katherine is descended from a wealthy and noble family. her family belonged to the untitled primal nobility of bulgaria.

she grew up in a loving home and had a beautiful childhood. her father granted her a good education and although he was strict, she had a few freedoms. katherine also had a very strong bond with her mother, whom she absolutely loved.

since she grew up in her small family’s ancestral home there weren’t any children that were her age and of her status to be allowed to play with (her father was pretty strict about that!). however, katherine had a younger sister who was about a year younger than her with whom she was pretty close. their relationship was a good one although both sisters were as different as day and night. katherine was always bolder and braver than her younger sister. contrary to her, katherine (or rather katerina) liked to live by her own rules (but she was not considered rebellious or something like that – katherine just knew how to get things the way she wants and got away with them).

for example, katherine wanted to try some traveler spells or at least wanted to know something about it (their father doomed travelers as ‘workers of the devil’ and therefore forbade it). katherine’s younger sister was also more cautious and while they were both romantics at heart, katherine was the only one who actually indulged in some innocent flirts (longing stares, letters, some stolen kisses) up until the point katherine fell in love with a boy and ended up pregnant.

her sister and mother helped her through her pregnancy. her sister was just as excited as she was although they both knew that the pregnancy is going to have consequences for katherine. the good relationship with her father, unfortunately, broke off completely due to pregnancy and he didn't even want to look at her although he continued to provide for her until she gave birth.

after recovering from childbirth, katherine was immediately banished. her mother and sister had trouble holding back the tears and letting her go and even her father seemed insecure about his choice in the last moments but followed through. despite the harsh treatment, katherine was sent to no complete strangers but to distant relatives in england.

katherine cried herself to sleep in the following weeks and even months despite appearing brave during the day. in the first few months (up to the first year) she hoped for a letter or for a message that she can come back. she often tried to write her mother or sister but never sent the letters away.

katherine was convinced that if she marries and 're-establishes' herself, she can go back to bulgaria and see her family again.

after she had escaped klaus and elijah, she foolishly made her way back to bulgaria in the hopes that it was far enough away for her to hide and be safe. finding her dead family crushed her. it absolutely destroyed and disturbed her. she never felt safe afterward and it added a lot to her starting paranoia. katherine made sure that her family was buried and with the exception of 1498, never set foot into bulgaria and also rarely / hardly spoke bulgarian again.

before all the bad things happened, katherine desired to marry one day (a marriage out of love) and have many children. however, unlike many other vampires, she is not bitter that children are no longer an option as she has accepted being a vampire.

Every ship is a valid ship and Larian did well with how romanceable all the party characters feel with each other, the chemistry they all have.

And.

Larian did something to the core of my being with the way they wove parallels into Gale & Shadowheart's wounds. Now, forgive me, I don't have screencaps, BUT

The way that both believe these wounds are their fault, and that penance is the only thing that will ease this pain for good.

The way that both believe these wounds are because of mistakes they are both making now, and mistakes they made in youth, when really all they are is markers of (chronic) pain due to abuse. And the ways that trauma can manifest as illness, and that the crushing thing about that is that trauma survivors then blame themselves for not being enough for others (sound like a certain wizard we know??)

And how, when he finally opens his mind to her (the tadpole does NOT connect your minds involuntarily), it is with a hand over his heart. (I have to look again but I am 99% certain it is her wounded hand)

But it goes beyond that, because of course it does. And here's where the diabolical geniuses at Larian get me.

Gale's sex scene, on a Shadowheart origin. The first thing she does to him is lean into (and kiss????) his orb scar.

And the first way that he introduces her to Sparkly Weave Pleasure™ is by taking her wounded hand in his and channeling what is ostensibly a very good feeling through it.

There's something here about recognizing and tending the wounds in each other, and turning them into sources of goodness and strength. Something about surviving and healing from trauma and being rid of that pain — eventually, potentially after years of enduring it — together.

Anyway I'm not normal about them!!!!!! Where're my galeheart girlies at!!!!!!

I said something similar under someone else's post regarding Gale and Shadowheart, but I wanted to say it again on my own post. Gale essentially gushes over Shadowheart in the same way Astarion gushes over Wyll. This is why Wyllstarion and Galeheart are two of the best ships. Of course I ship all the ladies together because wlw is my cup of tea, but wyllstarion and galeheart are my designated mlm and m/f ship.

Thinking about end of act 2 Shadowheart and Gale in a relationship man. Gale starts act 2 thinking he's going to blow himself up for his Goddess, Shadowheart thinks she's going to ascend to Dark Justiciar, they give in to their feelings for each other for one night, thinking it's going to be the last time either of them get the chance to experience intimacy, and it's with this person that they're in love with...

Then days later, Shadowheart has lost every idea of who she is, is being told she may have been kidnapped, and is hurtling towards a reckoning she had no idea about and did not want, and she turns to this man with whom she's found comfort and humanity and he turns around and says actually, I might go ahead and become a GOD-

"Shadowheart is a Disney princess" is a hill I will die on. Sooo yep Galeheart in Rapunzel and Flynn's outfits. Either I'm absolutely insane or this doesn't even look weird to me. I absolutely love Shads in bright colors, and Gale is always smoldering so like... Flynn just fits. xD
