bad guy' as opposed to saving people as heroes are supposed to do, that should actually be a point of discussion. That said, even if hero society still emphasizes defeating villains and looking cool for the camera above saving civilians, I'm changing it anyway:
Paper portion is the same as we get very little detail on it. My only change is UA students are tested on three foreign languages as well: English, Chinese, and Korean. They're expected to have a high level in all of them, mainly to add emphasis on just how hard UA is to get into (1 in 300 acceptance rate is fucking INSANE)
Practical portion!! This is completely revamped. Instead of the robots, current UA students are used as stand in civilians during a villain attack in a simulated urban area (a la the canon exam). There's only one giant robot, a few smaller ones, and the zero pointer. Students are put into groups of ten and are tasked with working together to rescue as many people as possible and take down as many villains as possible. Villain points are still emphasized over rescue points (which can now be gained from rescuing civilians and taking down the zero pointer, though very few do the latter), and the UA students are given pathways under the simulated area they can escape to if need be for safety. The practical feels more well rounded and realistic this way.
Also, this gives Shinsou an actual reason to be pissy about not getting into the hero course; the reason he got so few points in the practical was because as soon as the other people in his group found out about his quirk they refused to work with him, tanking his chances of almost any villain points (the mini villains are also robots). It also actually shows discrimination against people with 'villainous quirks' in hero society, something Horikoshi bought up but conveniently forgot about.
Kaminari doesn't have Whey Mode, it's a huge weakness and it's insane no one ever takes it seriously because of how big a safety risk it is for him. He can give himself nerve damage or kill himself if he uses his power too intensely, yes, but that's it.
Iida Tensi actually dies after being attacked by Stain.
Inko Midoriya is told about One for All and All Might's identity. She deserves to be in the know and it gives both All Might and Izuku another person for their support systems; she's the main character's only parent and yet she's so uninvolved in everything. It's disappointing. She would get more of a chance to voice her worries to both Izuku and Yagi, and she and Yagi could actually develop a friendship, which in all honestly Yagi really needs.
Momo is Class President and Tenya is Vice President.
Also like... Momo actually gets a chance to show off how powerful and strategic she is before we see her weaknesses hurt her. She's one of the most potentially powerful character in the fucking show die to her ability to literally create anything and yet we barely see what she's capable of before she is functionally rendered useless due to the author's inability to write female characters. I do like her arc about how her insecurities can get the best of her in the worst times and overcoming it but I want to expand on that. I want several scenes of her being academically and physically fantastic, top of her class, winning spars and overall seeming like the perfect up and coming hero, and THEN in the Sports festival, where she's one of the last few players, that's when we see her freeze up for the first time when one of her plans goes completely out of wack. And then, later (bc I'm putting the first villain arc as the Stain arc so USJ happens after that) when they're attacked for the first time, totally unprepared, she freezes up again and is saved by Jirou. This establishes her weakness - when she's in a situation she hasn't planned for or can't control she freezes up and that gets the best of her. Her arc is then learning how to better improvise in the heat of things (possibly becoming closer friends with Midoriya due to his ability to do exactly this) which she gets to show off during the Final Exams.
Also GIVE NEJIRE MORE PLOT TIME. Her, Mirio and Amajiki are meant to be a TRIO. I want her to get just as many fight scenes and emotional scenes as the other two, and let her be an inspiration to some of her younger classmates as well who also may have less conventionally strong Quirks, like Uraraka or Hagakure!!
Speaking of which: let Ochako be overpowered god damn it. Gravity manipulation is ALWAYS op (just look at Chuuya from BSD) and yet Ochako's never allowed to be just as powerful as she really should be. She has the potential to be one of the strongest characters in the series - she could basically neutralize as many hits or weapons as she could touch, could crush people into the ground with gravity, make herself or other people faster by making their feet lighter, or any other number of things but we never get to SEE IT!!
Also Ochako's foil is now Twice and Hawks kills Toga instead. I love both of them but Twice is unquestionably the more interesting character between the two from a narrative stand point and makes a very good foil to Ochako.
Hawks should have been used as a scapegoat for the Commission. From the beginning we've seen how he was basically brainwashed and conditioned to see everything they did as right; yet even when given chances to go against them that people in situations like his did take he continued looking up to them and supporting their actions. Like maybe after Dabi released the video of him killing Twice; the Commission uses him as a way to be like "hey, see!! We're the good guys!! He's the bad one so he's gone now!" Hawks killed for them and believed in them till his end and his reward would be either dead or as good as, a scapegoat for a mission they gave him. A tragedy of his own making, because he had chances to step away from them but chose not to. It would also be used to show how while the Meta Liberation Front aren't the good guys... well, neither are the HPSC. Like, at all.
Nana Shimura was a vigilante not a legal hero
And I've reached post character limit. Damn

Ooh, we're talking about Rei? Alright, here we go!
