Interview with JOE (FUZZY CONTROL /B, Vo)

Q1: When did you first learn about hide?

A: I learned about him in the first year of middle school, when friends and I played songs by “X JAPAN” in our band.

Q2: Please tell us what kind of impression you had at the time.

A: When I saw his hair-flipping, violent musical performance, I thought, “How terrible! Woah!”

Q3: Please tell us of a way in which hide influenced you.

A: I learned about entertainment and stuff from him. I think he was always thinking about what to do to delight the audience.

Q4: What did hide mean to you?

A: A veteran of my field. He’s a mysterious person who makes me feel like he’s always near to support me even though he’s out of reach.

Q5: How did you collect information?

A: He was always appearing in magazines, that was the main thing, and I was also looking for rare old videos in used record stores.

Q6: Out of hide’s songs, which is your favorite and why?

A: “ROCKET DIVE”, because it’s the best. I got a lot of courage from that song. Also, that guitar solo is on point. In high school we played it at lives over and over again.

”What happens to you when the pit takes over?”

“I don’t really know. I just know it feels good.”

(Welcome back to head cannon alley where Jason isn’t really present during his pit episodes and instead goes into a floater like state. He doesn’t really know what’s going on all he knows is that the pit is indulging on his more morally gray actions.

Also it’s a head canon that the pit episodes gives an almost euphoric state, so you feel good when they happen. They’re addictive, which adds another layer onto why it’s hard to fight against them, to stay in control.)

mm....something about how Kingsley tries to hold the Nein at a bit of a distance at first while he's still figuring things out, still trying to confront all those fragments of shattered memories and lovely dreams, still trying to piece together who he wants to be.

But he still falls head over heels for Caleb immediately. And he feels comfortable acting on those feelings, fond and playful and teasing. He insists he isn't the same--not Molly, not Lucien; no clearcut, easy answer. But he doesn't at all object to Caleb still calling him his Circus Man, echoing the endearment with one of his own.

Just...all the little things about Tealeaf that stay the same when it comes to his Magician. All those feelings that never changed--

9x01 | A New Beginning

Talking out loud to myself here, 2 years late to the party, so I'm sure someone has picked over this detail already, but I'm rotating the severance orientation survey question #4 in my brain. "What is Mr. Eagan's favorite breakfast?"

What exactly is the purpose of this question? We can gather by the previous question, "Please name any U.S. state or territory," and Helly's ability to answer it, that the severance procedure is meant to leave general knowledge intact and only erase personal memories. We see Milchick tee up the answer for this question in the next episode when we flash back to Helena's pre-op. "He used to drink three raw eggs in milk each morning." (side note: ew) I'm assuming he tells this to every new employee as part of the protocol; he gives them the correct info and tests whether the innie still remembers it post-op.

Is this general knowledge? Maybe, maybe not. Helena says she's heard that before; obviously it's part of the family lore, so it makes sense for it to be erased as part of her personal history. But it might just be a historical fun fact to a layperson. It doesn't really make sense to ask it and 100% expect the answer to be "unknown" unless Lumon is purposefully editing out anything related to the company or indeed severance itself. It seems like every new innie needs the concept of severance explained to them in orientation, even though its a hotly-debated political topic, and it has been for several years. It's definitely common knowledge.

It's much easier to indoctrinate an innie if they start off without any preconceived notions of severance, Lumon Industries, or the Eagan family. They want them to be able to name any U.S. state, but not the one they were born in, and they definitely don't want them to know what Mr. Eagan's favorite breakfast is - at least, not yet. There's plenty of time for them to learn that in the Perpetuity Wing, or from the handbook, where Lumon controls the narrative.
