I've been checking out Japanese translations of Helluva Boss, and it's fascinating how different they can be. It makes sense, because English and Japanese are completely different languages, with very different structures, and from very different cultures with different humor styles. As I see it, English-language humor relies heavily on wording, turns of phrase, puns, sarcasm, while Japanese humor seems to be more about situations, intonation... So it's amazing how different translators will try to adapt all the jokes, even though a lot of them will inevitably get lost in translation. It really makes me wonder how much of the humor in Japanese media gets lost even at the hands of the most skilled and experienced translators.

It's just such a hard job to keep a show like Helluva Boss funny and interesting while trying not to stray too far from the original meaning or insert too much of your own interpretation. As a translator myself, if I must choose between faithful word-for-word translation or localization that focuses on meaning and intention behind words, I definitely prefer the latter. So it kind of bothers me when I see Japanese translations that are too literal, 'cause I feel like they're boring at best and downright nonsensical at worst. But even a poor translation is better than no translation at all, so if they can still take the point across and allow other fans to enjoy the show, I'm grateful for them.

There are still some translations I have to check out, but so far, my favorite is this one. Maybe it's because it's not subtitles (which always imposes certain constraints), but I love how fluid and natural it sounds while still being funny and true to the original, even adding some Japanese-only puns here and there. It's brilliant. I wish they would translate the rest of the series in this style. :D

Saw your tags on the Ahsoka post about her head and what the white part is. Apologies if someone has already explained it to you. The two tails in the front and the one at the back are called lekku. The two cones at the top of the head are called montrals. The lekku, from what I know, don’t really serve a purpose. If injured, they won’t grow back, but someone wouldn’t die either. The montrals, on the other hand, are organs that help in sensing the environment. They are hollow and I believe it works a little like echolocation.

Bathydevius caudactylus swims slowly through the midnight zone, an expansive environment of open water 1,000 to 4,000 meters (3,300 to 13,100 feet) below the surface. Most nudibranchs we know of live on the seafloor. They are common in coastal environments, including tide pools, kelp forests, and coral reefs. A small number of species are known to live on the abyssal seafloor. A few are pelagic and live in open waters near the surface.

While most sea slugs use a raspy tongue to feed on prey attached to the seafloor, the mystery mollusc uses a cavernous hood to trap prey like a Venus fly trap plant. Crustaceans are on the menu for Bathydevius caudactylus, though we are still not quite sure how such a slow swimmer catches such speedy prey.

If threatened, Bathydevius caudactylus can light up with bioluminescence. On one occasion, we observed a mystery mollusc illuminate and then detach a glowing finger-like projection from the tail, much like a lizard dropping its tail as a decoy to distract predators.

Bathydevius caudactylus is typically spotted swimming or floating in the water column, but descends to the seafloor to reproduce. We have observed several spawning individuals attached to the muddy seafloor with their muscular foot.

BUT…you did find the boys to be pretty amusing. They were weird—VERY weird. And to be honest they looked pretty fucking pathetic. From that point on, you stuck alongside them. You didn’t participate really in the meetings, only there because you had nothing else to do. The only issue you had was how they fought a bunch, it was so nerve wracking. Everyday they fought about something a bunch of geeks like themselves would and you got tired of it. So, you being yourself decided to sprinkle in your own chaotic—just to mess around with them.

You’d treat them like pets, but also kinda like your friends. You’d call them out of their name, saying something rude about them or to them, just to see how they’d react. Also, you may or may have not made them buy you some more accessories or clothes for your gothic style. Whenever you take trips to the mall, you’d drag them along with you, not listening to complaints as you make them follow you everywhere. Like I said, you have them wrapped around your finger! You’d could tell them to do anything and they’ll do it.

Bill, he won’t let it slide. Or, at least the first few times. He would cuss at you and say something misogynistic about you but it’ll go out one ear and out the other. Once you see how you got under his skin much to your satisfaction, you’d ease it up a bit by teasing him, telling him that you meant nothing of it and how he needed to relax, your voice was cunning—but also smooth and hypnotic.

Pete? Oh. He don’t give a fuck. A fine goth girl was talking about him so why would he care? He’d thank you because woah??? (I am so sorry) He doesn’t mind the name calling because who wouldn’t want to be called out of their name by a pretty girl like you?

Jerry and Josh were still paranoid of you. So whenever you called them out of their name they would stay quiet because they don’t want to “set you off”. Like Jerry lowkey was thinking that if he ever were to get out of line with you, you would put an evil curse on him. He’s been involving himself into too many fantasy junk apparently because deep down, you don’t mean it in a rude way.

You have a strange personality, you’ll admit. But it’s never out of you being an ass about it. It’s hard to explain because so many people would take your words as rude. To you, they are just some small compliments that only someone like you could pull off. To be fair, you liked having people who didn’t really fit the social norms. You’d like people who stood out and knew that they did stand out but yet did little to fix it. That’s what you like. You’re still a good friend to them and you find yourself hanging around them more than just finding them to be brainless nerds who do jerk off rituals every fucking night—weird. But besides from that, you’ve become better. Sure, there’s still those times where you act a bit bitchy but other than that, there’s still a little part of you that lets them off the hook just a tiny bit.

The boys can’t deny that you make them feel all sorts of emotions though. Some days they hate you, some days they yearn for you, and some days they feel the need to bend at your every step. It’s a wreck but let’s be honest here, the eltingville club was always a wreck anyway so what’s the difference???
