season 6. i think this season is a real turning point in their dynamic and it’s long because a lot happens in those last 4 episodes that must be discussed.

ziva mentioning tony and rivkin just :|

my girl just STARING at tony after they finally see each other. “you could have called.” worried about his drinking. bonus of having those pictures of her hung up. 

tony figuring out about a secret bf real quick.

ziva is going to israel. tony being all :( about it. and he spoke hebrew to her. i like to think he starts learning hebrew while he’s agent afloat.

getting locked in closets and  tension :) love that for them.

“i’m tired of pretending” “me too.” hmm sounds like another read between the lines scene these two do like once every few episodes these days.

moment in the elevator with tara and the whole thing about tony not moving on since jeanne. she says to pick the right woman and the elevator opens on ziva.

anytime they talk about kort i get war flashbacks. you get vengeance in like 7 years, tony. keep holding out.

ziva complaining about tony when she and gibbs are out in the field. for literally no reason at all. he wasn’t even mentioned.

the last 4 eps of this season are basically the tiva show. they barely work the case lol

ziva calling tony jealous after she gets off the phone with rivken. we’re about to hit full tiva angst.

ziva not wanting to lie to tony. oh bestie.

tony going to talk to ducky about ziva. ducky assuming it’s a personal conversation. ‘it’s not what you think.’ literally is. tony finding out ziva almost died in morocco. tony watching the news footage. pausing on rivkin. deciding to investigate.

abby ‘does it have anything to do with ziva?’ to tony

tony testing ziva in the elevator and ziva lying. they both know she’s lying.

the thing about all their fighting in the squad room over riven and the ncis:la stuff is that tony is jealous. but tony is also right to be concerned about him. but ziva just puts it in the he’s jealous corner. neither of them are able to be objective, really

tony calling ziva they have a lead only to take her seat with michael. michael saying he’s, “like a big brother.” things are getting good.

ziva and tony are fighting in the bullpen again.

honorable mention to saying he’d never break rule #12 while staring at ziva leaving and gibbs smile. gibbs knows more than he lets on.

and oop, rivkin is no more. and ziva is mad.

his conversation with vance “you wanted to protect her.” “if she needed it.”

“you jeopardized your entire career for what?” “for you”

her dad calling say tony is just jealous. “even if that was true that doesn’t mean he was wrong.” which is meta. tony is jealous. tony wasn’t wrong.

personally, i love this little arc. it’s a bit wild. ziva evades. accuses tony of being jealous. never gives the full picture. tony is jealous and that does drive a good portion of what happens. he’s just not wrong, at the same time. it brings a lot of tension between them both. ziva saying she was betrayed by tony makes sense where we are currently in the rewatch. did he go about it the right way? no. did he do it out of a fierce loyalty and desire to protect her? yes. is ziva ready to confront that? no.

from a character arc perspective it’s interesting to see ziva so irrational.

Here I am finally talking about SEX EDUCATION 3.

I already wrote in another post that I loved this season so much and that I loved all the characters' journeys.

SPOILER ALERT 'cause I will talk about details.

• Adam became my favourite character, not just in this season but in the entire series. His grownth is simply beautiful, he goes through so many things and he grow and mature becoming a better version of himself, which is the true version of himself: a brave, caring and kind boy who wants to make himself better every single day.

I was sad of Eric breaking up with him (my boy tried so hard to be a good boyfriend for him *sigh*) but I wasn't very angry with this, 'cause I pretty understood the implications behind it.

So yeah. Adam Groff has my heart entirely.

And I also loved the development and the growth of all the Groff family members: loved Maureen's friendship with Jean (cute them) and Michael's journey.

Just beautiful. That's it.

• I love Otis and Maeve and I literally screamed of joy when they FINALLY kissed (the two best kisses of the entire series, in my humble opinion *I am weak for rain kisses sorry*).

But honestly... I am tired of this thing with them being splitted up at the end of every season: they deserve a chance to be together as a couple! Just show their little moments together, we need it!

But talking about this season I loved:

▪︎Otis remembering heart by heart his message's words (this boy has my heart)

▪︎ Otis being proud of Maeve for being accepted at America's School (husband material)

▪︎Otis speech to his mum about Maeve, something like "I don't know a lot about love, but I am sure that she is my person". Love love love.

I am still rooting for them, so I really hope season 4 could be their final endgame. We should just wait and see what will happen.

• RUBY MATTHEWS ON THE WAY. In love with her growth and the fact that we discovered that she is a caring person, with a secret passion for nerdy and soft boys (girl, you're not the only).

I truly loved her moments with Otis: they're so cute as a couple and they have a beautiful chemistry.

The moment when she said "I love you" to Otis and he doesn't say it back is heartbreaking... like, really.

But again it is not Otis' fault and neither Ruby's. They simply were completely honest about their feelings for each other, and I think it's important that this show portrayed it, because it could happen in real life: having feelings for someone who doesn't feel the same way about you, and it's none's fault if this happen.

As Otis said in season 1, in the end "Love is just dumb luck... sometimes you meet someone who feels the same way about you, and sometimes you're unlucky".

But... I think that maybe in season 4 we could have something between Otis and Ruby. And even though I'm rooting for him and Maeve, I won't feel bad if they made up and were again a couple.

In conclusion: Otis and Ruby are cute and powerful (he offering to help her with her dad and she's embarassed because she talks a lot about him with her family, sooo cute).

• Aimee Gibbs, ladies and gentleman. Give a medal to writers for showing us how healing for a trauma is not easy, especially speaking in the case of Aimee. I was sad when she decided to break up with Steve, but it's truly the best thing she could do for herself: she needs some time to be alone and discover herself a little more.

• Maeve finally having a family and a home: heart eyes. My girl deserves only the best things, 'cause she went through so much pain at a very young age. She also needs to get academic success 'cause she's brilliant! Just absolute love for Maeve Wiley.

Her mum apologizing to her and giving her the money to go in America... I cried. That was one of the best moments in the season.

• I also enjoyed very much Isaac's development: him apologizing to Maeve for deleting Otis' message was very mature of him.

• Ola and Lily, my babies. Their journeys are stunning.