The Todoroki family arc WAS one of the greater aspects of MHA. Keyword: was. It was great until Horikoshi decides to redeem Endeavor. The same man who practically bought his wife. The same man who neglected his three other children, Fuyumi was parentified, neglected Toya and Natso, Toya had constant breaks of his neglect, made a 5-year-old Shoto THROW UP from training so hard, physically and emotionally abused the shit out of his wife where she was on the verge of a mental breakdown everyday. Like, it's so disgusting, honestly. It's a slap in the fact to all of their trauma. Like Endeavor had YEARS to change, but randomly wants to change??? Like dude gave zero shits that Toya "DIED" via from his mental breakdown of his flames and carried on like nothing fucking happened. Also, I just wanna say people who also villainize Fuyumi can also get a big fuck you. Fuyumi just wanted a normal ass family and pushed all of her feelings in her traditional, sexist household. People react to trauma in different ways. Sure, Fuyumi doesn't always handle things the greatest, but the girl was made to look over her siblings at a young ass age. The problem with redeeming Endeavor is that, there's just somethings you can't say sorry for or fucking atone for. Buying your wife, neglecting all three of your kids, physically abusing your youngest son, physically and emotionally abusing your wife then locking her away from her children for 10 years is just not grounds to redeem someone. I thought MHA was good because Shoto saying fuck you to his dad and not forgiving was so refreshing but then paints Natsuo as the bad guy for not forgiving him, and having Shoto consider forgiving his father within one FUCKING YEAR after YEARS of abuse is just baffling to me. Ik Horikoshi is shit on writing women, but, I want to know what Rei is like outside of her dynamic of being a mom. I wanna know what her true personality is, because her abuse doesn't define her. I wanna also know more about Fuyumi because it's clear to me her parentification even carried over into adult, and even with her teaching elementary kids. Fuyumi also deserves to be pissed off at Endeavor. Shoto, Natsuo, and Dabi have shown them being PISSED at Endeavor, and they have EVERY right to. I just wanna see Fuyumi growing out of her parentification Endeavor clearly put her through.
fuck endeavor and his big toe looking ass People can change, yes. But not abusers who do the most godawful things to their family and don't atone for it. Fuck Endeavor.
Well said, anon👏🏾
I agree that the Todoroki past was a really good aspect of the MHA world before they redeemed Endeavor. It was a great aspect of world-building and it was refreshing seeing a character that wasn't begging for their abusive parent's love or acceptance. Then, 4/5 of his victims decided to rally around him and support him for the mess he created...
Why.
I'm actually really glad you brought up Fuyumi because I agree. She wasn't only neglected, she was parentified. And this wasn't something that happened when Touya died or Rei was committed, via the Touya flashback her parentification started at least around the time Natsu was born. She wants a normal family because it's the only way she knows how to cope with that childhood trauma (yes, parentification is traumatic). Yes, she doesn't go about it in a great way but we need to stop expecting victims to react perfectly. Nastu and Shoto made the choice to play nice to make her happy, she didn't force or demand them to.
Fuyumi, overall, deserves more agency. It would have been great for both her and Rei to be something outside of their trauma and supporting their abuser. They also deserve to be angry.
(I've noticed that Hori doesn't really make women in his story angry. I mean, Mirko sometimes but that's more her gag than anything. They all either cry or when they're being "strong" he just gives them this face 😐 (I'm not exaggerating: Rei, Momo, Inko, Uraraka, etc.) I mean, I don't expect a shonen mamgaka to know how to write feminine rage well, but MHA is just pathetic when it comes to this)
Hori got me fucked up for the way he treats Natsu. He's the only one able to see last the trauma/abuse (probably because he was the most removed from it) to be able to make healthy choices and create boundaries. Yet Hori over here wants to paint him in a negative light for calling out Endeavor repeatedly. It's the same thing with people who criticize Bakugou; they're made out to be in the wrong (Monoma, the pros, the journalists, etc.) even though what they're saying is completely valid.
I would also like to point out that Endeavor only changed once he got what he wanted. Not when his son died because of him. If he was going to really change, don't you think it should have been when his actions resulted in dire consequences?

Bnha 391 and General Small Comment;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok so i didnt like a lot of things with bnha lately for most of the things, especially how story deal with its villains. Yeah, it is not over but until now, i dont think its good. Story focus on power more than it focus on actually adressing the flaws of society author build up at first place.
- Deku hasnt speak to Shigaraki yet but until this point, the way he dealt with villains, his interaction with them isnt good enough. like, you cant change things by keep saying everthing black and white or saying there is hope. I think story didnt give enough  character development for Izuku to come that point so at least, i hope, Shiggy will do something about it.
- Todoroki family plot bad. It was always bad because of how much story focus on Endeavour’s bad written redemption arc, he literally choose everyone over Touya since beginning until the end, i hate how he casually hugs him and speak over him when Touya was talking. Guy kinda feels guilty, yeah, but he express that ‘guilt’ in a very selfish way that it drives me nuts. Literally your typical abuser. I cant believe of all people, Endeavour has to be the one who close to him, not Rei, not his siblings but him...And with other family members too. I think some people already talked about this, that main problem with Todoroki family is that they keep blaming him for speaking up and once again, if this is the final arc for Todo family, Fuyumi and Natsuo’s speech sucks.
With Shouto, i think the problem is that bnha is a story about saving people’s hearth, not psychically defeating them and as readers, we should witness that change between Shouto and Dabi, that beginning point (like ‘your power’ scene for Shouto) didnt happen yet. And i wonder, do anyone remember um fake heroes plot? Endeavour’s bad hero career with how violently he attacks towards criminal from Twice’s speech chapter or how he almost killed Koichi in vigilantes? Dabi’s speech? What is the point of all of these things, if its not gonna be adressed properly, especially between Dabi and Shouto since they are villain and hero. I know its not over but until now, it was bad. To be honest, only thing i am satisfied with Todo family plot is Rei and Touya interaction. It looks like the only one its completed for final arc. Because she literally choose Touya over millions to save him, no justification, no victim blaming, no anger, just a worried mother, calling her son’s name and tells that she is sorry, and thats it. She doesnt make whole speech and self pity, unlike Bakugou and Endeavour. See the difference. And if author wasnt so obsessed with Endeavour’s nonexistent redemption arc, i am sure that we would get more of Rei. She did what she could do best for Touya as civillian, ordinary person. This part of story is fine but others? Bad.
