are there any other anime you've seen or know of like red garden that are somewhat hidden gems or backlist series that are somewhat obscure?
I have watched a lot of anime.. spent most of the early 2000s doing so... quite a bit of it now obscure/not remembered. I have all these on DVD, some may be out of print, no idea where to stream them. Good luck!
5 Centimeters per Second (movie)- Slice-of-life that progresses through time. The prettiest scenery I've ever seen.
Armitage the III (movie)- cyberpunk, if you liked Ghost in the Shell, you'll probably like this (robot lady cop)
BoogiePop Phantom (tv series)- This would be the most like Red Garden, I think in that its spooky things happening to students and made in the early 2000s.
C-control (tv series)-- for those who like Digimon and are familiar with the horrors of capitalism. Like, if you ever thought the devil was in charge of electronic finances. But also like anime monster battles.
The Count of Monte Christo (Gankutsuou) (tv series)- if you liked the patterned look in the opening of Red Garden, all the art is like that. Very pretty if unfaithful adaption of the book.
El Cazador de la Bruja (tv series)- an amnesiac witch protected by a female bodyguard, on the run through desert towns. I think this would be for those who like Trigun, but wish it was more about 2 girls who were friends and developed a bit of more-than-friends feelings for eachother.
Haibane Renmei (tv series)-similar to RedGarden in that these girls have died and been reborn into new bodies and new roles in life, but there is no fighting, only self-discovery.
Jormungand (tv series)- a female weapons dealer adopts a child soldier boy onto her ship, and she has, to quote the back cover "a warped plan for world peace"
Kamisama Kiss (tv series)- would appeal to those who like Fruits Basket
Millennium Actress (movie)- made me cry! the mysteries of an actress' past are revealed through the roles she's played.
Noein (tv series)- I don't know how to explain it, its weird? Time travel, other dimensions. Unique art style. Did air on American TV, but was promptly forgotten about after.
Rahxephon (tv series)-what if Neon Genesis Evangelion was less depressing? Not sure how I feel about the ending. Technically a happy ending. but. hmmm.
Shangri-La (tv series)- posted about it on Tumblr years ago, an anime that addresses global warming with a spunky girl fighting for a better future, so may be even more relevant now than when it was made
The 12 Kingdoms (tv series)- Japanese people transported to fantasy worlds may be a common genre now, but this is when it wasn't all the rage, and it has very thought-out worldbuilding.

One of the things I love about Gankutsuou as an adaptation is that while the plot and characters are in fact, fairly wildly different, it’s one of the few adaptations of The Count of Monte Christo that gets the TONE and feel right. Possibly the only one.

Well, it’s that time of year again. The time to reflect on everything and really stop and think. 2021 had a lot of highs and lows when it came to anime, but through it all, we all came away with something grand.
A song. A story. A memory. 2021 gave us so many amazing things. And now, as we begin to close out the year, I want to share with you all my personal faves that I watched through it all.
Keep in mind, not everything in my list of what I watched was from this year. Some of it was from last year. Others are far older. But every title I watched this year to completion was time well spent. And these are my opinions on what I watched. I’ll keep it all under the read more so that this doesn’t take up your entire dash.
Now with that, let’s get to the list!
HERE IS FANDOM’S PERSONAL ANIME AWARDS FOR SHOWS THEY WATCHED IN 2021!!!!
BEST SCI-FI goes to Planetes
This was a toss up between Planetes and Astra: Lost in Space, but I felt that Planetes just beat out Astra. A series about space garbage men that has truly stood the test of time that more people should check out. If you enjoy stuff like Cowboy Bebop or Wolf’s Rain or shows with similar tones, then you’ll like this show.
BEST FANTASY goes to To Your Eternity
Listen, I know there were tons of Fantasy shows out there this year. And I tried to keep up with them. But the one that I feel earns the title of Best Fantasy goes to this show. Fushi’s journey and the world he inhabits is incredible and you will not be disappointed.
BEST MYSTERY goes to ODDTAXI
What more do I need to say? There are few anime that I would say are 100% Perfect. This is one of them. No detail is overlooked. No amount of character interaction is filler. Everything has a point and purpose to the great end. If you haven’t seen it already, what are you waiting for?!