I loved the development of Ola's relationship with Jean and I cried of happines when Jakob tells her "You remember me the joy". Again, LOVE.

• Jean and Jakob = heart eyes. They love each other so much, even if they're quite different. But it doesn't matter at all because they both want one thing: being a family.

BUT... dear writers, the final cliffhanger in which baby Joy could not be Jakob's daughter... seriously, what the hell is wrong with you?!?

Just wait for season 4 to see what will happen, 'cause this made me a bit angry.

• Jackson Marchetti, my boy, finally being free to do whatever he wants.

Loved so much his dynamic with Viv, and with Cal too. It was interesting watching him exploring feelings for a queer person.

In the end I loved his dynamic with his mom: they went through so many difficult moments in season 2, they needed some happy moments!

• Cal Bowman, a character we needed even if we didn't know. Just love.

• Hope Haddon... I just want to say that she gave me Dolores Umbridge vibes. And that's all.

• Eric Effiong and Otis Milburn literally invented friendship, same thing for Maeve Wiley and Aimee Gibbs. I wish I had friendships like these. Love love love.

In conclusion, these are my thoughts on SEX EDUCATION 3. I am so happy it was renewed for a new season, 'cause this show is definetely one of the best ever made.

I don’t even really know how to summarize all of this.  I don’t understand the thought that will-they-won’t-they is somehow more exciting and fulfilling than consummation of slowburn.  Shows keep doing it over and over again, and sometimes they get it right at the last minute (see: josh and Donna, tww) but most of the time they get it wrong.  Like at least with something like Olivia and Elliot (svu) there was a reason that they couldn’t be together - he was married (though I think they could have and should have handled Chris leaving better than him just vanishing).

Bones kind of fumbled through it all - I don’t think that they would have put b/b together if Em hadn’t gotten pregnant.  Maybe eventually, but I think they had and would have made the same mistakes the ncis writers did.

Clearly that could have been handled better, but like b/b being together was so good?? They were happy, there was still drama, but god it wasn’t a poorly written tease (well, actually, let’s not get into the quality of the writing on Bones)

Cote is such a fantastic actor, and as horrible as MW is, he is (was??) a really good match for her (was if only because bull kind of sucks and I’m not sure if it’s shitty writing or him sucking or him not wanting to be there??).  There was so much emotion and intensity in all of their scenes, romantic or not, it’s absolutely astounding.  I really appreciate them for all the effort that they put into tiva, because they were really the heart of it.

How often do you have couples that are written but not acted? Couples with absolutely no on-screen chemistry, and actors who can’t or won’t put the effort in to make it work.  And they had that!  They could have done so much with it.  But the writers failed. Over and over again, they failed to deliver consistent characterization and complex plots beyond the same old.

Tony was so much more than a frat boy.

Ziva was so much more than a weapon and a perpetual victim.

I was trying to find good fanfic while I was watching (I…didn’t find much), but there was one where the author decided that Ziva, who was alive, had only put the message out that tali was Tony’s because she knew it would get his attention, and that tali was just some random guy’s.  And that really pisses me off.  Ziva (the writers) made some really poor choices in regards to Ziva’s impulse control, but that’s too far - Ziva wouldn’t intentionally hurt tony, and that would be the worst thing she could do.

Ugh.  I’m tired.

A Little Too Late Chapter 3

Summary: Years after the death of Ziva, a case comes up where Tony finds out that she’s keeping a secret from him.

He looks down at the envelope in his hand, his name is written in red marker on the front. He knew who did it, who else could it have been? Tali. He doesn't know any other child who could have broken into his apartment, except maybe the kid down the hall. But he doubts the kid is skilled enough to get in here.

Tony looks around the room, noticing the picture he left on his end table had been moved, the one he holds dear to his heart. Pulling out his phone, he calls his senior agent.

“McGee.” His voice was groggy over the phone, probably only had an hours’ sleep before he had called him.

Turning on the spot, back to the envelope on the floor behind his door. “McGee, wake everyone up. My apartment was broken into.”

It took a few seconds before the younger man answers him. “At midnight? Tony, did you just get home?”

“Just get over here McGoo, if we want any sleep tonight, get a McMove-On.”

With a yawn, the agent responds, “On it boss” before hanging up. Tony, knowing it would take them a few minutes before his team got to his apartment, walks out. He only has one destination. The coffee shop.

Sobering up, Tony walks down the hall to his apartment with O’Riley on his tail. The young man was yawning loudly as they made their way to the door. As he opens the door, he hears Sandra and McGee coming off the elevator.

“Was it really her?” She asks.

“We won’t know until we get fingerprint evidence.”

Inside, everything was the same with how he left it, the envelope still on the floor, and little fingerprints all over his apartment. The team shuffles in, looking at the clean room around them. McGee is the only one who isn't surprised by the layout of the apartment, on the other hand, O'Riley looks like he's about to piss himself. Tony expects that he's worried about breaking something in his boss' place.

“Let’s make this quick so we can all get back to our beds.” He says before taking a sip of his second coffee of the night.

"If we even make it there," O'Riley mutters under his breath.

Tony doesn’t have the energy to glare at the young probie, but he knew he was right. But he didn’t want to keep the agents up all night, there was no time sensitivity on the case, and they all work better after a rest.

He hopes Josh isn’t right.

McGee is the first one to get into action, grabbing his camera and taking pictures, along with O’Riley, beside them Sandra pulls out the equipment to dust for prints. Tony took this time to search the apartment, trying to find any hints that his daughter, god, his daughter, left anything else behind or stole anything from him.

It didn’t take long for Johnson to call him back to the living room; McGee and O’Riley using their own dusters in the same room. “Boss, so far we’ve only found one set of prints, a child’s prints.”

“What’s the chance it’s Tali’s?”

"How could a child, a 10-year-old no less, unlock the front door of a secured apartment building?" Sandra looks him in the eye, mixed emotions in her gaze, but he could pick out the sadness in them. What could she possibly be sad about? It was his life, his family he lost, not hers. It was his family that was killed before he had the chance to make Ziva his legal family. The woman pushing him away before he could propose.

But no. He lost his family, kidnapped before he could meet his daughter. These people, the ones who kidnapped Tali, just who are they? Why are they teaching her how to break into homes? Why? Why everything?

