2023-2024 Broadway Season Ranked
Tumblr media
I saw every new show that opened on Broadway in the 2023-2024 season. Once more, perfectly normal and not at all cost-prohibitive. Compared to seasons' past, this one was plentiful in new musicals and utterly bereft of quality. Usually I have at least four shows that rewire my entire circuitry, but not this time.
Do you have strong opinions on any of these new shows? Are you filled with unstoppable rage at this list? Do you agree wholeheartedly? Discuss.

I saw 10 of the new shows this year (3 Revivals and 7 New Musicals). So I decided to rate and rank them:
1 - Suffs 10/10 - What an incredible show! Such a talented cast and I want the soundtrack immediately! I had tears streaming down my face at the end of both acts. Shaina Taub and Hannah Cruz are particularly great. And Grace McLean as Pres Wilson is hilarious. The set is excellently done to evoke the locales and move things along. Strong direction all the way. My pick for Best Musical.
Tumblr media
2 - Water For Elephants 9.5/10 - amazing cast; should get an award for ensemble; nice use of puppets - Rosie reveal was perfect. Grant was incredible as was August. Went up in rank as the week went on because the music really stuck with me and I wanted to hear it again.
Tumblr media
3 - Outsiders 9//10 - loved the choreo. Ponyboy is great. The gravel stage and flashlights were particularly effective. Best lighting design and use of rain
Tumblr media
4 - Merrily We Roll Along 8.5/10 - was slightly concerned by Groff’s flat affect in first scene until it became clear it was a choice as he became more vibrant as time moved back. Daniel was perfect and the friendship between the 3 leads really came through. His Franklin Shepherd Inc is worth the Tony on its own. I can only assume I was supposed to hate Gussie because I totally did.
Tumblr media
5 - Cabaret 8/10 - confession: I had never seen Cabaret in any form and I didn’t research the plot so I had no idea what was happening between the KitKat numbers. Really good production- excellent staging, never felt left out in the round. Eddie Redmayne was creepily intriguing. Sally seemed more broken than I would have thought from hearing songs from previous productions. Dark and moody; not a huge fan of the immersive preshow. No program pic bc they covered all phone cameras with stickers on the way in (before giving us a shot of really bad schnapps)
Tumblr media
6 - The Wiz 8/10 - bright and fun! Excellent performances especially the 4 leads. LOVE the Lion. Costumes are gorgeous and the dancing is fabulous. Does Wayne Brady have to be there the whole show since he’s not on til Act 2?
Tumblr media
7 - Gatsby 8/10 - bubbly and fun; loved the opulence of set & costumes; great dancing and some really good songs; loved Jeremy Jordan’s Gatsby - the insecurities coming through the glam
Tumblr media
8 - Notebook 7.5/10 - Heartbreaking performance by Old Allie especially. What is with that water on stage this year?
Tumblr media
9 - Hells Kitchen 7/10 - great dancing. Lead actress was great but maybe im too old to identify with her instead of her mother. Again with death of a supporting character.
Tumblr media
10 - Back To The Future 7/10 - Roger Bart is hilarious - definitely the reason to see the show. Set was actually a little underwhelming - too much reliance on projections. Some fun numbers but no real standouts.
Tumblr media
Overall: no shows I disliked this time. VERY strong season. Some really creative use/resuses of minimalistic elements this season. Other season trends: full size cars and actual rain. And death - so much death

So I've seen 6 shows this year so far, which I think is a pretty good amount for May. And when I saw Gutenberg I was like "I'm gonna keep a list of them and rank them every time I see them" and I just don't have a list atm. So I've gonna make one now
6. The Great Gatsby
Pretty alright, costumes were good, actors were good, I liked some of the songs although none were really too memorable. I went for Eva and Jordan, Jordan and Eva was pretty good but Sam stole the show for me. Jordan Baker I'd marry you and treat you right <3
5. The Play that Goes Wrong
Funniest shit, I'm not as into physical comedy too much but the gags were great, I loved them so much
4. Wicked
Very excited for the movie, I love the show to death. I'd seen it previously but we wanted to take my sister because she hadn't. I forgot how freaking huge that theater was, like WOW it's huge
3. Little Shop of Horrors
I SAW IT WITH DARREN!!! It was so great it was my first time seeing lsoh in general, I had a great time with it. Dentist how I love you, I'd let him be my dentist
2. The Notebook
I absolutely adore this show, the music is pretty great (I wish they didn't all sorta sound the same) the set was great, the acting was amazing as always and I nearly cried multiple times. Young Allie my beloved, I wish Jordan Tyson a good day.