BEST SHORT SERIES goes to Pui Pui Molcar
It’s a stop motion show about sentient Guinea Pig cars. Need I say more?
BEST DRAMA goes to GANKUTSUOU: The Count of Monte Christo
It’s the Count of Monte Christo. In space. With aliens and funky artwork. And it somehow works. I don’t know how better to sell it.
BEST SLICE OF LIFE goes to Yuru Camp
Cute girls do camping things and it was honestly the show I needed when I finally hit the burnout of the last 2 years.
BEST OST goes to Vivy: Fluorite Eyes Song
This soundtrack was far too good and was worth the hype alone. But paired with the animation and it was absolutely elevated.
BEST SEQUEL goes to Uma Musume Season 2
I tried so, so hard. This year had so many good sequel seasons. But the one I felt was the strongest was this one. I still stop and think about it from time to time. And its a season that stands on its own. It’s simply fantastic.
BEST COMMUNITY goes to Shirobako
Bringing back this award, this is in regards to characters and setting and how they interact. And the community of the setting of Shirobako are simply amazing to watch and I wish these people were my fellow co-workers.
BEST ONGOING goes to Ranking of Kings
I HAD TO GET THIS SHOW ON HERE SOMEHOW AND IT WILL PROBABLY MAKE MY BEST OF 2022 IF THE SEASON STICKS THE LANDING.
Best Romance goes to Science Fell in Love, so I Decided to Prove It
Two nerds who are so into science that they need to use science to prove they are in love. Shenanigans ensue. It’s too cute.
BEST FRIENDSHIP goes to Astra: Lost in Space
There were a lot of great anime I watched this year that I felt deserve this award, but without spoiling anything, the friendship between the crew of the Astra is something that I felt deserved recognition the most.
BEST FIGHT goes to Kyojuro Rengoku VS Akaza from Demon Slayer: Mugen Train Arc
I STILL GET THE FEELS OVER THIS FIGHT OKAY?!?! I WILL NEVER RECOVER FROM THIS!
BEST ISEKAI goes to Ascendance of a Bookworm
It was a close race between this and Realist Hero, but I felt that Bookworm had a more solid open ending that both allows for further story, as well as leaves a viewer satisfied in the case a new season cannot be produced. (Luckily, both are getting new seasons soon, but point still stands.)
BEST COMEDY goes to Zombieland Saga Seasons 1 and 2
Zombie. Idols. Need I say more?
BEST INSERT SONG goes to Dawn Breaks from Given
It was so, so hard to pick an insert song this year, but I felt this song had more of what I was looking for in terms of something both emotional and memorable. If you haven’t listened to it, please do.
BEST OP is a DRAW! This award goes to ODDTAXI and PRETTY BOY DETECTIVE CLUB!
Listen, these two have amazing animation and very fitting songs that perfectly encapsulate their respective shows and what to expect from them. Both are worthy of watching on their own.
BEST ED goes to BEASTARS Season 2.
The animation and the music are both just so soothing and are a welcome change of pace compared to the action and suspense of the main show and OP.
MOST UNDERRATED goes to Kemono Jihen
Horror. Mystery. Found Family. Criminally under watched. Please give it a watch.
MOST HEARTWARMING goes to The Saint’s Power is Omnipotent
This anime was just gentle. Soft. Warm. A nice romance and sweet fantasy isekai.
MOST DELICIOUS goes to Restaurant to Another World Season 2
It’s hard to watch this and not get hungry.
GUILTY PLEASURE goes to Fairy Ranmaru
I will not justify this one. It’s just pure, unapologetic, queer fun. It’s not good, but it’s not bad. It’s just fun.
MOST ADORABLE goes to My Senpai is Annoying
Look, I’m a sucker for the “Tiny-Grumpy-Human and Giant Goofy Teddy Bear” dynamic, okay? Sue me.
BEST REWATCH goes to Akudama Drive
I cannot describe how much better this show gets with every rewatch, okay? Just...give it a watch if you haven’t already.
MOST EMOTIONAL SCENE goes to Episode 1 of To Yuor Eternity
My feels...will never recover....
