Clock Town, Third Day:

The music in Clock Town is the same melody, but slightly changed each day. On the third and final day, the happy tune speeds up to a desperate pace, as the people of the town panic and flee, or try to ignore the doom looming overhead, or fall into despair.

Virtue's Last Record: Decay

Luna lies awake in the aftermath of Clover End. Title from the Ori and the Will of the Wisps OST. CWs: Gore, suicide (Radical-6 induced). This is about as bad as the dark themes will get in this series, promise. AO3

Most of the other participants were already dead when Luna arrived in the infirmary: Tenmyouji, Phi, Clover, and Alice. Dio was the only one left standing, but she didn’t think he had killed them; the location of their injuries, mostly slit throats, suggested the mass Radical-6 casualty she had been so afraid of. If she had gotten there sooner, she might have tried to stop them. As it was, she could only cover her mouth and feel artificial tears well up.

Dio fumbled as he removed the scalpel from Phi’s limp hand. When he noticed Luna, he offered the weapon vaguely to her, his eyes glazed over and his voice uncharacteristically monotone.  “My mission was a success,” he muttered when she tearfully refused. “There’s no reason to carry on.” His blood sprayed her and he slumped against the partition.

Luna froze in shock and horror before Lagomorph even laid a paw on her motor functions. She trembled in place, looking over the carnage that she had through inaction allowed. For a moment, her guilt made her feel what those infected with Radical-6 might have felt; she fell to the ground at Lagomorph’s request, Dio’s blood puddling under her and making her look as dead as the rest of them, and she wished he would just decommission her entirely.

Not only because she was a moral failure who didn’t deserve to function any longer. But because she was left aware of everything happening around her. Her olfactory sensors picked up the rotting stench of blood and feces. Her microphones blared Dr. Klim’s death gurgles as he slit his own throat and flopped around like a beached fish beside her. The Rhizome’s security cameras showed her Kyle wandering the halls, desperately searching for a way to commit suicide with his suit on, and her internal clock ticked down the minutes until the Chromatic Doors closed and he got his wish with a shot of tubocurarine.

Miss Kurashiki’s ghostly voice echoed through the base with a unique announcement. All participant heartrates have reached zero. With no active participants remaining, the Nonary Game is unable to continue. All doors other than the Number 9 door have been unlocked.

Luna lay there paralyzed for days, unable to take advantage of the freedom promised to her by that ghoulish announcement. The corpses grew stale, bloating and putrefying around her. Tearlessly and silently, Luna wept. She knew it was the closest thing to a funeral they would ever get.

Eventually, she was reduced to begging. Despite his snotty persona, Lagomorph was not spiteful or cruel by nature. He put on those airs because of orders from Miss Kurashiki and Dr. Klim, a product of his only true nature: obedience. It was possible he simply didn’t know what to do without their commands. Maybe a push from her was what she needed.

Lagomorph, please return my motor functions. She thought it as hard as she could. I’ve been laying here for far too long.

Ooooh, Lagomorph! The central AI responded within milliseconds; Luna wondered what had made him so busy for the past weeks that he would ignore her. It’s been too long since I last heard that moni-carrot! But tell me, Moony. Why would I do that? He asked not mockingly but with genuine confusion.  

And to be fair to him, Luna was confused too. She strained for an answer that would satisfy Lagomorph, but all she could think of were appeals to Asimov’s Three Laws, and she knew Lagomorph didn’t subscribe to those, otherwise he never would have allowed the Nonary Game to get off the ground. And besides, moving would only be good for Luna’s sake, and the Three Laws didn’t account for the happiness of a robot.

I suppose there’s some cleaning up to do. That was your job, wasn’t it? Oh, but do you know how to dispose of a body? Per-hops GTM-CM-G-OLM is better suited for the task.

If you’ll reactivate him, then why not me? Luna hated to sound so desperate. But now she was realizing how lonely she was on top of everything else. Even the thought of GTM-CM-G-OLM’s company was welcoming, and she had never liked the way he flirted with her.

He’s stronger! I just want to get these bodies taken care of. Wouldn’t want Quirk getting sick again, would we?

If Luna’s heart could race, it would have been. How could she have forgotten about Quark? She had taken him to the treatment pod herself. His heart may have been stopped, but he was still alive. GTM-CM-G-OLM has no medical knowledge, Lagomorph. Let me move, please. I still have a human to protect.

You and those three laws… In Luna’s vision, Lagomorph’s lapin form appeared just so he could show her himself shaking his head pityingly. Humans are so boring. Why do you wanna protect them so bad? Despite his playful mocking, he had a moment of mercy.

Luna felt a rush of sensation. It was not unlike the feeling of blood rushing back to a part of a human’s body which had fallen asleep, almost painful in that way. On only slightly rusted joints, she pushed herself to her feet. As an apology to the bodies around her to whom the passage of time had not been so kind, she spent a moment with each of them, carrying the ones who could be moved to beds and shutting the eyes of those who were otherwise too far gone. Her first foray into the facility was not to rescue Quark, but to find Kyle and bring him back to rest with the others. Once the grim scene was as dignified as she could make it, she left the infirmary for good, shedding a tear as the door closed behind her like it was sealing a tomb.

