FUCK U MODERN AU’S UR GHOSTS.

The Captain and the Lieutenant met in the army. They retired from there and live together in a small town.

The Captain works in a small war museum alongside Humphrey who is also the local historian

James is a girl dad to Kitty

Thomas is obviously a writer who ends up trying to place his books into the shelves of the local bookshop

Humphrey is also the owner of said bookshop and keeps telling him to stop doing that.

Michael and Alison rented out a property in the small town from Fanny and turned it into an Air BnB

Mary and Annie run a bakery/cafe

Pat obviously runs the Boy Scouts and if it isn’t the summer, he works at the community centre organizing events for the town.

Robin is a park ranger with a love for the stars :’)

Kitty is an aspiring actress and runs a theatre group. She often goes away from the town for work but always comes back from shows during the weekend or if there is time off

Julian was born in the small town and if he isn’t off being morally bankrupt, he often visits the small town and stays with Robin

The Captain almost always watched Kitty preform during her opening days on the theatre. If not opening days, then premiere of a movie, if not a movie then the final day of a production she is in as a surprise :’)

Writing a ghosts reincarnation fic and I’m only on the prologue and already made my friends I’ve asked for judgement from cry

All the main ghosts minus cap have already been sucked off and cap is the only one left and cap is sat talking to Alison opening up and in his own sort of way of coming out to her he talks about how if anyone had known in his time he’d have faced a similar fate to Turing and that that was a closer explanation to what would have happened than Oscar Wilde’s fate. He also references living longer than Turing but not quite as long as Wilde but having much less to show for his life.

I then have him broach the topic of reincarnation and soulmates by asking Alison if she believes in them upon her saying she’s more open minded since meeting the ghosts he explains the belief of reincarnation then soulmates and throws a bit of shade on people who think Romeo and Juliet were soulmates because soulmates and star crossed lovers are very different. And tells her if reincarnation exists they’ll find their way back to button house and that they’re all family.

He then reveals his name and as he’s being sucked off he tells her that they ‘shall meet again some sunny day’

While writing this I was listening to ‘empty chairs at empty tables’ from les mis as I felt that fit the vibe of both the Captain the lonely ghost and Alison as she looses her found family. I concerned my flatmate with the song until I explained and she said she’d been meaning to watch ghosts and that she loves a show with both gay characters and ghosts. Our group chat name was ‘be gay do crime’ but one is a mentor so we had change it.

I keep thinking about what an amazing show Ghosts is.

It somehow manages to go from being very silly to very touching without missing a beat.

And I think exploring the concept of ghosts being “very ordinary and very human” extremely clever for a sitcom.

Like the fact they can sleep and seem to require sleep, each with their own room, just adds to the domestic bliss feel of it.

And I really like that Mike was allowed to accept their existence from episode 1. The show would’ve have had a very different feel if it was about Alison trying to hide the ghosts from him, or trying to prove them to him and he just doesn’t believe it.

Instead, Mike is one of my favourite characters. He’s very hard working and very supportive. Whenever Alison says “can you do this? It’s a ghost thing.” he drops everything to help them. e.g. the first Christmas special. He’s trying to make the perfect Christmas, but when Lady B wants a bigger tree he goes out in the dark to chop one down.

I could go on.

I love that Robin confirming that he witnessed Mary's execution but the other ghosts had never heard it before, despite really wanting to, means that Robin never told anyone without Mary's permission.

I feel like Julian probably asked over a game of chess, but I also don't think the other ghosts pushed to know because they wanted her to be ready.

The Captain owns a dog and a cat with Havers!

Havers owns a flower shop (because fuck u I wanted a flower shop au at one point. He fucking gardens okay???)

Thomas and Kitty are like the besties siblings ever

Thomas sometimes for fun asks Kitty to act out his poems and Kitty has so much fun with the interpretation

Kitty does TikToks on the street sometimes and if he sees any of the residents she will try to drag them or include them in the TikTok😭

During the Captain’s breaks, he’ll go to Havers’ shop and eat lunch there and just chill, if he’s not there he’s with Fanny and Pat, having lunch

Julian frequents the bar and brings Robin over a lot and they be chaotic bisexuals and pansexuals respectively

Mary had a kitchen incident that nearly burnt down hers and Annie’s house ;;;;

Humphrey and the Captain would come in as guest speakers at the local school to talk about history :’)

The Captain would talk about 20th century-present (but he absolutely loves presenting about the early 20th century)

Humphrey would present Tudor to Stuart

Robin would also come in purely for biology talks and do history talks too but only he does prehistoric history :’)

The small town sits beside a National Park that has petroglyphs and cave systems. So Robin works there!

This could 100% be similar to other peoples’ ideas, but I propose a ghosts high school au in which the inhabitants of button house are part of a history club

They’re all really passionate about learning about their specific time period, and considering me, who’d have guessed that I’m saying it’s a special interest for some of them

Robin, Mary, Humphrey, Kitty, Thomas, and Fanny are all seniors, Captain, Pat, and Julian are juniors, and Allison is a freshman

Aside from Julian, Fanny, and Pat, people think the group is kind of weird, so they don’t really interact with them a lot

Allison and Mike have been dating since like 7th grade and they both just moved to this school from the smaller of the two middle schools on the other side of town

Mike isn’t in the club, but loves hearing about their shenanigans

Their full names are Robin Stone, Mary Vernon, Humphrey Bone, Kitty Bellamy, Thomas Thorne, Steph Button, Laurie or Captain Gunn (everyone is missing out on the comedic genius of giving Cap the surname Gunn), Pat Butcher, and Jules Fawcett (I stole a couple of these from here: https://images.app.goo.gl/52CwxSMMdEnXi2mMA )

Some headcanons about the crew:

Robin started the club

He originally called it the paleontology club and started it with his brother who graduated

After this, he and Mary who were already friends made it into a history club where she added her knowledge of Middle Ages and the witch trials

Mary is pyrophobic and Robin can be something of a pyromaniac

People should really know not to date Thomas by now

He will write you poems, but he will also be the most overbearing guy you have ever seen

Captain’s pretty much grown up around army people, so his interest in history probably started the earliest of everyone

From kindergarten to now, he could often be seen reading something about ww2 or the army

Mary, Humphrey, Pat, and Captain are autistic (I go back and forth on everyone else lmao)

Only Humphrey is diagnosed

Mary wears eye makeup, but she always forgets and rubs her eyes, smudging it all over her face

Humphrey has severe dyspraxia

For several years now, Captain has not been seen without a fidget toy in hand for longer than 10 minutes

Thomas keeps a note book in the breast pocket of his button up

Mary’s other special interest is Mori kei, cooking, and various crafty stuff

Julian is infamous for the time him and several other students were caught having sex together on school grounds and got suspended

Fanny’s on the speech and debate team and she’s in triple advanced math

Robin’s actually really good with people and strategy type stuff, but he’s never been good at school

Robin’s favorite class is astronomy

Allison is Fanny’s 2nd cousin in law

Cap and Fanny grew up in really stifling, high-pressure environments, and can sometimes have trouble understanding the perspectives of those who didn’t

They sort of bonded over this shared experience

Even if Kitty’s older than him, Captain sometimes takes a sort of mentor role with her because her parents never really let her learn how to do things and he’s very street smart

They don’t really have a club leader, but Pat tends to run activities and Cap coordinates keeping the club alive and raising funds for their yearly after school field trip to the local museum

Thomas and Humphrey are on the soccer team
