"Britain’s largest gathering of counter-terrorism experts assembled in London last month to discuss what one police chief called 'legal but harmful protest' following Israel’s war on Gaza. Inside a cavernous Docklands conference hall, companies at the Counter Terror Expo displayed gas mask-clad dummies and crowd control systems as enthusiastic AI reps promised revolutionary advances in surveillance. Tools for hacking phones with 'brute force,' monitoring someone’s emotional state based on their social media and rapidly digesting the contents of an 'acquired' computer were all up for sale. Among the potential customers were foreign police departments, including officers fresh from Georgia’s violent crackdown on anti-Russia protests.

Several salespeople declined to explain their products to the media. 'I can’t believe they let you people in here,' one rep told Declassified after seeing our press card. 'I think it’s disgusting.' Her company markets AI tools for military and law enforcement to process recordings of people’s voices. 

When delegates weren’t browsing spyware or sipping craft beer with a £12 'world food' meal deal, they could listen to the security industry’s leading lights. These included detective chief superintendent Maria Lovegrove who runs Britain’s Prevent strategy against radicalisation. She trumpeted 53 arrests for terrorism offences since October 7. Only one of these was for violence. The rest concerned social media posts or attending gatherings. Asked whether this data suggests police are overreacting to peaceful pro-Palestine protests, Lovegrove valorised an 'early intervention' approach. She told Declassified this was the 'greatest tool in preventing terror attacks' and insisted officers 'only arrest and prosecute when we have to.' Among those arrests were three women found guilty for wearing paraglider stickers at a protest.

Dom Murphy – the Met’s counter terrorism commander – told delegates he was monitoring 'legal but harmful' protests and the risk of 'low-sophistication' attacks by people radicalised online or at university since October 7th. 'If there are 100,000 people at a protest, and one person holding a Hamas flag, we will find them and arrest them,' Murphy reassured attendees. A majority of recent arrests targeted individuals aged under 17, he boasted, as proof that the 'early intervention' approach was working. 

Another panellist praised Britain’s ability to pre-emptively arrest people for public order offences at demonstrations and target them for terror offences further down the line. Craig McCann, a former senior Prevent officer, expressed the mood in the room when he described ceasefire marches as a 'permissive environment for the transfer of extremist ideology.' Like other speakers, he sought to delegitimise opponents of Israel’s war on Gaza by characterising pro-Palestine protests as an 'Islamist camp conflating with far-Right anti-Semitism.' McCann explicitly linked Palestinian nationalism with Nazism, an Israeli propaganda point. Fellow panellists claimed parts of London were a 'no-go zone for Jews.' Discussing threats from 'street protest all the way through to terrorism,' the conference presented far Left, far Right, 'Islamist' and 'environmentalist' ideologies as equal, inter-related threats to British society. ... After lunch, discussion turned to 'British values' and protecting England from the menace of social media and foreign flags that vexed thousands of officers under Murphy’s command. Many felt the next-generation tech on display would ensure ever more effective crackdowns on street protest and dissent."

(September 5-8,2021)

 We cross the border into Georgia from Armenia. We travelled there in four hours. Although the government forbade it, we were unable to snap pictures of the beautiful mountain scenery along the route. An immigration office at the border will inspect all of our belongings and documentation. Fortunately, it has already declared that Filipinos having residence visas for the UAE can visit the nation using an E-visa. They requested the Negative PCR test, which we had completed in Armenia before our trip because we were travelling during COVID-19.

Additionally, they needed to reside in the UAE for at least six months before entering the nation. We took our holiday in the Philippines in December 2020 and returned to the United Arab Emirates on January 23, 2021. Even though it has been eight months, they took the time to thoroughly examine our admission and departure stamps from the UAE. (Just kidding, but they don't really trust us anyhow.) We arrived at the Grand Palace Hotel about 4 p.m. We simply take a little nap and unpack the clothes we will need for the next several days. The hotel was decent, but what made it great was that it was close to Europe Square, which has lots of eateries and tourist attractions.

By 5 PM, it was becoming dark outside, so we made the decision to have supper and take a leisurely stroll around Europe Square.

Day 1: Europe Square

-Hot Air Balloon - We each paid 50 gel, and although though it only takes a few minutes, you will get a 360-degree view of Tbilisi. All in all, it was well worth the less expensive price. At least you ought to give it a go.

