The search for Nautiscarader's backstory, ep. 2, Endless Shmaltz

For those of you, who missed episode 1, I am trying to piece together the origins of my writing hobby by finding the oldest fics I've read, with the help of my extensive backup on a portable hard drive, and exploring my earliest ships and fandoms.

And boy, have I jumped the gun with the Monty Python gif in the og post, because this is already an order of magnitude weirder.

But first let's start with Minimax.

Minimax was a Polish(-ish) cartoon tv channel, which showed a hecking lot of cool cartoons (Magic School Bus, Code Lyoko, Lou!, Wakfu, yes, Wakfu, with Polish dub before the English Kickstarter! and many others) However, after hours, it gave way to gaming channel called gameOne, quickly renamed as Hyper. (Minimax itself had an edgy skater phase calling itself Zigzap, and then it became Teletoon+).

Now, if you are scratching your head, remember, we are talking about late 90s/early 2000s, early-internet, pre-Youtube era of TV. Gaming programmes were a thing. But aside from trailers and reviews, Hyper also showed a heck lot of anime, like Neo Genesis Evangellion, Record of Lodoss War, CyberSix (which is effing awesome!), and the topic of today's trip to the past, Gundam Wing.

This was not my intro to the mecha genre, General Daimos, which aired on Polonia1 was, but that channel is a story for a different day.

But most importantly, aside from big robots and political intrigue IN SPAAAAAAAACE, it also had...

...Relena Peacecraft (left), on whom I've had a huge crush as a 14-ish-years-old. In fact, this is also when I have discovered odd dissonances between anime openings and endings. Seriously, make someone new watch the og GW ending and try to convince them it's a space mecha show.

And so, once again, I went to The Internet to find fics about her and the show's hero, called... er, Heero. Yeah that was weird. Anyway, when I've started looking for GW fics, I have noticed a slight disproportion between number of M/F and M/M fics, in favour of the latter.

I would like to remind you, I am from Poland, which is, at low tide, 117% religious.

Anyway, this is how I've discovered yaoi.

But let's go back to Heero/Relena (or HxR, or 1xR, ships had these alphanumeric codes referring the pilots' numbers, AND THEY STILL USE THEM THIS IS SO CUTE @i-just-wanna-be-by-your-side)

I remembered exactly one fic, called "Do it in the road", and, sure enough, I had it saved.

But it was not the only file with that name...

You see, for SOME COCKING REASON, 16 YEARS OLD ME STARTED TRANSLATING IT INTO POLISH.

And this is where the fun trip down the memory lane turned into an existential roller-coaster, cos I've had no recollection of doing so!

...and why would I even do that?! Not to impress my classmates, nor, god forbid, my teachers, I was not going to publish it, and since I have started translating it, I obviously could enjoy it in English anyway. I say 'started', because I have not finished translating this one.

BECAUSE LO AND BEHOLD, I WAS ABLE TO FIND THREE MORE TRANSLATIONS FROM THE SAME PERIOD.

AND THESE ARE FINISHED.

And... I... er, I... find it difficult to explain! Can you even BEGIN to imagine the emotional whiplash I've experienced last night month when I've started writing this?! Now I know how characters in time travel stories feel, when they meet their older/younger counterparts. You should never meet your Heeros.

Now if you are insane inquisitive, you might ask about the quality of these translations. Well, they are... correct. I have mistranslated some idioms, and a few sentences have clunky structures. In other words...

...they could use...

...some...

...polish.

Now, this where I've hit a bit of a snag: it seemed this fic is gone from net. I had, however author's email - in pre-social media days it was customary to sign fics with them. Buuuuut since it's two decades old, I don't think I will eve-

And that would be it for today's internet history lesson! Not only have I found old fics, met their author, I have found an old example of another one of my hobbies - translations. Cos, yeah, I sometimes do them, just for myself, usually, I just like also comparing og lines with translations...

The funny thing is, I did remember name "Blissful Ignorance", but I thought it was a Sailor Moon fic repository, and... oh, but I shouldn't spoil what's coming in episode 3 :)

Thank you for liking my account and enjoying its contents! ❤ Say something about myself... um, yeah, sure? So... what should I even say? I'm probably just gonna infodump some facts and interests of mine, and it will turn into a mini essay. I'm sorry, I'm just bad with things like that, but I tried! 😭

I won't be namedropping mysef, but you can call me anyway you like and use any pronouns you want for me too. My zodiac sign is Aquarius. I'm asexual, usually way too blunt (I try my best not to be though) and I'm a rather anxious person in general welp. I was born and lived my whole life in Poland (that forgotten European country, yep), but I'm in love with Osaka ever since I first visited it. I studied philosophy and anthropology at uni (I had also a short two-semester course of psychology).