- Allmight and others too. I dont want to talk about every detail because you know the summary, flaws of society isnt adressed properly/at all and story focus on power dynamic and etc.
But for at least this chapter, i would like to say, i kinda like this one. Uraraka and Toga development, interaction. At first, Uraraka would brush off everything Toga said and does, which makes sense since she was from other side. And Toga would talk your typical villain but after that Toga crying scene, Uraraka seems to be able empathize with her than many other heroes ever could for villains. The way she just accepted that she was wrong about her, that she changed her mind, she also knows that she is in pain and she says sorry, she is not angry, she is not rejecting her, she tells her that she found her. I mean, look at her face when she speaks to her. Like, great start, Uraraka. I think there are still many issues with story and how fast everything happens but i really like this one. It feels like an actually hero speech who geniuely wants to empathize with villain, completely stranger, just a girl who is like her. Unlike before, she doesnt talk like a robot with ‘you did commit crime so everything happens to you, you deserve it’ type of attitude. No. This time Uraraka is different.
At least for this chapter, for now, Uraraka Ochaco is rising.
Edit; I made it Clear that i write this based on my personal opinion. Literally, every second of this post is "i think". Certain people use this to insult and harass me. It just shows what kind of people they are. If you disagree, make your own post without mentioning/making me involve in any way. Of course, if you want to debate about series with respect, i dont mind. I dont think being kind is too hard.

BNHA : No you see, its all the family fault that Touya turned out that way cause they didn't stop them or said anything!!
Me: WHAT COULD THEY HAVE DONE?!? Fuyumi and Natsuo where CHILDREN at the time, even if they had told their brother to "stop it" What makes you think he would have listen to them if he was that far gone, also it is not their job to look after their brother that is for the parents to do, you shouldn't put that burden on a child! Also, maybe the reason that Fuyumi and Natsuo didn't tell another adult about what was going on in their family because again they're CHILDREN but maybe they where scared of their father, they saw what happened to their mother when she "failed" to stop their bother and think that would happened to them on top of that what makes you think they would have been believed or taken seriously the first time they would have told someone because AGAIN they are children and that's not even getting into how much money and power Enji has considering he's a hero and with all the BLATANT hero worshiping that goes on in this universe, I'm pretty sure it would have been impossible.
BNHA: Yeah, well, Rei could have-
Me: REI. IS A. VICTIM. It is shown plan as day, from the beginning that she came from a poor family that pretty much sold her off and with the new information they would have paired her off with a cousin to "keep the bloodline pure" or some shit, their marriage wasn't even based on love, it was an agreement more then anything, she was trying to survive and this seemed like the best option for her, SHE HAD NO OTHER CHOICES! Yes she agreed to have more kids with Enji but I ask you, did she even really had the power to say no? She was just meant to be a house wife and take care of the kids and the moment where she "failed" like when she tried to stop Touya she got punished for it, WHAT COULD SHE HAVE DONE?! Run away? Did you want her to leave the kids? Runaway with the kids? Do you HONESTLY think Enji wouldn't have tried to track her down or spun the narrative around to make it seem like Rei was crazy and brain washed the kids? Let's not even go get into how women are already not believed in these kind of situations, on top of all that, she was poor, she had no money and no power, nowhere near as much Enji has, where it be his size, his quirk, the fact that he is a man and a man that as seen as a hero to the public eye, her words would mean NOTHING! When Rei finally snapped and hurt her child Shoto, not only did she quickly realized what she did and tried using her quirk to cool him off, but the very moment she did that, they sent her away to the mental hospital no questions asked! They kept her there for 10 YEARS pretty much, meanwhile Enji, who was the one harshly training Shoto got to stay with the kids, and to add on to it Shoto, even at age 5, didn't even blame his mom for it, he clearly understood with was his dad.
BNHA:.....
Me: YEAH, maybe next time THINK before you handle topics like this.

Tw: talks about endeavor’s abusive behavior
None of the todoroki’s should be “required” to forgive endeavor’s abuse. He hurt them deeply and traumatized them all. Is he trying to be better? Yes. But it’s still been over 2 decades of abuse both physical and mental. He has ruined lives and they are not “required” and should not be told that they “should” forgive him because he’s family or because he’s trying to be better. I have forgiven past abusers, and I’ve also not forgiven past abusers. Either way, the abuse sticks with you years later when you’re trying to move on even if it’s no longer happening.
The fact that Shouto is making strides to work with endeavor is very big of him, but he is still not obligated to respond to endeavor in any way, especially not in a positive light.
Fuyumi is trying so hard to be a peace keeper, she always has, and that’s her prerogative, she’s more than welcome to do that, but she should not try to force the others to. (No hate to her, I love her so much don’t get me wrong and she’s very strong)
Natsuo is completely valid. Spite endeavor, you go, man
Dabi is going about it his own fucked up way and he should get therapy. They should all get therapy, but the bitch (dabi) is. Unwell.
Rei. Get a divorce. Take the children.
Either way, forgive or don’t forgive, neither option is wrong. It’s their trauma and they get to choose how to deal with it.