MOST FUN DUB goes to Sk8 The Infinity
HEY BITCHES AND BROS AND NONBINARY HOES!
This dub just gets me.
The DESERVED BETTER award goes to Way of the House Husband
If ANY anime adaptation should have gotten the One Punch Man treatment, it should have been this one. You’re better off ripping the audio from the show and placing it over manga edits. I’ve never seen an anime that made me think a premise wasn’t funny the way this one did.
MOST DISSAPOINTING is also a draw! This award goes to B: The Beginning- Succession and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou/Sotsu
With B: The Beginning, it was just disappointing. I hardly remember anything from the season. I keep waiting and waiting for a part 2, wondering if maybe there’s something I’m missing. The music was boring, the fighting wasn’t memorable. I wish they’d just either left it at one season or actually stopped to consider “is this any good?”
With Higurashi Gou/Sotsu, however, this is one that the more I think about it, the more I try to fit it into the overall narrative of Higurashi. The more I try to make sense of its themes and story, the more pissed off I get. This just feels like a giant spit in the face after being thrown into a pile of cow manure. Even if I were to take it as its own thing outside of canon, it just doesn’t make it any better. It’s not even worth it beyond the music.
And now, the ranking of:
THE TOP TEN ANIME I WATCHED IN 2021!
10) Pretty Boy Detective Club 9) Astra: Lost in Space 8) Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Christo 7) Ascendance of a Bookworm 6) Planetes 5) Kemono Jihen 4) Uma Musume Season 2 3) Sk8 The Infinity 2) To Your Eternity 1) ODDTAXI
And there you have it! My rankings for anime I watched this past year! Were there some you think I missed? Are there any you think I should give a watch? Any your favorites? Let me know!
Thank you all for taking the time to read this post and I look forward to seeing you all in 2022!

Best girl!!!!
Since i saw that Peppo had become a model in the epilogue, i wanted to draw her in a fancy dress :3
Also i tried to colour her hair and the dress the same way it was in anime, and I'm really happy with the result!

I saw this and I was like: I need to share my questionable taste in men -and women?- on the internet!!  ( @meldreemurr  what do you think of my list? xD)
Tumblr media
1- Alucard from hellsing ultimate!!😍☺️❤️ (yes, surprising! I know..)
Tumblr media
2- Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing- Hellsing Ultimate  (This woman makes me question my sexuality a least 3 times a day...)
Tumblr media
3-Dracula- Dracula (1992)  (What can I say? I loved Gary Oldman’s performance. If a man ever said to me “I have crossed oceans of time to find you” he certainly would have my heart)
Tumblr media
4- Count Dracula- Dracula (2020)  (Oooohhhh, this scene really made me see him differently xD Hope we are gonna get a second season :/)
Tumblr media
5- Gankutsuou or Edmond dantes- Gankutsuou: the count of Monte Christo (In my defence, he shares the same Japanese VA as alucard...He also has gusto xD)
Tumblr media
6-Dracula- Castlevania (At this point, the summary of this post would be: Maria simping for vampires for 5 years straight)
Tumblr media
7- Howl Jenkins Pendragon- Howl’s moving castle (Hey look!! a normal human being who isn't a mass human murderer!!)
Tumblr media
8-Hannibal Lecter- Hannibal (nbc show). (Thank god I fixed the list by adding a freaking cannibal into it xD  Again, not my fault!! I mean, look at his face!! and the fact he has the class of an aristocrat makes things worse for my poor heart)
Tumblr media
9-Johan Liebert- Monster (Not gonna lie, i think at times he can be creepier than anyone else in this list :/ But he’s also an interesting character, so that's why I got him in)

i always kind of assumed you were a fan of some sort of count of monte christo anime or something since i swear ive seen like anime looking pictures o the characters
OK SO *inhale*
theres a count of monte cristo anime its called gankutsuou but its not a very good adaptation and has weird sexual tension between monte cristo and the son of one of his enemies so i generally like to forget it exists
BUT theres also an anime boy version of the count himself in a little gacha game called fate grand order, this is the version i draw because i am also just generally into fgo and i think its a good version of him despite the fact that he looks like komaeda. i just like what they did with his character. it kind of throws away the ending of the book which is ehhh give him some hope but fate series has very extensive lore and with the lore it makes sense
also i draw other characters from the book as anime or whatever the fuck you wanna call my style because i want to draw them. i called them fateverse designs at first because i designed mercedes first (she’s mentioned but never seen in fgo) and based parts of it off of what they say about her in fgo but at this point i am just doing whatever i want its mostly just the original book + me doing what fucking ever

Reflection on Chapter One: Hercule Lecoffret
Some funny notes about the first chapter of “Master Daddy: The Last Nightborne Godfather”. I’ll try hard not to spoil you on what happens, just tease you... but no guarantees. If you absolutely don’t want to be spoiled, then definitely go read it.