I have been a manga&anime fan since elementary school back in the 90s. That's when I learned Sailor Moon is a Japanese anime and then I realized most of the animated shows I watched in kindergarten were also Japanese, like Yattaman, Kaiketsu Zoro or General Daimos. You could say I somewhat grew up with animes while not having any idea about it (I did watch other cartoons, but I didn't love them as much as the ones I mentioned. Animes were always captivating on a completely different level to me. The exception was some Disney movies, I was totally crazy over The Lion King). As a child I dreamed of being a superhero and to be able to read other people's thoughts, I blame Yattaman for that somehow lol.

My love to animes slowly grew over the years into fascination with the country of their origin itself. That means I devoured more and more Japanese (pop)culture like music (from anime openings, visual kei to Japanese idol groups; I started from L'arc en Ciel and Gackt, but my biggest love is Kinki Kids), books, movies and live action series, food etc. I fell in love with sushi after tasting it in the first ever opened sushi restaurant in my town. The first time I tried Pocky (I still remember it was strawberry flavour!) was when a friend brought me a single package as a souvenir from their trip, haha. I have been totally crazy about Japanese snacks for a while now. Anything with melon cream soda flavour or any senbei crackers would be easily my favourite, but I also wouldn't chicken out from trying really odd flavours (takoyaki or wasabi flavoured sweet carbonated drink? Count me in! Also wasabi is awesome).

I used to read tons of mangas and watch lots of animes; I have many more-or-less recent favourite series (like Assassination Classroom, Angels of Death or The Way of the House Husband), but over the years there are only some of them I always end up coming back to, no matter how many years have passed. Those are: all Clamp titles (Tokyo Babylon and Card Captor Sakura especially), Death Note (I used to read it when it was just starting coming out, crazy), Saiyuki by Kazuya Minekura, Please Save My Earth, some Ghibli movies (my favourite is Spirited Away), Slayers (anime), Rurouni Kenshin. One Piece now joined the parade of my all time favourites :D

I actually watched and read One Piece for the first time was when I was in high school, then came back to it at uni, then had a decade long break till my friend kicked my ass and told me to finally catch up and move on from Thriller Bark (which is where I stopped that decade ago, lol). I'm glad he made me take on the challenge, it was a while since I got so hooked and engaged in anything. It's also partially thanks to the Netflix's live action, it reignited the love for the series in me again as well. Yes, that means I caught up to be up to date rather recently, I believe it happened in January of this year only, lol. Have been pretty much obsessed ever since.

I adore Good Omens. If I had to choose only one movie to save for the future of mankind, it would be Battle Royale (has nothing to do with Fortnite btw lol). I love escape rooms and board games, but I have only one friend who sometimes likes to do them with me (you know who you are :D). I'm also a gamer, but I have a very peculiar game taste, I enjoy what most people wouldn't even touch with a stick, which is niche indie games, walking sims, puzzle games and horror games (especially, sometimes really obscure, Asian ones). Silent Hill 2 is gonna always be my most favourite game. The only multiplayer game I play is Dead by Daylight.

My favourite youtuber is John Wolfe, it started because of his series of random horror games, it ended with me just enjoying his vibe in general~ lately he does some ghost debunking vids too, it's so entertaining :D

My favourite holiday is Halloween, even though we actually don't celebrate it here so I could never go trick or treating myself, sadly. I'm kinda a tea addict, I love black teas (especially with aromas and things like petals or fruits in it), green teas (sakura green tea ❤), white teas (my favourite is with rose), darjeeling... the only teas I don't like at all are irish cream and earl gray, I'm sorry xD I also don't drink coffee or alcohol because they're too bitter for me, I have a sweet tooth (my hyperfocusing brain mode runs solely on sugar). But if Law joins the Strawhats, just like I predict will happen, I *will* make an exception and drink to that. A freaking rum, even, because arrrr! :D

I also love cats and have one currently, he's called Felix and he is adorable and silly, typical short-haired, white and gray fur cat :D

@marypsue tagged me in a post to share the last sentence of whatever i wrote and then tag people, however i am very bad at tagging and the last line is a not very interesting bit of dialogue, so i have elected instead to give a sneak peak of this wip from the last scene i worked on 👇

Janai spent an hour watching soldiers drill with their swords before anyone asked her why she was there. With her fumbling Kalseti and those terrible translators, she was able to ask why Kalseti soldiers trained with such obsolete weapons. It was a discipline exercise, she was told, but more importantly it was symbolic. Kallesti, the founder of Kalset, had led her people to freedom with a sword. Freedom from what, exactly, no one volunteered. To train with a sword was an act of tradition and patriotism.

“Will you teach me?” Janai asked.

The drill sword was substantially heavier than her daggers, and its blunted edge meant the only real injury she could deliver was a bruise. The soldiers wore padding, but none of it would have fit her so Janai did not. A polite young man named Gain instructed her posture and footwork, guiding her through rudimentary forms that didn’t look like much but left her arms and back aching.

The soldiers around her noticed Daimos’ presence before Janai did. She lowered the drill sword and bowed. “Am I needed, General?”