Except for dabi. He just makes bad decisions. A lot of people in this anime/manga do. But so do I. I read triggering fanfics just to feel less alone, so what can I say? We all have our issues. He turns his anger outwards I turn mine inwards.
Also, I’m not caught up on the manga so I don’t really know what’s going on, these are just thoughts that I’ve had because my father implied that i schools forgive one of my abusers a while ago and I want to scream about it so instead of processing my own emotions, I wrote about the Todoroki family drama lmaooo

Your meta about endeavor's 'redemption' is really good, extremely well thought out and written 👍
Can I ask you about a specific part of the todoroki plot?
Shoto and fuyumi specifically, do you think that their priorities are a little messed up sometimes?
Like yeah shoto is trying to overcome his hang-ups with endeavor but his interning under him and basically giving him exactly what he wanted (in learning his techniques and everything) the best way to 'become the hero that he wants to be' ? Does that even make sense from a goals perspective?
Shoto says that he's there to use endeavor but he never went any further than that, and in giving endeavor the chance to show him what kind of father he's going to be, it really does seem like he came crawling (but pretending to demand) back to his father, to get what he wants from him and for a second chance at a happy family, despite the fact that endeavor pretty much ruined their lives over what amounted to nothing.
And fuyumi's even worse, in the dinner chapter whining to Shoto about 'burying the hatchet' and asking natsuo to be there in the first place, she doesn't seem to care at all about their feelings, or about toya literally dying from neglect. (what happened with toya was basically that right?)
Can I ask how you feel about this?
Hmm. I guess the question is do you think the priorities are messed up as a character, or as a person?
Because I see Shoto's priorities, as a character, are messed up, but while Fuyumi largely makes sense with what has been established for her character, if that makes sense, even if her actual priorities are messed up about the abuse.
I've said it before, but my problem with Shoto reconnecting with his father (beyond, in all honesty, it happening at all, because I'll freely admit I hate Endeavour) is how it happened: original Shoto hated his father, loathed him to point approaching madness in a way that really made it clear how similar he was to Dabi.
Then the Sports Festival happens, and he talks to Izuku, and I want to stress this part: Izuku doesn't say, 'Your father isn't so bad', he doesn't say, 'You can use him to your own benefit', all he says is, 'You are not your father'.
And honestly, I think it's the first time Shoto ever really heard that, ever really considered a life not defined by his father's shadow, one way or another, which is why it hit him so hard. But the thing is? There's nothing about... trying to talk with Endeavour, or anything like that, it's specifically about distancing Shoto from the idea of his father, that just because he also uses fire doesn't mean it's Endeavour's fire.
So you can imagine my confused fury when, next arc, after Shoto has been planted with the seed of being his own person... we hear that he's interning with Endeavour.
Because the thing is, Shoto's ultimate problem wasn't that he hated his father, it was that he let that hate consume his life. He has every reason to loathe him, really, it's just making hatred of Endeavour the cornerstone of his life means he's letting his father win just as much if he made obeying his father the cornerstone of his life.
The set up was there for him to start removing his father from his life, his mind, his focus, to go his own way without the burden of his father dragging him down, and this sudden desire to get use out him just conflicts with everything we'd seen out of him before that point, and from then on, Shoto was built off that new dynamic, the idea that secretly, Shoto liked his father to some extent the whole time, and was just driven off by his horrible behavior. The worst part of it is that Hori is building New Shoto well enough, since that point on he's been a largely consistent character, but it's just a different person than the one we were introduced to and I just can't like it, because I liked Old Shoto, I liked that we were going to watch this kid forge his own path and grow beyond his dad.
That's not even mentioning the nasty, clusterfuck of a problem that Shoto, of all people, knows how flawed Endeavour is as a hero. There's so much off on him going to Endeavour to learn to be a hero, when as far as we can tell heroics is the very reason Endeavour is the kind of man he is. Why does he want to learn that?
Fuyumi... the thing is with Fuyumi is that people react to abuse different ways. Shoto, Natsuo and Dabi all took after their father in personalities; when there was something they didn't like, they fought against it. They fought against it, honestly, like rabid animals.
Fuyumi, though, from what we can tell, took after their mother, and while Endeavour bit, clawed, and howled against everything he didn't like, no matter how unreasonable it was, Rei accepted her situation, meekly, until the point she was crushed under the weight of it.
Fuyumi just isn't a fighter like her brothers are. She doesn't want to reject Endeavour the way they do, she genuinely loves him, and wants them all to get along. It's not that she doesn't care about her siblings, she just honestly, truly, thinks it would be for the best if they all got along. And oh, there's definitely trauma in there, though she's not displaying it as openly as her brothers, and to some extent her wanting them to get along, even knowing what she knows, is probably shaped by her trauma to some extent, but she also just... loves her family, even Endeavour. And, let's be honest here, she's not the first person to love their father, even if he's done horrible things.
And... well, personally, that attitude makes my skin crawl, and if I could I'd have them all leave Endeavour far behind and live their Best Lives away from him and his influence, but as a person she's entitled to love him even if he's a dumpster fire of a human being. Ultimately, I'm not in a place where I can judge her for that choice... though she clearly needs some therapy, much like everyone else in that house.