Gutenberg the musical
I'm still in love with this show, it was so much fun and the cast recording is great. Doug and Bud my beloved <3

currently trying to listen to all the cast albums from nominated shows ahead of the tonys and i figured i would make a post of how it’s going!
so far:
days of wine and roses (re-listen): gorgeous. adam guettel + kelli o’hara + brian d’arcy james are an undeniable combination.
suffs (first listen): kind of repetitive and i was honestly a bit bored. it’s not bad, it just isn’t that interesting to me? there are a couple songs i like but they mostly sound the same.
merrily we roll along (re-listen): perfect. 10/10. no notes. <3
the outsiders (first listen): definitely a pleasant/enjoyable listen. it’s not life-changing but i liked it.
illinoise (first listen): i mean, it's a jukebox. it's fine. but like i'm not convinced any of these songs are better than the original versions?
the notebook (first listen): genuinely enjoyed this! kind of falls into the same category as the outsiders: i liked it, but it didn't blow my mind.
hell's kitchen (first listen): some of the songs were good, but like, those songs were already good as alicia keys songs. this didn't do all that much for me.
water for elephants (first listen): it took me 3 tries to get through this.
here lies love (first listen): feels impossible to separate this one from the controversy (both re: subject matter and musicians) but it was... also meh. the titular song is definitely catchy but i don't have much else to say.
stereophonic (re-listen): probably the best score of the season. it is just SO good. no notes.
to listen:
gutenberg! the musical!
lempicka
back to the future i probably won't listen to this
cabaret (london version if i have time)
gatsby (maybe. if i feel like it)

Hi! This is part 2. Wow I just watched the video of him singing since I had a chance and was pretty impressed. His voice was low and Stars is such a hard song to sing so I guess I'm not worried anymore, that he can't pull off the role because of singing. We will see how it goes but hopefully I can watch the proshot of Merrily first lol.
Speaking of pro shots, I also heard about the Bonnie and Clyde one and would love to watch Jeremy in that so hopefully I will at some point but I'm not sure when. Like I'm worried If I rent it, my sister and I won't have time to watch or she will be tired idk. I also don't know whatever happened to the Waitress one either. Btw, for your vibes, my instinct was to go with Les Mis cuz it reminds me of you. Not just because of your name either, but because how much you love it..but your vibes also match with Waitress too! It just makes sense.
Anyway I was able to find an Aaron Sweeney bootleg and a Jeremy Little Shop one so maybe I will watch them this week. After some digging, I guess it's alright or easy to find but I was more interested in ones currently still on Broadway and I'm not sure they will be available yet. However there might be a Gatsby video out there since I think I saw it giffed. I didn't have a chance to watch the Lempicka one yet either or listen to the Gatsby cast album yet, but I'm listening later today and will share my thoughts. Also I just found a copy of the book the other day so maybe I will finally read it! I need to get back into reading again as a better distraction haha. Instead I listened to The Notebook, Illinoise and Water For Elephants. Suffs is fine..I listened to it twice and it has some catchy songs but wasn't into the story or anything and found it slightly hard to follow, but it was also the only original musical the season so I guess that's something. I don't really have too many thoughts about it but people always like different things. Like I love the Outsiders based on the story and music but I know a lot of people absolutely hate it for winning best musical. I would hope you would like it but if you didnt, that's also okay. I think what I loved about the Notebook and The Outsiders is that they feel almost totally separate from the movie to me now, in a good way. Like I love both, and I was using the movie to follow the story listening to the songs, but i wasn't like..this is exactly like the movie..they truly offered something a little different and the songs matched the stories. What are your favorite songs from the Notebook? Also, what did you think of the casting choices and how the parts were swapped with their races with the old couple? At first my sister and I were confused but then they said that was the point. Also are you an Ingrid Michaelson fan? I found out she has an album coming out next month too. If you wanna share more about what watching the show is like, with the rain scene maybe, I would love that too!