Tony turns to head to the kitchen with his own duster when McGee calls him over. “Tony,” The Senior Field Agent starts, holding the gray picture frame in his hand. “It looks like she spent most of her stay with this in her hand.” Tony lifts they frame from his agent’s hands, noting the dusted prints all over the edge. “If she really is your daughter, I’m not surprised she spent her stay with this picture.”

Gazing down at the woman in the frame, Tony smiles. It was taken so long ago, he hardly even recognized himself, a lot less gray hair back then. He remembers that day, Thanksgiving of 2012, McGee took the picture of him and Ziva, Ziva wrapped around his shoulders, her cheek pressed against his own, smiling. Happier times. He’d gotten a picture frame the same day he got the photo.

“I hope that she got good emotions from that photo as I do every time I look at it.”

Two hours pass before they are done collecting evidence from the crime scene; take it back to the evidence lock-up. Tony sends his team home to bed to get a couple of hours of sleep before their day starts again.

In the meantime, Tony checks into a hotel. There was only one thing left to do.

Call his father.

He takes a couple of deep breaths to get his mind in order before he pulls out his phone and dials the number. It rings five times before Senior finally picks up.

“Junior! What can I do for you at this time of night?” As frail as the man is getting, Senior still surprise him.

Tony paces in his spot, too wired to sit. “What are you doing awake?”

He could hear the smile and the fancy-dressed tux from over the phone. "I was just in a business meeting. If you want to make some money, you gotta be up and attem before your business partners do, that what I say."

He signed and paces some more. “Dad, ther- there is something I need to tell you.” Pausing, he wills himself to say more, but nothing comes. After a minute of silence, Senior speaks up.

“Yes, Junior? What is it?”

Finally, Tony sits on the edge of the hotel bed. “Ziva has a daughter.” He didn’t have to say it.

“I knew there was something there, Junior.”

“Now is not the time Dad.” He brought his hand up to his face, rubbing his eyes.

“Just answer me one question: Why did you walk away?” His heart lurched.

He looks away, knowing that his father couldn’t see him. “It’s what she wanted.” And he’s regretted it every day since.

“Bullshit.” Shutting his eyes, he inhaled. “Women don’t know what they want. No wonder you never got married.”

“Dad, please.”

"No, listen to what I have to tell you." His father's voice all but boomed in his commanding voice. "When your mother was upset with what I'd done, I would never just leave her alone. I would go out and grab her some of her favorite things. I made sure our marriage worked; she would rather have me there with her, showing her that I loved her. Not getting on a plane and doing business in another country. She would still be here if you did not make that mistake Junior."

He was right, but that didn't stop Tony from snapping. "Do you have any idea how much I regret walking away? No matter what you tell me, it will not change the fact that my soul mate is dead." Tony says with a sigh. "But Tali…" He trails off, unable to come to terms with what had happened. "One crime scene, she leaves a single, deliberate fingerprint. And then in the next, she leaves them all over my apartment. I feel like she's gloating."

“That sounds like you.” Senior smirks over the phone.

“Dad, I’m too tired for this shit tonight.”

"You're the one who called at 4 am."

Flopping back on the bed, Tony sighs again. “I… I had to tell you. You had to hear it from me before she even thought of telling you. If she’s anything like Ziva, she already knows about you, and I’d rather have you hear it from me first.”

Senior stays silent for a moment before he says one last thing before hanging up. “I had a feeling you know? But I pushed it away when you said she was killed.”

When the sun shines through the hotel window, Tony groans and buries his face in the pillow. He’s not ready for the day to start; he hardly slept as it was as his mind kept going over the case in his head. He could always stay in his bed until his alarm went off. Maybe even close his eyes until then. Slowly, he closes his eyes.

What must've felt like seconds, his alarm went off on the bedside table. All but growling, he gets ready for the day.

An hour later, he walks into the bullpen to find Sandra and O'Riley hard at work. "Where's McGee?" He asks setting two coffees down on his desk, each filled with sugar.

"Right here, boss. I was checking in with Abby, updating her on the evidence we found last night." Glancing over at Tony's desk, he comments. "Didn't sleep, Tony?" Without answering verbally, the man glares at him, the bags under his eyes prominent on his face. "Did you hook up with a girl while you were in that hotel room?"

Gritting his teeth, Tony slaps the back of his senior field agent’s head. A good old fashion Gibbs Slap. “No! I was not with a woman Mc-Gee!” The younger man throws his hands up, holding them in front of him in defense.

“Whoa whoa, sorry. You look like a train wreck.”

"Well, wouldn't you if you found out about a child who was at two crime scenes?"

Around them, O'Riley and Sandra stay in their desks, not wanting to disturb their boss. He was already upset as it is. "Look, I get it, all right. You weren't expecting this, but you don't need to be taking it out on us."

“I won’t be taking it out on you if you didn’t keep your trap shut McNosey.” The two glare at each other, not taking their eyes away for a moment when Tony’s phone rings. “DiNozzo.”

“I got something.”

Without a blink, he replies. “Be right there, Abs.” Stepping away from McGee, he speaks to Sandra. “Find me a suspect. Today.”

The music is blaring in the lab, and he's not sure if it's just him getting old or if it is from the lack of sleep, but for once, it was giving him a headache. "Abby!" The woman kept staring. "Abs! Abs!" Wide-eyed, the Goth turns around. "The music! Turn it down!"

Abby says a silent ‘oh’ before she picks up the remote and turns down the techno music.

“How are you not deaf yet?” She shrugs, a smile plastered on her face. He strolls up to her, still wearing the same outfit as she always had. Life has been good for her. Her and her short skirts. “What’d got Abs?”

“Conformation.” Turning back to her computer screen, the women types quickly, pulling up the fingerprints that they had gathered in the middle of the night. “Your suspicions were correct. Tali David broke into your apartment last night.”

“And you couldn’t just tell me that with a phone call? I went all out and everything!” He says, holding up the Caf-Pow in his hand.

She reaches for it, pulling it close to her. “Aww, you shouldn’t have.” Taking some sips before slamming the cup down. “Now. You, sir, need to talk to someone about this.”