(For the record, what makes her different as a character, with her wholehearted acceptance of Endeavour, compared to Rei's wholehearted acceptance of Endeavour, is that Rei is so traumatized by Endeavour that she had a psychotic break. That break was so bad that years later he's still not allowed to see her because of how badly she would take the very sight of him. Everything about Rei, narratively, says that at a fundamental level she should fear and loathe Endeavour in equal measures, because just seeing the image of him on Shoto's face was enough to trigger panic-fueled violent break down, and there's absolutely nothing that indicates she should have moved past that mindset before she appeared in canon. Fuyumi, on the other hand, was a largely blank slate, so her acceptance didn't have anything to conflict with like it did with Rei.)
Oh, and there was totally neglect happening with Toya, for the record. Not just neglect, a big part of it was how Endeavour raised him, built him really, as a tool with the single purpose of Being The Best to Surpass All Might, to the point where he had no life other than training and no idea how to be a human being. Everything really went to shit with Toya, though, when his dad basiclly abandoned him once his Quirk came in wrong, and then he had nothing left because Endeavour told him to give up on that one purpose Toya had devoted every part of his life to, without really doing the work to replace that gaping hole inside him. And then, for bonus points, he watched Toya fall apart in real time, frantically trying to earn his father's love without having any idea how to do it (much less understanding that he shouldn't have had to earn it at all), trying all the things that used to earn his father's approval.
Every time he tried to do better, to be stronger, it only hurt him. Every time his father deigned to notice his efforts, it only earned his anger. All the same, though, Toya didn't know any other way to live, any other way to act, any other way to possibly get his father's attention back, or anything to strive for beyond that attention, no matter how much all of this harmed him, and it slowly drove him farther and farther into a negative, self-destructive spiral of hatred and self-loathing until he fell apart. Spectacularly.
And this entire time, the only thing Endeavour did was yell at other people to resolve the situation, and fix his mistakes for him, because he didn't give enough of a shit to deal with it himself.

Ngl, I do find it funny that my most popular post is bashing Shota while my third most popular post is an analysis on Fuyumi. They’re not really part of the theme of this blog (shitting on Katsuki), yet they’ve still received the most attention out of anything I’ve posted 😂. Didn’t know so many other people hate Shota and love Fuyumi.
If you’re curious about my stats for the year of 2022, here they are:

meeting the todoroki's
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: shoto todoroki x gn!reader (+todoroki family)
summary: shoto takes you to a family dinner to make your relationship public, after months of dating in secret...
Tumblr media
shoto and you had been dating for quite a while now, yet your relationship was a bit of an open secret. he didn't mind mentioning you to his friends and wasn't shy to tell them he was in a relationship with you, but his family hadn't heard a single word about you yet. they didn't even know you were a friend of shoto's, until you came home with him for dinner one weekend.
shoto didn't introduce you when he arrived at his house, purposefully refraining from putting a label on his relationship with you. he waited until everyone sat at the dinner table – natsu, fuyumi, enji and shoto and you – until he started to shift towards the topic you two had came here for today.
"so, y/n and i wanted to tell you all something…"
everyone's eyes were on shoto, hoping that what came next would be good news. god knows this family didn't need any more drama.
"we've been dating for a while now… i just didn't want to tell you all right away, but i'm ready now…"
shoto was being blunt as ever, holding nothing back. there was a quiet moment in which natsu and fuyumi exchanged glances, before fuyumi was the first one to speak up.
"i'm really happy for you, shoto. you deserve to be with someone nice and y/n has made a great impression so far! right, dad?"
fuyumi glared at her father, just wanting him to be nice for once and agree with them. enji was still chewing on his food slowly, glaring at you and shoto. it felt like forever until he swallowed and spoke up.
"right… though you could've mentioned something earlier, shoto! well, as long as a relationship won't distract you from your school work, then i suppose i don't mind…"
that must've been the nicest thing shoto had heard in a while from his father. he was quite glad he was holding back on you. or maybe he just hadn't found anything to criticize yet.
"are you going to tell mom about it too?"
natsu asked and shifting the topic a little.
"i plan to. i've already sent her a letter, but whenever they'll let me visit her, i'll bring y/n along!"
shoto hadn't been very excited about telling his father about your relationship, but he wanted his mother to get to know you! he just had to wait for a chance to get to meet her again…

Thinking about the parallels between how much red is in each Todoroki's kids hair and their opinion of the father they got it from.
Tumblr media
It's not a direct comparison based on quantity, but that does play a factor. The more key element is the placement.
Tumblr media
Shoto's is the most obvious. His white and red hair is literally split down the middle and after his revelations at the sports festival, he starts feeling more torn about his feelings surrounding his father. Eventually settling on seeing him as a good hero but a flawed father that hasn't been forgiven but has room to change.
Tumblr media
Natsuo as all white hair, which makes sense. He's the one that's the most vocally critical and hostile to Enji in the household and is never shown to have fond memories of him. The red isn't there and never was, and neither is love for his father. ..or is there.
Tumblr media
Natsu did have red in his hair, at least for a time. But I believe it is still there, hidden and tucked away in his current hairstyle. It's always been there, even if it stays a few small strands, care for his father will always be there whether he wants to acknowledge it or not.
Tumblr media
At first glance Fuyumi is a similar way, her care about Enji being small and understated. She has less red than white afterall. But Fuyumi has red strands integrated throughout her hair. She is clear that she doesn't support what Enji has done but she has clear memories from before that point and that has colored her perspective. What she wants, more than anything, is for Enji to be integrated back into the family, for the family to be whole. Her red hair is inseparable from the rest of it because to her, more than any of her siblings, their father is an integral part of their family. And she's not ashamed to say it.