I am not as familiar with the Water for Elephants movie..but listening almost made me wanna watch it again to see if it was similar or different. I only watched it once so I couldn't really remember much about it. I'm a fan of Izzy Mccalla, Grant Gustin and Paul Alexander Nolan so I enjoyed it. I'd say it did have parts of a more Broadway sound with some of the circus stuff and in general talk singing dialogue in the show. My sister and I noticed that 3 and a half shows had to do with an affair from the women being taken and we thought that was funny. The Notebook, Gatsby and Water for Elephants lol. Anyway you might like it if you wanna give it a listen. I liked Illinoise but also couldn't get much of the story and it felt like listening or imitating Sufjan so I'm sure it's better to watch since I couldn't get much of the story. Hell's Kitchen I was able to follow some or most of the story and am a fan of the singing and performers too, like Shoshana Bean so it's maybe worth a listen. We also said how there was a mix of stories that were teen and adult, and also a lot they were looking back on the past. That could be cuz a lot of them are based on books though lol.
Omg of course I've watched the Spring Awakening bootleg haha. Sometimes I just pick a few songs to listen to, that's why instead of the whole thing or watching but I love it so much! I love that there's nothing else quite like it. I think the only thing I really compare it to is like Next to Normal, and that could be biased. One because of Aaron and Jonathan who are similar performers to me, and two because these were the first musicals I learned about that werent based on anything and also the first bootlegs I watched lol. I think a performance of the show would be so cool so i'm sorry you didn't like the show! What was so wrong with it if you don't mind saying?
Also happy anniversary to Speak Now TV! I might be a day late but still. How does the album hold up for you and what's your opinion of the vault songs? Idk if we ever talked about it. I haven't really been into Taylor as much but I forgot to mention that she sang Castles Crumbling with Hayley Williams about a week ago and it made me nostalgic for my show. Hayley Williams also posted about it being 1 year and Taylor didn't lol. She also sang Mary's Song! But too bad it was only part of it. I haven't been guessing surprise songs as much but I actually guessed that she would sing a song from debut and mash it up with a song from Red..which was right, but just the wrong songs lol. She also sang a I Can See You and Mine mashup which actually sound a bit similar in the beginning of the songs. It's too bad she already played it instead of doing something to celebrate it. I'm guessing she will be singing Last Kiss tomorrow cuz of July 9th and i am putting it here so I can be right for once! Idk if it will be on guitar or piano cuz it could go either way. I also think she might sing the whole song instead of mashing it up..and maybe she will sing Timeless again since she seems to be in a romantic mood. I just noticed they sort of rhyme so they could be almost mashed up lol but I think that's all I'm gonna guess for now haha. I hope I'm right! I haven't got around to listening to those albums yet but I will next week. I am spending another week on Broadway stuff with Gatsby, a musical cast album called The Violet Hour that Jeremy and other Broadway people sing on, and possibly Lempicka after I watch it this weekend. That also reminds me I need to watch Hazbin Hotel too, which he is a part of. I usually only listen to three ish albums a week so ya. What have you been listening to? Sorry this got kinda long again too but I hope you have an awesome week!!! I hope you enjoy my long messages but you can always take time replying. I guess I missed talking to you! 🩷
🩷 i'm so sorry for the awkward delay in replying! my friend showed up early to get me for the basketball game we went to tonight </3 although honestly... if i hadn't been distracted (buying oh mary tickets) i definitely would've had time to answer the rest of this ask before i left. in the time it took for me to answer that last ask and start answering this one i bought tickets to see the thursday oh mary 5pm matinee. bailey loves me and is putting up with me and my nonsense. i also have a packed schedule now. oh well!
