Man, I’ve been reading through the Commission Handbook, and while overall I think it’s just kinda neat, the few notes we get from Founder Five kind of break my heart. Some quotes from the Founder’s notes for those interested:

(Referring to a commission agent who keeps trying and failing to save her son using the briefcase) “She reminds me of how badly I want this crazy experiment to work. I want to go back desperately.”

((Crowley works for the Illuminati under Kirsten Geary who oversees most of the Bees in their faction along with a number of more mundane agents and recruits. She is moderately terrifying, having been recruited after murdering a group of fratbros that tried to sacrifice her to a demon in hopes of securing their own employment with the company - and after torturing the information about who they were working for out of them, of course. She is very efficient about culling employees that underperform or just manage to piss her off on a given day.

She also argued against Crowley's own execution when the higher-ups demanded her head.

Crowley may have a small and entirely professional crush on her.

(She wouldn't be the first or only one either. There are a lot of people connected to the company that are equal part afraid and smitten with the legendary KG.)

KG has been foisting some of her workload on Crowley for some years now, for some combination of justifying Crowley's continued employment through periods where she may not be able to do field work, belief that Crowley may be genuinely capable of taking over should KG get her own promotions, and well, not wanting to do it herself. Crowley likes the work well enough, so she isn't too bothered about the actual reasoning.

Past KG, Crowley gets along fairly well with a lot of the other departments in their office. Cassini, their Systems Admin, has caught some of Crowley's reports when KG has been on a warpath and its best not to remind her that you exist, and she's 'lost' some things that might reflect badly on Crowley. Cassini functionally has material on everybody in the Illuminati; it's her safety net. So long as Crowley doesn't make problems for her, she's content enough to keep her secrets.

Which kind of extends to a lot of Crowley's coworkers. Crowley's pretty inoffensive in a cadre of cutthroats and backstabbers all trying to get ahead or die trying. The Illuminati hire for ambition and Crowley's manifests oddly. The money and power most are angling for aren't her primary interests. She doesn't necessarily want a promotion or prestige. She Wants, but she wants smaller things mostly - a home, a community, satisfaction to curiosity. Boring stuff, but it means she isn't quite competition to what most folks want. She isn't going to go out her way to take anything from them.

And what she does have she's earned. She hasn't climbed company ranks on schmoozing alone; she clearly doesn't put much effort in there. She's a genuine powerhouse with personal favor from the top of the pyramid, so anyone who would get into their head to try to screw had better be absolutely certain they can do it right on the first try. She's docile enough, but not many people would survive a fair fight against her.

The higher ups know that too. And they are making careful calculations about how much use they think they can get out of before she realizes that she's beyond their ability to control.

But otherwise, yeah. To most of the rank and file, they appreciate that she's nice enough to probably not screw them over or have them killed. And if they don't, they realize trying to screw her over will probably not go in their favor.

And on her end, she's friendly enough towards most people in the office, but not super close with anyone because everyone is some degree of asshole.))

Hello yes I need a support group for dogs that are too smart. Signed Tassie up for a scentwork class but even though we've been practicing, we've only used the one odor (birch), so I figured I'd at least introduce her to the new odor (anise) tonight and see how she does searching for it. My swabs are extremely stale (have never refreshed them since I got them and forgot to buy the oil oops), to the point where I could barely smell the oil from the jar and not at all on the swabs. No big deal, I'll put two swabs in to compensate and see how it goes.

First search is container with birch to let her see that we're doing a container search, and warm her up. Takes her a bit to realize what we're doing, finds the box no problem. I then swap the birch box for the anise box, keeping it in the same spot to help her, and send her out (after letting her sniff the swabs and getting treated for it of course).

And she finds it in less than 30 seconds.

Okay, she's cheating with the location but still, HUGE party oh my god you're so smart what a good girl! Let's try the box in a new spot.

What the hell is this a fluke? Let's record this next run.

Okay, let's see about stumping her. We'll throw the birch box back in, and make her look for BOTH. Is it just ODOR or will the familiar scent get her distracted?

Not a problem. Finds the anise first even with stale swabs and I just refreshed her birch swabs a week ago. Quick search. The hell.

Anyways this dog hated scent work six months ago and was the biggest brat about learning it, but I guess we'll try her in some public searches Monday to see how she does because there's no WAY this isn't a fluke. And if it isn't holy shit.

Yesterday, my wife and I attended our city’s annual summer kick-off street fair. Our city is generally dog-friendly, and most of the community events have some kind of designated dog zone with water bowls and shade.

We talked about bringing Aspen along. In the end, we left him home—and I’m glad we did. The fair environment would have been too much for him. The dogs we did see were fearful or reactive. We saw a Siberian that was so visibly matted it looked staged for those ASPCA commercials. Cue Sarah McLachlan.

It did get me thinking about how to proceed with Aspen’s outside training. Ultimately, we do want him to be able to come out with us more. I’d like him to be CGC-certified, eventually.