Tumblr media
And then there's the juicey changes with Touya. He was born with a full head of red hair, very obviously symbolizing his adoration of Enji. He was eager to be the prodigy Enji wanted and their relationship was positive, at least at the start. It's not an accident that Enji commenting on the first few strands of white in Touya's hair comes right before the first time we see him burn himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As his relationship with Enji strains, he gets more white hair until there's nothing left, until their relationship has completely decayed and Touya sets himself on fire. It's gone further than Natsuo's aggression and dismissive attitude. And that hatred spreads to the entire family. His white hair isn't enough to show that, so he breaks from the family completely, with pitch black.
Tumblr media
But it's not the whole truth. At the end of the day, it's still artificial dye and by removing that dye when he comes clean about his family ties, he also leaves himself open to that family coming back into his life.
Tumblr media
I wonder if that red might come back too.

If I were Fuyumi and I experienced:
Being concieved via eugenics, only to be deemed a failure for only inheriting my mother's quirk and completely neglected as a result
Having to step in as my younger brother's caretaker at the age of 7/8 years old due to my father solely focusing his attention on my youngest brother and my mother being forced to essentially keep my oldest brother under lock and key
Being completely isolated from my youngest brother by my father growing up
Witnessing my mother and youngest brother being beaten by my father
Witnessing my mother undergo a psychotic break from my father's abuse, resulting in her hospitalization
Having to step in as my youngest brother's primary caretaker because my father sure as hell can't/won't do it outside of training
Having to practically be EVERYONE's mother and having no one to take care of me
I'd not only want a functioning family, but I'd be holding in some resentment due to these circumstances. The groundwork is there and Fuyumi's motivations/position in the family ARE interesting, but as always, Horikoshi utterly fails in the execution and makes Fuyumi seem 1D as a result. Instead, she reprimands her younger brothers for rightfully wanting nothing to do with Endeavor, violates Shoto's boundaries by giving Endeavor his contact information, and absolves Endeavor of his part in making Toya the person he is today (even though she was a kid, so wtf was she expected to have done to stop him.

Redemption
Todoroki Clan x Todoroki reader
Synopsis: You're the twin sister of Shoto and save him and Endeavor from Toya.
Warnings: violence, profanity, unstable family, trauma.
Words: 2k
Tumblr media
Being the daughter of a superhero came with a heavy burden to carry. But being Endeavor's daughter was what made it that much harder. The ambitious and hostile man managed to destroy the mentality of almost the entire family.
Your deceased brother, a psychologically unstable mother, and even the insecurities created at home were his fault, and his alone. But even knowing that, all the cruelty he did to you and your siblings, even after all the horrors, all you wanted was to see him proud for just a moment.
Your Quirk gave you the ability to control and create water. And to say this was a surprise was an understatement. You remember well when the first traces of your powers started to show, you were only 4 years old at the time. A brief trip to the doctor had made everything clear, it was as if her parents' powers had merged into one. While his twin brother Shoto had the ability to control both ice and fire, in you they manifested together. The heat of your father's fire nullified the ice of your mother's power, resulting in a Water Quirk.
Your father didn't meet many people with quirks similar to yours during his lifetime, so his ignorance of your powers allowed you much more freedom than Shoto to explore your abilities on your own. As he didn't understand, he preferred to leave you aside, focusing on training Shoto.
Your father became completely obsessed with making your brother a hero that surpassed All Might. The little attention you received from him in childhood, in the first few years after discovering your powers, is totally gone with the passage of time. You suspect he was only interested at first because he was perplexed by your quirk, it was pure passing curiosity.
The memories you have of your father are mostly painful. You always tried to maintain a relationship with him, to get closer to him. Even when everyone was revolting against the man, you kept your criticisms of him to yourself and stood by him. Sometimes when you had your moments alone, you felt terrible for trying to defend him, when all your dad did was look down on you. You were stupid, he was right about that.
You always dedicated a gift to your dad on his birthday, Father's Day, Christmas. On all the damn dates, but he didn't give a shit about you or your birthday. You don't know why you care so much about pleasing him, about making him proud. It didn't make any sense. Your rational side told you to ignore it and move on, but your emotional and dumb side told you to try. Trying to be the child he wanted so much, but you never quite knew how to do it.
08/08, 21:47 - Enji's birthday.
You were in the living room watching TV while waiting for your dad to come home. You had spent all morning preparing his birthday present.
At the age of 8, your grammar was not the best, so you asked your older siblings to help you write a letter. Natsuo scowled and strongly refused to help you, which made Fuyumi scold him for the way he spoke to you.
But your sister, sweet and kind, sat with you at the kitchen table to help you write. At the time you noticed the sad looks she gave as you put the beautiful words addressed to Enji on paper.
Shoto didn't mind helping you color a drawing that went with the letter, he even had a little fun in the process and made you finish the gift faster. You thought your dad would be sad that no one got him a present, so you did your best to make one.
You went over your bedtime just to hand him the gift. You've been waiting for him to walk through the door while watching a show on television. And as soon as you heard the lock on the door being unlocked, you jumped off the couch in excitement.
You ran up to him and stopped in front of him as you held out the gift.
"Daddy, look. Happy birthday! I made it myself!" Fuyumi gave a slight smile upon hearing your little lie, but she really didn't care. She thought it was cute, actually.
Enji took a good look at what you had and took it out of your hands. You watched excitedly as he opened it and skimmed through the contents in silence.