Rubbing his eyes, Tony lets out a sign. “I already have Abby.”

Crossing her arms, she leans on one foot. “Why don’t I believe you?”

"I swear it! I talked to my Dad and Gibbs last night. I had to tell them before she does." All these emotions he was letting out was tough on him, he couldn't keep doing this. And yet, he does. "I don't know how much Tali knows. I don't know if she knows about Gibbs and McGee, even you and me. I have to protect you."

Abby frowns. “Aww, Tony,” She wraps her arms around the man, her warm body pressed against his chest. “I love you too, but Tali is just a child, she’s not going to hurt us.”

The corner of his mouth lifts a touch, he was about to respond when his phone rings. “DiNozzo. Yeah? Yeah. Well, go get him!” Abby looks at him expectantly. “The team has a lead.”

“David David, 27 years old, Navy brat but never continued the family tradition of joining the core. The type of gun Abby matched to the murder weapon is the same make and model as to what David has registered to him.” Sandra tells him from observation, looking into the interrogation room where David and McGee sit talking.

On the other side of the glass, David shifts in his seat. McGee clears his throat, placing the folder down in front of him, he gets started. “Do you know why we called you here today, David?”

The man’s eyes shift from the mirror behind the agent to his eye. “They said Stephen is dead, and they wanted to talk to me about it.”

Opening the file, McGee pulls out a photo of the two men, Stephen and David. “Our sources tell us you and Stephen are close, best friends even.”

“We’re not friends anymore.”

The room goes quiet for a moment before McGee replies, “Why do you say that?”

David lurches forward, his hands slamming against the table. “Because! He’s sleeping with my little sister!” He snarls at him. “He betrayed my trust! I can never forgive him for that!”

“Well,” McGee looks down at the picture of Stephen and a young woman. “He’s no longer sleeping with your sister.”

David looks away, his face stoned. Quietly, he says, “And how would you know that?”

“Because he’s dead.” The hard face the man was holding was gone, the next sentence made the man’s jaw drop. “And we believe you did it.”

Not my first rodeo but god I’m so tired lemme share

CAMPAIGN 1: group consists of high school friends and siblings

* helped set up characters. Erevan already set on being a wizard and excited to create his own spells down the line. Erevan was reading Marin all the choices for class she could be and immediately settled on bard. When erevan wanted to convince her to pick another class she kept chanting BARD BARD BARD while erevan sped through the other options quickly.

* She’s playing as a bard (oh boy)

* Marin recently set up a tumblr for the campaign (see Bree-n-d)

* My brother literally modeled his character after Gibbs from NCIS

* Taki Khan is a big ass fighter

* Campaign is loosely based off of my hero academia because I want these weeb asses to have a good first campaign (they’re first time players)

* Marin finds a fire dragon egg

* Me: do you really want to keep that egg? Marin: yes me: you live in the woods

* Her cousin erevan from the fire dragon clan comes to help her fight treants and takes care of egg

* They bring the egg to her town. The town catches on fire because they tried to keep the egg warm and left it unattended

* Marin helps save the townspeople

* The king of the world shows up. He’s known for protecting the world from monsters and demons and wards them away with his skill and sword

* His names Tutto Potrebbe (literally translates to all night)

* He wants Marin to be his successor

* He gives her his sword which levels up as Marin does (levels 1-2 : 2d6, 3: 3d6, 4 4d6 etc)

* They go to Isamu guild to train. King of the world is a teacher

* On the way they meet Gibbs and taki khan

* They secure the dragon egg at the guild

* Side note: everyone’s trying to eat this fucking egg

* Guild sends them on a mission to gain four more students

* Guild has a hot teacher who’s in a relationship with Vlad, but she seeks to fuck

* Taki khan keeps hitting on her to no avail

* The rest ask the stable for horses

* They run into a handsome prince on the way to the nearest earth mountain clan (sister clan to erevan)

I've been feeling like I need to start me things again. Having a baby was a shock to the system, I was so well established before, driven and really focussed on my passions and hobbies. I could take a wander down the high street, visit second hand book stored and melt into a cup of hot comforting soya mocha. I could rummage through sale baskets and visit little gift boutiques and antique stores and pick up beautiful little ornaments to admire from my home study desk. I could go on long forest adventures with dog in tow (more like me in tow as Gibbs is always miles ahead). Even when my beautiful girl was only a baby, I could still enjoy these pleasures while she slept peacefully in the baby carrier. Since my baby rapidly leveled up to a toddler, I find I can't enjoy little pleasures at all. She's literally a bull in the China shop, so most of my free days involve something bomb proof like a picnic on the beach or a play in the park. These are still beautiful things and I do enjoy my time with my daughter but I miss the mindlessness. Not having to be on alert, constantly watching, diffusing, entertainment, comforting, feeding, changing. I miss a conversation with a stranger, a real one where I'm not running away. You may be wondering, where is dad? Well, dad is always there. He is wonderful and he dotes over our girl, he has all the time in the world for her but she wants her mamma. I work 4 days a week, my husband full time. Evenings he works mostly but on the odd occasion I am gifted with am hour bath time to myself. I guess I could make more use of my evening time but that's always been a supper bath relax period for me. When the Friday comes, I'm so excited I usually plan 2 playdates one for morning and another after nap time in the afternoon. Weekends are tricky, it usually is divided into one day family time so we can all enjoy time together and the other day for either Greg and I if we have a sitter or for Greg to climb and then baby and I have another day to us. Perhaps it's time to start demanding that every other Sunday is me time. A whole Sunday to me. It's hard, I want to be with my family but I also ache to be with... Me! How to find the balance... My mind is ready now but I'm not taking action and I can feel it. My mood is low, energy low, patience extremely low! My batteries are not even flat, they're completely empty. I feel heavy. This could also be due to change on diet, I've gone back to low carbs, no sugar or oil, high fruit and veg. Its takes a few weeks so adjust but I'm talking on a soul level. I feel itchy and my motivated. We have a beautiful holiday planned this weekend in Blairgowrie. It's cram packed with fine dining and adventure parks and drives. I remember now that when he suggested it, I jumped up and said "can I go stand up paddle boarding!?" Ofcourse he said yes. He's so supportive. Something for me, he loves it when I do that. I was sad we couldn't do it together but that's more my fear of being alone talking more than actually wanting the company. I'd love to do it alone, so I kept quiet and he booked it. He's off to the adventure park while I do a cool thing for me. I wanted to go to the adventure park too, I feel like I'll miss out on an experience with her. I think I need me more right at this moment. I do wonder how some mums, the super strong ones, manage to happily push their needs aside and serve their children full time until they're really really old adults. They have all this energy to cool and clean and be organised. I'm always late, messy, sleeping in, all over the show... I keep reminding myself that I'm doing my best and I am. I will get there again! How has having a baby made me so damn tired all the time? It's not post natal depression it's just an all round flatness. I want to do park runs on a Saturday, I want to book myself in for a spa day. I want to... Travel? A solo adventure for a week! Slowly, baby steps. My baby is still so little and she needs her mamma, she will always come first but I think a little thing here and there for me would be great 😊