i was also impressed when i heard him sing! i was like oh! okay! i am really, really excited for the merrily proshot and i hope it does not take years for it to be released. but at least it's been filmed!
i haven't gotten around to watching it yet but i do need to! loveeee bonnie & clyde! i was listening to the west end cast recording earlier! you could always wait to rent until you know you have time! i did laugh about the les mis thing; i was definitely expecting it to win and was pleasantly surprised when waitress won! waitress is one of my favorites though (obviously) so i am quite pleased with that result.
a lot of the songs on the notebook took a while to grow on me! my days is obviously a favorite, so is iron in the fridge, but there are just so many that really get to me (i always cry when i listen to it). i think it was a bit odd! i remember being like ?????? when i saw it and also when i heard the casting announcement and a lot of the audience was like ??????? but! they are all such good actors. and i am! i love ingrid michaelson's music! the chain is one of my favorite songs of all time. very excited for her album! oh gosh the rain scene is done SO well!! i will elaborate on this after i've seen it again but i remember being SO impressed with it!
i will give water for elephants a listen soon! my friend saw it and liked it but didn't love it :( i think the big sell of illinoise is that it's dance heavy ( i heard it's more like vignettes rather than a cohesive plot of a show ) so i really hope we get a bootleg and that it tours someday!
oh gosh there was so much that went wrong with the production i saw! i have a lot of ... thoughts on that theatre and their artistic direction. i love love loved the revival, and i think the direction + staging + double casting added a lot of complexity to the show. and so i think seeing anything after that would've been a disappointment, but i think my mediocre show experience was really down to two things: 1) a bad show + 2) a bad audience. i think shows do themselves a disservice when they treat their audience like they're stupid. everyone knows that the songs in spring awakening are about ... what they're about. we do not need it spelt out for us. the set didn't do it any favors (it was very bare/minimal — wooden chairs, some trees, and two big rocks that the actors kept tripping over). the casket in the left behind scene was a chair and it was very ... odd. the costumes weren't very great, but the one thing i will not understand is the choice to put wendla and moritz in grim reaper sims-esque outfits (i get why i just think they were very off putting and also jarring in comparison to everything else). a lot of the reviews said the wendla and moritz were terrible; we had an understudy moritz (who admittedly also wasn't great) but i really don't think the wendla was bad at all — she just didn't come off as naive/innocent as i feel like wendla starts off being, but she wasn't like that terrible. the moritz and martha were the saving grace of this show; very clearly talented, out-acted and out-sung everyone else. just very, very good in a very, very mediocre production of spring awakening. a lot of the actors chose (or were told to?) riff as much as they could, which ... well could is a stretch, but also spring awakening is not a show you riff through. and audience etiquette was just absolutely horrid, like why are you laughing at the most inappropriate scenes? why are you hooting and hollering like it's a sports game? it was just ... so deeply terrible. i hate to say it but i understand why one of our local reviewers called it a two dimensional one note show.
happy (incredibly belated) speak now taylor's version anniversary to you too! i haven't actually listened to taylor much lately, but i think the album holds up fine and my favorite vault songs from it still haven't changed (foolish one, castles crumbling, timeless). i still think red has the best vault, and then i would say fearless, then speak now, then 1989. what about you? i really wish she had sung mary's song in full :/ same with a place in this world. i think the mashups are a fun concept, but i don't think i like them all that much — i'd rather hear the songs in full, and i think sometimes they're mashups just for the sake of having a mashup vs. something that has a clear theme + is thought out. if you could hear her do any two mashups (one on piano, and one on guitar), what would you choose?
i haven't really been listening to a whole lot! i listened to the new clairo album today and loved it (i love clairo, so i wasn't shocked that i loved it), and have still been mostly looping brat! aside from that i haven't really been listening to much!
i love your long messages! i always love chatting with you, even if it takes me a while to reply — i usually do read your messages at they come in and then it takes me a while to reply over time but i love it! speaking of, did you know our one year anniversary is coming up? july 14th!! i can't believe we've been chatting for almost a YEAR! happy one year, my friend! 🤍 i hope you're having a good july so far! any fun plans for your weekend or week? sending love!