"So this is the kind of crap you waste your time on, y/n?" you immediately got scared after his scolding.
"While you could be training to get stronger, would you rather distract yourself with crude drawings?"
Natsuo bristled with shock upon hearing his father's words. And your brother was very, very furious, but remained silent, just like Fuyumi. He mentally thanked Shoto for already sleeping. Both your siblings were so sorry for you. How dare he say those things after all the dedication you've put into it? Fuyumi felt terrible remembering the words full of love you wrote in the letter.
"Don't give me more stuff like that again. Don't waste your time with trifles, that makes me waste my time too." He crumpled up the drawing and letter in one of his fists and threw them into the kitchen wastebasket.
By this time the tears were flowing freely from your eyes. Were you a waste of time? Is that what he said? When the first sobs were heard Natsuo took one of your little hands and decided that it would be better to put you to sleep, he imagined that this way you would forget and wake up better the next day. But he knew it was going to hurt you for a long time.
But right now, at this very moment, you've seen an unseen version of your father. Dabi's revelation caught everyone off guard. Was he Toya? Was Dabi your brother that everyone thought was dead? Endeavor always saw you and your siblings as a mere enterprise, but you noticed he didn't look at your big brother like that now. You saw in his startled look that there was feeling there. He was always such a serious and intimidating man, that seeing him completely frozen hit you hard. You thought you'd never see him so vulnerable.
"Toya!" You screamed and cried for him to stop. You were a baby when he left, but remembering the pictures of him as a child in the family albums and seeing him like this now, a murderer... He didn't deserve this, nobody did. You begged, but he wouldn't stop. "Please!" You wanted him to look you in the face, you wanted to stop everything to hug him. How was it possible to miss someone you barely knew so much? He was your family, your brother. He was alive, this was supposed to be a happy moment, it's not fair.
And as Toya leapt up in a rage to attack Enji, to finally get his revenge, you just wanted your father to move.
"Daddy!" Your hoarse cry was chilling. Bakugou and Deku immediately looked at you in your chaotic state, completely desperate. Meanwhile Endeavor felt his body turning cold, his heart stopping to pump the blood to the necessary places, he didn't want to believe that that was Toya. Alive. It seemed that there was nothing around him, he could only focus on him. He couldn't hear anything else, everything was muffled.
He's going to kill Dad and Shoto.
He's going to kill them and I can't let him.
Move on! Move, dammit! You wanted to move so badly, but your legs wouldn't obey. You wanted your father to do something, but even you can't move your fingers.
Weak. You were a disappointment. You can't do anything.
But then your body decided to take action. And you started to run to them, to save them. You felt your breathing fail and your diaphragm lock, your lungs no longer moved, only your legs. All your energy had gone into your feet. You can't pass out, it's such a short race. Just get out there and help them. And as you ran to your brother and father, Shoto noticed you coming closer with tears cascading down your cheeks.
"Y/n!" Your twin screamed angrily, but you knew he wasn't mad at you, he was scared. "Get away from here!" Both of your hearts fluttering. Him fearing for you and you fearing for them.
Shoto had already given up trying to make Enji react and when he was going to try to stop Toya on his own before you reached them, it was too late. Were you that close? How did you get there so fast? It was the adrenaline speaking for you, taking over your body and giving you strength you didn't know you had. For just a second he looked away. For a second he took his eyes off yours, and when he was about to look at Toya in front of him, he was already seeing you again. You two.
Shoto and Endeavor saw Toya being enveloped by a large wave of water that pushed Dabi back and protected them from the attack.
You made the water come together in a big bubble that enveloped you and Toya. You wanted to break out of the bubble and leave him trapped until him passed out without air, but you felt afraid to pass out first with the panic you were feeling. You tried to take the bubble away, but he was getting close to you. You tried to reduce the bubble's diameter to escape and get some air, but it seems that you didn't have the strength to do that anymore. You can only hold the water there.
Toya watched you. Silly little sister, he thought sadly. why would you do that? After everything Endeavor has done to you. After everything that monster did, what were you doing here? He needed to escape, he needed to breathe. He was going to get his revenge, but you were standing in his way. And if he needed to step over you to get to your dad, he would. He let the blue flames flow through his hands, the heat boiling the water, and both you and he were going to suffer for it.
"Father!" Shoto yelled at Endeavor, rousing the paralyzed statesman to see his two childs struggling. "He's killing her!"
You didn't resist the high temperature for a long time. Toya was already used to the burns, it wasn't even a pinch for him. You weakened and the water dissolved all at once, and you both stumbled gasping for air. Your skin was red and burning like hell. You wanted to scream in pain.
You were weak. You couldn't even do a simple thing. You just needed to hold it for a few seconds and get out of there.
Your breathing hadn't worked for a long time, it was a surprise that you managed to make all that effort in this state. What a horrible time to have an anxiety attack.
Everything was going dark and the last thing you saw was a burning Toya coming at you with a murderous glare. Enji couldn't believe it, all this happened right in front of him, and he didn't do anything. He let Toya hurt you and did absolutely nothing.
As soon as Endeavor saw his son come to you, he prepared to face Toya. Shoto immediately rushed to attack him and get you away from him. Enji wasn't going to allow you to die, he wasn't going to allow Dabi to kill you. For your and Toya. For his children.
Toya grabbed Shoto and started to increase the flames around they two.
"The favorite son killed by the loser!" Dabi laughed like crazy as he held Shoto tighter burning them both. But someone stopped Dabi before he committed a greater tragedy.