Day 2: Kazbegi

We got up early on our second day because the hotel provides a complimentary breakfast for us. We changed and got ready for our excursion after BF. It was really chilly, and as we didn't realise that our trip would be taking place in a high-range or mountainous location, we didn't pack any coats. Fortunately, we made a detour at the Zhinvali Reservoir, where shawls and other souvenirs were widely available. However, the expense was high. We were forced to get one since, eventually, the linen was still worthwhile. Before we forget, we also made the decision to purchase some mementos.

Note: Book Breakfast in the hotel (it will save you more) and bring jackets on winter !!

-Gudauri View Point - From here, you may choose to attempt paragliding and horseback riding, among other things. We were going to attempt paragliding, but I don't have enough cash, and I left my wallet and credit card in the hotel. (We were upset not to be able to attempt the same as we are very into extreme fun.)

Note 2: Never leave your wallet or cards, you’ll never know when you needed it the most

We had a magnificent lunch at Gudauri, Dushet'Is Raioni; it was a buffet, so we were able to eat a lot, especially because we would be returning home late. Our co-travelers who were lucky enough to experience paragliding took up a significant portion of our tour time. So, when we arrived at Gergeti Trinity Church, we could only see fogs. So, even if we wanted to amuse ourselves, there isn't much to see up there but the church.

It was very dark on the trip home, and some roads were small and rainy, so the driver drove carefully. We arrived at the hotel at 9 p.m. and opted not to have supper, preferring to sleep and recover.

Day 3: Kakheti and Badiauri - Morning

- Badiauri , We witnessed traditional bread production and sampled their native bread, Puri. It would have been lovely if we had coffee.

- Bodbe Monastery

- Vineria- we had our lunch here , their food is really great . Superb .

- Vineria kakheti - We also did our wine tasting here, and they were gracious enough to let us sample a wide choice of wines. As a result, we decided to purchase six bottles of wine to bring with us to the UAE. You should also try Cha Cha. They stated it wasn't powerful, but it certainly is for me. haha

Day 3: Sighnaghi

-Sighnaghi Village or the city of love -I enjoy going here because the environment is pleasant, and you may choose to stroll or ride an ATV. But we like to stroll to observe the beauty of the hamlet; they also offer ziplines.

-Georgia's Great Wall - if you start, you must finish all the way to the end. There's no turning back. We simply did it, and it was well worth it.

We arrived at the hotel at 4 p.m., slept briefly, and then chose to eat supper at Pasanauri restaurant, as my friends had advised us to eat pork in Georgia.It did not disappoint us; it was quite excellent and tender. Unfortunately, we cannot have this in the UAE.

Day 4:  Mtskheta and Old Tblisi

-Jvari Monastery 

-Aragvi and Mtkvari Rivers

-Svetitskhoveli Monastery - It was pouring when we arrived, and the monastery was under renovation, but we still managed to shoot several images before leaving.

 -Old Tblisi - It was intended to be free on the first day of the trip, but because we came late, we did it on the last day, which was still free; unfortunately, we were unable to experience their famed sulphur bath because we had a flight that afternoon. But you gotta try!!

We returned to the hotel at 2, checked out, and waited for the bus to bring us up. We decided to eat lunch at the airport as we waited for our flight back to the UAE.

If you’re looking for a warm European getaway this autumn, look no further than Turkey.

And with average temperatures between 18°C – 25°C in October, while many Europeans see Turkey as the perfect ‘fly and flop’ beach holiday, it has much more to offer than just sun loungers.

Turkey bridges Europe with Asia and is often described as where ‘east meets west’. It shares borders with Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq and Syria. Each country influences Turkey’s culture in its own way, so that each corner of the country feels completely different to the others.

Where should I visit in Turkey?

Turkey’s capital is Ankara, but its largest city and financial centre is Istanbul. Either one makes for a great jumping off point, but Istanbul is easier to navigate as a tourist.

Turkey has seven regions. These are the Eastern Anatolia Region, Central Anatolia Region, Black Sea Region, Mediterranean Region, Aegean Region, Marmara Region, and the Southeastern Anatolia Region.

The Eastern Anatolia Region is the largest, consisting mainly of mountains and Turkey’s largest lake, Lake Van. The capital, Ankara, is located in the Central Anatolia Region and the tourist hub of Istanbul is in the Marmara.