“No, I’m simply surprised to find you here.” Daimos walked to her and the soldiers dispersed, either returning to duty or going back to their own drills. “Interested in expanding your repertoire?”

“I’ve never had access to skills that were outside of what my madam believed I should learn,” Janai said. “I have a great deal of unfilled time, and plenty to learn about the Empire. Besides my suffering through language lessons.”

The corners of Daimos’ mouth pulled up. “I only wish we had more interesting skills to teach.” Their expression softened. “Don’t work yourself too hard. I have good news.”

“Oh?”

“We’ve made landfall,” Daimos said. “In Surtalesu Province.”

Janai felt her heart skip a beat. “Surtalesu?” she whispered. Just the word in her mouth reminded her of warm spring breezes and the smell of damp forage, of ewes calling to their lambs and cows to their calves.

Generation Gap

Me: As an old Chinese proverb says, even a piggy can climb a tree when it's praised. @jurian-is-cinnamon-roll: Oh, I felt it deep inside. But I can be a piggy, why not. 🩷 Me: ...oh fuck me, we have a generation gap here. People who got into anime through Sailor Moon or later don't know the piggy scene.

I'm not sure whether I mentioned it before, but shortly after the fall of communism, a shitton of private TV stations popped up ass outta nowhere, airing the weirdest things. For example, Polonia 1 - a channel apparently backed by some Italian company that got a shitton of various tapes - telenovelas from all over South and Central America, old anime like Yatterman, Time Bokan, Daimos, Dash Kappei, Tiger Mask, Captain Tsubasa and so on (by some miracle - not Fist of the North Star), some of them with Italian dubs that the typical Polish one-person voiceover went over, and some people old enough to remember that also know the gags like Dash Kappei chasing panties or the Odate Buta. However, the Polish translation of Odate Buta's line, quoted above, has an entirely different meaning: that even the most unlikely and awkward person can achieve things with proper encouragement.

Red: Red, or Raine as she's called is a very unique demon, being one of the first Demon prototypes created by Akila and Daimos, but with a major flaw, having extremely strong phsychic powers actually provented her from Akila's Will. Still as a very strong demon she was kept alive in hopes of being useful. Millenia passed and Raine managed to scape her prision, and no one really cared to try get her back. She wandered Tanza, barely scrapping by till she met Aster, a runaway human in search of knowledge of the world. Raine became his Contract, they eventually formed an actual friendship, and eventual romance. She's quite the airhead, loves pretty things like flowers and sparkly dresses, very found of animals but they arent found of her. Has a daughter named Amalla.

Aster: A human of mysterious origins, doesnt comment about his past before meeting Raine some odd 500 years ago. Very tall and ominous, he has a passion for potion making and its his specialty, due to his contract with Raine he has acess to her powerful phsykic magic but he's also a powerful mage in his own right, his services being sought after by the entire realm and has attracted the Demon Queen herself, resulting in her asking (read: forcing) Aster to accept tutoring her very unpleasant niece Imay. Aster is very serious, quiet and has a general intimidating aura. Doesnt take well to being questioned or having his work interrupted.

Amalla: Aster and Raine's daughter. Ama is a half-demon but a very different one. Unlike most half demons, she's a tube baby, an altered clone of Aster, that was infused with Raine's demonic essence while still an embryo. The result was a more stable demon-human hybrid. Ama has developed pretty normally as a 5 year old, aside from being able to chew trought almost any material.

Erigon: Garlasia best friend, other half, soul mate what have you. They have been inseparable since meeting as children. Erigon is half drakin half human, and a very talented mage, and part of the rising star team alongside Garly. Calm, shy and quiet, Eri is a huge nerd both in the academic sense and as a geek. Still, despite being the more 'inteligent' half of the duo, he's as willing to get into trouble as Garly is.

Kyran: An avian drakin, originally from the place known as the Wastelands, he was rescued by hunters and brought to Izeriath where he was raised in the Hunter HQ along with other rescued orphans. He looks very intimidating and angry, but he's actually a chill dude, common sense usually goes right past him and he's also not very book smart, he's very confident in his skills and likes to show off. Always togheter with Garly and Eri, joining their shenanigans and causing even more chaos.

Drogan: Garly's youguer brother. He's a soft boy, artistic inclined and not at all build for combat, but given their current circumstances he didnt had a choice. Sort of lives under Garly shadow, and likes to pretend hes fine with being the 'lesser' sibling. Part of the squad with Garly, Eri and Kyran as a support, he doesnt mind not receiving as much attention as the other trhee after all he barely gets involved in fighst anyway...

my only reason for not wanting 2010 American weeb culture to return is because i don’t want to relive the horror of my local con being run amok by unconsented to glomping and yaoi paddling and the homestucks smearing grey paint on everything 😹also people constantly telling me to cosplay Rangiku but thats my own baggage ajdhaksjd

but i do get it i miss less the culture and more the quality of anime itself. last decade of anime imo has been a lot of misses