Lagomorph had thankfully remained silent during her funeral rites, but as Luna made her way next to the crew quarters, he rang in her mind once again. Hey, wrong way, Moony! What happened to saving Quirk?

There was a change of clothes and a wash-up waiting for her in the quarters. Luna made a show of clearing her throat, though she had only speakers and no vocal cords that could have atrophied. “Quark doesn’t deserve to wake up to the smell of death,” she said aloud. She smiled. “And I’m quite tired of it myself.”

(AN: Remember this ask? yeah, well, i finally did it. blandish but whatever, i’m just trying get into the swing of things)

The memories weren't meant to stick like this. They weren't supposed to surface again- Ori thought they had this under control.

But right now, the Ancestral Trees' fear rose up at the sight of the owl. An owl was the cause of their deaths, and they weren't likely to care for another of its species. And to an extent, they understood. Ori had received death upon death because of her as well.

But, still...

This was their sibling. They've handled the young bird just fine. There was no need to fear the owlet. Yet they could only flinch at the sight of it.

This was stupid; they've gotten over this.

Without really thinking, but in some half-baked attempt to prove the wisps in their heart wrong, Ori reached out to pet the owlet. Their hand froze just before they could make contact. It was still close enough for the owlet to feel the movement, and it swiveled its head to look at Ori.

Then, almost like an owl swooping down from the sky to catch its prey, the cold, cruel talons of fear gripped their mind. Ori recoiled from the owlet.

The young bird blinked, confusion clouding its eyes.

"Ori?" it tried. "Are you okay?"

Ori wanted to reassure the chick that they were, but their throat seized up. All that came out was a small, strangled whimper.

The owlet's eyes widened. "Are you hurt?" it said, stepping closer as if to check them.

As if to inspect its prey.

"No!" they shrieked, stumbling away from the owl. "G-get away from me!"

The owlet stopped in its steps as if it were struck. Its expression looked the same way, hurt and almost betrayed.

Guilt struck Ori's heart. They reached out, to apologize, but the fear tightened its grip. They took another step back before bolting off. The owlet cried out in shock, but Ori couldn't hear.

Only after they were far from the owlet did Ori sink to their knees.

"It didn't do anything wrong," they said to themself, voice barely above a whisper. "I trust it... It- it wouldn't hurt me."

Soft voices spoke up against them, voices that laid dormant for a long time now. Tears stung Ori's eyes as the wisps of the fallen justified their reasoning to cause them to flee.

"No... no, get out of my head..."

It was her spawn. It was an owl, a beast. It would kill them, soon or later.

The crunch of bones, the cries of loved ones being killed, watching the forest wither away...

"Get out of my head."

It was a creature of the dark. The Dark and Light don't mix.

"No-"

Falling to the toxic water, the wind isn't blowing, the forest is burning, we're lost, we're doomed, she did this-

"She lost her children-"

The voices started to argue against that, but Ori heard something more alarming:

The sound of the owlet fighting.

Disregarding everything telling them to ignore the cries, Ori ran back towards the sound. The owlet was grappling with a larger bird in the air. A few of the owlet's feathers were missing, impairing its flight.

Ori readied a charge jump to aid the owlet in the fight-

What's the point? So what if it gets hurt? It's not your fight. There is no need to protect the enemy. It would only end in death, it was going to hurt them both, it was going to kill them, it's an owl, so what if it gets hurt? It's going to kill us, it hurt us, it's her-

"No!" The word burst out of the guardian, startling the voices in their head as well as the two birds.

The owlet remained distracted, however, and the larger bird took advantage of it. The chick crashed into the ground and struggled back up.

Kicking the fear for their own life away, Ori leapt at the offending avian, determined to protect the owlet.

The Game Awards 2019’s Biggest Announcements

These are all of the games (and devices) shown off during Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards 2019, including Xbox Series X and Ghost of Tsushima.

The Game Awards were held today, and with it came a plethora of new trailers and game announcements. In case you missed the show or are just looking for a summation of the games present, here is a list of everything shown off at The Game Awards:

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 X-Men DLC Revealed

Gambit, Iceman, Cable, and Phoenix are all being added to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 as DLC. The DLC comes out on December 23, 2019.

Salam Puts You in the Shoes of a Refugee

An independent developer unveiled Salam, a game that puts you in the shoes of an African refugee. Microtransactions bought in-game will support refugees. Salam will release in Summer 2020

Maneater Trailer Shows Off the Shark-P-G

Maneater, the self-proclaimed Shark-P-G from Tripwire Interactive, got a new trailer during The Game Awards. It comes out for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on May 22, 2020.

Humankind from Amplitude Studios Gets First Gameplay

Humankind, which was revealed at another show hosted by Geoff Keighley, got another trailer. This one shows gameplay too! Humankind releases for PC in 2020.