A Cancer Lie, Football And Some Missing Stationary...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (12th-16th March 2018)

Oh, Sienna. You’ve been in Hollyoaks for nearly 6 years now, but nothing you do surprises me anymore. In fact, you’re the textbook example of a tired character going round and round in circles. This week saw Sienna attend a press conference to help find baby Sophie. Unfortunately for Sienna, last week’s lies about Warren attempting to snatch Sebastian came back to bite her on the bum when Cleo worked out she’d been lying and went straight to DS Thorpe. However, with DS Thorpe being more concerned with hunting down the callous thief who’d nicked his stapler, Cleo was forced to take matters into her own hands and so confronted Sienna at the press conference. Realising she’d been rumbled, Sienna ran off and was forced to explain herself to a furious Joel, who insisted he wanted nothing more to do with her and announced he was moving out. It looked like Sienna was about to face a very lonely existence until she returned home to find a mystery man in her flat and later received a message instructing her to go to a nearby industrial estate after dark if she wanted to get Sophie back. But, just like the boy who cried wolf, nobody would believe Sienna’s claims...

There was one person willing to fight Sienna’s corner, though. Maxine, who’d seen the messages and was able to convince Joel that Sienna was in danger as she headed off to meet the mystery man. Sienna arrived at the industrial estate and was about to get into a car, when she was interrupted by Joel and Maxine. As the car sped off, Sienna was knocked over and rushed to hospital, where the doctors soon found something very worrying on one of her scans. With Sienna fearing that her cancer was back, Joel decided to move back in and vowed to support her. The following day, Sienna was given the news that she was still cancer free, but Joel took her tears of joy the wrong way and she didn’t correct him when he assumed her cancer was back. Joel soon began asking questions about appointments and so Sienna told him that she couldn’t be seen for another two weeks, giving her some time to think about what to do next. Joel was furious that the hospital would have Sienna wait so long and confronted Misbah, who promised to look into it. Of course, Misbah soon found out that there was no cancer and went round to ask Sienna what the hell she was playing at. Sienna promised Misbah that she would tell Joel the truth. At some point. Maybe. In 10 years or so. 

Meanwhile, over at the Morgan-Richardson’s new home, the mystery stationary thief struck again as Ella hunted high and low for her calculator. That wasn’t the only drama for the youngster this week as she struggled to cope with no longer being an only child. As Ollie prepared for his trial at Buster’s football academy, Luke turned into the ultimate pushy parent and Mandy could see how left out Ella was starting to feel as Luke rebuffed her offers of help. Mandy pointed out how much of a prat Luke was being and so he dug out his Dad’s old football table, which soon brought the family back together. 

As the day of Ollie’s trial arrived, Luke became insufferable and the amount of pressure he was putting on his son caused him to run from the pitch. Ollie was embarrassed by how the trial had gone and taunts from Imran certainly didn’t help. Encouraged by Sami, Imran went round to apologise but overheard Mandy and Luke discussing his rape and ran off. The following day, Ollie demanded to know why Imran was being off with him and Imran told Ollie what he had overheard. Ollie sat on the information for a while, not sure how to tackle the subject with Luke. Eventually, Ollie asked Luke outright if he’d been raped but Luke insisted that it hadn’t happened and that it should never be spoken of again....

Elsewhere, Darren and Nancy returned from their holiday but whilst they’d had a good time seeing the sights of Venice, Nancy confided in Mandy that Darren had barely touched her whilst they were away. At Mandy’s suggestion, Nancy donned some sexy underwear under her coat and headed off to meet with Darren, who had other ideas and dragged her along to support Ollie in his trial. Unfortunately, the breezy conditions at the side of the pitch proved problematic for Nancy and she was left red faced when her coat blew open. Darren soon realised what Nancy had been trying to do and the pair headed to the bedroom, but Nancy’s hopes of passion were dashed with she mentioned Mandy and Darren ran off. Having been separated for the last week or so, Darren and Mandy wasted no time in jumping into bed together but they were almost caught when Luke returned home early. Darren was forced to hide under the bed and listen as Luke told Mandy that he’d arranged for them to get married properly in Florida in two days time. Mandy accepted Luke’s proposal and, thanks to Luke being a very light sleeper, Darren was forced to spend the night under the bed! 

In other news this week, Marnie went out to dinner with Buster and, conscious she had to be back at The Dog by 7, tried to hurry the date along. Unfortunately, Buster was having none of it and Marnie ended up missing her curfew and being arrested thanks to his insistence at ordering practically everything on the menu. Luckily, Buster didn’t seem to be deterred! Kyle encouraged James to get his job back and was then invited him to move in with him. Finally, the Osborne’s were shocked when Darcy and Jack announced their romance! Hollyoaks have had some weird couples over the years, but this one takes the biscuit, even if she is likely only trying to scam him!  

5 Things We Learnt This Week:

1. DS Thorpe is more concerned with finding his missing stapler than finding a missing baby. Maybe that explains why the crime rate in this village is so high?

2. James has Egyptian cotton sheets in his guest bedroom. 

3. Marnie will only eat chips that have been triple cooked and drizzled in truffle oil. Snob. 

4. If you buy a karaoke machine from Dirk, your party will certainly go with a bang. Unfortunately the bang will come curtesy of a blown fuse. 