Each area is famous for different things, but in general Istanbul is seen as the most popular destination. Bodrum works out as the best place to stay on a budget (with the best nightlife) and Cappadocia has some of the most beautiful and dramatic landscapes. The best beaches are Patara beach, the Bodrum peninsula and Kaputas beach.

Take a trip to Göreme National Park, Cappadocia

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia are on the UNESCO World Heritage site list. The spectacular rocky landscape was entirely sculpted by erosion and contains evidence of Byzantine art in the post-Iconoclastic period like no where else. You can also see the remains of ancient human dwellings dating as far back at the 4th century.

While you’re there, you can take a 1-hour hot air balloon flight and look out over the “fairy chimneys”, a nickname for the unique tick formations there. The best time to go is at sunrise, when the skies are a faded orange.

Bathe in the blue lagoon of Ölüdeniz

Ölüdeniz is a lagoon and beach resort in the Fethiye district of the Muğla Province in southwestern Turkey.

This area is known as the Turquoise Coast and so unsurprisingly, the seawater of Ölüdeniz is famous for its shades of turquoise and aquamarine. Here there is a sandy bay to visit and the lagoon itself is a national nature reserve. 

A great activity to do here is paragliding. It is regarded as one of the best places in the world to experience it due to its unique panoramic views and stable weather conditions – 2000m in the air.

The best international airports to fly into for the Turquoise Coast are Fethiye and Antalya.

Spot sea turtles in Dalyan

Nature and animals lovers will adore Dalyan turtle beach (also called Iztuzu Beach). It’s known all over Turkey for its natural splendour. There are over 100 varieties of bird species here as well as three varieties of turtle, including the endangered Loggerhead sea turtle.

You can take a boat trip from the town’s harbour to reach the beach and visit the main turtle conservation area. This is a great place to swim alongside turtles, visit nearby hot springs or take a mud bath.

The mud here is rich in minerals like magnesium and sulfur, both beneficial to the skin.

Visit the Blue Mosque in Istanbul

The famous Blue Mosque (or Sultan Ahmed Mosque) is an Ottoman-era masterpiece and functioning place of worship in Istanbul.

But why is it called the Blue Mosque? Because its interior is lined with over 20,000 İznik tiles, a ceramic that is turquoise in colour. The mosque’s upper levels are also painted blue, with lots of natural light and more than 200 stained-glass windows.

The mosque is particularly architecturally unique due to its six minarets and five domes. Six minarets were unusual even for an imperial mosque built in the 1600s as they implied equality with the multi-minareted mosques of Mecca.

It’s popular with both tourists and worshippers, so you’ll have to make sure you book your slot – but it’s worth it to experience the grandeur of this historic building.

Explore Derinkuyu’s underground city

The Derinkuyu underground city is an ancient, multi-level city in the Nevşehir province. It was built to shelter 20,000 people during the Arab–Byzantine wars (780–1180 AD), spanning eight floors and reaching depths of over 280 feet (85 metres).

The city continued to be used by Christians as protection from the Mongolian incursions of Timur in the 14th century and then when the region fell to the Ottomans, it was used as a refuge by the natives from the Turkish Muslim rulers.

You can take a guided walking tour and explore the excavated ruins, including the remains of stables, cellars, storage rooms, kitchens, wineries, and wells.

The experience is unforgettable and a very popular option for tourists, but be aware that the narrow tunnels and small chambers can make navigating Derinkuyu tricky for those who suffer from claustrophobia.

When is the best time of year to visit Turkey?

April, May, September and October are lovely and warm, with temperatures of between 20°C and 30°C. These are typically the best times to visit Turkey’s historic sites and the latter two months can offer European travellers some much needed winter sun. Fethiye, Bodrum and Antalya are considered the top three winter sun destinations.

By November the temperatures drop but with averages hovering in the mid-teens it’s still much warmer than most other parts of Europe. 

The summer months of June through to September tend to be very hot, with temperatures reaching 35°C on the south coast.

Is it safe to travel to Turkey?

The UK’s FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) advises against all travel to areas within 10 km of the border with Syria, except the city of Kilis.

This extends to all but essential travel to other areas of Sirnak, Kilis (including Kilis city), Hatay provinces, the provinces of Diyarbakir, Tunceli and Hakkari.

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign affairs also advises against travel anywhere along the borders with Iraq and Syria.

However the FCDO also notes that most trips to Turkey every year are trouble-free.