Read chapter 1
Not gonna work too hard on this reflection cause I always have a ton of writing projects I’m neglecting, but I’ll sneak and jot it down while it’s fresh, and it’s actually kinda funny, and awesome! to give ya’ll an inside look into what I was thinking for Chapter 1: Hercule Lecoffret of “Master Daddy”. There’s also a little writing advice in here about first chapters, too.
First off, I want to say... Fanfaction makes me feel electric. I love writing anyway and I just cackle when I’m writing fanfiction. I do this really to practice writing and for the joy of it. It’d be nice to get some recognition as a writer but, whatever. So lemme share about how I developed this. I mentioned on my Trixany blog that the initial concept started when I re-watched a Gankutsuou clip (you’ve seen the Count of Monte Christo anime right?) and I was like ‘Okay so... that guy is a Nightborne!’
Chapter One got re-written like, a bajillion times
I did my fangirl thing, became obsessed with the idea... Then it came time to write chapter one. If you write or you’re just starting to write (a lot of us gamer-roleplayers do) you’ll see how this is true... what I started as chapter one actually became chapter three which you’ll see go live on Friday 11/27. (And then I really enjoy writing long-form so I messed with all my chapters again, breaking them into about two parts each. It was a little agonizing when I crafted them so carefully and pay attention to pacing, etc. but it had to be done.)
Influences from the My Life for My Prince series
Originally, I wanted to do something similar to what I did with another fanfiction of mine “My Life for My Prince 4: Fall of Quel’thalas”, which is to have the freedom to leap around to any character and any timeline encompassed in the plot. That was fun and I loved the flexibility, but I learned some hard lessons from that fanfic. Not that it was ‘so successful’ or anything that people really read it or told me what it was like to read it; it’s just a fanfic like I said. Um, but in writing it, and re-reading it plenty of times, I felt like it did not flow well. It didn’t flow as easily as I thought it did. (If you’re curious and new to my stuff, I write a lot of ‘Kael’thas survived Outland and he’s the king of Quel’thalas with badass Blood Knights’ alt-universe fanfiction. In the fourth story I decided to go way back in time to let you meet his mother and show how something that happened to her affected the series timeline in crazy ways.) But, thing is, if you get to a point where you think you need to explain the timeline as a guide, it’s probably not the best setup. Hey, practice makes perfect. That’s why I don’t restrain myself, I’ve learned to write as much throw-away stuff, and as much fanfiction as I like, as long as it isn’t really interfering with other projects (don’t worry, it IS) and then re-read it as much as you can to study and see if you’re really achieving your goals as a storyteller.
I forgot what I was talking about
Oh, my whole point--it went much like this... I wrote chapter one. Then I wrote another chapter one with Thalyssra and later put Lor’themar and Silgryn in it. And then I decided to make sure they were there throughout the fanfic as a result. More on that later. And then, I re-wrote chapter one yet again, to focus on the um... shower scene mainly. There used to be lot of extra text about Lor’themar arriving at the prison and stepping out of a fancy armored carriage drawn by Hawkstriders, and then he talked to the chief investigator Heron Audobon who you’ll meet much later... and then he was thinking about Thalyssra and how much he missed her, and then he had some toast (I’m joking, there was no toast but I love Futurama references), but I cut all of that out because it was taking waaaay long to get to the point. I’ll be recycling Lor’themar’s pensive walk it in Part Two. And it’ll be much different, and feel really new. You’ll like it.