Best Jeanist immobilized him and took him away from the twins. And Endeavor, even though he was no longer paralyzed, did nothing.
You protected him and Shoto. That was the last thing he remembered as he opened his eyes and found himself face to face with a white ceiling.

"Oi." Bakugou croaked, having finally been revived by Kaminari. "D- Izuku. Listen up. I have feelings. For you."
"Oh, wow." Midoriya blinked. "Okay, wasn't expecting this."
"Shut up, I'm not done." Bakugou frowned. "I am also. Now aware. That you have feelings for me."
"Our whole life, keep up."
"What I want to know is." Bakugou gritted out. "How in the hell. Do you still like me after. All of that."
"Oh." Midoriya blinked. "Honestly? No idea."
Bakugou coughed up blood from the critical hit he had been dealt. "Y-" He gurgled, "You were. Supposed to think of something."
"I was? Whoops." Midoriya shrugged. "Well, to be fair, about ninety percent of it is just physical at this point."
"O-Oh." Bakugou looked down at his hands, as if he was suddenly very insecure about himself.
"If I had to be honest?" Midoriya hummed. "You're probably behind Ojiro in my rankings."
The room came to a stop.
"Rankings?" Kaminari spoke up.
"Yeah, of people who I'm definitely into." Midoriya said nonchalantly. "It goes Ojiro, Kacchan, Toogata-senpai, Toga, and then Aoyama."
"Toga HIMIKO?" Iida demanded. "Why her?!"
"Midoriya-chan," Asui croaked, "Are you into blonds?"
Midoriya thought about it. "Oh, huh. Never noticed that."
As Midoriya pondered this new revelation, the rest of Class 1-A looked at one another.
Todoroki excused himself, walked out of the dormitory, and called his sister.
"Oh, Shouto!" Fuyumi said, surprised, "You don't normally call on Tuesdays. What's up?"
"Fuyumi-nee." Shouto stated. "Can you help me dye my hair blond so that I may seduce my classmate."
Silence.
"I am not doing that for you." Fuyumi hung up.

*cracks knuckles* For the ask game, AU where Endeavor tries to be a better dad to his kids (Dabi included). The results are... mixed. Please.
Mixed is the best Endeavor can hope for, eh?
In this AU, Rei had a moment of clarity when Touya tried to strangle baby Shouto. She decided that she needed to get Shouto out of that house, no matter what. She tried to leave with all of her children except Touya. (Yes, she was abandoning Touya. She felt like she had no other choice.) Natsuo refused to leave without Touya. In the end, Rei left with Fuyumi and baby Shouto.
Endeavor returned home to find a note and two hungry boys demanding dinner. Importantly, because Fuyumi was gone, Endeavor couldn't parentify her. Endeavor was forced to become a single dad to two boys and quickly realized how much work Rei had been doing. He knew nothing about cooking or cleaning. He sent Rei expensive jewelry begging her to come back. She sold it so she could rent an apartment instead of staying at a women's shelter.
Touya was delighted to have all of his father's attention, and bragged about driving off Shouto and "the useless females." Endeavor realized that his son had toxic attitudes toward women that probably came from watching how his father treated his mother. Finally making a real commitment to changing, Endeavor started attending therapy.
After Endeavor took a leave from work to look after his sons and work on himself, the media found out about his separation from his wife. Endeavor received public criticism about about letting his personal life interfere with his work. People said that All Might was the number one hero because he never took breaks. Interestingly, All Might stepped up to defend Endeavor. All Might spoke publicly about how heroes deserved work-life balance and about his own exhaustion from overwork. Then All Might showed up at the Todoroki doorstep with frozen meals and an offer to babysit. Endeavor was so relieved to get help that he broke down ugly crying. Strangely, this is the AU where All Might and Endeavor become friends.
Endeavor never got back together with Rei, but they divorced amicably and developed a good co-parenting relationship. The kids spent equal time at both homes. Touya never set himself on fire because Endeavor got him into therapy and gave him more attention. However, Endeavor made the mistake of trying too hard to force Touya to get along with Shouto. It would have been better if Endeavor let it happen more gradually, but instead Endeavor kept forcing them to interact. This only made Touya resent his little brother more. Touya became hyper-competitive toward Shouto.
Shouto does not hate his father. However, Shouto grew tired of Endeavor constantly forcing him into family therapy with Touya. Endeavor would constantly ask Shouto to get along better with Touya, when actually Touya was one-sidedly insulting and bullying Shouto. There was nothing Shouto could do to fix this relationship because Shouto wasn't the problem. Shouto spends less time at his father's house as a result.
Ironically, when they became teenagers, Touya and Shouto bonded over how much they hated it when their father forced them together. Then they started picking fights with each other just to upset Endeavor. As you said, the overall results for this family were mixed. But it still beats canon!

Oh my god
Y’all I had a dream last night that the neighbourhood released a song called “Todoroki House”, which was about Shoto’s life from his pov (except the singer was a girl instead of Jesse for some reason)
There were references to Fuyumi, Natsuo, Touya, an Endeavor diss part, criticism of hero society, and his friends at school
One part of the song I do remember vividly is a verse where Shoto defends Rei by saying smth along the lines of, “they were told a raging mad woman, but I saw a broken soul because I was there”
the lyrics are already fading from my memory but if I could sing and knew how to make music, I’d definitely make a real life version of the song I dreamt because it was fuckin beautiful