When the Tony's get announced look for "Lempicka" to get more than a few nominations! In what is one of the best Broadway shows I have seen this spring, the musical has a little something for everyone at the Longacre Theatre. At times the show has a little glam, at times it is Bohemian, and at all times it is fast moving with a very good plot. As Tamara De Lempicka Eden Espinosa is flawless in her role; she commands the stage with her deft acting and singing.
Billed as a modern musical we immediately feel its effects with the brilliant modern set by Riccardo Hernandez, the erector set raw iron painted in black is both efficient and useful. Capturing the mood brilliantly is the lighting backstopped by Bradley King. Right in tune with the mood of this behemoth musical, King is magnificent with the choice of colors and how they set against the backdrop. Director Rachel Chavkin is keen on the different periods here, from the revolutionary war in Russia, the Bohemian lifestyle in Paris, the emotions between De Lempicka, her husband, her lover keeps it interesting in this two hour- fifteen minute gem!
Carson Kreitzer gives us the original concept as well as the book and lyrics. Matt Gould( book and music). The music is so complementary toward the story that it becomes deeply embedded in the plot.As the show touches on some very deep and disturbing issues, the audience is never drawn to deep into its macabre issues; rather, it is given to us in a skin surface way. Focusing more on the seedy part of Paris and the outcasts of society, one that Tamara embarrassed and her husband Tadeusz (Andrew Samonsky) hated.Whereas he came from royalty, Tamara was the daughter of a merchant Jew in Poland. When the revolution hits it is Tamara who scrubs floors to make ends meat in Paris. When she becomes a celebrated artist it is then that her husband begins to look for work.
As the show moves forward both Amber Iman as Rafaela and George Abud as Marinetti bring depth and edginess to this musical. Both believable and exquisite the two actors command their roles; they sing and dance to perfection. Raja Feather Kelly in the choreography here is simple but elegant. The same can be said for Paloma Young's costumes. Both Kelly and Young add supportable additions here but never too overstated.
"Lempicka" ebbs and flows with a wonderful nuance to the plot; it is a comfortable musical that deals with raw subject matter. Running the gamete of emotion, both the stars, the supporting cast as well as the ensemble casting bring us back in time to a period that is unsettled, where people do what they have to do to survive. It is a time through the early 20's till the mid 1970's when homosexuals, gypsy's and Jews had to keep out of sight or risk imprisonment, or death. As it is brilliantly directed and choreographed, it is highly recommended!
.......................................................................................................................
Next up is Suffs and Uncle Vanya. So far the spring season for the most part has been great! Starting with Doubt was better than expected; Water For Elephants was sensational; Enemy of The People was very good; the surprise so far was off Broadway with The Sign of The Times. Disappointing was Days of Wine And Roses, The Notebook, Tommy (not as good as in the 1990's), Cabaret (was to fluffy).
Looking towards Heart of Rock and Roll, Great Gatsby, Hells Kitchen and Home latter this season.
NY Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, Fox News, www.broadwayworld.com, www.solar wind.org, Nimbus Magazine, Broadway Bob, Vocal Media, Broadway, Hamilton, The Lion King, Aladdin, Harry Potter, Cabaret, The Wiz, Tommy, Suffs, Outsiders, Hells Kitchen, Heart of Rock and Roll.