5. Mandy’s knowledge of football is severely lacking. You don’t ‘throw in corners’ and David Beckham is not the only player.

Observations about one of my go to shows

I have a few shows I tend to watch regularly either just because or as background noise. Friends, Fraiser, HIMYM (before it got tedious) Futurama, and NCIS. I usually don't get into cop shows but I liked all the characters on NCIS and I will stick with a show, or a book series for a long time if I like the characters, even if the plots are so-so or not my usual taste.

Hell, I read the In Death series (mysteries, but heavy on the romance) for years even though I'm not really into romance because I liked the way the characters were written.

I will usually drop a series if enough original characters either leave or are killed off, things get so boring that even good characters can't save it, or enough people start acting suddenly OOC. With the In Death books it was a combo of the second and the third reasons. The main characters were starting to be parodies of what they were in earlier books, and the plots became so formulaic that you could tell what kind of story you were going to get by the end of the first page.

If the book started with the main character Det. Eve Dallas at a crime scene then you were going to get a mystery story focused on getting the bad guy. On the side there would be stuff involving her husband and friends. If the book opened with Eve and her husband Rourke together in social or domestic situation, you would still get a mystery but the main focus of the book would be a melodramatic fight between husband and wife that would leave Eve distracted and fighting to stay on task and catch the bad guy. Considering that when I stopped reading there were 29 books and short stories in the series, Eve and Rourke had only been married for two years and this pattern started somewhere around book 15, the number of huge relationship rattling fights these two had should have sent them into counseling. I gave up.

NCIS is another one I am giving up on partly because most of the original characters, or long term characters have left the show and because of a surprising reason that isn't in my normal list. I'm kinda tired of them killing off women just because the actresses want to leave the show... I mean the creators have never come out and said it, but it is true! If an actor is a chick they better stay for the duration, or not be a side character because you are not allowed to own a vagina and leave that show alive! And what is weird about this is that I have not seen anything online talking about it. I mean, this is the internet, everyone talks about everything but no one has noticed this?

I'm going to list all of the female characters they have killed off as of season 13 (I think that's where I stopped) If you are currently watching the show, and are not to season 13, spoilers. And if you don't watch the show, this list will mean nothing to you, sorry!

Let's start at the start.

1. Special Agent Caitlin Todd -Shot in the head by a double agent.

The actress had decided to leave at the end of the second season

2. Special Agent Paula Cassidy - Blown up by a suicide bomber

I think they just killed this character for plot reasons, she only showed up once a season.

3. Director Jenny Shepard - Shoot out with Russian spies, but was also dying of some degenerative disease.

The actress wanted to pursue other roles

4. Special Agent Michelle Lee - Shot while Gibbs was trying to stop a kidnapper/murder.

Again, I think this was just for plot reasons. Lee was working with the bad guy because he had kidnapped her little sister.

5. Special Agent Lara Macy - Killed by a drug cartel trying to throw Gibbs off balance.

This one is a cheat since she was a cross over character but like, Paula Cassidy, I am counting her because she was important to a member of the main team (Gibbs) Paula was important to Tony.

6. Jackie Vance (Director Vance's. Wife) - Killed when a hit was carried out on Eli David who was at the director's house.

I think the actress was pregnant. Leading up to her last episode she was always holding something in front of her stomach.

7. Diane Sterling (Gibbs and Fornell' s ex-wife) - Shot by the brother of the guy who killed Kate

Don't know why they killed her off, plot wise, it could have been any woman that had been important to Gibbs.

8. Special Agent Ziva David - Killed by a bomb that was launched at her house in Isreal.

The actress left at the end of the season before they killed the character off to move closer to her family. When she left the the show's producers said that they weren't going to kill Ziva because trey wanted her to come back for guest spots. Apparently, the actress said that she didn't like their plans for Ziva, that they were going to turn her into a bitter woman and until they gave Ziva a story that would be keeping with the character she wouldn't come back. So, naturally they kill off the trained assassin by tossing a bomb on her house and killing her in her sleep.

9 & 10 - Shannon and Kelly Gibbs - Killed by a drug cartel.

Yeah, this one happened before the show started but starting in the 3rd season these two characters are so woven into the story that it would be weird not to include them.

10 main, reoccuring, or influential female characters all killed off. As opposed to 6 guys who were killed off (I'm not counting Ducky's mom or Gibbs's dad because the actors who played them passed away and I'm not counting bad guys. Lee was an exception because she wasn't bad so much as desperate).

And now the actress that plays Abby is going to leave and the show is saying that they have a special farewell in store for her. GIANT MASSIVE MOVIE-RUINING SPOILERS AHEAD FOR DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES.

I've only seen the movie once, but I wanted to put a night of sleep between me and it before I tried to convey my thoughts on it. I see my job as a fan here to tell you generally what happens and my thoughts on it, as well as whether you should spend your time going to see it. All only opinions of course. (I'll refer to the movies in numerals - 1 for the first, 5 for this, and then of course the in-betweens. Mainly because I don't want to try to remember the abbreviations OST and DMTNT. Except for where the regulars have ended up and the state of the Black Pearl in movie 5, you really don't need to have seen 4 to understand this one. You don't strictly HAVE to have seen the first three movies, either - this movie can stand on its own as an entertaining single viewing. If you've never seen a POTC movie and you come in with this one, you will probably laugh at most of the jokes (if you have that kind of sense of humor) and like some of the characters.

Since I doubt anyone who hasn't seen at least the first movie is going to read through this, I'll assume you all are familiar with the original characters from 1-3 as I go forth.

THE SPOILERS The movie opens with young Henry Turner tying rocks to his foot to drown himself in the bay just off the land where he lives; he's anywhere from 11-14 years old. His father is Death's Ferryman of the ocean, you see, so the fastest way to raise Will Turner is to get himself killed or nearly killed. He lands on the deck of the Dutchman, it surfaces, and Will emerges to talk with his son. Henry tells him he may have found a way to break the curse that ties Will to the ship, but he needs to find Jack Sparrow to help. Will commands him to not go anywhere near Jack and to go back home and leave him to his fate. Will is barnacled in Davy Jones-lite fashion; just enough to see the sea is winning against his resolve not to succumb to the hopelessness of the job. Unlike Davy Jones, he is not bitter or angry, but resigned and almost tired. We also get a hint that he is not exactly in command of his crew anymore, by how quickly he ushers Henry away and sinks the Dutchman to put distance between them and the boy. (This may also explain why you don't see Will again until the end of the movie, despite all the water-based shenanigans and near-death experiences throughout ... like he's not really in charge of the Dutchman anymore.)

