Behind the Game: Sarah Elmaleh
Welcome back to our Behind the Game Spotlight, where we dive into the behind-the-scenes of video games. We chatted with voice actor/performer Sarah Elmaleh who is best known for AAA and indie videogames. She also consults on the voiceover process for indie games and helps organize games events (such as the IndieCade Awards and gamedev.world). Sarah sometimes refers to herself as a labor advocate, saying, “I dream out loud about how to make games a more richly collaborative and sustainable profession for actors and developers alike (and dig my elbows in where I can.)”
How was it voicing Lucifer’s little sister in Afterparty?
It was wonderful! I mean, I was a big fan of Oxenfree, I thought it had such a strong voice and innovative dialogue mechanics, so I was thrilled to be working with Night School Studio. And I LOVE Dave Fennoy’s work (Lee!!), so it was a delight to be voicing his sister.
Once I locked into Apollyon’s dry, close-to-the-vest power and humor, it was grand to live there. And the depth and nature of her concern for Lucifer were personal for me, that storyline was something I could relate to in my life. So yeah—pretty much wonderful all around.
You have voiced characters in games like Anthem, Gears 5, Days Gone, Afterparty, Gone Home, etc. How do you approach each project, and what does that journey look like?
We don’t often get much (or any) notice about who we’re playing, the project, or the words themselves. So, the reliable way for me to approach my work is to stay ready for anything. That means keeping my voice limber (not just on the day but in general, warming up regularly), keeping my imagination quick and vivid, tossing out any inhibitions that might get in my way, and getting into a focused, receptive, playful headspace going into the session. That applies to Anthem, which I worked on for years, as it does to Days Gone, which I worked on for four hours. And, in that case, I had no idea who I was going to be voicing or what the project was beforehand!
What is one thing you wish people knew more about this profession?
I think it’s what I was getting at in terms of my ‘approach.’ More often than not, we go in knowing nothing. We hear a description, see a bit of art, and go with our gut. We read things for the first time, often out of context and without a scene partner, maybe twice or three times in a row, and that’s it—usually one of those takes is what ends up in the game.Game voice actors are fully flying by the seat of their pants and making it look easy (or consequential, as the case may be). I’ve always been so in awe of my peers. I was a big fan of other voice actors well before I became one.
Which character (that you’ve voiced) do you most align with?
Ooh, it’s tough because they all have real bits of me, they might be dishonest otherwise…I used to think the Freelancer basically sounded like me, but then I did a podcast the other day with folks who had been playing as her for over a hundred hours, and they thought I sounded like a totally different person! She’s a bit tougher-sounding than me. She does have a lot of my higher convictions, wanting to help people, protect them…Lizzie Carmine definitely has my laugh, though; a lot of my goofier, wilder side comes out in Lizzie’s multiplayer lines.
Thanks, Sarah! If you want to check out Sarah’s latest work, you can follow her here, or hear her discussing her work over on this month’s Polygamer episode. If you’re interested in gamedev.world, or their recently completed fundraiser of over $80,000 for the Wings Fund GDC Relief Fund, you can sample their archives, including an all game VO Jackbox Zoom session with lots of Afterparty vets, on Twitch.

Rami Ismail’s GameDev.World will be a global game dev event translated into 8 languages
Rami Ismail, cofounder of Nuclear Throne maker Vlambeer, became frustrated trying to get visas approved for developers to come to the U.S. for his #1ReasonToBe diversity panel at the Game Developers Conference. Each year, applicants would get rejected. On top of that, one of the French-speaking speakers from Madagascar got low ratings because he spoke with a French accent.

Rockstar Games is Donating 5 Percent of their Revenue to COVID-19 Relief Efforts
March 31, 2020 8:41 PM EST
Rockstar Games has announced they’ll donate a percentage of purchases from GTA Online and Red Dead Online to COVID-19 relief efforts.
In a post on their Instagram page, Rockstar Games has announced they’ll donate 5% of their revenue from GTA Online and Red Dead Online to COVID-19 relief efforts.
“Starting April 1st, and continuing through the end of May, 5% of our revenue from purchases in our online games, GTA Online and Red Dead Online, will be donated to COVID-19 relief efforts,” says Rockstar Games. “These funds will be used to help local communities and businesses struggling with the impacts of COVID-19, both directly and by supporting some of the amazing organizations who are on the ground helping those affected by the crisis. As things progress, we will share more on these efforts.”
Rockstar Games isn’t the only company in the games industry lending a hand. Gamedev.world has formed the GDC Relief Fundraiser to help game developers affected by COVID-19 and GDC being postponed. Additionally, Humble Bundle has announced a new bundle to provide COVID-19 support, with 100% of the profits going towards the support. The bundle includes games such as Undertale, Hollow Knight, and Superhot.
“The Rockstar Games community is at the center of everything we do,” continues Rockstar. “We love seeing players immersed in exploration of our virtual world and connecting with each other through them. As our teams navigate these difficult times, we see our local communities in North America, the UK, India, and beyond being deeply affected. Small businesses have closed their doors, and communities who rely on government-provided support that they cannot access are struggling. The road ahead will be challenging, and we want to help where we can.”
Like every other industry, COVID-19 has left an impact on the games industry. GDC was supposed to happen this month but it got postponed to this August. Additionally, E3 got canceled, leaving developers such as Ubisoft and Microsoft to hold digital events instead.

How can video games be used to promote peace? | The Stream by Al Jazeera English As a Sudanese refugee living in Uganda, Lual Mayen used to walk three hours just so he could charge his laptop computer and play video games. Now, as the founder and CEO of Junub Games, he is winning awards and partnering with other developers to create games with a social impact. Mayen, of course, is not alone in this pursuit. As the gaming industry continues to grow, many other civic-minded gamers are working to educate players about humanitarian issues, from the plight of refugees and migrants to the horrors of war. Games for Change is a nonprofit that brings together game creators and social innovators. The organisation hosts an annual festival to help incubate video game ideas that can impact a range of social causes. Similarly, the GameDev.World event aims to increase diversity within the industry by hosting game designers from developing nations. In this episode, Lual Mayen joins Games for Change President Susanna Pollock and GameDev.World founder Rami Ismail to discuss how they are using their platforms to promote gaming for social good.