My Beloved Mattel Hot Tires Racing Track
These terms became a nationwide catch phrase in the mid 1980's as well as catapulted the Wendy's hamburger chain into the limelight as a primary gamer in junk food sales. Locate an automotive reconditioning store that can get your lorry looking its best for you in no time at all today! I know neighboring an outlet is Purpose Vital, yet if you have a notebook, a drink, as well as a treat, you can easily work that along with only one regulation-sized coffee shop desk. The very first thing you must consider when aiming to develop a name for your vehicle garage is to become artistic. When you are going to look around along with Vrbo Internet site, looking to spare cash the next opportunity. Fascinated through this book and also suff cavern which resembled this concerned the tale of Aladdin, psorilax waar te koop or at the final on earth from Harry Potter, I carried on into the final room from the store and also was imitatly struck by passion prima facie for a shadow was pivoted like a big flatterer mushroom and also settled into a tall lean brass post belonging to the Wonderful Gatsby period from jazz and also Charleston which I so like. Having said that, exactly how males and females purchase guys's clothing interests me and also listed here's my tale. That's true, the boring moods as well as limited choices in work closet can become tedious to buy, but when you are actually investing a forty hour full week at the workplace, you need to own clothes for organisation. Exploring distributors may be the greatest approach for this kind of benefit, unless you possess certain talent to develop your own items that will certainly create your shop attract attention. Swiss tourism authorities said this regretted the happening as well as the manager of the Tom Ford specialty shop, luxurious shop operator Trois Pommes, refuted racial discrimination, saying that was a false impression. Therefore for all those trip distress, provide the shop a browse through and also you'll discover the most effective traveling trailers to buy Timmins, Ontario. Another cause that transportability is an excellent perk of outlet heating systems is actually that lp store heaters could also be actually had outdoors or even on the jobsite. Store Appeal - The Outlet Appeal Segment is the equivalent of a physical outlet home window. Observe Chelloug, a kitchen area associate, informed Reuters he was actually leaving of a store and also saw a male leave a cars and truck and fire with a rifle on a policeman. Upon investment from Sport Pro Store Dive Rope you are going to additionally obtain a travel bag, makings this extremely mobile and conveniently held anywhere you prefer to bypass rope. If you need to have a kidney transplant, as an example, you are actually certainly not going to look around and bargain over price. As that was dark and still clouded, and also as the shop was actually blinded besides due to the wall from Lincoln's Lodge, obstructing the illumination within a number of backyards, we need to not have observed so much but also for a lighted lantern that an old man in eyeglasses and also an unshaven hat was carrying around in the store.

November 18, 2024
Casting has been revealed for Kennedy Center's upcoming world premiere stage version of Apple TV's Schmigadoon!, set to take the Washington, D.C. theatre's Eisenhower Theater January 31-February 9, 2025. Ann Harada will reprise her performance as Florence Menlove, joined by newcomers Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice) as Josh Skinner, Sara Chase (The Great Gatsby) as Melissa Gimble, Kevin Del Aguila (Some Like It Hot) as Reverend Layton, McKenzie Kurtz (Wicked) as Betsy McDonough, Isabelle McCalla (Water for Elephants) as Emma Tate, Javier Muñoz (Hamilton) as Doc Lopez, Brad Oscar (Something Rotten!) as Mayor Menlove, Emily Skinner (Suffs) as Mildred Layton, and Ryan Vasquez (The Notebook) as Danny Bailey. Casting is by The Telsey Office. Christopher Gattelli, who choreographed both seasons of the series, will direct and choreograph the stage version, which will feature a book, music, and lyrics by series creator Cinco Paul. Press notes indicate audiences can expect songs from the series' Grammy-nominated score plus new tunes. David Chase is serving as music supervisor, with orchestrations by Doug Besterman and music direction by Steven Malone. The musical will follow the plot of the show's first season, which saw a couple, struggling to save their relationship, who suddenly find themselves in Schmigadoon, a magical world populated with characters, plots, songs, and dance numbers inspired by Golden Age musicals like Oklahoma!, The Music Man, and Carousel. The production is being presented by special arrangement with Lorne Michaels' Broadway Video, which produced the series. The series premiered on Apple TV+ in 2021, with a second season in 2023 that sent its characters to Schmicago, complete with parodies of '70s musicals like Pippin, Godspell, and Sweeney Todd. Read Playbill's exhaustive recaps of all first and second season episodes for a deep dive into the series' many musical theatre Easter eggs, references, and parodies. The upcoming production will also include scenic design by Scott Pask, lighting design by Jen Schriever, and sound design by Haley Parcher. Tickets are available at Kennedy-Center.org.
