Gerard's whole life feels like a never ending "Do you want to go to the castle where the dogs are or go back to your frog pond?"

Because it's so demeaning. He can be presented with the choice but he can only ever really go back to the frog pond. He could fight in the war but he was never taught to do anything but hide. He could fix his marriage but he was so young when he was cursed he doesn't know how to do anything but hide. Because his formative years -the years that define who he is and how he reacts- were spent fleeing from herons and dogs and boots. and he may have had his body back for a time, but he will always mentally be in the frog pond, with nothing to do but throw tantrums and hide and make up friends that will not speak to him.

And what lesson did he learn? He deserved it. Pinocchio lied, Ylfa killed, and Gerard understands that they had no choice, but to him, it was always his fault. Elody tells him he wasn't evil, and he doesn't hear her. Because good little boys don't get turned into frogs, and at nine?? The only lesson he could have learned was that he was evil.

Gerard isnt a coward. He just can't go back to the castle, because that's where the dogs are.

gerard and elody have such an interesting dynamic, ‘cause elody is someone who had to grow up too quick, and gerard is someone who never had the chance to grow up in the first place

Blurb on my thoughts to Gerard in the latest episode of neverafter:

Being able to see what his life in the pond was like makes me rethink his initial intro scene. When we saw his first backstory cut scene and his arguments with Elody about the war, I had the assumption that he just got comfortable in his life as a prince. He fell back into his old privileged, cowardly habits and that’s why he didn’t want to fight. While I still believe that to be true, I think there’s more to it. Gerard spent a good portion of his childhood fighting for his life in a cold empty pond. He didn’t have anyone to talk to and was (I assume) more often than not, the subject of murder attempts. That was his life. He fought everyday just to live. And then Elody comes along and she’s nice and smart and gives a fuck. So he’s saved. And he lives in a castle and it’s supposed to be happily ever after. But then there’s a war. And his people expect him to fight for them, but this man, this man who never fully got to to grow up and mature thinks “I already did my fighting”. He already fought and worked to survive. He shouldn’t have to do this again. It’s not fair. It doesn’t make any sense and it’s not fair.

I NEVER considered that Elody would have found Gerard's body. I thought maybe she would have assumed he was dead, but I literally forgot that they even left bodies?? was that brought up before??

That conversation my god. They weren't speaking to each other, really. Not communicating, at least.

Gerard was looking at her and seeing all the ways he failed as a husband, and Elody was looking at Gerard and seeing his corpse.

There is something so earth-shattering too about Elody saying "You were supposed to be eaten by a heron." Because that was probably the intention?? The intention of a curse like that is never to help them find true love, it's for them to die before they get there.

And FOR WHAT! Gerard could not have deserved that at age nine. It was cruel.

"There's a lot left in that ever after." Oh my fucking GOD Brennan. Bravo.

I like to think that Gerard in his initial once upon a time had a very Disney go of it, real fancy transformation after true love’s kiss, all that jazz! but the second time around... I don’t know, something about being chucked into a wall says “unceremoniously turned into some dude with greasy hair” to me

Brennan keeps describing gerard as a "giant bullfrog" but his art CLEARLY depicts a tree frog

Like that's a straight up green tree frog.

THIS is a bullfrog.

Brennan probably said "giant bullfrog" bc gerard is like a man sized frog, but that phrasing naturally makes me think of the African giant bullfrog, pictured in the three images above. However, if they're really committed to the whole smooth green skin thing, they could have used an American bullfrog for his art

See the American bullfrog has that same smooth green traditionally froggy face with the big fat lumpy bullfroggy body.

Anyway I just am super autistic about frogs and dimension 20 so I'm nitpicking but it vaguely annoys me that Gerards art is a tree frog when Brennan always says Gerard is like a bullfrog whenever he doesn't just use the adjective frog-like