Nine years later, Henry, now anywhere from 20-23 ish, is a low-ranking sailor on a Navy ship. We find out he's searching for Jack and the Pearl. He sees the ship is headed for the cursed Devil's Triangle and tries to warn the captain, telling the man he's read all the lore of the sea and this place is Bad News. The captain not only scolds and mocks him, but strips him of his lowly rank as a traitor and jails him. Of course the ship goes in; of course the cursed Captain Salazar and his undead crew overrun the ship and kill everyone on board - save Henry, whom Salazar tells to relay a message to Jack when he finds him. (We'll find out later Salazar used to be a pirate-hunter and perished in a fire in the Devil's Triangle while chasing newly-captained Jack Sparrow, while Jack escaped. So, he's hunting Jack. Trouble is, he can't leave the Triangle unless something happens - which it will, later.)

Through a series of events, Henry ends up at the same Caribbean English outpost as Jack and a young woman roughly Henry's age, Caryna Smith (Smyth?). Caryna keeps landing in Navy custody and escaping it - she's a scientist, and female in the 18th century, which is enough to get her convicted as a witch. Caryna is an orphan who is amazingly well-educated for having no resources other than a mysterious diary left to her by her father, a man of science who was searching for the Trident of Poseiden - which can break any curse laid at sea. The island shenanigans are pretty entertaining; suffice to say they all end up stealing the same ship with Gibbs, Marty, and the rest of Jack's paltry, pissed-off (at Jack) crew. Also, Jack trades his magic compass away for a bottle of rum (more on this later) and, in willingly giving it up, breaks Salazar's imprisonment miles away, allowing him to sail out on the open waters in his ship-eating ship (you read that right).

More shenanigans happen, McGuffins are pursued (chiefly the Trident, which everybody wants for different reasons), innuendos are made, young romance is set up (of course), we run into Barbossa and his crew, which includes Murtogg and Mullroy (but no Pintel and Ragetti!), Salazar's in the mix, and we find out his crew can't set foot on land any more than the Dutchman's crew or captain (they vanish in a puff of black smoke if they get out of the water). Shenanigans, shenanigans, it turns out Caryna is totally NOT the daughter of Jack Sparrow as most of us suspected (mainly because making Jack and Will co-parents-in-law would have been too delicious) - but the reality is possibly more entertaining, since it turns out Barbossa is her father.

(I really did want the after-credits scene to be Will and Elizabeth finding out their daughter-in-law-probably-to-be is a Barbossa, then the camera pans back to a general shot of the island, a la "Home Alone 2" while in the far distance you can still hear the two of them screaming "NOOOOOOOOOO!" with birds flying off in every direction.)

So - they find the Trident, break the curse on Salazar's ship (and we'll find out later, on Will Turner, too, elsewhere in the ocean) turning them all back human, and the good guys manage to escape back to the Pearl while Salazar falls to his death. Well ... not actually. Caryna briefly finds out that Barbossa is her father, after which he sacrifices himself to drown with Salazar to ensure her ability to escape his clutches unharmed. Once they're all safe, Caryna decides to change her last name to Barbossa from Smith. Cut to the cliffs outside Henry's childhood home, where he and Caryna are engaging in their form of verbal foreplay and smooching, when the Dutchman shows up in the distance, uncursed and gleaming brown and beige sails. Will climbs the hill to hug his son, confused as to how he's come to be uncursed and human again ... but just as Henry's going to take old man to the pub for a grog and a tale, Elizabeth appears in the distance hiking her skirts. She and Will run to each other and embrace, then kiss, while Henry and Caryna look on from a distance ... and from an even further distance on the Pearl, Jack watches through his spyglass, revolted by the whole picture of domesticity porn. And then he and his crew sail off.

The after-credits scene is Will and Elizabeth sleeping in their seaside bedroom - they are both dressed in clean white linen sleep-gowns, and they've had baths, and all I could think was This is the cleanest I've ever seen these two. Something menacing is coming up the steps and creaking open their door and looming toward the bed, and we catch a glimpse of some barnacled sea creature reaching for them when Will jerks awake from his bad dream. He looks around, turns over, hugs Elizabeth, and goes back to sleep ... and the camera pans down to the floor to close on a puddle of water and corals snapped off in it.

WHAT I WAS 'MEH' ABOUT OR DISLIKED: For me, it's easier to start with what I don't care for about a movie, if I'm ambivalent. And I sure was about 5.

Plot holes - SO many. I won't list them all, but there is not adequate explanation for many things. Of course, 1-3 also had fantastical elements, but they were explained and largely made sense in-universe. People do things that don't always make sense; magical objects aren't always explained. There's a lot of suspending of disbelief you have to do for this one.

Characterization - The nuance of the first three movies is lacking in a lot of characters here. Everyone who's Navy is efficient, duty-driven, and arrogant or head-down-following-orders. There's no Norrington-type in this movie (BTW, Norrington is not mentioned - which I think will actually make a lot of his fans happy, especially after movies 2 and 3). Nobody in authority seems to be a benevolent person - they're not all Trump, but neither are there any Bernies. The pirates are kind of dumb, more than they need to be. Which brings us to ...

Jack Sparrow - Oh, man. I gotta limit myself on this one. I don't know if Depp had much input into Jack's characterization in this one, but if he did, it honestly looks like his IRL troubles were leaking in to the point of almost drowning the character. In movies 1-3 Jack is a buffoon only insofar as it serves his purpose to make people think he's not as smart as he really is, so he can sneak under the radar with his cleverness and charm a lot of people he needs to do things for him. Conversely, if you only saw this movie and not the earlier ones, you would think Jack is a fall-down dissolute drunk and whoremonger who isn't very bright and whose fortunes come almost entirely on luck and other people's allowances for him. There are only a handful of flashes of the old brilliance and character, and I really miss That Guy. Whereas young Will Turner was trying to second-guess what Jack was really up to in 1, young Henry Turner seems most of the time like he's Jack's guardian trying to keep him propped upright and marching forward like you would that uncle you always heard used to be ripping brilliant but now is "ehhhh."

