Remembering that rex is a manipulative little shit and here to remind myself of that fact again. He did very much

goad Biowulf for an entire episode the second he caught onto the fact there was blood in the water, pinpointing his sore spots to the extent that within a couple of hours, Biowulf—VK’s most loyal right-hand man—was willing to betray his ‘master’, go against their mission and help Rex and Circe escape all because Rex made him doubt his position in the pack

Do that bait and switch with No-face for the data stick, plus another bluff with gatlocke re: the bomb

That alliance episode again where he was outright guilt-tripping circe during the fight with no face. That little bastard was perfectly fine but he was swooning like a trained victorian lady. Don’t forget this incident is literally a direct contributing factor to Circe finally leaving the pack so it actually worked

That one episode with Annie and Claire where rex was doing all sorts of over-engineering to get Noah some. Like it’s not a real genius idea perse. But it’s definitely manipulative.

When he fear-mongered breach into giving circe back without a fight and getting rid of quarry in one fell swoop. Like he didn’t just make the trade, this guy planned for this. He built up to it. He had the recording on hand, he was all like “uh oh, VK’s hard on failure right uwu”. Wanna save your skin? Better cut a deal with me. And he didn’t even give up the recording in the end, which means he still had blackmail on breach after the trade

Making the deal with nightshade aka jungle cat. half of it is because he’s a good person probably and didn’t actually want to have to kill an EVO without looking for an alternative, but also he pressed the exact right buttons. He wasn’t like “it’s for the good of humanity and revenge is bad”. It was literally just “here’s something we can do for you and here’s something you can do for us. Kill Van Kleiss? Bitch, what do you think I’ve been trying to do”

Mentioning Alliance again bc Rex was just a scheming little gremlin bastard for that ENTIRE EPISODE.

Enemies mine when he tricked his entire rogues gallery into trapping themselves. he knew they had a tracker on him and immediately was like. Ya know what.

HK rex gets an honorary mention for being a bigger red flag gremlin off screen than our rex could ever be

the characters of Generator Rex as living symbols

Something interesting that's been bouncing around my head for years is the inherent symbolism of several of the characters in Generator Rex.

Van Kleiss is transhumanism; the philosophy that humanity can and should be changed into something new through technology. in other words, he is the idea that humans should abandon their humanity to become gods, at any cost. he's brilliant, but menacing, and everywhere he goes unsettling change follows. he commands nature, enslaves time and space, and nearly becomes what he seeks to be, but he leaves suffering and misery in his wake.

White Knight is the inverse of this, a reactionary fear of change. he sits alone in his sterile room to insulate himself from change. he is the last vestige of the old order, the last memory of humanity before the event. he may be a "good guy", but in the first 2 seasons he's a nasty old bastard all the same. ultimately his efforts preserve humanity, but also hold it back from truly growing.

Black Knight is something of a synthesis of Van Kleiss and White Knight. She is a symbol of the old order, but specifically the part of the old order which brought about the new order. she is power hungry but calculating and manipulative, and willing to crush others under her heel if it allows her to get what she wants. she is in many ways similar to a bureaucrat, ceo, politician, or career military officer, or some kind of combination of the most dangerous and callous elements of all four.

Caesar Salazar represents science, in all it's glory, and all it's horror. He is capable of creating devices which can entertain and make life easier for others, and to solve problems which everyone else is unable to solve. but he also creates weapons of terrifying power, and has a knack for inventing things that nearly end the world by accident, over and over again.

So where does that leave Rex? well, that's simple. Rex is the living manifestation of all the positive aspects of science and technology, all of the potential of humanity's mind and spirit. He heals the sick and defends those who cannot defend themselves. he builds, he fixes, he creates wonders. he is a living miracle. in many ways he represents humanity at it's very best, even with his disdain for authority and difficulty following directions.

of course characters like no-face, hunter cain, quarry, and gatlock are also living symbols, but I don't feel like typing all day. if anyone wants to pick up where I left off through reblogs, feel free.

Also idk about anyone else but Leliana tanked the Inquisition. She completely failed as a spymaster she never knew anything, her ppl did no background checks on anyone like the Kirkwall elves who smuggled the gatlock into Orleis, Solas AND the Qunari had spies in the Inquisition she had no idea about Blackwall, we would have been better off with Varric.

TEETH: A Roleplaying Game

TEETH DAY TEETH DAY TEETH DAY. I've only had time to flip through for like half an hour, but my first impressions are that Jim Rossingol and Marsh Davies have made something 1: Extremely creepy and weird 2: Surprisingly funny 3: Extremely cohesive in both look and writing style.

It's a Forged in the Dark game about hunting for monsters in 1780, in the fictional The Vale of Deluth, an area in the wild windswept north of England where magic lingers and bubbles and growls through bared teeth in the darkness. I've not played or read it through in detail yet, but the vibes are incredibly strong here, so that's what I'm gonna dive in on below the cut.

I love a map and this game has several, including these two incredibly cool looking maps of The Vale and the main town of Gatlock:

First of all, the writing in this game is just *really good*. This is the description of the main town of Gatlock, I can smell the crusty wigs and the stinking, stagnant canal from here.

It's really creatively, uniquely gruesome and foreboding. Every paragraph contains some squirm-inducing twist that the magical nature of the vale has inflicted on the place and the people who live around it.

It's not grimdark though, for everything that makes you cringe and shiver there's something to make you laugh. This mutations table is full of horrors, but also some of the horrors are just really funny:

And the artwork! Look at these nasty English bastards! The intricate woodcut style looks so good and really compliments the writing so well. It feels super singular in its intent - dark, nasty, funny.

There's a D12 table of cursed pies that's singularly grimy and gross but also just really fucking funny and I want to incorporate it into every game. You roll for appearance, filling, curse and antidote

Like, I return from the moors, bloodied and bruised after a harrowing hunt where I narrowly defeat a gang of monstrosities, and my reward is getting bullied by children because I ate the wrong pie? That's fucking great.

Eventually I'll learn how the actual game works, but at the moment I'm so into the vibes that all I wanna do is flip through and marvel at them. It's a sticky, black bog that will slowly drown you, but occasionally it makes a farting noise and you can't help but laugh.

I'll post more once I've had a proper readthrough, but I'm just super enamored with this game on its face, and you should absolutely check it out. There's TEETH the full game, but there's also a bunch of introductory adventures written to get a taste of it, and seem like a perfect way to onboard people who've not played TTRPGs before, all of which are on itch