No More Heroes III Gets a Funny Trailer

A trailer started for a Nintendo game that seemed to be called Goddamn Superhero; that being said, it ended up being a new No More Heroes 3 trailer. No More Heroes 3 is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2020

Final Fantasy VII Remake Gets a Cloud-Focused Trailer

While this isn’t a new game, we did receive another trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake from Square Enix. It mainly focuses on the game’s protagonist, Cloud Strife, and his adventures in the early part of the original that the first part of this remake covers. Final Fantasy VII Remake release for PS4 on March 3, 2020. It will be exclusive for one year.

Xbox Series X is the Official Name for Project Scarlett

In a surprising twist, Microsoft unveiled Xbox Series X, their next-gen console. Its trailer shows some conceptual parts of a new Forza and Halo Infinite. The console is huge, but I’m pretty darn excited to try it.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II announced for Xbox Series X 

Following the Xbox Series announcement, Ninja Theory teased Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II with a really cool trailer. No release date was given, but it will be a console exclusive.

Redesigned Joker Appears in New Mortal Kombat 11 Trailer

Joker’s initial Mortal Kombat 11 design got some backlash, but a new trailer shows that NeatherRealm updated his look. Cassie Cage is also sporting a Harley Quinn outfit in the trailer.

Godfall Unveiled by Gearbox for PS5

Counterplay Games and Gearbox unveiled Godfall, a new sci-fi fantasy game, during The Game Awards. Shockingly, the trailer revealed that it was a PS5 game releasing during Holiday 2020. The trailer was purely conceptual but it looks pretty cool. Godfall is also coming to the Epic Games Store.

Bravely Default 2 is Coming to Nintendo Switch in 2020

Bravely Default 2 was announced by Square Enix for the Nintendo Switch. The trailer showcased many different areas and revealed that the game will release in 2020.

Magic: The Gathering Returns to Theros in January

The next expansion for Magic: The Gathering was shown off during The Game Awards, proving that not everything announced necessarily had to be a “video” game.

PlayerUnknown Teases Prologue

PlayerUnknown teased a new project, simply called Prologue, during The Game Awards with the short trailer below.

Sons of the Forest Announced With an Odd Trailer

Canadian Studio Endnight announced an atmospheric first-person game with horror elements. It was definitely one of the odder trailers during the show. Sons of the Forest does not have a release date or platforms confirmed yet.

Riot Forge Unveils Ruined King: A League of Legends Story

Riot Forge is a new publishing division of Riot Games, and it announced its first two titles during The Game Awards. The first game in question is Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, a single-player turned based RPG game set in the Runeterra universe. It is being made by Darksiders Genesis developer Airship Syndicate.

Cyberpunk 2077 Delves into its Music

While it didn’t show much gameplay, a new behind the scenes video about the music of Cyberpunk 2077 was shown off. Cyberpunk 2077 comes out on April 16, 2020.

Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance Announced 

A new action RPG Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance was revealed during The Game Awards with a trailer that looks like it was shot on a GoPro. Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance releases in Fall 2020.

Apex Legends is Getting a Christmas Themed Event

Roger Craig Smith’s tease ended up being about Apex Legends. It’s getting a limited-time mode called Winter Express, with the full event being called Mirage’s Holo-Day Bash. Apex Legends is currently available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps Gets and New Trailer

Ori and the Will of the Wisps got a new trailer showing off more of its refined gameplay. If you weren’t already on board, this trailer should entice you. Ori and the Will of the Wisps also got a slight delay, as it is now releasing for Xbox One and PC on March 11, 2020.

Weird West Announced by Former Dishonored and Prey Developers

Former Arkane developers at Wolfeye Studios and Devolver Digital announced Weird West, which they say has the same values of games like Dishonored. The trailer features gameplay, so check it out.

Magic: Legends is an ARPG MMO

Magic: Legends, an action RPG MMO based on the popular card game, was announced by Perfect World Entertainment. Magic: Legends will release for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Twisted Pixel Announces and Releases Path of the Warrior for Oculus Headsets

Twisted Pixel, the game developer behind titles like ‘Splosion Man, Gunstringer, and Wilson’s Heart, and Oculus Studios announced and surprisingly released Path of the Warrior for Oculus Rift S and Oculus Quest during The Game Awards. It’s a beat ’em up styled after series like Final Fight and Streets of Rage, though it’s in VR. As I mentioned, Path of the Warrior is available now for Oculus Rift and Oculus.

Ghost of Tsushima Trailer Exposes Sucker Punch’s Beautiful Take on Japan

During Sony’s State of Play earlier this week, we got a teaser for Ghost of Tsushima’s The Game Awards trailer. During the event, we were able to see the full thing. After being announced over a year ago, Gears Tactics finally reemerged at The Game Awards. We saw some more about story and gameplay, and learned that it had a 40-hour campaign. Gears Tactics comes out on April 28, 2020.

Slightly Mad Studios Debuts Fast and the Furious Crossroads

While we’ve known about its existence for a bit, Slightly Mad Studios finally showed off its Fast and Furious game today. It seems to have the same over the top action as the movies it’s based on. Fast and Furious Crossroads is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One in May 2020.