The lack of callbacks - I wanted more callbacks in this movie. I wanted Henry to talk more about his mom and dad and stories he'd grown up hearing, and what his mom was doing, and some line from Barbossa or Gibbs about something they remembered of his parents, bad or good. There are a couple of little moments, but it's not enough. Which brings me to ...

The retconning - I won't wade too deep into this, except to say it's very clear these are different screenwriters than worked on the first three movies. I won't say Jack's entire backstory is retconned, but you have to be a somewhat skillful fanfic writer to take what they give us and work it in with what we've learned in movies 2 and 3, particularly. Also, I'm not wild about what they did to Will Turner's personality as captain of the Dutchman, but we can discuss that later - at least it *might* have a basis in logical explanation.

Green-screening - I shouldn't say this was "bad" so much as there were moments it was too obvious some actor was hanging from something or standing on something to look like they were hanging on something, and the camera was too close and it just looked a little fake-y. Still, I understand FX isn't an easy thing (and where were a lot of FX shots that were really good in this one, so maybe this isn't a "MEH" so much as "A FEW SHOTS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN EXECUTED BETTER").

Too little Will and Elizabeth - There should have been more of both in the movie. If you're going to pay your actors as much as they likely got (as much as I HOPE they were paid to be in it), use them. I'm just saying. I wanted some more of them.

THINGS I LIKED: Henry and Caryna - As separate characters, that is. I have nothing against their romance; they're cute, and their style of banter is something I could see them keeping up into old age. But I prefer a character to stand on their own, and they're all right. The actor who plays Henry is not quite the treasure young Tom "Spider-Man" Holland is turning out to be, but he's got talent and he does a pretty good job of getting across an amalgamation of the personalities of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. My favorite thing about Henry is that he seems to be only an OK swordsman; he's not his father - but what he lacks there he makes up for in what seems to be a preternatural affinity for hand-to-hand combat. He hits, he kicks, he kneels to trip people over him, he even grabs a couple and bodyslams them like The Undertaker. (I am sincerely hoping Elizabeth taught him these moves.) And Caryna - she's not like Elizabeth. She doesn't fight or confront the same way, but she's direct and unafraid, and good at getting herself out of jail and other tight spots. Plus, she's book-smart and scientifically literate. I swear to Christ if their kid inherit both their traits, they're going to be either Sherlock Holmes or Lara Croft.

Will Turner - Shut up. Of course I like him. I'm not entirely wild what the writers did with him or the fact he's in this so little, but I enjoy the fact he's middle-aged and looks like it with facial lines and sadness in his eyes at the right time (and some humor), and it was nice to see him and Elizabeth happy again. Of course, I can still pair him just as easily with Jack in fanfic, which brings us to ...

Jack/Will potential - Yes, it's still there. If you're an industrious fanfic writer or reader, you can make it happen. They're both older and a little more defeated, and Will definitely wouldn't be putting up with any of Jack's bullshit at this point, but you can slash them. What I really liked is how Jack didn't really show any favoritism or fondness for Henry 94 percent of the time, but there were 3-4 instances he did something to save the kid, because why not. He does ask after Elizabeth at one point and if she said his name in her sleep (LOL), and Henry is "no ... no." (I saw someone online comment that this is patently untrue, since how else would Henry know about Jack in the first place, and that the more likely explanation is that Elizabeth probably shit-talked Jack through most of the kid's childhood, sprinkled with some fond allowances for the fact Jack wasn't always a selfish prick or one or both of Henry's parents would be dead, okay?) Granted, I think most of the slash at this point in their lives would be less about Jack and Will having sex everywhere and more about Will overlooking the fact Jack cheats at cards and drawing a sword on anyone who tries to shoot him for it at the pub. But, you know. You can have the nookie too. (And yeah, there's OT3 fic to be had too, probably in Elizabeth being the one every so often who pulls the gun on Jack and Will lets her. Or she bodyslams Jack.)

ANYWAY ... I won't say it's a bad movie and I won't say it's a really good movie. It's entertaining. Had this been the first POTC movie, I don't believe there would be any sequels. There are things I could've done better if they'd hired me to write it, easily; there are things a lot of us in the old fandom could've done better if they'd only hired US instead. But it has enough holes in it that if you like the fanfic thing, you can spend lots of time patching up missing scenes and what-not.

“I feel like I did all I could. I don’t feel I could have done a better job. I didn’t leave anything out there,” Hamlin said. “I was thinking we got a chance and it just didn’t work out. We got a little aggressive there and it cost us.”

“On the restarts I could do what I wanted to do and hold them off for 15 or 20 laps,” Harvick said. “This race has come down to that every year. You kind of play toward that and they were quite a bit better than us on the long run. We had a really good car for those first 15 to 20 laps on the restarts and had a lot of speed, we just never got to try to race for it there.”

The finale pitted a trio of Toyota drivers from Hall of Fame owner Gibbs against Harvick, the hand-picked driver of former Gibbs protege Tony Stewart at Stewart-Haas Racing. Busch, ironically, had one of his worst races in the pits in last year’s finale as his front-tire changer had hiccups on two stops. But he was flawless Sunday night and led a race-high 120 laps.

“Everybody always says you never give up. We’re no different. We just do what we can do each and every week,” Busch said. “Sometimes we may not be the best, sometimes we may not have the right track position. We had a really good car and I could race around and move around. That’s what’s so special about Homestead Miami Speedway, is the ability to put on a show.

“I felt like we did that there racing those guys. I know it kind of dulled out toward the end. It was exciting enough from my seat. It was a lot of fun to cap off such an amazing year.”

Busch gave Gibbs his fifth Cup title and bookended a season in which the Gibbs cars opened the year 1-2-3 at the Daytona 500. Gibbs this entire year has been mourning the death of his son, JGR co-chairman J.D. Gibbs, and the organization promoted a “Do it for J.D.” theme the entire weekend.
