Among the multitude of amazing talks at GDC 2024 , one of my faves is a talk by Jordan Magnuson about how poetry can help designers make better games. It was incredibly insightful, so I wrote up some of the lessons I took away from his talk.

GDC 2024: What's New in Game History!

Hey, my GDC panel is up, and it's free! Watch me, historian Laine Nooney, Stanford curator Henry Lowood, tech policy lawyer Kendra Albert, and Chloe Appleby from the Powerhouse Museum talk about what's been happening in the field of game history.

We cover a lot of ground in an hour. This is a great way to get up to speed on what's been happening with game history/preservation, the challenges we're facing, and where we see things going in the next year. And yes, we talk about Yuzu.

(If my line "Today's piracy tools are tomorrow's preservation tools" ends up getting quoted, I won't be mad.)

A Return From The Grave

I am admittedly new to this whole... post regularly thing. So I dropped off for a while. But a LOT has happened.

I released my first game in a game jam!

Waker0 and myself put this together over about a week for GB Jam 11 back in October. It was a lot of fun and sure, it's on the shorter side, but I got to play with a lot of aspects I hadn't before like game art and animation.

I also completed some coursework at the local community college in Game Design. Learned a bit from that, but I've also been learning a ton from other folks in the industry who are kind enough to help out the new folks despite the horrible layoffs we've been seeing.

On the job front, I still don't have one of those. It's a tough market and there's a lot of very talented people out there who have been doing this longer than I have. I had the opportunity to meet with quite a few of the at San Francisco's Game Developer Conference a few weeks ago.

I do have an exciting announcement coming up here in a week or two, so stay posted for that, but in the meantime I'm glad to be back and I'll see y'all real soon.

The working title of the Baldur's Gate 3 project is Gustav. Named after Swen's dog. Anyone who has ever dug into the game files has probably seen "Gustav.pak" file. And it seems that Tav's name also refers to original game title. Unfortunately, Swen's beloved dog has passed away.

Let's Hear It for the 2024 Indie Games Festival (IGF) Finalists!

How's your 2024 been thus far? It might only be little under two weeks old by the time this article is published, but eh, it's still a new year. Which means new possibilities, and above all else, new indie games! Oh, and another round of Indie Games Festival (IGF) finalists. Quite a few fun ones amongst this lot, like A Highland Song, 1000xRESIST, and of course, COCOON. A varied bunch too, which is always nice. And groovy. Very groovy.