So we’ll be meeting each of the main characters in a fresh way for “Master Daddy” as we go, and then I took a page from The Romancer Turaho. (This fanfic is about a Tauren detective investigating... you guessed it, Kael’thas. Actually, this is holiday-themed and I’m about to pick it back up again so you should read it if you want something funny and messed to read about Kael’thas stealing Winter’s Veil... again.) and decided to enjoy writing things first-person too. But Lucien will always be at the center, and things will progress chronologically, day-by-day in his life at the start of this ‘incident’ he’s been jailed for. And as I said, originally, chapter one was something else. It was one of Lucien’s relatives complaining about him to the authorities. And this kid truly hated his uncle which was really funny.
Advice on writing first chapters: It’s okay to do it over plenty of times, throw it out, get new ideas
What I have now, that first page you’ve read/will read? That came from backtracking and wanting to frame the story a little better. The whole point is that Lucien is in trouble for a crime, big trouble, so we make that clear up front and ‘raise the stakes’ which is another writer’s strategy. That means, add Thalyssra, and we also push that most important part, that he’s in trouble for a crime, up to the tip-top of the story. But it took a long time to figure out that an interrogation scene was how I needed to do it. And he’s a sexy guy so, even though Lucien isn’t there himself, I made sure to do something... that something turned out to be letting the jailor talk about his tattoos and fantasize about him. Usually, I just listen to my gut and eventually several small decisions about how to probably frame a story at the start add up to a brand new presentation.
I’ve read somewhere that the first three chapters of a novel should always let you know two key things. First, what is this story really about? The main conflict should be clear. Second, all those main characters need to be introduced. Maybe they don’t have to actually have to be face-right-up-in-the-camera speaking their lines at the very start... For example, Darken Rahl in Terry Goodkind’s The Sword of Truth series wasn’t sitting there at the reception watching Kahlan hate cheese, but we knew he was going to be there in the plot soon enough in the story. It’s been a while since I’ve read "Wizard’s First Rule”, one of my favorite novels, but it’s a good example of how flexible you can be with introducing main characters, as long as readers at least have a guide, a roadmap. Nothing so jarring that they feel thrown out of the story later or cheated if it turns out the main characters aren’t the main characters after all. I’m a little worried that will happen, but hopefully people are at peace with Lucien being the protagonist and Thalyssra and Lor’themar being more the muses or the chorus who usher us into this grand tale of a Nightborne villain.
What else can I say about the actual chapter one you’ve read or are about to read?
Shower scene. The um... flaming arsehole thing was something I thought about a long while and re-framed a lot before going with the way I presented it. I decided it was too compellingly gruesome an element to leave it out. It is very much the ‘bloody horsehead in the bed’ you encounter in The Godfather.
Thal’remar. I think Thalyssra was just interviewing Lucien’s jailor on her own initially but there were too many excellent connections with Lor’themar, and their romance, and also it occurred to me that he had experienced a rough imprisonment situation so that fit perfectly. Funny thing about that too--I had put this draft together with them ‘dating’ and at this interview because I was aware that the Warcraft fandom shipping them. And then Blizzard put an actual story on their website about them and I was just so pleased!
Silgryn!! Having Silgryn in there as well made me fangirl squeak every time I got to let him say something. Other than quest dialogue we don’t have a lot so I’m going to imagine some consistent character traits for him so he’s consistent, and feels real, breathing, in the fanfic. My favorite part with him in it was him... wait, his heroic comeback is in chapter 2. I won’t spoil that for you.
Goofy mystery story names. In the tradition of other mystery stories out there, some of the character names are ironic. Lecoffret means “coffin” in french I believe. Hercule, Hercules, giant dude... giant coffin? You can see what I felt needed to happen to that guy for how he ran Nighthold, Cell Block E. I also had Hercule Poirot on the brain since it was an investigation, and, well, as Hercule Poirot will tell you, he’s not French, he’s Belgian--but that came into it as well.
What’s up next?
See how the valiant Thalyssra handles Lecroffret and then how Lor’themar encourages her to handle the man himself, named for a saber’s sly grin. Whatever crime Lucien committed to get thrown in prison in the first place, I’m not sure if Thalyssra will ever let him get away with it.
